Getting On (and Off) My High Horse
Last Saturday, as planned, I went on a pack horse ride in Beaver Creek, Colorado, with my friend, Heidi. In the photos above, she is the one who looks the part! I swung into the saddle and took stock of the space between the ground and me, and I gulped a bit. Then I was reminded that these horses are trained to follow one another like lemmings on the ride up the mountain.
All was going well until a gap grew between us (the horse and me were now an us) and the horse just ahead. Suddenly my horse dashed ahead like it was the end of the Kentucky Derby. At least that was my interpretation. Heidi said he was trotting. Okay, let’s compromise and say it was fast trotting. All I know is that it took a bit for our ups and downs to get coordinated.
The ride took us a good way up the mountain before we started back down, and the views were stunning. While I enjoyed it and would do it again, I am 100% sure that I never will be an extra on “Yellowstone”!
On Monday, Lisa Wingate met up with me in Golden, Colorado. We plunked ourselves down in a coffee shop in Morrison and spent a couple of hours catching up on books and life while my husband had a business meeting. She was driving a teal-colored Jeep. Seriously, how special is it when an author brings along a car in my color scheme!
As you know, I loved Lisa’s latest book, SHELTERWOOD. And when we had William Kent Krueger on as a “Bookaccino Live” Book Group guest, he gave it a thumbs up as well. As Lisa lives part of the year in Colorado, at some point I hope she noodles a plot set there. That state holds a special place in my heart.
My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with T.J. Newman. Her third thriller, WORST CASE SCENARIO, was our last Summer Reading prize book this week and will be a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick just as her first two books, FALLING and DROWNING, were. When a pilot suffers a heart attack at 35,000 feet, a commercial airliner filled with passengers crashes into a nuclear power plant in the small town of Waketa, Minnesota, which becomes ground zero for a catastrophic national crisis with global implications.
T.J. shares how she came up with the idea for this book and the research that was required (including a detail that I saw to be totally plausible). She discusses her character development and why she feels that Joe Morton is the perfect narrator for the audiobook. We also hear about T.J.’s close relationship with her agent and how they work together. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast.
We have our review of WORST CASE SCENARIO from Ray Palen, who has this to say: “I am so impressed by the extensive research that Newman did to depict the inner workings of a nuclear power plant so effectively…. T.J. Newman has truly elevated WORST CASE SCENARIO to the level of disaster movie peril. Of course I will not outline the resolution here. Just know that it is a real nail-biter that goes far beyond your typical story involving a plane crash.” Don’t miss my Bets On commentary in next week’s newsletter.
We hosted this month’s “Bookaccino Live” book preview event on Wednesday afternoon. I talked about 24 books releasing between now and September 3rd, plus 16 from October, that we wanted to get on your radar. You can watch the presentation here and see a list of the featured titles here.
Next month's “Bookaccino Live” book preview event will take place on Wednesday, September 11th at 2pm ET. The focus will be on titles releasing between September 10th and October 1st, in addition to a few from November, that we think will appeal to you. Click here to sign up. Those attending the live event will be asked to answer a survey about the books from the presentation that they are most interested in reading and will be eligible to win a prize.
Our latest New Release Spotlight title is SPIRIT CROSSING, the 20th entry in William Kent Krueger’s Cork O’Connor mystery series, which releases on Tuesday, August 20th.
As a huge manhunt is launched to find the teenage daughter of a local politician who has gone missing, Cork’s grandson stumbles across the shallow grave of a young Ojibwe woman. As Cork and the tribal officers dig into the circumstances of this mysterious and grim discovery, they uncover a connection to the missing teen --- and it soon becomes clear that Cork’s grandson could be the killer’s next victim.

Announcing This Year’s Fall Reading Feature
Our Fall Preview feature is back for a 14th year but with a slightly different name --- Fall Reading --- and SPIRIT CROSSING will be our first prize book. On select days through early October, we will spotlight a different title and offer a 24-hour contest to win five copies of the book. We also will send a special newsletter to announce each day's title. If you have not done so already, you can sign up here to receive these dedicated newsletters. The contest for SPIRIT CROSSING will be up on Tuesday, August 20th at noon ET.
Word of Mouth Contest Reminder
You also have the opportunity to win SPIRIT CROSSING in our Word of Mouth contest, along with BY ANY OTHER NAME by Jodi Picoult, which releases on Tuesday. Submit your comments about the books you’ve read by Friday, August 23rd at noon ET, and you’ll be in the running to win both titles.
A young nanny who plunged to her death. Or was she pushed? A nine-year-old girl who collects sharp objects and refuses to speak. A lawyer whose job it is to uncover who in the family is a victim and who is a murderer. But how can you find out the truth when everyone here is lying? Be sure to pick up a copy of Sarah Pekkanen’s new thriller, HOUSE OF GLASS, and see if you can figure out what’s going on here.
Pamela Kramer has our review and says, “As Pekkanen deftly orchestrates all the complex passages in this thriller, we don't sit back passively listening to the melody. Rather, we are transfixed at the edge of our seats, wondering what new element will next appear to heighten the emotional impact of the piece. And while we think we know what the finale has in store, Pekkanen brilliantly upends all our suppositions and presumptions. Prepare yourself for a very enjoyable yet twisty experience.”
I am reading HOUSE OF GLASS now and cannot figure out HOW it is going to end. I agree with Pamela on how well-crafted it is!
We also are spotlighting reviews of these two books:
-
ANGEL OF VENGEANCE: Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child continue their series featuring FBI Special Agent Pendergast and Constance Greene. This time, they take a final stand against New York’s deadliest serial killer: Pendergast’s own ancestor...and Constance’s greatest enemy.
-
ARKANGEL: Currently in development as a TV series from Amazon MGM Studios, James Rollins’ latest Sigma Force novel is the story of a thrilling hunt around the globe, pitting nation against nation, as ancient myths of a lost continent prove all too real.
I’m Betting You’ll Love…
My two latest Bets On picks are WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? by Shari Lapena and BOSS LADY by Alli Frank and Asha Youmans, both of which we’ve recently reviewed. Click on each of the titles for my Bets On commentary.

Reader Mail: Julye wrote about being one of our Summer Reading contest winners: “I have just received the copy of THE DAYS I LOVED YOU MOST in the mail. I was so excited to learn that I was a very lucky winner! I first heard about Bookreporter from Carol after sitting with her many years ago on a flight to Tucson for the Tucson Festival of Books. I have enjoyed perusing the website often, reading the reviews and adding to my forever long list of TBRs. I can’t wait to get started reading the story of Joseph and Evelyn. Thank you, Carol, and the publisher for this opportunity.” Julye, wow, that brought up a lovely memory from that flight in 2019. Thank you for that...and for being an ongoing reader.
30+ TV Shows Based on Books This Year: I have watched 14 of the shows that are mentioned in this Deadline piece, and I have dipped into an episode or two of four more.
Since we were traveling, I have done very little television or streaming viewing. I watched a documentary about Charlie Trotter, the Chicago restaurateur, on Netflix the other night. But beyond that, it’s been all about reading time.
A quiet weekend is ahead, and I hope for time to stand in the pool or float to get some more reading done. Colorado was so busy socially that I only made my way through two-and-a-half of the six books that I brought with me. But it was such fun to catch up with our friends! There was an amusing moment when Tom was playing golf with one friend, and he mentioned our younger son. She somehow had missed that he had been born. He is 29! Tom and I both vowed to get out west more.
Read on, and have a great week.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? by Shari Lapena
and BOSS LADY by Alli Frank and Asha Youmans
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? by Shari Lapena (Domestic Thriller)
I am not sure how she does it, but all of Shari Lapena’s books are absolute page-turners. This time I tried to slow myself down to see if I could analyze her method, but once again her propulsive storytelling did not allow this.
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE? opens in Fairhill, Vermont, where everything is beautiful and bucolic. One morning, a local farmer finds in his field the body of a young woman that is being feasted upon by vultures. For the record, the description of the vultures was enough to get the hair on my arms standing up. Soon the victim is identified as Diana Brewer, a local high school senior, and the chatter starts up about how she got there and who wanted her killed.

BOSS LADY by Alli Frank and Asha Youmans (Fiction)
A few years ago, I met Alli Frank and Asha Youmans at a library event, and I immediately became a fan of their work. BOSS LADY, their fourth book, does not disappoint. Their stories are true to life but also laced with lots of humor.
Antonia "Toni" Arroyo is Black and Puerto Rican. She is working at the San Francisco Airport where she assists passengers getting to and from their gates. Among her regulars is Sylvia Eisenberg, a widow who travels between San Francisco and Arizona. Sylvia enjoys hearing all about Toni’s plans --- and is continually cheering her on.
