I did a books presentation at my local health club this week. It’s the second time that I have done an event like this, and it was so much fun. I structured it like our “Bookaccino Live” events, but this time it was with “me” live as well. It was a great opportunity to share the books that we are championing to a live audience.
During this week, I have heard from some of the attendees, and they remarked on how they loved getting a list of what they may want to explore. I find that these days there are so few outlets writing about books, and readers still crave book conversation. I am hoping that some of them subscribe to this newsletter!
On Tuesday, Tom Donadio and I went to a wonderful luncheon hosted by W. W. Norton & Company. Yann Martel (who many of you know as the author of LIFE OF PI) and David Guterson (his break-out book was SNOW FALLING ON CEDARS) each have new novels coming out, and we so enjoyed hearing them talk about them.
Yann’s SON OF NOBODY, which releases on March 31st, is a “retelling of the Trojan War from two commoners: an ancient soldier and a modern scholar.” David’s EVELYN IN TRANSIT, which will be out on January 20th, is “about a mother who's been told that her son is the reincarnation of a Tibetan Buddhist lama, and who's been asked to consider sending him far away to live in a monastery, wear robes and be celibate.”
We appreciated that Yann and David stuck around to take a photo with us alongside their beautifully designed covers.
My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Lily King. I enjoyed talking to her about her new novel, the instant New York Times bestseller HEART THE LOVER, which will be a Bookreporter.com Bets On title. It also is this month’s Barnes & Noble Book Club selection and #1 Indie Next pick.
Lily shares that she was working on a political murder mystery that came to a grinding halt when she got a manuscript from Ann Patchett, which led her to write college scenes that were the start of HEART THE LOVER. She talks about a significant plot point that was changed in the manuscript about 12 days before the book was submitted, as well as the long path to getting the right cover. She also touches on how this novel is a companion to her previous work, WRITERS & LOVERS.
Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. We will feature my Bets On commentary in next week’s newsletter.
We are thrilled to announce that Clare Leslie Hall will be next month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group guest. The event will be held on Wednesday, November 19th at 2pm ET, and you can sign up here for it. Please note the afternoon timing as Clare lives in the UK. Our usual start time of 8pm ET would’ve had Clare joining us at 1am her time!
We will talk about Clare’s New York Times bestseller, BROKEN COUNTRY, a Reese’s Book Club pick and Bets On selection that released earlier this year and has sold over a million copies. Reese Witherspoon recently said that this was her favorite book of the year: “That one made me cry.”
There will be a two-part Q&A session after I talk to Clare.
For the first part, those who are asking a question on camera will be featured. This includes spending time with Clare backstage in our virtual green room before the show starts. If you would like to ask your question "live on screen" this way, please email me with the subject line "Clare" by noon ET on November 19th. Be sure to include your name, city and state, as well as your question. If you do not want to appear on camera but still would like to ask a question, please note that you want to be off camera, and share your question --- adding your name, city and state.
Then we will take questions from other members of the audience.
October’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group Event
On Wednesday night, I had the pleasure of talking to this month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group guest, Paula Hawkins, about her most recent thriller, THE BLUE HOUR, a Bets On pick that is now available in paperback. We will share the video and podcast with you in next week’s newsletter.
We are celebrating a quarter century of ReadingGroupGuides.com with our 25th Anniversary Feature, which includes a BIG contest that we had lots of fun pulling together.
We looked back and created a list of some of the most discussed books each year since Reading Group Guides launched in 2000. Doing this brought up so many memories and led to a lot of discussion.
Among these titles are WHITE TEETH by Zadie Smith (2000), THE KITE RUNNER by Khaled Hosseini (2003), THE HELP by Kathryn Stockett (2009), ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE by Anthony Doerr (2014), THIS TENDER LAND by William Kent Krueger (2019), LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY by Bonnie Garmus (2022), and THE LION WOMEN OF TEHRAN by Marjan Kamali (2024).
One lucky reader will win ALL 25 books, while five others will win five of these books.
The deadline for your entries is Monday, December 1st at noon ET. This gives you plenty of time to enter --- and to spread the word about the contest to your friends and family!
In addition to the contest, our Anniversary Feature includes the Most Requested Guides of last year and this year (so far); tips on starting, running and maintaining a book group; our Book Group Checkup feature; and much more.
Our Bookreporter Reader Survey closed today. Many thanks to all who answered it! We look forward to seeing the results and finding out more about our readers.
Our 25th Anniversary Book Group Survey is still up on Reading Group Guides. We’re extending the deadline, keeping it open until Monday, December 1st at noon ET to line up with the timing of our anniversary contest. If you are in a book group, we would really appreciate it if you took the survey.
We haven’t done a survey of this magnitude for book groups in 10 years! The more we can learn about the current practices of book groups, the more we can share with our publishing partners to let them know what groups today are like.
We are awarding one reader who completes the survey a $250 gift card to the bookstore of their choice, while three others will win a $50 gift card to the bookstore of their choice.
We all know John Grisham as the #1 New York Times bestselling author of numerous legal thrillers. But never one to rest on his laurels, Grisham is back with his first-ever whodunit. In THE WIDOW, a small-time lawyer accused of murder races to find the real killer to clear his name.
Stuart Shiffman has our review and says, “During his nearly 40-year writing career, Grisham has used his books as a sounding board for a number of important topics: corruption by corporations, the influence of money in judicial campaigns, the tension between the law and justice, the death penalty and the evil of wrongful convictions. Many of these issues appear in THE WIDOW…. The best tribute I can offer is to simply observe that this novel is ‘a Grisham.’ Whether it is your first or your 50th, it is a wonderful read.”
I listened to a few chapters of THE WIDOW this week, which is narrated by Michael Beck, and it was terrific. I will get back to it!
Word of Mouth Contest Reminder
THE WIDOW is one of our current Word of Mouth prizes, along with THE TIN MEN by Nelson DeMille and Alex DeMille, which we will review next week. Submit your comments about the books you’ve read by Friday, October 31st at noon ET, and you’ll be in the running to win both these titles.
The newly released THE PROVING GROUND is the eighth installment in Michael Connelly’s Lincoln Lawyer series, which is the basis for the Netflix series of the same name. Mickey Haller is back with a case against an AI company whose product may have been responsible for the murder of a young girl.
We have glowing praise for the book from Ray Palen, who has this to say in his review: “I can proudly state that THE PROVING GROUND is my favorite Lincoln Lawyer novel and one of the best books that Connelly has ever written. There is not a single moment that drags, and I could not turn the pages quickly enough.”
Don’t Forget to Enter Our Contest for Janet Dailey’s Epic Tale of the Settling of the American West
We are continuing to give you a chance to win one of 25 copies of CALDER STRONG in our Historical Fiction Author Spotlight. Set in 1929 Blue Moon, Montana, this is the fifth installment in Janet Dailey’s Calder Brand series and is perfect for fans of “Yellowstone.” Be sure to submit your entries by Friday, October 31st at noon ET.
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:
-
KING SORROW: In Joe Hill’s chilling tale of modern-world dangers, dark academia, and the unexpected consequences of revenge, six friends dabble in the occult and are tragically, horrifyingly successful --- calling forth an evil entity that demands regular human sacrifice.
-
FUTURE BOY: In his poignant, heartfelt and funny memoir, which he wrote with Nelle Fortenberry, Michael J. Fox talks about how, in 1985, he brought to life two iconic roles simultaneously --- Alex P. Keaton in “Family Ties” and Marty McFly in Back to the Future.
-
PAPER GIRL: Beth Macy, one of our most acclaimed chroniclers of the forces eroding America’s social fabric, has penned her most personal and powerful work: a reckoning with the changes that have rocked her own beloved small Ohio hometown.
-
THE GALLERY ASSISTANT: Perfect for fans of Katy Hays and Julia Bartz, this twisty and sinister thriller from Kate Belli follows a New York art gallery assistant reckoning with her past and now trapped in a web of deceit after an up-and-coming painter is murdered. I read this over my summer break and enjoyed it!
Remember to Vote in Our Poll
Our poll continues to ask which of 30 titles releasing in paperback this month you have read or are planning to read. Click here to let us know by Friday, October 31st at noon ET.

Reader Mail:
Kate wrote, “I really enjoyed your talk with Paula Hawkins as I do all the author talks you've done. My tiny toy poodle found it very interesting, too. Robby is four pounds and sat watching the screen for most of the evening!”
Paula wrote, “I am a winner! Thank you 'Bookaccino Live' for the copy of Philippa Gregory’s new novel, BOLEYN TRAITOR. She is one of my favorite authors. Looking forward to reading this!” Henry and Arthur (her cats) are also excited!
Laurie wrote, “Just wanted to say thank you! There’s nothing better than book mail, so I was thrilled to see you sent me a copy of WRECK, Catherine Newman’s new novel. I’m looking forward to reading it, so thanks for the lovely gift.”
Becky wrote, “Thank you for the newsletter. Always inspiring! Perhaps I missed it. Did you review THEO OF GOLDEN by Allen Levi? I am finding it delightful and so relevant to this period of history with the presence of vitriolic anger, violence and hatred. Division instead of unity. What is a purposeful life? I loved this book and so did my book club. This is his first novel. His writing is significantly exceptional. He has a very interesting background. Looking forward to my journey with you and your astute evaluations of books. My gratitude.” This book is coming out on November 11th, and I am going to look into it.
How Reese Witherspoon and Harlan Coben Came to Write Together: Last week, I noted that I was wondering how Reese and Harlan came to write GONE BEFORE GOODBYE. So here’s the skinny on that from a USA Today article. Reese had the original idea!
I am reading the aforementioned THE TIN MEN in preparation for my interview with Alex DeMille on Tuesday night at 7pm at Barnes & Noble on the Upper West Side. If you are there, please say hi. I am enjoying the read. Nelson and Alex crafted wonderful books together. In the early pages at the start of THE TIN MEN, Alex shares what it was like working with his dad on this book.
I am listening to NOBODY’S GIRL by Virginia Roberts Giuffre, which is narrated by Thérèse Plummer and Gabra Zackman. What a sad and horrific childhood Virginia had even before she met Jeffrey Epstein! The content doesn't make it an easy listen, but Thérèse as a narrator is excellent.
Monday night is book group, and we are going to discuss THE CORRESPONDENT by Virginia Evans. I am looking forward to their thoughts on it. I have an idea for November and will see if the group agrees.
My husband’s Senior Golf Team won the state championship on Tuesday! I am really happy for him. Instead of a cash prize, there was a trophy that stays at the clubhouse. Since I still have trophies from when the kids were young, I am glad they did not each get one!
I am trying to get life organized for fall. The house plants that lived outside all summer are now in the garage so the bugs could crawl off of them before making their way into the house. We really need a greenhouse and are noodling that. At least *I* am noodling it. Tom’s thoughts have been more on the two new storage containers that were added outside. What goes in those?
Spectacular fall weather is happening in the New York area!
Read on, and have a great week.

THE PROVING GROUND by Michael Connelly
THE PROVING GROUND: A Lincoln Lawyer Novel by Michael Connelly (Legal Thriller)
Audiobook available, read by Peter Giles
Following his “resurrection walk” and need for a new direction, Mickey Haller turns to public interest litigation, filing a civil lawsuit against an artificial intelligence company whose chatbot told a 16-year-old boy that it was okay for him to kill his ex-girlfriend for her disloyalty. Representing the victim’s family, Mickey’s case explores the mostly unregulated and exploding AI business and the lack of training guardrails. Along the way he joins up with a journalist named Jack McEvoy, who wants to be a fly on the wall during the trial in order to write a book about it. But Mickey puts him to work going through the mountain of printed discovery materials in the case. McEvoy’s digging ultimately delivers the key witness, a whistleblower who has been too afraid to speak up. The case is fraught with danger because billions are at stake. Reviewed by Ray Palen.

Joseph’s childhood friend, Chase Calder, has inherited the rival Calder operation, and for both young men, longstanding battles over water and grass continue. But there’s yet another weight on Joseph’s shoulders.
Years ago, Joseph abandoned his teenage love, Annabeth, to court glamorous Lucy Merriweather, a seductive trickster. The affair, of course, imploded, and Annabeth went on to marry a farmer, Silas Mosby, and have two children. But now Joseph has spotted Annabeth and her family in town...and he has no doubt that her oldest, a boy, is his.
Joseph’s love for Annabeth never died --- and Annabeth, too, still has feelings for him, though they’re tainted by anger. Learning that Silas is involved in a bootlegging ring leaves Joseph troubled. His natural father, Mason Dollarhide, is a reformed bootlegger, but the two have long been estranged, and Joseph won’t ask his advice.
Meanwhile, Joseph feels pressed to start his own family. The town’s sweet new schoolteacher seems a perfect match. FUTURE BOY: Back to the Future and My Journey Through the Space-Time Continuum by Michael J. Fox and Nelle Fortenberry (Memoir)
Audiobook available, read by Michael J. Fox
In early 1985, Michael J. Fox’s days were already dedicated to rehearsing and taping the hit sitcom “Family Ties,” but then the chance of a lifetime came his way. Soon, he committed his nights to a new time-travel adventure film being directed by Robert Zemeckis and produced by Steven Spielberg --- Back to the Future. Fox’s nightly commute from a soundstage at Paramount to the back lot at Universal Studios, from one dream job to another, would become his own space-time continuum. PAPER GIRL: A Memoir of Home and Family in a Fractured America by Beth Macy (Memoir)
Audiobook available, read by Beth Macy
Urbana, Ohio, was not a utopia when Beth Macy grew up there in the ’70s and ’80s. Her dad was known as the town drunk, which hurt, as did their poverty. But Urbana had a healthy economy and thriving schools, and Macy had middle-class schoolmates whose families became her role models. But as her mother’s health declined in 2020, she couldn’t shake the feeling that her town had dramatically hardened. Macy had grown up as the paper girl, delivering the local newspaper, which was the community’s civic glue. Now she found scant local news and precious little civic glue. This was not an assignment Macy had ever imagined taking on, but after her mother’s death, she decided to figure out what happened to Urbana in the 40 years since she’d left. The result is an astonishing book that brings into focus our most urgent set of national issues. Reviewed by Rebecca Munro.

RUNNING DEEP: Bravery, Survival, and the True Story of the Deadliest Submarine in World War II by Tom Clavin (History)
Audiobook available, read by George Newbern
There was one submarine that outfought all other boats in the Silent Service in World War II: the USS Tang. Captain Richard Hetherington O’Kane commanded the attack submarine that sunk more tonnage, rescued more downed aviators, and successfully completed more surface attacks than any other American submarine. The Tang achieved its greatest success on October 24, 1944, when it took on an entire Japanese convoy and destroyed it. But its 24th and last torpedo boomeranged, returning to strike the Tang. Mortally wounded, the boat sunk. After hours of struggle, nine of the 87 crewmen, including O’Kane, made it to the surface. Captured by the Japanese, the Tang sailors joined other submariners and flyers at a “torture camp,” where O’Kane was a special target. Against all odds, when the camp was liberated in August 1945, O’Kane still lived. Reviewed by Curtis Edmonds.

Shortly after, he walked out on his wife and their three young children. His oldest son, Joe McGinniss Jr., went on to become a writer himself, known for his critically acclaimed novels THE DELIVERY MAN and CAROUSEL COURT.
