Recently I joined a health club as I love to do water exercises --- everything from water aerobics to lap swimming. When we are in the pool before we start, among the group there often is an exchange of ideas --- everything from what we are reading to what we are making for dinner or where something interesting is going on.
One person in the class told me that she is a big reader. I asked where she gets books, and she proudly told me that she uses pirated sites to get them for free. In fact, she uses three of them. I was completely taken aback by this. Today I overheard her mention it for the third time. I have not said anything as I do not want to make waves in the water (pun intended), but knowing authors --- and publishers --- this form of stealing really rankles me. It’s not like she is downloading books from the library, which also would be free but still would benefit the author.
Being mindful of the work that goes into a book and that it is someone’s livelihood, I feel readers should respect that by buying and borrowing through channels that support the authors and care about them. End of rant!
Speaking of positive sharing, Mary, who is a librarian, wrote this after receiving the video of Wednesday’s “Bookaccino Live” event: “I love the bookmarks! You are making my life easier. I am always recommending you and your wonderful programs. I actually just did five minutes ago. Now I can just hand the person a bookmark. Thank you for all you do!” If you are interested in sharing what we do, you can find our bookmarks here.
Tami Hoag has been absent from the writing scene for years after suffering an injury that had her off the grid for quite some time. Her long-awaited new novel, BAD LIAR, opens with a murder victim being dumped at the end of a deserted road in Louisiana. He was shot in his face and hands, making it difficult to identify him. At the same time, Marc Mercier has disappeared after going on a weekend hunting trip. Also missing is another young man, Robbie Fontenot, a former addict whose mother is desperate to find him. These three cases are being handled by sheriff’s detective Nick Fourcade and his wife, fellow detective Annie Broussard. I am halfway through the book and honestly have no idea how it will end or who the bad liar will be, but I am enjoying how the storytelling is unfolding. It is out September 24th, and I am glad that Tami is writing again!
I am listening to the newly released BLUE SISTERS by Coco Mellors on audio, which is narrated by Kit Griffiths, and I find myself wishing that I had more listening time! On the anniversary of their fourth sister Nicky’s death, three sisters are summoned by their mother to empty the family’s New York City apartment, which brings their very different personalities together. Avery is a recovering heroin addict who is now a lawyer, and she is living in London with her wife. Bonnie used to be a boxer and is now working in a bar in Los Angeles. Lucky, the youngest, models in Paris where she parties even in the middle of the day. I have been introduced to them thus far and look forward to sharing their journey with them. Now I need a few long car rides, or time to pull weeds, which is when I listen most!
Sophie Kinsella is best known for her Shopaholic series, which I loved. At the end of 2022, Sophie (her real name is Madeleine Sophie Wickham) was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a form of aggressive brain cancer with no cure. Her new novel is WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?, which is about an author with five children (Sophie also has five children) who is going through brain cancer and treatment. I have started it, and it truly is a special book, full of honesty as well as hope. It releases on October 8th. You can see her talking about her cancer journey, and the book, here on a “Nightline” segment with Robin Roberts in what is a really inspirational piece.

It was announced this week that TELL ME EVERYTHING is the latest Oprah’s Book Club selection. Here, Elizabeth Strout returns to the town of Crosby, Maine, and to her beloved cast of characters ---- Lucy Barton, Olive Kitteridge, Bob Burgess and more --- as they deal with a shocking crime in their midst, fall in love yet choose to be apart, and grapple with the question, as Lucy puts it, “What does anyone’s life mean?”
Oprah says, “Elizabeth Strout welcomes us home again, back to the small town where we witness the interconnection of all the characters we’ve ever loved in her previous novels. It’s a beautiful read reminding us that there is extraordinary love in ordinary actions.” And she points out, “You don’t need to read Strout’s previous work because everything you’ll need to know is contained within the pages of this marvelous book.”
On Tuesday, Strout appeared on “CBS Mornings” with Oprah to talk about the book. Click here to watch the segment. Also, if you’d like to read along with Oprah’s Book Club, you can do so by following the schedule on this page.
We have our review of TELL ME EVERYTHING this week from Kate Ayers, who says that the book “encompasses several years in the lives of the townspeople of Crosby, but it could be Anywhere, USA. People experience joys and tragedies. They need to get in touch with their feelings, dig deep into their hearts and understand what’s inside themselves, or they risk becoming numb. The characters here enrich themselves by exchanging stories --- by telling everything, as Olive asks Lucy. Readers will return to this novel time and again and always find some new nugget revealed to them. Don’t be the one to miss out.”
If you knew your future, would you try to fight fate? This intriguing question lies at the heart of Liane Moriarty’s latest novel, HERE ONE MOMENT, which will be a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick. Aside from a delay, there will be no problems. The flight will be smooth and will land safely. Everyone who gets on the plane will get off. But almost all of them will be forever changed. Because on this ordinary, short, domestic flight, something extraordinary happens. People learn how and when they are going to die. If you were told you only had a certain amount of time left to live, would you do things differently? Would you try to dodge your destiny?
Our reviewer Eileen Zimmerman Nicol raves about the book in her review: “As a reader of HERE ONE MOMENT, you’ll be wondering how on earth Liane Moriarty can possibly resolve this premise…. But by then you're hooked. I can’t think of an author more adept at quickly (and cleverly) sketching a character, and it’s a good thing because there are so many characters in this novel…. Here’s my prediction for you, dear reader: I expect chuckling. I expect entertainment. I expect tears. Liane Moriarty is a master storyteller, and she has done it again.”
If you saw my comments about the book in last week’s newsletter, you won’t be surprised to hear that I completely agree with Eileen’s assessment. I will talk much more about the book in next week’s newsletter when we feature my Bets On commentary.
In a New York Times article this week, Liane talked about not wanting to talk about HERE ONE MOMENT as she feels uncomfortable talking about herself. Click here to read the piece. I would have liked to interview Liane, but instead I am going to see her next Saturday at an event in Manasquan, NJ, hosted by BookTowne. She will be in conversation with Ann Napolitano.
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:

Gerry wrote, “How exciting to come home today to a gift in my mailbox from Carol and Bookreporter.com! My prize from the most recent 'Bookaccino Live' event was a copy of THE NIGHT WE LOST HIM by Laura Dave. This is a title that was already on my Want to Read shelf, and I look forward to reading it soon. I loved her previous book, THE LAST THING HE TOLD ME. Thanks so much!”
Mary wrote, “I just finished my Bookreporter newsletter and was struck by all that you do: the lengthy newsletter that I really enjoy, floating in the pool reading a whole raft of books, gardening, watching tennis, knitting a baby blanket, cooking peach (and tomato) pies. I am so thankful that you find the time since, selfishly, I love the newsletter. Please keep up the great work!”
Jessica wrote, “Shame on me that I’ve never written to you before, but I just want to say a simple thank you for sharing so many reviews. My to-read list grows way faster than I can read and listen to books, but that’s a problem I’m happy to have. I sincerely appreciate all the work that goes into these newsletters, and reading every edition feels like it was curated especially for me. I am sure that other readers feel the same way. Again, thank you SO much, and happy reading to you too.”
Ingrid, a long-time reader from the Netherlands, wrote, “I completely missed your anniversary, and your weekly newsletter is something I look forward to every single Saturday evening (time difference). So, thank you so much and your wonderful team for supplying me with all the goodies you share --- from books to recipes to film and TV tips, not to forget great laughs!”
Carol wrote about winning CREATION LAKE and THE LIFE IMPOSSIBLE in our Word of Mouth contest: “Great! Thank you very much!”
“The Perfect Couple” on Netflix: This series has been getting a lot of buzz. Note that the ending does not follow the book (Elin Hilderbrand's THE PERFECT COUPLE). To be honest, the ending did not work for me. There is a reason that someone was murdered. But to me, there were enough clues along the way to justify who the killer was! Also, the dance scene at the beginning felt like it was a copy of the dance scene at the end of another Netflix movie about a wedding that I cannot remember the name of.
“Three Women” on STARZ: Premiering today, this series, starring Shailene Woodley, Betty Gilpin, Gabrielle Creevy and Blair Underwood, is adapted from Lisa Taddeo's bestseller, THREE WOMEN.
50th Anniversary of Robert Caro’s THE POWER BROKER: For years, Robert Caro did not want his work to appear in an e-book format. He loved the way the pages laid out. For this milestone anniversary on Monday, he has agreed to an e-version, trying to entice people who may be intimidated by the length of the book. Click here to read his thoughts on this latest format. I clearly remember reading this book when I was in college and having a great discussion about it.
Tomorrow (Saturday), I am going to see the aforementioned Laura Dave, who is doing a special meet and greet signing at Watchung Booksellers in Montclair, NJ, at 1pm. You can purchase a ticket here.
The last week of summer is on the horizon. Let’s make the most of it. I am planning some pool time this weekend to get some reading accomplished, even though I think the pool is now down to 62 degrees.
I hope you have survived Friday the 13th! There will be one more Friday the 13th in December. Consider yourselves warned!
Read on, and have a great week.
