I was happy that Francesca Smith, our Contest Coordinator and social media wizard, joined me, along with my longtime friend, Beverley Wilson, and Annmarie Puleio, both of whom frequently accompany me to book events. Though we all had dewy glows from the brutal humidity as we spoke with the authors following the program, we were smiling as we had a really wonderful time.
Then last night, Annmarie and I headed south to the Brielle Public Library to see Chris Whitaker discuss ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK, which is a Bets On pick. He was in conversation with Amy Jo Burns, the author of MERCURY, who asked terrific questions.
It was such fun to finally meet Chris as I had interviewed him three times for WE BEGIN AT THE END, but this was the first time that we met in person. He is here in the States for another week. I've set up an interview with him for mid-August once his travel ends. I am looking forward to that.
I also was happy to meet Michelle, one of our readers, who was at Chris' program. You can see her with me above. I am so glad she said hi! And others in the audience were talking to me about “Bookaccino Live”.
My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Beatriz Williams, whose new novel, HUSBANDS & LOVERS, is a Bets On selection. Here, for the first time, Beatriz sets one of her story threads in the present day, while the other takes place in 1950s Cairo. She loves reading about history and actually began developing the older storyline before moving over to the later one.
Readers of THE SUMMER WIVES will note at least one character who finds his place in HUSBANDS & LOVERS. I ask about Beatriz’s inspiration for Monk, the rock star in the book, as well as the iconic bracelet that finds its way through generations. And she talks about what’s next for her. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast.
Taffy Brodesser-Akner follows up her much-talked-about debut, FLEISHMAN IS IN TROUBLE, with LONG ISLAND COMPROMISE. This exhilarating second novel spans the entirety of one family’s history, winding through decades and generations, all the way to the outrageous present, and confronting the mainstays of American Jewish life.
Norah Piehl has this to say in her review: “Although LONG ISLAND COMPROMISE can be very funny, it’s also a rich reflection on the changing identities of American Jews over the past half-century and a well-crafted dramatization of the idea of inherited trauma. Furthermore, it’s a portrait of a specific kind of place, a Long Island community that has the distinction of being one of the first areas in the United States to have a Jewish majority.” I love the way Taffy tells a story. I feel like I am there!
Kate Quinn, the New York Times bestselling author of THE DIAMOND EYE and THE ROSE CODE, returns with THE BRIAR CLUB, a haunting and powerful story of female friendships and secrets in a Washington, D.C., boardinghouse during the McCarthy era. When a shocking act of violence tears Briarwood House apart, the Briar Club women must decide once and for all: Who is the true enemy in their midst?
According to Sam Johnson in his review, “Readers who love the ‘history’ portion of the historical fiction genre will appreciate the sociopolitical roles the characters play…. Fans of character-driven stories also will be satisfied with the characters and arcs that Quinn has crafted. While they seem to fit historical roles, she still develops them thoughtfully, ensuring that her book is about people and not types of people discussed in history textbooks.”
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:
-
JFK JR.: RoseMarie Terenzio and Liz McNeil have produced the first oral biography of John F. Kennedy Jr. 25 years after his tragic death. Sharing never-before-told stories and insights, his closest friends, confidantes, lovers, classmates, teachers and colleagues paint a vivid portrait of one of the most beloved figures of the 20th century. I sat next to RoseMarie at a publisher lunch and loved hearing how she pulled these pieces together. She had worked as John's assistant for years, so she had a front row seat to his world. I look forward to reading it.
-
THE BLACK BIRD ORACLE: Diana Bishop journeys to the darkest places within herself --- and her family history --- in this highly anticipated fifth installment in the All Souls series. Deborah Harkness deepens the world of All Souls with powerful new magic and long-hidden secrets, and the path Diana finds at Ravenswood leads to the most consequential moments yet in the series.
-
THE BRIGHT SWORD: Lev Grossman, the bestselling author of the Magicians trilogy, returns with a triumphant reimagining of the King Arthur legend for the new millennium. Steeped in tradition, full of duels and quests, battles and tournaments, magic swords and Fisher Kings, the book also sheds a fresh light on Arthur’s Britain, a diverse, complex nation struggling to come to terms with its bloody history.
I’m Betting You’ll Love…

News & Pop Culture
Reader Mail:
John wrote about winning BAD TOURISTS in our Summer Reading contest: “Thank you. I very much look forward to reading and reviewing it.”
Terry wrote this about SHELTERWOOD by Lisa Wingate: “This book 'I'm telling ya' (to quote you!) is something very special. Thank you for singing its praises. It just bumped THE WOMEN down to #2 on my 'Best Books of 2024' list. Despite being into Daniel Silva's latest, A DEATH IN CORNWALL, it's SHELTERWOOD that I can't stop thinking about. I seem to recall you saying you read it in a weekend. I understand why. The characters, both despicable and lovable, made me weep and cringe in horror. Lisa's description of the geography made me want to go to Oklahoma. And the story reveals yet another dark chapter in American history. Thank you for the recommendation.”
Bliss wrote about winning a copy of MEET ME AT THE STARLIGHT in our Summer Reading contest: “How exciting! Thank you so much.”
“Presumed Innocent” on Apple TV+: I confess that the finale did not work for me. There is such a thing as a thriller bringing you an ending that you did not expect, but when there are too few red herrings placed, you feel too out of the game. I read that there will be a second season of the show with a new case.
Fallon Book Club Summer Pick: As mentioned earlier, THE GOD OF THE WOODS was named this summer's Fallon Book Club pick. Click here to watch Jimmy Fallon make the announcement on “The Tonight Show.”

The Olympics, which NBC has been name-dropping into every news, weather and sports report for weeks now, kick off tonight. I kid you not, if there was a drinking game going on between the local and national news where you would take a shot each time you heard Paris, Olympics or Olympic athlete, you would be tipsy by 7:30. At that time, “Access Hollywood” would mention the same in case you still were sober. Very amusing that this did not slip by me. And how hard was it raining at the opening ceremony in Paris?
The air promises to be drier this weekend, so I am looking forward to being outdoors without wilting! Plans still are up in the air, but reading is on my agenda. Two author interviews are scheduled for next week: Dawn Tripp about JACKIE, which I loved and will be a Bets On selection, and T.J. Newman about WORST CASE SCENARIO, which I am reading now and loving.
I interviewed Amy Neff today about the aforementioned THE DAYS I LOVED YOU MOST. I am heading back to the Brielle Public Library to see her on Tuesday night. I marvel at how she writes so brilliantly about a long marriage given her young age. If you will be at this event, please be sure to say hi!
We picked up 14 pounds of Georgia peaches last Saturday, and they finally have ripened on the counter. Beverley brought me four containers of freshly picked blackberries, so the ideas for baking are swirling here. If you have a suggestion for me, send it on! Friends are coming tomorrow night for pool time and dinner...and I am working on a menu.
Read on, and have a great week.

JFK JR.: An Intimate Oral Biography by RoseMarie Terenzio and Liz McNeil (Biography)
Audiobook available, read by a full cast with RoseMarie Terenzio
The first oral biography of John F. Kennedy Jr. is an extraordinarily intimate, comprehensive look at the real man behind the myth. Sharing never-before-told stories and insights, his closest friends, confidantes, lovers, classmates, teachers and colleagues paint a vivid portrait of one of the most beloved figures of the 20th century, revealing how the boy who saluted became the man America came to know and love who still captures public imagination 25 years after his tragic death. THE GOD OF THE WOODS by Liz Moore,
THE CLIFFS by J. Courtney Sullivan,
THE LION WOMEN OF TEHRAN by Marjan Kamali,
and BAD TOURISTS by Caro Carver
THE GOD OF THE WOODS by Liz Moore (Literary Thriller/Mystery)
I enjoyed Liz Moore's previous novel, LONG BRIGHT RIVER, so I was eager to read THE GOD OF THE WOODS. She does not disappoint. I never attended summer camp, but friends of mine have loved this experience. And in these pages, I felt like I was there. Here we have an interesting setup. It's 1975. Next to Camp Emerson is a property in the Adirondacks owned by the wealthy Van Laars, which has been in the family for generations. They own the land where the camp is located, and it is now managed by the daughter of the camp's founder.

THE CLIFFS by J. Courtney Sullivan (Fiction)
I enjoy J. Courtney Sullivan's writing, so I was looking forward to reading THE CLIFFS. Here, she returns to Maine in a book that is full of character, history and stories woven together. First, there is an abandoned house, one that Jane Flanagan, a teen with a less-than-happy home life, explores in her free time. Her imagination is in gear about who may have lived there and what their story was. Things seem hurriedly abandoned as if a family fled. There are clothes in closets and dishes in cabinets. But life moves on. And so does Jane.

THE LION WOMEN OF TEHRAN by Marjan Kamali (Fiction)
A few years ago, I read and loved Marjan Kamali’s THE STATIONERY SHOP, which was so beautifully done. I am happy to share that her latest book, THE LION WOMEN OF TEHRAN, is just as special. While readers will see it as a touching story of a friendship, it is much more as Marjan gives us an inside view of the political situation that erupts again and again in Tehran, Iran.

BAD TOURISTS by Caro Carver (Psychological Thriller)
Caro Carver’s BAD TOURISTS sets up as one kind of book but quickly flips to another. Then comes even more twists. Caro was inspired to write this thriller as she was on vacation in the Maldives. She envisioned a hotel, like Sapphire Island, a plush location where guests would have everything taken care of for them. This spectacular setting is a star and a character since the setup of these accommodations lends itself to the action. And the beautiful waters around them hide danger.
