I know I have a one track mind when the email from the Gap says, "Get Great Deals on Summer's Bestsellers" and I open it thinking it's about books!

I am writing tonight from Washington, D.C. where I am in town for Book Expo America, the annual book trade show. It's a whirlwind weekend of books and authors. I will share more about this next week.

I typically work in silence, but this week I had a musical track running. I have been a huge Paul Simon fan since I was about 13. Tuesday his new CD, Surprise, hit stores and I raced to pick up a copy --- it's been cranked up on my stereo ever since. It's one of those rare works that you hear differently each time you listen --- and it's chock full of lyrics that make me think like some of my favorite books. These days my sons like Simon's music as much as me. Jesse Kornbluth, the co-Founder of The Book Report Network, knew this and asked my older son to guest write for him on his site, HeadButler.com. I had a great trip to the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books where the events were just terrific! There's too much to share in this opener, but you can reference my three-part blog about it if you want to read more about the events and festivities. For those of you who wrote wondering what I read on the plane --- on the flight out it was THE KING OF LIES by John Hart. For the flight back it was IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN WHAT HE SAID by Eden Collinsworth. Both were really enjoyable reading, which I was glad to have along.
