This is the season for gratitude.
Let me start with you, our readers. Thank you for reading this newsletter and being a part of our Bookreporter audience. We appreciate you! We love pulling together weekly updates for you, as well as our lineup of events. But none of it would matter if it was not for you joining us each week to read our suggestions --- and watching and listening to the interviews and preview events that we produce. We truly love what we do and enjoy bringing it to you.
My team here is small but mighty. Tom Donadio has been with us for 23 of our almost 30 years. His skill at selecting books for review --- and matching them with the right reviewer --- is the reason that we consistently bring you more than a dozen books to consider each week. (For those of you who are counting, there are fewer in this newsletter because of the short week!). He has his eye on what is being talked about and what people will be talking about. Every Sunday night, I write the publishers to let them know about the reviews that we have run, and I always marvel at the range of what we share with you. I am so very, very lucky to have him on our team. He also remembers titles and authors, and when I have amnesia about a title or an author, he is right there to fill in the blanks! He also is a brilliant “voice of God” on all of our live programs.
Francesca Smith runs our social media, works on all of our contests, and has another role with us on the other side of our business where we build and maintain author websites. She also edited all the videos for our Book Group Speed Dating program. She has a “can do” attitude, which I really appreciate. In addition, she stays on top of multiple projects with an ease that I admire. She is unflappable. Trust me, the pace here can be pretty crazy, so her calm energy is so important! On the days that she works with me here at the house, I always learn something new about how I can work more efficiently. Yes, having a twentysomething around is super helpful. She is very patient in showing me all kinds of tricks! She also keeps me on top of all things pop culture.
Our reviewers are far-flung, but reading their work, I feel like I have sat in a room with so many of them. I love seeing what they bring to us each week with their spot-on commentary --- and the way they can put a book in context. Imagine that over the last 29 years, I think I have met only seven of them in person. Maybe not even that many! But they are huge voices that are shared each week here. And I am so grateful to them.
Melanie Steinberg edits our Word of Mouth feature. Yes, there is someone on our team noting when readers sharing their feedback have an incorrect title or an author's name is spelled wrong. Under Melanie's guidance, I always have confidence that this feature will look as sharp as the rest of the site. She also lets me know what her book group is reading. She started the group years ago in her neighborhood in Florida, and she has helped it continue to be a great place for book discussions. I love that they honored her recently for her hard work with this.
BOOK OF LIVES is the long-awaited memoir from one of the greatest storytellers of our time, Margaret Atwood. Here, she unfolds the story of her life, linking seminal moments to the books that have shaped our literary landscape --- from the cruel year that spawned CAT’S EYE to the Orwellian 1980s Berlin where she wrote THE HANDMAID’S TALE.
Pauline Finch has our review and says, “It seems as if BOOK OF LIVES is a long-overdue series of intense café conversations in which we experience a consummate author talking about not a controlled and contained selfhood, but a continued journey to discover how her many selves learned to harmonize with, and transform, the world as she encountered it.”
Kathy Reichs returns with a twisty, magnetic thriller featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. In EVIL BONES, the 24th installment in the series, Tempe finds herself enmeshed in a series of grisly animal killings that escalate into something far more sinister.
According to Ray Palen in his review, “EVIL BONES is by far the most demented and disturbing entry” in the series. He goes on to say, “This is a dark, brooding thriller of the highest order that also plays out as a first-rate murder mystery, featuring a killer who is operating on an entirely different wavelength and is not easy to stop or identify.”
We also are reviewing these books this week:
-
WE DID OK, KID: Academy Award–winning actor Sir Anthony Hopkins delves into his illustrious film and theater career, difficult childhood, and path to sobriety in this honest, moving and long-awaited memoir.
-
THE SEVEN RINGS: #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts concludes her compelling Lost Bride trilogy as two women --- one dead, one alive --- prepare for a terrifying final showdown.
-
ROBERT B. PARKER’S SHOWDOWN: Spenser may have uncovered an explosive secret that threatens the career of a controversial figure in this latest installment of Robert B. Parker’s beloved series, penned by Mike Lupica.
-
LADIES IN WAITING: In honor of Jane Austen’s 250th birthday, nine authors --- Adriana Trigiani, Sarah MacLean, Eloisa James, Elinor Lipman, Audrey Bellezza, Karen Dukess, Emily Harding, Nikki Payne and Diana Quincy --- have come together with wildly imaginative reboots of the lives of several of Austen’s minor characters.
Revisiting My “Bookreporter Talks To” Interview with Georgia Hunter
Out in paperback this week is ONE GOOD THING by Georgia Hunter, a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick that tells the heart-wrenching story of a young woman entrusted with a boy’s life as WWII rages in Italy. I talked to Georgia about the book in April when it released in hardcover. So if you missed the interview or would like to check it out again, you can watch it here or listen to the podcast here.

This Saturday, November 29th is Indies First, a national campaign of activities and events in support of independent bookstores. It’s held every year in conjunction with Small Business Saturday, the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
The American Booksellers Association has named LeVar Burton to be their Indie Bookstore Ambassador for 2025-2026. Burton is an actor, director, producer and podcaster whose decades-long body of work includes “Roots,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “Reading Rainbow.”
Burton says, “From my earliest memories, books carried me beyond the world I knew. They let me explore distant planets, ancient kingdoms, and lives very different from my own. Independent bookstores are where those explorations began. They are sanctuaries of possibility where a single story can change a life…. Step inside, wander the shelves, ask questions, and follow your curiosity. Every book you open is an invitation to imagine, to learn, and to see the world anew. But you don’t have to take my word for it!”

As a fan of both authors, having read some books by each of them, I look forward to reading these new releases. I have been an avid reader since childhood, had the privilege of being a board member and officer of a public library system for many years, and am now sharing the joy of reading with my grandchildren. I can't wait to dive in, and I plan to pass it around to my book club friends after I have finished. Thank you for all you do. I have been a faithful newsletter reader for more than 20 years. Your content is superb, and I've also caught a few of the 'Bookaccino Live' videos and enjoyed them as well. Happy Thanksgiving, and thanks again!”

The Mellon Foundation has launched a historic $50 million initiative to bolster literary arts. One of the things they want to sponsor is book festivals! See more here. This is needed considering the stats that only about 16% of the population read for pleasure.
Mercury moves out of retrograde on Saturday. I cannot wait! This particular period of Mercury retrograde has been crazy. I feel like everything that I have done, I have done twice.
We are hosting Thanksgiving here. As always, we have a very ambitious menu. For appetizers, there will be carrot soup served in shot glasses and butternut squash ravioli with sage butter sauce, among other culinary delights. We are not a big pumpkin pie family. I am making a key lime pie, we bought a strawberry rhubarb pie, and I am making a cranberry cake.
Read on, and have a great NINE days!

Featured Review: BOOK OF LIVES by Margaret Atwood
BOOK OF LIVES: A Memoir of Sorts by Margaret Atwood (Memoir)
Audiobook available, read by Margaret Atwood
Raised by ruggedly independent, scientifically minded parents --- entomologist father, dietician mother --- Margaret Atwood spent most of each year in the wild forest of northern Quebec. This childhood was unfettered and nomadic, sometimes isolated, but also thrilling and beautiful. From this unconventional start, Atwood unfolds the story of her life, linking seminal moments to the books that have shaped our literary landscape --- from the cruel year that spawned CAT’S EYE to the Orwellian 1980s Berlin where she wrote THE HANDMAID’S TALE. In pages bursting with bohemian gatherings, her magical life with the wildly charismatic writer Graeme Gibson, and major political turning points, we meet poets, bears, Hollywood actors and larger-than-life characters straight from the pages of an Atwood novel. EVIL BONES: A Temperance Brennan Novel by Kathy Reichs (Mystery/Thriller)
Audiobook available, read by Linda Emond
Small creatures have been turning up throughout Charlotte, North Carolina, mutilated and displayed in a bizarre manner. But one day, Temperance Brennan gets a disturbing call. The perp is upping the ante. This find could be human. Tempe visits the scene and discovers that the victim is a dog. As one who has always found animal cruelty abhorrent, Tempe agrees to help apprehend the person responsible, and she acquires an equally outraged ally in semi-retired homicide detective Erskine “Skinny” Slidell. Then a woman is found disfigured and posed in a manner that mimics the animal killings. Subsequently, people Tempe cares about begin to go missing until it becomes clear she is being taunted, the target in a sick game that has her and Slidell racing against a ticking clock and facing a terrifying question: “What is pure evil?” Reviewed by Ray Palen.

Featured Review: WE DID OK, KID by Anthony Hopkins
WE DID OK, KID: A Memoir by Anthony Hopkins (Memoir)
Audiobook available, read by Kenneth Branagh with the author
Born and raised in Port Talbot --- a small Welsh steelworks town --- amid war and depression, Sir Anthony Hopkins grew up around men who were tough, to say the least, and eschewed all forms of emotional vulnerability in favor of alcoholism and brutality. A struggling student in school, he was deemed by his peers, his parents and other adults as a failure with no future ahead of him. But, on a fateful Saturday night, the disregarded Welsh boy watched the 1948 adaptation of Hamlet, sparking a passion for acting that would lead him on a path that no one could have predicted. With candor and a voice that is both arresting and vulnerable, Sir Anthony recounts his various career milestones and provides a once-in-a-lifetime look into the brilliance behind some of his most iconic roles. ROBERT B. PARKER’S SHOWDOWN by Mike Lupica
ROBERT B. PARKER'S SHOWDOWN: A Spenser Novel by Mike Lupica (Mystery)
Audiobook available, read by Joe Mantegna
Vic Hale is one of the biggest --- and loudest --- podcasters in the nation and got there by spewing overheated rhetoric that’s reviled by some but loved by even more. His particular brand of “entertainment” is so successful, he’s about to sign the biggest contract in the history of online broadcasting. Vic is riding high…until he gets a visit from Spenser. Spenser is there on behalf of Daniel Lopez, a young man who believes Hale may be his father. It’s a potentially explosive revelation for a man in the podcaster’s position, and it might even be enough to blow up his massive new deal. That could explain the bodies that start popping up --- bodies connected in one way or another with the mystery surrounding Daniel’s birth. There are a lot of questions remaining, and Spenser is going to have to find the answers before someone shuts Hale or Daniel up for good. Reviewed by Ray Palen.
