Archives - Weekly Update

I feel like I spend a good amount of time organizing and reorganizing my bookshelves. The other day, Francesca and I did a “re-file” of the shelves of upcoming books, pruning those that I already read --- and lining up April, May, June and July books on shelves. We also re-shelved the January through March books that I never got to read, but insist I still want to read. Now mind you, there are hundreds of books (actually a lot more than that) that I have wanted to read from the last 27 years since we started Bookreporter, and they are shelved beside those that I have read.

Now that spring is here, I am waiting for the buds to appear on the trees. There will be a day soon when the palette outside turns from brown and gray to green. Note: I am not sure why they are talking about the possibility of SNOW on Sunday. I thought we were beyond thinking white.

I also am perusing MARTHA STEWART'S GARDENING HANDBOOK, which came out this week, for ideas for planting. We are moving two big hydrangea bushes, and I am contemplating what goes into those slots.

I am reading ONE GOOD THING by Georgia Hunter. Set in Italy during World War II, it's  the story of two young Jewish women, Lili and Esti, and Esti’s son, Theo. They are trying to survive and stay one step ahead of the Nazis, Mussolini’s racial laws, and everyone else who cannot be trusted.

Georgia’s parents met in Italy in the ‘70s. They both were Americans and lived there for 17 years, and Georgia went back there to visit often. She wanted to write about Italy during World War II as it has not been explored as much as other places in Europe and Japan.

For years, my sons loved my line about whether March came in like a lion or a lamb. It came in here like a lion, and the winds have been rather crazy all week. Last night, the covers blew off our outdoor furniture. May March end like a lamb. There is no way we want a lion/lion month!

This is my least favorite weekend of the year as we move the clocks ahead to Daylight Saving Time. I know, I know, everyone loves daylight in the evening. But my weekend hours are precious as that is typically when I have time to read. I guess I will need to read faster.
