Last Saturday, I went to Manasquan, NJ with Annmarie Puleio for an event with Liane Moriarty, who talked about her new novel, HERE ONE MOMENT. It was lovely to finally meet Liane after reading --- and enjoying --- many of her books. She was interviewed by Ann Napolitano, who asked great questions and kept the conversation going. I asked Liane how she kept all of her characters straight. I assumed she was plotting, but she said she wrote more stream of consciousness. Given the book's wide cast, this was very impressive! It was nice to see so many enthusiastic readers lined up to meet her, especially since the weather was amazing and we were at the beach. You can see me with Liane and Annmarie above.
On Monday, my husband and I headed out to Long Island for Nelson DeMille’s funeral and a reception afterwards. The funeral was beautiful with a wonderful sermon given by a Monsignor who was a close friend of Nelson’s. Years ago, Nelson asked him which book was his favorite. He admitted that he had never read one of Nelson's novels; he only read nonfiction. Nelson was surprised but took it in stride. Fast forward a couple of years, and he and Nelson were leaving an event together. Seemingly out of nowhere, Nelson said to him, “Read THE CATHEDRAL.” That was so Nelson; he always remembered the details.
At the reception, his three children --- Lauren, Alex and James --- each gave a eulogy. One was better than the next; they each did a brilliant job of capturing their dad. I am hoping that those are shared somewhere at some point. Trust that there was not a dry eye in the house when they were being read!
We heard from a number of readers who shared their thoughts on Nelson and his work. Click here to read their comments. We also turned my tribute to Nelson into a blog, so if you missed last week’s newsletter, be sure to take a look at what I said about him here.
On Wednesday, I was in New York City with Tom (Editorial Director Tom as opposed to Husband Tom) for a lunch with three authors from Avid Reader Press and then a cocktail soirée with four authors from Crown Publishing. All the books, which release early next year, sound amazing. Click on the links below for more info on these titles. I am looking forward to finishing my October reading so I can read ahead for 2025!
My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Laura Dave, whose new novel, THE NIGHT WE LOST HIM, we reviewed last week and will be a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick. It also is an instant New York Times bestseller!
At the heart of this story is a secret that has been hidden for years --- one that may have caused the death of Liam Noone, a successful hotel magnate. Nora, his daughter from one of his marriages, is convinced by Sam, his son from another marriage, to join together to see if his death was accidental or something more sinister.
Laura talks about Liam’s unique hotel properties and what inspired them, and how research finds its way into her work. She also shares her writing schedule and how she manages her day, as well as the song she had on repeat as she wrote, which is something she always does.
This is Laura's second thriller. Her first, THE LAST THING HE TOLD ME, was adapted by Laura and her husband into a series for Apple TV+. She talks about future screenwriting projects, as well as the book that readers can look forward to next year. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. And don’t miss my Bets On commentary in next week’s newsletter.
This Month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group Event
On Tuesday night, Shelley Read joined our “Bookaccino Live” Book Group program to talk about her international bestseller, GO AS A RIVER. We had a great discussion about the book, and attendees asked some terrific questions both on and off camera. The event will be up on our YouTube channel and available as a podcast on Monday, and we will share those links with you in next week’s newsletter.
I am so happy to announce that Amanda Peters will be next month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group guest. The event will be held on Tuesday, October 29th at 8pm ET, and you can sign up here for it. We will talk about her national bestseller, THE BERRY PICKERS, which was a Bets On pick when it came out last year and will release in paperback on the day of the event. A four-year-old Mi’kmaq girl goes missing from the blueberry fields of Maine, sparking a mystery that will haunt the survivors, unravel a family, and remain unsolved for nearly 50 years.
There will be a two-part Q&A session after I talk to Amanda. For the first part, those who are asking a question on camera will be featured. This includes spending time with Amanda backstage in our virtual green room before the show starts. If you would like to ask your question "live on screen" this way, please email me with the subject line "Amanda" by noon ET on October 29th. Be sure to include your name, city and state, as well as your question. If you do not want to appear on camera but still would like to ask a question, please note that you want to be off camera, and share your question --- adding your name, city and state.
This week, we kicked off a new contest for THE GRAYS OF TRUTH, Sharon Virts’ third novel, following MASQUE OF HONOR and VEIL OF DOUBT. This gripping tale of murder and deceit is inspired by true events involving one of Baltimore’s most powerful families.
Here’s the premise: In Reconstruction-era Baltimore, members of the city’s elite keep turning up dead. When Jane Gray Wharton’s husband, Ned, dies unexpectedly while staying overnight at his brother’s home, Jane has no reason to question the circumstances of his death. But on a visit to the same house a few weeks later, both Jane and her daughter fall gravely ill, and Jane begins to suspect foul play. Though a trained chemist and former nurse, Jane is haunted by a history of delusion, loss and institutionalization. As the unexpected and devastating deaths begin to multiply, Jane’s grip on reality starts to slip.
In anticipation of the book’s October 29th publication, we’re awarding an advance copy to 25 readers. To enter, please fill out this form by Friday, October 11th at noon ET. We also have added THE GRAYS OF TRUTH to our Fall Reading feature. We will give away five copies of the book the week it releases.
INTERMEZZO is Sally Rooney’s newly released novel about grief, love and family --- but especially love. Two grieving brothers and the people they love experience a new interlude --- a period of desire, despair and possibility; a chance to find out how much one life might hold inside itself without breaking.
Harvey Freedenberg has our review and calls the book “a densely woven, multilayered family drama that’s every bit as psychologically astute as its predecessors while mining a new and deeper vein of human relationships.” He goes on to say, “INTERMEZZO feels as timeless as a classic 19th-century novel and as contemporary as the latest cultural trend. After the publication of only four novels, it would be foolish to suggest that Sally Rooney has already reached some sort of career peak. What the book does signal is that readers can depend on her to produce thoughtful, satisfying fiction for many years to come.”
Four lives are drawn together in Richard Powers’ new novel, PLAYGROUND. Set in the world’s largest ocean, the book explores that last wild place we have yet to colonize in a still-unfolding oceanic game.
Harvey has this to say in his review: “Whether the topic is AI, the plight of our oceans in a warming world, or the challenges facing inhabitants of developing regions who disproportionately shoulder the burdens of global capitalism, PLAYGROUND bears all the evidence of a writer who has reflected deeply on these issues. At the same time, as he considers timeless human dilemmas like ambition, friendship and loyalty, he brings to bear the skills of a mature novelist to present them in the thoughtful way that only the medium of fiction can provide. One couldn’t ask for more from a novel.”
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:
-
THE FOREST OF LOST SOULS: A fearless woman who is raised in the forest fights against a group of powerful men in Dean Koontz’s new novel about good versus evil, the enduring nature of myth and the power of love.
-
A REASON TO SEE YOU AGAIN: Jami Attenberg’s latest novel follows a troubled mother and her two daughters over 40 years and through a swiftly changing American landscape as they seek lives they can fully claim as their own.
-
EDEN UNDONE: Using never-before-published archives, Abbott Kahler has penned an incredible true story of murder, romance and a fateful search for utopia in the Galápagos, set against the backdrop of the Great Depression and the march to World War II.

Reader Mail:
Abby wrote about winning the aforementioned THE NIGHT WE LOST HIM by Laura Dave and HERE ONE MOMENT by Liane Moriarty in a previous Word of Mouth contest: “I am so thrilled with this news! Thank you so much. I can't wait to receive them and to read them!” And she also had nice things to share about the “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event with Shelley Read: “I was on the Zoom event with Shelley Read last night and thought it was great. Such excellent questions, and Shelley was such an interesting person.”
Glennis wrote, “I felt so delighted to join this interview with Shelley Read. It was my first experience, and hopefully I’m able to access the events page and experience others. I missed the titles of the next two books, but I would like to read them as soon as I can. I’m living in Australia, so when the event started, it was 10am here and coffee time! Keep well, and thank you again for your generous sharing with an Aussie.”
Marge wrote, “Thank you so much for sending me THE PUZZLE BOX by Danielle Trussoni as a prize in the last 'Bookaccino Live' contest. I love everything that you do.”
There has not been a lot of television viewing going on. I still am enjoying “Emperor of Ocean Park” on MGM+, and I started watching “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” on Netflix.
I am looking forward to a lot less go, go, go this weekend. The pace has been just a tad too crazy! I was hoping for a weekend of sunshine, but it looks like clouds are going to be the norm. I have three more books to read for my interviews in Morristown, so there will be time for reading, which can happen no matter what the weather is!
For those celebrating Rosh Hashanah next week, Happy New Year!

Bookreporter.com Bets On: BAD LIAR by Tami Hoag
BAD LIAR by Tami Hoag (Mystery/Thriller)
I cannot remember the last Tami Hoag novel that I read. It’s been a while since Tami has had a new book out; she had been dealing with some health issues. But she is back and definitely still has her sharp writing chops. I thoroughly enjoyed BAD LIAR, which is set in Louisiana, and you can feel the humidity coming off the swamp as the book opens. There’s a man’s body at the dead end of a quiet road. His face has been shot off, and his hands have been blasted off, which will make recognizing him tough. And that’s just the start of the day for sheriff’s detective Nick Fourcade.

At the height of the Great Depression, Los Angeles oil mogul George Allan Hancock and his crew of Smithsonian scientists came upon a gruesome scene: two bodies, mummified by the searing heat, on the shore of a remote Galápagos island. For the past four years, Hancock and other American elites had traveled the South Seas to collect specimens for scientific research. On one trip to the Galápagos, Hancock was surprised to discover an equally exotic group of humans: European exiles who had fled political and economic unrest, hoping to create a utopian paradise. One was so devoted to a life of isolation that he’d had his teeth extracted and replaced with a set of steel dentures. Hitler's invasion of Poland launched a momentous period of decision-making for the United States. With fascism rampant abroad, should America take responsibility for its defeat? For Charles Lindbergh, saying no to another world war only 20 years after the first was the obvious answer. Lindbergh had become famous and adored around the world after his historic first flight over the Atlantic. In the years since, he had emerged as a vocal critic of American involvement overseas, rallying Americans against foreign war as the leading spokesman for the America First Committee. While Hitler advanced across Europe and threatened the British Isles, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt struggled to turn the tide of public opinion. Aided by secret British disinformation efforts in America, he readied the country for war. Reviewed by Stuart Shiffman.

"Bookreporter Talks To" Videos & Podcasts
“Bookreporter Talks To” is a video and podcast series that delivers a long-form, in-depth author interview every week. For years, Carol has moderated book festivals and author events around the country. But we know that readers often do not live where they can attend an author event. Our goal is to bring these author interviews to readers, wherever they may be. Watch on video, or listen as a podcast. (The podcasts include audio excerpts.)
