It was lovely --- and much needed --- to have last week off. Talking to Tom and Francesca on Monday, I could tell that they took time to relax and kick it back a notch, which I was happy to see. The weather was spectacular, and I spent the entire week outside, which was a real delight.
I also learned that my new Fitbit does not count steps in the water. This fun fact came to me after I spent an hour walking in the water. I am on the hunt for a tracker that measures water steps. Ideas are welcome!
I had a lot of time to read last week. I sat poolside here at the house and at the health club. At the latter, I loved seeing two women using my “in the pool” reading style. One was reading DON’T LET HIM IN by Lisa Jewell, and the other was reading DAUGHTER OF MINE by Megan Miranda. Women after my own heart!
Meanwhile, poolside I sat next to a woman reading an e-book. I had to ask what it was, and it turned out to be ATMOSPHERE by Taylor Jenkins Reid. We chatted about that for a bit, and then she noted that she absolutely loved BROKEN COUNTRY. This led me to share that two of Clare Leslie Hall’s older titles are being published here in the States.
I devoured the first one, DAYS YOU WERE MINE, over the break, and I am looking forward to PICTURES OF HIM, which releases on September 30th. In DAYS YOU WERE MINE, once again I could see Clare’s skill at crafting a story. We have our review later in this newsletter, and it will be a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection. It would be interesting for a book group to look at BROKEN COUNTRY and these two earlier books in a discussion.
I love William Kent Krueger’s Cork O’Connor series. His latest, APOSTLE’S COVE, which we review this week and will be a Bets On pick, is another stellar read. Was justice misapplied years ago? Cork takes a look at a case to see if the verdict was fair. It is deftly handled in Kent’s hands. And for the record, if you have not read Kent before, you can pick up with this book and get enough backstory to enjoy it. I am betting you will want to read more than one!
PLEASE DON’T LIE is the first novel that Christina Baker Kline and Anne Burt have written together, and they have crafted a twisty thriller. I have known Christina for years and met Anne earlier this year. Hayley lost her parents in a fire, and her sister shortly afterwards. She moves with her husband, Brandon, to a rural area in the Adirondacks where he grew up. There she has to grapple with what she knows and the secrets this town holds. There are many, and there is not a clear idea of who to trust. We are reviewing the book this week, and it will be a Bets On selection. I look forward to seeing more from them!
I loved Katherine Faulkner’s earlier books, GREENWICH PARK and THE OTHER MOTHERS. So I am happy to share that THE BREAK-IN is another terrific domestic thriller. There is a break-in at a posh home in London while a play date is happening. Alice, who is hosting the play date, kills the intruder. Social media goes crazy about this, and she takes some “interesting” steps to mitigate her role here. It’s a book where everyone is a suspect at one time or another, and the pace and the action keep ramping up. Yes, it will be a Bets On selection, as Katherine's previous titles were.
THE GALLERY ASSISTANT by Kate Belli is set in New York City in the months after 9/11. In November 2001, Chloe Harlow awakens remembering a party from the night before, but she is not at all sure how she got home to her Brooklyn apartment. While she is contemplating this, NYPD detectives arrive at her house to let her know that the party’s host, a celebrated new artist, is dead.
Chloe knew the woman who was killed. She was a rising exhibitor at the family-run upscale art gallery in Manhattan where Chloe works --- a place where high-priced art is sold. She's come to know many of the wealthy buyers and their purchases. But as Chloe stumbles her way through her days, she is trying to piece together clues left by the artist, as well as signals she is seeing around her. Yes, it’s a page-turner!
I listened to MY OTHER HEART by Emma Nanami Strenner, a “Read with Jenna” pick, which is narrated by Joy Osmanski. I loved hearing Joy share the story of Kit and Sabrina, both of whom are Asian. Kit was adopted by a wealthy white couple. Sabrina is being raised by her hard-working Chinese mother. But there is a twist in all of this. At the beginning of the book, a woman named Mimi lost her toddler daughter in the Philadelphia airport. How does her loss impact this story? It is so well done!
Jen Hatmaker's memoir, AWAKE, starts with what I call a mic drop. Jen is in bed; it's the early hours of the morning, and she hears her pastor husband's voice texting a message to his girlfriend. Yes, you read that right. This cold open sets up what Jen explores in the rest of the book as she reassesses her life and looks back on how she was raised as a devout Christian --- and where she wants her life to be now. I listened to the audiobook, and I liked hearing the story in Jen’s voice. Plus, she has some extras on the audio as family, friends and others narrate the sections where she shares their words. They all enhanced the audio experience. The book goes on sale September 23rd.

My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Sharon Kurtzman. Her debut novel, THE LOST BAKER OF VIENNA, is inspired by her mother, aunt and grandmother's experiences as Holocaust survivors. The book, which we reviewed in the last newsletter and will be a Bets On pick, follows two timelines. In 1946 Vienna, Chana Rosenzweig navigates a dangerous love triangle while working in a hotel kitchen and pursuing her passion for baking. In 2018, Zoe Rosenzweig, a food writer, becomes obsessed with uncovering her family's history.
Sharon talks about her research on postwar Vienna, where she learned that the city was divided into four sections governed by the Allied powers. She emphasizes the importance of food and baking in the story, using it as a creative outlet and a means to convey the characters' experiences. Sharon shares her passion for baking, particularly her obsession with perfecting chocolate chip cookies and chocolate pecan pie as a teenager with one twist on an ingredient. Her website features an enhanced discussion guide that includes recipes.

We are featuring the aforementioned APOSTLE’S COVE, the 21st entry in William Kent Krueger’s Cork O’Connor series, in our New Release Spotlight.
When the book opens, Cork receives a call from his son, Stephen, who is working for a nonprofit dedicated to securing freedom for unjustly incarcerated inmates. Stephen tells his father that decades ago, as the newly elected sheriff of Tamarack County, Cork was responsible for sending an Ojibwe man named Axel Boshey to prison for a brutal murder that Stephen is certain he did not commit. Cork feels compelled to reinvestigate the crime. But the deeper he digs, the clearer it becomes that there are those in Tamarack County who are willing once again to commit murder to keep him from finding the truth.
Ray Palen has this to say in his review: “What I find most appealing about William Kent Krueger’s novels --- especially his enormously popular Cork O’Connor mysteries --- is how he is able to display a mashup of cultures with a Minnesota sheriff who is true to his northern locale while still infusing each story with Native American sensibilities that speak not only to the region but also to the fact that our protagonist is one-quarter Ojibwe…. Krueger’s deft writing style is on display from beginning to end in APOSTLE’S COVE, which never disappoints and is one of the most satisfying installments of this outstanding series.”
Kent has just started a book tour that includes nearly 50(!) appearances before the end of the year. He says, “It may sound exhausting, but I appreciate the chance to meet with readers everywhere and thank them for their support. I hope that if I’m signing at a bookstore in your area, you might take the time to drop by. I’d love a chance to talk with you.”
Another New Release Spotlight title we’re featuring this week is ALL THIS COULD BE YOURS by Hank Phillippi Ryan, which publishes on Tuesday and will be a Bets On selection.
Debut author Tessa Calloway is on a book tour for her instant bestseller, All This Could Be Yours. She receives standing ovations from adoring fans while her husband, Henry, and their two children cheer her on from their brand-new dream house. But she soon discovers that she’s being stalked by someone who's obsessed not only with sabotaging her career, but also with destroying her perfect family. Tessa fears that the fallout from an impossible decision she once made appears to be coming back to haunt her. If she can't untangle who's threatening to expose her darkest secrets, she'll lose her career, her family --- and possibly her life.
We will feature our review of ALL THIS COULD BE YOURS in next week’s newsletter, followed later this month by my interview with Hank and my Bets On commentary.
In addition to APOSTLE'S COVE, PLEASE DON'T LIE and DAYS YOU WERE MINE, we are featuring reviews of these two books:

Patrick Ryan’s much-talked-about adult fiction debut, BUCKEYE, is September’s Barnes & Noble and “Read with Jenna” book club picks. We were saddened to hear that Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, the prolific author of more than 80 books, passed away on Sunday at the age of 82 after a long illness. Best known as the creator of the Saint-Germain Vampire Cycle, Yarbro also penned the Chesterton Holte and Charlie Spotted Moon mystery series, as well as award-winning fantasy and science fiction, such as FALSE DAWN, ARIOSTO and TIME OF THE FOURTH HORSEMAN. She was named a World Horror Grandmaster in 2003, won a Bram Stoker Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009, and received a World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2014.
We learned of Yarbro’s passing from Wiley Saichek, the former Marketing/Publicity Director of our AuthorsOnTheWeb division, who worked on a number of publicity campaigns for her books over the years. He let us know that a GoFundMe has been set up to raise money for remaining care expenses that Yarbro’s insurance did not cover. Any and all help is welcomed by her estate.

Paula wrote, “What a nice surprise. Thank you for a copy of MARGUERITE BY THE LAKE by Mary Dixie Carter that I won as a 'Bookaccino Live' prize! I love watching 'Bookaccino Live' every month. And I love all of your programs. I am looking forward to reading this. Yes, Happy Reading!”
Barbara wrote about winning a copy of THE LOST BAKER OF VIENNA in our Fall Reading contest: “This book has been at the top of my TBR list. Having it arrive on the day I returned home from eye surgery made my spirits soar. It was also a special reminder that my eye will heal and I will read vociferously soon. I am grateful beyond words.”
Lindsey wrote about winning a copy of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO LORI LOVELY? in our Fall Reading contest: “Thank you so much! I received my copy today!”
Another winner of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO LORI LOVELY? was Patricia, who wrote, “Thank you so much! What a surprise it was to receive this book via FedEx today. It arrived even before your email telling me that I had won. I can't wait to read it and hopefully write a review that does it justice! I will send you whatever pictures and reviews I create. Thank you so much for bringing us news about great new books!”
Eleanor wrote, “I’m reading a wonderful book, THE CORRESPONDENT by Virginia Evans. I was wondering why you have not mentioned it in any of your newsletters. It's a national bestseller and a superb story with so much to discuss --- a cut above so much that is written today.” Our reviewers choose the books they want to review, and this one was not selected. That said, I take recommendations from readers, and I now have a copy of THE CORRESPONDENT to read. Fiona Davis also gave it a rave this week. So thank you for the suggestion, Eleanor.
Kathryn wrote, “A friend said I should read Greg Iles, so I picked up SOUTHERN MAN not knowing it would be his last. I read a half-dozen snippets at last week's book club. He wrote a lot about the last elections, racism and corruption in government. And he certainly spelled it out, targeting specific people in today's world. I heard some gasps with a couple of them and laughter with another. He wasn't afraid to spell it out! He knew it was his last book and there would be no repercussions. Interesting! I have another book of his on my TBR pile. They are big books but worth the read.”
We got some lovely notes about the 29th anniversary of Bookreporter, which we all appreciated. I am sharing a few with you here.
Denise wrote, “Happy Anniversary! I can remember when I thought 29 was old. Ha! I love your site and get so much value from your labor of love. Thanks so much to you and your small and mighty colleagues.”
Beth wrote, “I love Bookreporter and Reading Group Guides. I came to your site originally while searching for a guide to help with discussions of a book I had picked for a brand-new book club I formed. This was back in 2010. The book club is still going strong, and I am very glad that Bookreporter is as well! You have provided me with so many materials to keep a book club going strong --- book reviews, reading guides and author interviews. Here's to many more years of Bookreporter!”
Ann wrote, “Congratulations on 29 years of providing so much book and author information to us, your readers! I am very grateful. I was so sad to learn about Greg Iles' death. I met him years ago here in San Antonio while he was on a book tour. He was a delightful speaker and author.”
Barbara wrote, “You are doing a great job. Here's to many more anniversaries.”
Gail suggested a job title for our team member, Francesca: “How about Executive Tech Maven?”
Vonda Wright on “CBS Mornings”: Dr. Wright, an orthopedic surgeon, talked about her new book, UNBREAKABLE: A Woman's Guide to Aging with Power, which offers practical advice on fitness, diet, and living a long and healthy life. Click here to watch the interview.
“Hostage” on Netflix: I enjoyed this series. As I mentioned in the last newsletter, I really liked the two female leaders.
“Katrina: Come Hell and High Water” on Netflix: I am only one episode in, but this is so well done.
The Thursday Murder Club on Netflix: I loved the cast, but the pacing of the movie left a lot to be desired.
Unknown Number: The High School Catfish on Netflix: If you have any questions about how cell phone usage can get out of control and be harmful, this show will confirm it. I was shocked to see who the perpetrator was!
Patricia shared this CBS feature on one of the country’s oldest bookshops, calling it a “most interesting segment this morning!”
Over the break, I finally found sungold tomatoes at the farmers market. I had seen a recipe made with them in THE WISHBONE KITCHEN COOKBOOK. I had been looking for them since summer started, and I finally learned that they are more of a late-summer produce. Wow, this was an excellent recipe! We have made it three times already, and I am heading to the farmers market to get more of them on Sunday.
I have found a Cucumber Lime drink that I have been enjoying every day. It has cucumber, lime, ginger and a dash of honey in it. I got it from my health club newsletter and have been whirring up the blender, making it almost every day. Also, I made peach cobbler from a recipe I found in the New York Times. I would make it again, but I would use a lot less sugar.
We still are working on weekend plans here. I know the US Open women's and men's finals will be on the schedule. I was disappointed that Jessica Pegula lost in the women's semifinals. That said, I am rooting for Amanda Anisimova. I would love to see Carlos Alcaraz win the men’s title. I was trying to figure out what the impetus was for Carlos to shave his head. I know my son, Cory, did it twice for fundraisers. It turns out that Carlos' brother made a mistake while cutting his hair, and the only way to fix it was to shave it all off! Truly you cannot make something like this up. It's like the kid who cuts his sister's hair the day before school pictures!
I also have a lot of reading to do for upcoming events. Yes, even with all that I read over the break, there is so much more to read! We have a HUGE fall of reading coming up. Start asking people what they want for holiday gifts. It’s not too early to work on your book holiday shopping!
Read on, and have a great week.

APOSTLE’S COVE by William Kent Krueger
An Upcoming Bookreporter.com Bets On Title
APOSTLE'S COVE by William Kent Krueger (Mystery)
Audiobook available, read by David Chandler
A few nights before Halloween, as Cork O’Connor gloomily ruminates on his upcoming birthday, he receives a call from his son, Stephen, who is working for a nonprofit dedicated to securing freedom for unjustly incarcerated inmates. Stephen tells his father that decades ago, as the newly elected sheriff of Tamarack County, Cork was responsible for sending an Ojibwe man named Axel Boshey to prison for a brutal murder that Stephen is certain he did not commit.
Cork feels compelled to reinvestigate the crime, but that is easier said than done. Not only is it a closed case, but Axel Boshey is, inexplicably, refusing to help. The deeper Cork digs, the clearer it becomes that there are those in Tamarack County who are willing once again to commit murder to keep him from finding the truth.
At the same time, Cork’s seven-year-old grandson has his own theory about the investigation: the Windigo, that mythic cannibal ogre, has come to Tamarack County…and it won’t leave until it has sated its hunger for human blood.

DAYS YOU WERE MINE by Clare Leslie Hall (Fiction)
Previously published as MINE under the pseudonym Clare Empson
Audiobook available, read by Dominic Thorburn and Cassie Layton
Luke and Hannah live a happy and stable life in London as they prepare for the arrival of their first child, Samuel. All his life, Luke has known he was adopted, but he’s never felt the need to seek out his birth mother --- until he becomes a father himself. His first encounter with Alice is surreal, a sharp prick that barely scratches the surface of a painful past that neither of them has fully confronted. Alice sinks into memories of her life as a young artist in 1970s London, and of her tragic whirlwind romance with an enigmatic musician who would become Luke’s father. Meanwhile, Luke spirals as he comes face to face with his feelings of abandonment that he worked so hard to bury. September's roundup of New in Paperback fiction titles includes YOU LIKE IT DARKER, a collection of 12 short stories from the legendary Stephen King that delves into the darker part of life --- both metaphorical and literal --- many of which have never been published before; THE MEDICI RETURN, the 19th installment in Steve Berry's series starring Cotton Malone, who is on the hunt for a forgotten 16th-century Pledge of Christ, a sworn promise made by Pope Julius II that evidences a monetary debt owed by the Vatican; INTERMEZZO, an exquisitely moving story about grief, love and family --- but especially love --- from Sally Rooney; and THE AUTHOR’S GUIDE TO MURDER by Beatriz Williams, Lauren Willig and Karen White, a locked-room whodunit in which three very different American novelists become prime suspects when a famous writer is found dead in the book-lined study of a remote Scottish castle.
Among our nonfiction highlights are REVENGE OF THE TIPPING POINT, a brand-new volume from Malcolm Gladwell that reframes the lessons of his groundbreaking first book, THE TIPPING POINT, in a startling and revealing light; BONE OF THE BONE, a searing and insightful volume of the brilliant and provocative essays that established Sarah Smarsh as one of the most important commentators on America’s class problem; AMERICA FIRST by H. W. Brands, which recounts the fierce debate over America's role in the world in the runup to World War II through its two most important figures --- President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who advocated intervention, and his isolationist nemesis, aviator and popular hero Charles Lindbergh; and SHE-WOLVES, in which award-winning historian Paulina Bren tells the propulsive story of how women infiltrated Wall Street from the swinging '60s to 9/11.

A TRUCE THAT IS NOT PEACE by Miriam Toews (Memoir)
Audiobook available, read by Miriam Toews
“Why do you write?” the organizer of a literary event in Mexico City asks Miriam Toews. Each attempted answer from Toews --- all of them unsatisfactory to the organizer --- surfaces new layers of grief, guilt and futility connected to her sister's suicide. She has been keeping up, she realizes, a decades-old internal correspondence, filling a silence she barely understands. And we, her readers, come to see that the question is as impossible to answer as deciding whether to live life as a comedy or a tragedy. Marking the first time that Toews has written her own life in nonfiction, A TRUCE THAT IS NOT PEACE explores the uneasy pact a writer makes with memory. Reviewed by Pauline Finch.

Meredith hopes that the literary ghosts on the train will nudge Joe's muse awake, and he'll be inspired to write again. After their first evening spent getting to know some of their fellow travelers, Joe pulls out his laptop and opens a new document. The next morning, Joe and Meredith are shocked to witness that the cabin next door has become a crime scene. They soon find themselves caught up in an Agatha Christie-esque murder investigation. BACKSTAGE: Stories of a Writing Life by Donna Leon (Memoir)
Audiobook available, read by Suzanne Toren
Donna Leon’s memoir, WANDERING THROUGH LIFE, gave her legions of fans a colorful tour through her life --- from her childhood in New Jersey to her adventures in China and Iran, to her love of Venice and opera. Nowhere, however, did she discuss her writing life. In BACKSTAGE, Donna reveals her admiration for, and inspiration from, the great crime novelists Ruth Rendell and Ross Macdonald, examining their approach to storytelling as she dissects her favorite books of theirs. She expresses her love for Charles Dickens’ GREAT EXPECTATIONS and her appreciation for Sir Walter Scott’s generosity of spirit. And she chronicles the amount of research she undertakes to be able to present authentically, through Guido Brunetti and his colleagues, places and characters far from her own experience. All are drawn to the enigmatic Lady Duxbury, a thrice-widowed countess whose husbands’ untimely deaths have sparked whispers of murder. As the women form deep, heartwarming friendships, they uncover secrets about their marriages, their pasts and the risks they face. Their courage is their only weapon in the oppressive world that has kept them silent. But when secrets are deadly, one misstep could cost them everything. Reviewed by L. Dean Murphy.
