Mark It Down: Nice Weekend Weather on Tap
Happy First Day of Summer! I read somewhere that the last time it did not rain at some point on a weekend in the New York area was November 16 and 17, 2024. I think that weather trend ends this weekend, and I am more than ready for it. It’s also been over 90 degrees, which means it's time to float in the pool and read, or stand by the side of the pool and read. The clouds that draped themselves over us earlier in the week made it feel like it was summer in a very gray San Francisco.
This has been such a busy week --- I was in New York City three times --- and sitting in traffic, dealing with parking, and getting from one place to the next is exhausting. I truly do not miss commuting; I forgot how it takes so much energy. But on the bright side, it’s great for audiobook listening, and I do love getting together with people. I just want to beam myself there!
Last night, Tom, Francesca and I went to the opening cocktail party at the 20th Annual ThrillerFest Conference. Above you can see a photo of Tom and me with Julie Clark on the left and Ashley Elston between Tom and me. We all had such fun talking to them celebrating Julie’s recent New York Times bestseller and a future Bookreporter.com Bets On selection, THE GHOSTWRITER, as well as Ashley’s upcoming thriller, which we are looking forward to sharing more news about. The entire evening was a collection of conversations with one author after another.
Here’s a stream-of-consciousness list of who we saw: Elle Cosimano, James O. Born, Robert Dugoni, Lisa Unger, Kaira Rouda, Kimberly Belle, Bonnie Kistler, Joseph Finder and Harry Hunsicker, as well as editors and literary agents, and some others who are breaking into the business in a bigger way. There is never enough time to talk to everyone, but we still did get to see at least a dozen more people from afar. There was such a lovely vibe of energy circulating that room --- and lots of memories of earlier conferences bubbled up!
We hosted our “Bookaccino Live” Summer Preview event on Tuesday evening. I presented 53 books that are either out now or soon to be released this summer that we think you will enjoy reading over the next few months. Included are fiction; historical fiction; thrillers and mysteries; memoirs, biographies and other nonfiction; and one book of poetry.
Click here to watch the presentation and here to see a list of the titles that I talked about. Don’t miss our Fall Preview evening program in September!
This is your last newsletter reminder to sign up for this month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event, which will take place on Tuesday, June 24th at 8pm ET.
Our guest will be Fiona Davis, and she will be talking about her novel, THE STOLEN QUEEN, which is a New York Times bestseller and a Bets On pick. You can sign up by clicking here. Fiona appeared at a previous book group event of ours two years ago, and those who were with us for that program know what a brilliant guest she is.
If you have a question for Fiona, please email it to me using the subject line “Fiona” by Tuesday at noon ET. Be sure to also include your name, city and state, and indicate if you’d like to be on camera during the event so you can ask Fiona the question yourself, or if you’d prefer me to ask it for you. Those who appear on camera will be able to chat with Fiona in our virtual green room before the program starts.
Last Friday, we hosted our 14th Annual Book Group Speed Dating event for booksellers, librarians, book club leaders and bloggers. Representatives from eight publishers presented 35 titles perfect for book groups that are publishing between now and November. I think this is the best group of presentations that we have shared. You can watch the event here --- and if you would like to hear from a specific publisher, we have included timestamps for each of them.
To learn more about the books, click here to access a PDF of the PowerPoint presentation of the featured titles, as well as an Excel spreadsheet that lists the books both by publisher and alphabetically by title, along with a sheet to take notes. MANY thanks to Francesca for her brilliant editing of all the footage, and to Tom for his eagle eye coordinating all of the promotional materials.
We have two new “Bookreporter Talks To” interviews to share with you in this newsletter.
First up is Jeanine Cummins, whose latest novel, SPEAK TO ME OF HOME, is a deeply felt multigenerational family story and a Bets On selection.
Jeanine talks about her inspiration for the book and the significance of home. What does it mean to different people and to different generations? She and I point out that we go through life either as passengers or as those who “control the wheel of the bus.” There is a family tree in the front of the book, which is helpful in following the story --- and Jeanine shows its beautiful design. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast.
I also had the pleasure of talking to the aforementioned Kaira Rouda about her latest thriller, JILL IS NOT HAPPY. Please note: Kaira IS very happily married to her husband, Harley, which is something you need to know as you read this book. Kaira did get the idea for the novel when she and Harley went to Utah during the pandemic. She saw that the landscape there could lend itself to a number of terrifying moments as her characters, Jill and Jack, head off on a weekend road trip together.
Jill wants time with her husband. Jack does not want to go but does so begrudgingly. Once they return home, he will leave Jill; to him, their marriage is a charade. Kaira addresses how she ramped up the tension in this cat-and-mouse game. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast.
Laura Lippman’s latest book, MURDER TAKES A VACATION, features Muriel Blossom, a former private investigator who worked for Tess Monaghan and a middle-aged widow whose vacation on a Parisian river cruise turns into a deadly international mystery...that only she can solve.
Ray Palen has our review and says, “I will not reveal the motive here as I want readers to discover it for themselves. Trust me, it’s a remarkably interesting one.... Lippman keeps the plot moving with additional clues and interactions that will please all mystery lovers. The brief appearances by Tess Monaghan are a great reminder of her finest literary creation, and we are very fortunate to be traveling with Tess’ old friend and former employee.”
FOX, Joyce Carol Oates’ new novel of literary and psychological suspense, revolves around the dark secrets that surface after the shocking disappearance of a charismatic, mercurial teacher at an elite boarding school.
According to Ray Palen in his review, “FOX is so much more than a modern-day LOLITA. Oates layers this extraordinarily complex tale with many surprises that keep the pages turning to the point where the length of the novel seems effortless on her part and impossible to put down. Here is another very satisfying look at the dark side of the human condition by a literary master.”
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:

THE DOORMAN by Chris Pavone is my latest Bets On title. Find out why I’m betting you’ll love it just as much as I did here. I enjoyed talking to Chris about the book last month, so be sure to watch or listen to it if you haven’t already.

News & Pop Culture
Reader Mail:
Susie wrote, “My husband and I both really enjoyed Jess Walter's very entertaining and humorous presentation/talk about his latest, SO FAR GONE, last week at Eagle Harbor Book Co. on Bainbridge Island here in Washington. Jess lives in his hometown of Spokane.” I have not read this one yet, but it is on my oh-so-teetering book pile.
Judy wrote about winning our contest for THE GUEST COTTAGE by Lori Foster: “Woohoo! That’s WONDERFUL news! I recently retired, so now I have more time to read, which makes me very happy. I eagerly await the book’s arrival.”
On Wednesday night, Greg and I had a completely magical evening at Paul Simon’s concert at the Beacon Theatre, which is one of our favorite NYC concert venues. We both wore vintage Simon concert t-shirts; mine was from 1987, the Graceland tour. (I was glad it still fit!) When we saw his “Homeward Bound” concert in the fall of 2018, we really thought that would be the last time we would see him perform live. So many memories bubbled up as I listened, of past shows and how his music has impacted my life since I was 13. Yes, my eyes watered and leaked a few times.
We went the uber-fan route and decided to wait by the stage door as Paul headed to his chauffeured car with his wife, Edie Brickell. It was a special moment for me, and Greg grabbed it on video. There is something wonderful about following a musical artist for most of your life and getting a chance to snag one more evening of hearing him perform. On the drive home, we were musing on whether to head to Vancouver or Seattle to catch one more show. We are still thinking about that one!
Here’s a clip of Paul on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” last night. We saw Colbert outside the show on Wednesday night as well.
I have been listening to and reading Wally Lamb’s THE RIVER IS WAITING. The audio is read by Jeremy Sisto, and it is very powerful. He captures the vulnerability of the main character, Corby Ledbetter. It’s a dark book, but it's so well written that I'm completely absorbed in the story. I am juggling between reading, and listening has been a great way to delve into this book.
Next up is THE UNRAVELING OF JULIA by Lisa Scottoline, which I have been looking forward to reading. It releases on July 15th, and it's set in Tuscany. Lisa jokes that, yes, she headed there to do research because she wanted to make it authentic, not just to visit a wonderfully special place.
The weekend will be about FINALLY getting the back of the house set up for summer. The rainy weekends were a real deterrent to doing that. There will be more planting and more planning. We got new outdoor rugs. We now are working on gazebo decorating. Yes, there will be turquoise drapes on it. We want to add a comfy outdoor couch there. For some reason, most outdoor furniture has a lower back on it, which is not super comfortable. The hunt is on! If you have seen something with a high back, please send me a link.
The plants are grateful for the SUN! The herbs have gotten way too much rain. I have yet to plant seeds, so once again we will be seeing a late start to a cutting garden. I think the seeds would have floated away with all of the rain. Some plants still are in pots here. It’s just been crazy weather.
Today was the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. We contemplated having a dinner party to celebrate, but so much of life got in the way. I hope you enjoyed it!
Read on, and have a great week.

THE DOORMAN by Chris Pavone
THE DOORMAN by Chris Pavone (Thriller)
With THE DOORMAN, Chris Pavone has written both a taut thriller and a brilliant social commentary on present-day New York, similar to what we saw in THE BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES.
Set over just one day, with generous backstory to give deeper meaning to his characters, Chris has portrayed different layers of New Yorkers. The first, as noted in the title, is the doorman, who opens doors, collects packages, and is acknowledged (or not) according to how you see him in his role. The others include the occupants of one of the biggest apartments in the building on one of the higher floors --- one that actually combined two spaces --- and the people who live in a more modest space on a lower floor.

THE SISTERHOOD OF RAVENSBRÜCK: How an Intrepid Band of Frenchwomen Resisted the Nazis in Hitler's All-Female Concentration Camp by Lynne Olson (History)
Audiobook available, read by Lisa Flanagan
Decades after the end of World War II, the name Ravensbrück still evokes horror for those with knowledge of this infamous all-women’s concentration camp, better known since it became the setting of Martha Hall Kelly’s bestselling novel, LILAC GIRLS. Particularly shocking were the medical experiments performed on some of the inmates. Ravensbrück was atypical in other ways as well, not just as the only all-female German concentration camp, but because 80 percent of its inmates were political prisoners, among them a tight-knit group of women who had been active in the French Resistance. Already well-practiced in sabotaging the Nazis in occupied France, these women joined forces to defy their German captors and keep one another alive. Reviewed by Philip Zozzaro.
CHARLES SUMNER: Conscience of a Nation by Zaakir Tameez (Biography)
Charles Sumner is mainly known as the abolitionist statesman who suffered a brutal caning on the Senate floor by the proslavery congressman Preston Brooks in 1856. This violent episode has obscured Sumner’s status as the most passionate champion of equal rights and multiracial democracy of his time. A friend of Alexis de Tocqueville, an ally of Frederick Douglass, and an adviser to Abraham Lincoln, Sumner helped the Union win the Civil War and ordain the Emancipation Proclamation, the Thirteenth Amendment, the Freedmen’s Bureau, and the Civil Rights Act of 1875. In this comprehensive but fast-paced narrative, Zaakir Tameez presents Sumner as one of America’s forgotten founding fathers, a constitutional visionary who helped to rewrite the post–Civil War Constitution and give birth to modern civil rights law. Escaping his violently insane mother is a bonus. Anders finds honor as a proud Union flag twirler --- until he’s captured. Then he tries life as a diehard Confederate --- until fate asks him to die hard for the Confederacy at Gettysburg. Barely alive, Anders limps into a Black Union regiment in a stolen uniform. His new brothers include a science-fiction playwright, a Haitian double agent, and a former slave feuding with God. Word of Mouth Contest: Tell Us What
You've Read --- and You Can Win Two Books!
Tell us about the books you’ve read with your comments and a rating of 1 to 5 stars. During the contest period from June 20th to July 11th at noon ET, three lucky readers each will be randomly chosen to win a copy of DON'T LET HIM IN by Lisa Jewell and THE VIEW FROM LAKE COMO by Adriana Trigiani.
To make sure other readers will be able to find the books you write about, please include the full title and correct author names (your entry must include these to be eligible to win). For rules and guidelines, click here.
