And So Ends “The Year Called January”!
I am asking my annual question: “Why does July fly by, while January has the same number of days, but it feels like we cram a year into it?” For me, it’s also a blur of cake the last week of the month as my sons have birthdays five days apart. I have made two yellow cakes with chocolate frosting!
It has been a busy week as I had two days of meetings in the city. I know, how brilliant was I to schedule these for the coldest and snowiest week of the year? I am not sure who in the city shovels the corners, but the narrow passages leave a lot to be desired. At least the frozen street meant that I was not trudging through slush on Thursday like I did on Tuesday. I am not averse to cold weather, but it has been a while since I found a need to pull out scarves, hats and gloves.
On Tuesday evening, we hosted our 40th “Bookaccino Live” Book Group program --- and it was our most attended event ever! Allen Levi joined us to discuss his New York Times bestselling debut novel, THEO OF GOLDEN. The audience clearly was mesmerized by the insight he gave into the characters and setting.
Allen talked about his inspiration for writing the book and expressed his appreciation for how it has resonated with so many people. He thoughtfully responded to a number of reader questions. Some were asked by attendees who appeared on the virtual stage, while I shared questions and comments from those who were camera-shy or weren’t able to attend. Allen also updated us on the project that he is working on now. And yes, it features Ellen!
Click here to watch the event or here to listen to the podcast. The program clocks in at just under two hours, but be assured that those who read THEO OF GOLDEN will not want to miss a minute of it. This is the kind of book group where we assume that readers have read the book, so we did talk spoilers. We covered so much ground with Allen and heard from a number of people who were blown away by the book --- including a mother and her 14-year-old son!
We’ve had such an overwhelming response to this event, and I’ve loved reading the notes that I’ve received from those who attended. I’m sharing some of them with you here. They are amazing!
Reader Comments about Allen Levi's Event
Maryann wrote, “Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this conversation and community. I never expected to be so enthralled for two hours --- way past my bedtime! Lucky me that I stumbled upon this event. Please include me for any future events. THEO OF GOLDEN was not only a delight, but a Pandora’s box of surprises. No one could miss the kindness, the prudence and the care of Theo’s interactions with everyone he meets. However, beyond the novel, the author was authentic, educated and eloquent with the wisdom of his years, beliefs, experiences and travels.”
Carolyn wrote, ”I watched the YouTube video today, and it was wonderful. I know a lot of work went into this presentation, and it is very much appreciated.”
Debbie wrote, “Just wanted you to know what a great program you hosted last evening! It was amazing that you pulled off the technology to allow the large number of people who wanted to see and hear the interview with Allen Levi. Allen was so gracious not only to answer all the questions but also to listen to the many stories people wanted to tell him. It is obvious that the book resonated at a very personal level with readers.”
Shari wrote, ”This conversation was as beautiful, warm and loving as the book itself. Thank you for hosting it. You were an excellent moderator.”
Marcia wrote, “As a former head of Reader Services with lots of experience hosting authors, I must comment about last night’s interview with Allen Levi. The way that you structured the program by allowing people to join in visually to present their questions and thoughts was exciting and novel. Choosing people from all parts of the country allowed different points of view from diverse voices --- again a new and exciting idea. As you said, the program could’ve gone on for hours, and I bet you would not have lost one viewer. It was so good! Allen Levi could not have been more charming or interesting. What a great interview you ran!”
Julia wrote, “I enjoyed the entire interview so much, and my husband had to hand me a box of tissues because I cried throughout. Allen Levi is such a beautiful soul. Visiting the coffee shop Fountain City Coffee in Columbus, Georgia, has been added to my bucket list, and I hope to meet Allen there one day.”
Lori wrote, “Thank you to you and your team for putting together last night’s conversation with Allen Levi. How great was that?”
Sanders wrote, “I am from 'Golden' (Columbus, GA). I have known Allen since childhood, and I couldn't be more proud and thrilled for my friend. In my mind's eye, I have an uncanny visual of Golden and many of the characters as I have read and reread the book.”
We know a number of readers were joining us for the first time at this event. And we look forward to sharing with them more of what we offer.
We are thrilled to announce that Lily King will be our next “Bookaccino Live” Book Group guest. The event will be held on Thursday, February 26th at 8pm ET, and you can sign up here for it.
We will talk about her most recent novel, HEART THE LOVER, an instant New York Times bestseller and a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection. This deeply moving love story celebrates literature, forgiveness, and the transformative bonds that shape our lives.
I will interview Lily and then will turn to readers who would like to share a question for her on screen (we have special sign-in directions for these attendees, and they will get to chat with Lily in our “backstage green room” before the program starts), followed by audience questions.
If you would like to ask Lily a question, please fill out this form by noon ET on Thursday, February 26th. Be sure to include your name, city, state, email address and phone number, as well as your question. And indicate if you would like to be on camera or off.
My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Paula McLain. Her new novel, SKYLARK, is January's “Good Morning America” Book Club pick.
Paula has been enthralled with Paris since her 2011 bestseller, THE PARIS WIFE. Her new book features dual timelines set in Paris --- one in 1664 and the other in the 1940s during the Nazi occupation. The characters face parallel struggles across different time periods. Both storylines address how people find meaning and hope through connections with others.
In SKYLARK, the underground tunnels beneath Paris serve as a space of refuge and resistance throughout history. Paula conducted extensive research, including physically exploring the city’s underground tunnel network. She wanted to create a “drilled-down view” of Paris rather than the glamorous cafés portrayed in her earlier work.
In addition to talking about how she worked with her editor, Peter Borland, to weave the two stories together, Paula discusses the audiobook narration by Alexa Davalos and Michiel Huisman, both of whom captured the emotional essence of the characters.

George Saunders’ much-talked-about and long-awaited second novel, following 2017’s Booker Prize winner LINCOLN IN THE BARDO, released this week. VIGIL takes place at the bedside of an oil company CEO in the twilight hours of his life as he is ferried from this world into the next. It’s a tale that encompasses life and death, good and evil, and the thorny question of absolution.
Harvey Freedenberg has our review and says, “Whether in real life or literature, most of us will encounter a character like K. J. Boone, armed with firm ideas about whether or not the term ‘villain’ should be attached to him for eternity. And it’s likely that many will leave his story with that assessment unchanged. The fact that Saunders may shake those perceptions a bit along the way is a tribute to the success of this modest but memorable novel.”
Word of Mouth Contest Reminder
VIGIL is one of our current Word of Mouth prizes; the other is IT’S NOT HER by Mary Kubica, which we will review next week. Submit your comments about the books you’ve read, and you’ll be in the running to with both these titles. Please do so by Friday, February 6th at noon ET.
Don Winslow announced his retirement from writing in 2022, but it turns out he has more stories to tell. The newly released THE FINAL SCORE is a collection of six all-new, never-before-published short novels. From a legendary thief planning one last impossible job to a father confronting the brutal consequences of his past, these stories are immersive, morally layered and deeply human.
Ray Palen has this to say in his review: “I have enjoyed everything that Don Winslow has written and consider him to be on equal footing with the three crime writers I recommend to readers the most: Michael Connelly, Dennis Lehane and George Pelecanos. Winslow is at the top of his game here as he looks forward to the upcoming film adaptation of his novella, CRIME 101. At the same time, I know he will be celebrating the reception he gets for THE FINAL SCORE.”
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:
-
PENDERGAST: Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child have penned A. X. L. Pendergast’s origin story, which is a golden opportunity for longtime fans and newcomers to learn about Agent Pendergast’s strange and shocking first case.
-
HER COLD JUSTICE: To save a client accused of murder, defense attorney Keera Duggan must fight a complex web of corruption in Robert Dugoni’s riveting new novel of suspense.
-
MISSING SAM: Thrity Umrigar’s first thriller is the tense and twisty story of a woman who goes missing on a morning run and her wife's determination to both find her and clear her own name.
-
DEAR DEBBIE: Freida McFadden returns with a biting, subversive thriller about what happens when women finally choose to take justice into their own hands --- with killer results.

Last night, we learned the sad news that James Sallis passed away on Tuesday at the age of 81 following a long illness. Perhaps best known for his existentialist crime fiction and neo-noirs like DRIVE, which was adapted into a film starring Ryan Gosling, Sallis was also a poet, musicologist, literary historian, critic, editor and teacher.
According to Sallis’ publisher, Soho Press, “Jim wrote without cynicism about the strength of the human spirit and invested dignity into all his characters, no matter how far on the edge of society they live… He knew that good fiction was to be set against the faults of society but also serves to remind us that salvation is the realm of the individual.”
On Tuesday, February 3rd at 7pm ET, be sure to watch the Buzz Books Official Spring Summer 2026 Nonfiction Panel, a free virtual event.

The Carnegie Medals “serve as a guide to help adults select quality reading material. They are the first single-book awards for adult books given by the American Library Association and reflect the expert judgment and insight of library professionals who work closely with adult readers.”

Last Saturday, we watched live on Netflix as Alex Honnold successfully scaled the Taipei 101 skyscraper in Taiwan. Cory and his girlfriend, Kaltrina, love to rock climb, and Cory had turned us on to Alex climbing El Capitan in the documentary Free Solo, so it was fun to celebrate Cory’s birthday watching this. The casual way that Alex did this climb belied how dangerous it was.
No real weekend plans are ahead, and that suits me just fine! I have some things I want to conquer around the house. And, as always, just sitting in front of the fireplace reading makes me smile.
I am planning to tape the Australian Open men's and women's finals. Unlike Editorial Director Tom, I cannot set an alarm to wake up at 3:30am. We are pulling for Carlos Alcaraz in the men's final!

Not for the first time, Jill “Doll” Blaine finds herself hurtling toward earth, reconstituting as she falls. She plummets towards her newest charge, yet another soul she must usher into the afterlife, and lands headfirst in the circular drive of his ornate mansion. She has performed this sacred duty 343 times since her own death. Her charges, as a rule, have been greatly comforted in their final moments. But this charge, she soon discovers, isn’t like the others. The powerful K. J. Boone will not be consoled, because he has nothing to regret. He lived a big, bold life, and the world is better for it. Isn’t it? Crowds of people and animals --- worldly and otherworldly, alive and dead --- arrive, clamoring for a reckoning. Birds swarm the dying man’s room, and two oil-business cronies from decades past show up with chilling plans for his post-death future. Reviewed by Harvey Freedenberg.

THE FINAL SCORE by Don Winslow (Thriller)
Audiobook available, read by Peter Giles
THE FINAL SCORE is a collection of six all-new short novels from Don Winslow. The multi-million-dollar casino heist is impossible. That’s what makes it irresistible to a legendary robber facing the rest of his life in prison for his “Final Score.” An ambitious, hard-working college-bound teenager has a side job delivering illegal booze to “The Sunday List” until a crooked cop, a seductive customer and a fake guru threaten to end his dreams. Two wise guys tell each other a “True Story” over breakfast at a diner. It’s all laughs until someone else has to pick up the check. PENDERGAST: The Beginning by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child (Thriller)

It only took six months for the life of Special Agent Dwight Chambers to crumble around him. First, he lost his partner, and then, tragically, his wife. Returning to work at the New Orleans Field Office, Chambers is dismayed to find himself saddled with mentoring a brand-new FBI agent --- A. X. L. Pendergast. As Chambers tries to pull himself together, his enigmatic and exasperating junior partner pulls an outrageous stunt that gets both of them suspended. Pendergast welcomes the banishment, because it gives him the opportunity to investigate a peculiar murder in Mississippi that has captured his fancy. Chambers grudgingly goes along. STRANGERS by Belle Burden
and ANATOMY OF AN ALIBI by Ashley Elston
STRANGERS: A Memoir of Marriage by Belle Burden (Memoir)
I had the pleasure of meeting Belle Burden at a publisher event in November. After she told us her story, which is detailed in STRANGERS, I immediately requested a pre-release audio download. I love listening to memoirs on audio. After finishing it, I would share the book’s opening with friends, and they all said that it sounded like a really good novel. Then I would tell them that it’s a memoir.
So what did they react to?
In the first week of the pandemic, while Belle and her family were staying at their home on Martha’s Vineyard, life was going as well as it could be during those uncertain times. There were lovely fires in the fireplace, with wood that was carefully selected by Belle’s husband, and cocktails in the afternoon. Yes, there still was fear of COVID, but they felt safe where they were.
The following week, Belle was mopping the floor (I remember thinking that she knew exactly what she was doing when her world turned upside down), and the phone rang.

ANATOMY OF AN ALIBI by Ashley Elston (Psychological Thriller)
I thought it would be tough for Ashley Elston to match her previous thriller, FIRST LIE WINS. But she certainly did that, and more, with ANATOMY OF AN ALIBI.
Small towns often have their own hierarchy with those in power who call the shots. They typically are not elected; rather, they wield power because of money or who they know. Many have secrets that go back decades, all linked to their own nefarious deeds. In ANATOMY OF AN ALIBI, Ashley puts those who have this unelected power into the hot seat, as their deeds from the past come back. And this time judgment is made.
Right from the start, there is a setup where an impersonation can help uncover part of a secret. Camille Bayliss enlists Aubrey Price to impersonate her at a bar in St. Francisville, Louisiana. Why? Camille needs some time to spy on her husband, Ben, a man who tracks her every move.

TOM PAINE'S WAR: The Words That Rallied a Nation and the Founder for Our Time by Jack Kelly (History)
Audiobook available, read by Jim Seybert
Two hundred and fifty years ago, the Declaration of Independence marked the birth of the United States. But two essays of that era appealed even more directly to Americans’ feelings. In January 1776, Thomas Paine --- a recent immigrant to America --- published Common Sense. His straightforward argument upended the fraud of monarchy and dismantled the idea of aristocratic privilege that had dominated the world for centuries. He turned a rebellion over taxes and representation into a true Revolution. Having inspired patriots to declare their independence, Paine enlisted as a militia private. He saw Washington’s army suffer grievous defeats. He slogged through the mud with retreating troops to Pennsylvania. There, he wrote The American Crisis, the most stirring rallying cry in our history. It began: “These are the times that try men’s souls…” Reviewed by Philip Zozzaro.
