Last weekend's Morristown Festival of Books was a huge success. I was lucky to moderate three panels, and each was special in its own way. It was wonderful to see large audiences of readers at every program. At least two events on Saturday were standing-room only. The entire day warmed my heart, especially observing the long lines at the signing tent. Above you can see me with some of the authors I interviewed, along with my friend, Julia, who also moderated a panel.
Yesterday, Tom and I spent the day online at Library Journal's Day of Dialog. We took pages of notes on winter and early spring books that are coming out. There are so many that we are excited about sharing with you. I also am noodling a new idea. More to come once I get it fully figured out.
Thanks to all of you who answered our Reader Survey. We have been using your responses to help build a presentation for our clients. We love our voracious readers!
I am listening to Stanley Tucci's WHAT I ATE IN ONE YEAR, and I am thoroughly enjoying it. His descriptions of the meals he has eaten make one want to figure out how to create them at home. There are lots of pasta recipes. My husband easily would eat pasta seven days a week, making me wonder which of us is of Italian heritage!
The farmers' market is one of my favorite places this time of year. The fall harvest lends itself to some wonderful culinary experiences that I only have during the fall months. I typically know exactly what I want to buy at each of the stands.
This is your last newsletter reminder to sign up for this month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event, which will take place on Tuesday, October 29th at 8pm ET.
Our guest will be Amanda Peters, and she will be talking about her national bestseller, THE BERRY PICKERS, a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick that releases in paperback on the day of the event.
You can register for the event by clicking here. If you have a question for Amanda, please email it to me using the subject line “Amanda” by Tuesday at noon ET. Be sure to also include your name, city and state, and indicate if you’d like to be on camera during the event so you can ask Amanda the question yourself, or if you’d prefer me to ask it for you. Those who appear on camera will be able to chat with Amanda in our virtual green room before the program starts.
“Reacher had no idea where he was. No idea how he had gotten there. But someone must have brought him. And shackled him. And whoever had done those things was going to rue the day. That was for damn sure.” This is the intriguing setup for Lee Child and Andrew Child’s IN TOO DEEP, the 29th thriller featuring ex-military investigator Jack Reacher.
According to Ray Palen in his review, “IN TOO DEEP reads differently from every other Reacher novel as he literally is in way too deep over his head in a situation where nothing is as it seems. Reacher usually can get out of any scenario with brute strength combined with his military mindset. That takes him part of the way in this one, but he will need guile, luck and help from the few friends he has made to get out in one piece.”
Molly the Maid has a whole new mystery to solve in Nita Prose’s heartwarming novella, THE MISTLETOE MYSTERY, which will be a Bets On selection. When a Secret Santa gift exchange at the Regency Grand Hotel raises questions about who Molly can and cannot trust, she dives headfirst into solving her most consequential --- and personal --- mystery yet.
Kate Ayers has our review and says, “Molly is a naïve young woman making her way in a mean world who feels every emotional hiccup deeply but also soars to great emotional heights. She allows us to understand how totally exhilarating it can be to open one’s heart to love and laughter --- indeed, how essential it can be. THE MISTLETOE MYSTERY will be a warm break in anyone’s day.” Don't miss my Bets On commentary in next week's newsletter. The third full-length installment of the series, THE MAID’S SECRET, will be out next April.
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:
-
REVENGE OF THE TIPPING POINT: Twenty-five years after the publication of his groundbreaking first book, Malcolm Gladwell returns with a brand-new volume that reframes the lessons of THE TIPPING POINT in a startling and revealing light.
-
SONNY BOY: In Al Pacino’s highly anticipated memoir, all the great roles, the essential collaborations and the important relationships are given their full due, as is the vexed marriage between creativity and commerce at the highest levels.
-
AMERICAN HEROES: James Patterson, Matt Eversmann and Tim Malloy team up for an outstanding new collaboration. Bravery and selflessness are literally defined in these riveting first-person tales from our nation’s greatest heroes.
-
BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBT: A master manipulator accused of murder. An attorney sworn to defend her. Keera Duggan returns in this riveting novel of suspense by Robert Dugoni, who introduced his protagonist in last year’s HER DEADLY GAME.
I’m Betting You’ll Love…

I talked to Gilly about the book last December following its hardcover release. So if you missed the discussion or would like to check it out again, you can watch it here or listen to the podcast here.

News & Pop Culture
“Tracker” on CBS and Paramount +: I caught up on the first two episodes of the season last night and enjoyed them.
“Bad Monkey” on Apple TV+: We are up to episode eight. Every episode has at least one "roll my eyes, that was funny" moment in it. Okay, many more!
It still feels like summer here. As I am working, I see people taking walks up and down the street decked out in shorts and T-shirts. The trees are showing off with the most beautiful colors. You can see one of them above. I am not sure if I remember a fall that was this colorfully bright. My morning drives to the health club show a riot of stunning colors as the sun hits them.
Last night, I cut the corn off a dozen ears of corn and froze them to add to cornbread and Mexican dinners this winter. This is my ode to putting up the harvest for the winter --- okay, someone else's harvest, but it counts. We gathered the harvest from the local garden center, Malanga.
Happy Halloween! It is time to buy peanut M&M's in hopes that trick-or-treaters will make their way here. I have tried bribing them to come here with full-sized bars, but instead we have ended up eating lots of candy every year. We buy candy that we like, so if the trick-or-treaters don't show up, then at least we can take care of the leftover treats ourselves.
For those of you who are celebrating Diwali, which also falls on Thursday, enjoy. The lack of rain in the tri-state area has officials asking that people not set off the traditional fireworks.
Go Yankees! May it be a great World Series with a Yankees win. Apologies to our LA readers.
Read on, and have a great week.

REVENGE OF THE TIPPING POINT: Overstories, Superspreaders, and the Rise of Social Engineering by Malcolm Gladwell (Psychology/Social Science)
Audiobook available, read by Malcolm Gladwell
Why is Miami…Miami? What does the heartbreaking fate of the cheetah tell us about the way we raise our children? Why do Ivy League schools care so much about sports? What is the Magic Third, and what does it mean for racial harmony? In REVENGE OF THE TIPPING POINT, Malcolm Gladwell returns for the first time in 25 years to the subject of social epidemics and tipping points, this time with the aim of explaining the dark side of contagious phenomena. WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE? by Sophie Kinsella
and THE SEQUEL by Jean Hanff Korelitz
WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE? by Sophie Kinsella (Fiction)
I have read so many of Sophie Kinsella’s books through the years. They have made me laugh --- and then laugh some more. She had a keen eye on twentysomething women with her character, Rebecca “Becky” Bloomwood.
So what happens when you are an author who has been through a health crisis, and you want to write a book about it? Nonfiction? No, that would be way too dull. It would be full of facts and things that you really do not remember, and honestly interviewing people would not be much fun. Instead you turn to what you know best, which is what Sophie does in her latest novel, WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE? In it, renowned novelist Eve Monroe is facing a devastating diagnosis, and she is learning to live and love anew. Sophie was diagnosed two years ago with glioblastoma, a form of aggressive brain cancer, which at this time has no cure.

THE SEQUEL by Jean Hanff Korelitz (Psychological Thriller)
There are times when you would love for an author to write a sequel, but that often does not happen. So when I saw that Jean Hanff Korelitz had written a sequel to THE PLOT (which also was a Bets On selection when it came out in May 2021), I was looking forward to seeing what came next. If you have not read the first book and are planning to do so, stop right here as there is a plot spoiler ahead.
Anna Williams-Bonner is the widow of Jacob Finch Bonner, who came to one swift demise in THE PLOT. Now, in THE SEQUEL, she has taken on the mantle of literary widow. With persuasion, she has written a book of her own called The Afterword, which sees its own success.

Featured Review: SONNY BOY by Al Pacino
SONNY BOY: A Memoir by Al Pacino (Memoir)
Audiobook available, read by Al Pacino
SONNY BOY is the memoir of a man who has nothing left to fear and nothing left to hide. All the great roles, the essential collaborations and the important relationships are given their full due, as is the vexed marriage between creativity and commerce at the highest levels. The book’s golden thread, however, is the spirit of love and purpose. Love can fail you, and you can be defeated in your ambitions --- the same lights that shine bright can also dim. But Al Pacino was lucky enough to fall deeply in love with a craft before he had the foggiest idea of any of its earthly rewards, and he never fell out of love. That has made all the difference. LIFEFORM by Jenny Slate (Humor/Essays)
Audiobook available; read by Jenny Slate, George Saunders, Vanessa Bayer and Will Forte
Jenny Slate was a human mammal who sniffed the air every morning hoping to find another person to love who would love her, and then we are pleased to report that she did fall in love, but also she was rabid with fear of losing this love because of past injury. And then what happened was that she became a wild-pregnant-mammal-thing, and then she exploded herself by having a whole baby blast through her vagina. Herein lies an account of this journey, told in five phases --- Single, True Love, Pregnancy, Baby and Ongoing --- through luminous, laugh-out-loud funny essays that take the form of letters to a doctor, dreams of a stork, fantasy therapy sessions, gossip between raccoons, excerpts from an imaginary olden timey play, obituaries, theories about post-partum hair loss, graduation speeches and more. SHOCK INDUCTION by Chuck Palahniuk (Fiction/Satire)
Audiobook available, read by Michael David Axtell
The best and brightest students at a seemingly reputable high school are disappearing. Every day it seems another overachiever is lost to an apparent suicide. But something far more sinister is lurking beneath the surface. These kids have been under surveillance since birth, monitored and measured by an online service called “Greener Pastures.” It’s here that billionaires observe and recruit the next generation of talent. The highest test scores, the best grades and the most niche extracurriculars just might land these teenagers an enticing offer at auction. A couple billion dollars in exchange for the remainder of your life and intellectual labor sounds like a pretty fair deal. Doesn’t it? In SHOCK INDUCTION, students must choose between the risk of following their dreams or the security of money and a lifetime of servitude to the world’s wealthiest and most elite. Five days ago, the epidemic of rage began. Four days ago, the rash of senseless murders swept the nation. Three days ago, the president addressed the country and begged for peace --- even as the murders increased tenfold. Two days ago, the killers began to mobilize. One day ago, the power went out. And tonight, the killers are reading the names of those to be killed over the Emergency Broadcast System. Jack Colclough is listening over the battery-powered radio on his kitchen table in Albuquerque, and he just heard his name. People are coming to his house to kill him, his wife, his daughter and his son. He has no idea what’s happening, or why, but the time for questions is long past. His only chance is to run.
