Earthquake, Mercury Retrograde and an Eclipse...Oh My!
Well, we are lucky that those of us in the New York area did not float away in the rain this week. Then this morning, for added excitement we felt the earthquake in New Jersey that rocked from New York City to Philadelphia. Mercury went retrograde on Monday and will be there until April 24th. (Longtime readers of the site know what this means; newcomers can read all about it here.)
Monday will be the solar eclipse, which I thought happened about five years ago and was not supposed to happen again in my lifetime. But it is, and there still are eclipse viewing glasses in the armrest of one of our cars. I guess we were going to be prepared if it ever happened again!
Nothing slows us down here at Bookreporter. This week, I interviewed two authors with books coming out next week, both of which will be Bookreporter.com Bets On selections: Megan Miranda (her new psychological thriller, DAUGHTER OF MINE) and Simone Gorrindo (her memoir, THE WIVES). I wanted to catch Megan and Simone before they headed out on tour.
There is lots more to share, so let's get to it!
This is your last Weekly Update newsletter reminder to sign up for this month’s “Bookaccino Live” book preview event, which will take place on Wednesday, April 10th at 2pm ET.
The focus will be on titles releasing between April 9th and April 30th --- in addition to a few from the second half of May, plus June --- that we would like to tell you about. Click here to register. Those attending the live event will be asked to answer a survey about the books from the presentation that they are most interested in reading and will be eligible to win a prize.
Amor Towles shares some of his shorter fiction in the newly released TABLE FOR TWO, which contains six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The latter features Evelyn Ross, one of Towles’ most beloved characters from his debut novel, RULES OF CIVILITY. Click here to read more about these richly detailed and sharply drawn pieces, and be sure to take a peek inside the book here. I am listening to it on audio and am enjoying it. Edoardo Ballerini and J. Smith-Cameron are the narrators, and they are terrific.
The release of TABLE FOR TWO is timed perfectly with the airing of “A Gentleman in Moscow”, which is based on Towles’ 2016 book of the same name. This eight-episode limited series debuted last week on Paramount+ and Paramount+ with Showtime. My husband and I watched the first episode, and we enjoyed it. It set up the story really well.
Word of Mouth Contest Reminder
TABLE FOR TWO is one of the prizes in our Word of Mouth contest; the other is the aforementioned THE WIVES by Simone Gorrindo. Submit your comments about the books you’ve read, and you’ll have a chance to win both these titles. Please do so by Friday, April 12th at noon ET.
Following CITY ON FIRE and CITY OF DREAMS, CITY IN RUINS is not only the conclusion to Don Winslow’s epic crime trilogy starring Danny Ryan, it’s also the final book of Winslow’s extraordinary career.
Ray Palen has our review and says, “The action is ceaseless, and the build-up to the fiery finale is like a ride on a roulette wheel spinning out of control. Like any other story involving the mob, crime syndicates and unrelenting greed, the chances of all the key players in this tale rolling snake eyes is more than a reality. CITY IN RUINS provides an explosive and very satisfying end to a bloody, intense trilogy about crime and the complex characters who drive the story and fan the flames of hate and violence right up until the bitter end. We can only hope that Don Winslow rethinks his retirement.”
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:
-
THE SICILIAN INHERITANCE: This transporting novel is rooted in Jo Piazza’s own family history about a long-awaited trip to Sicily, a disputed inheritance and a family secret that some will kill to protect.
-
SHARPE'S COMMAND: Bernard Cornwell returns to the early years of the 19th century, capturing the bravery, battles and bloodshed of Britain’s peninsular wars with this epic tale featuring his iconic hero, Richard Sharpe.
-
MATTERHORN: In this alpine thriller from Christopher Reich, a sudden family death and an old nemesis bring retired agent Mac Dekker in from the cold. But in a field of double agents, who can he trust?
You have until Friday, April 12th at noon ET to enter our contest for THE LAST MURDER AT THE END OF THE WORLD by Stuart Turton and be one of our 25 winners who will receive an advance copy of the book, which releases on May 21st. According to C. J. Tudor, “Stu Turton is the master of intricately plotted, brilliantly imaginative murder mysteries. His latest delivers all that wonderful head-scratching complexity in a darkly drawn future world with a message about what makes us human at its heart. I loved it.”
Spring Preview Contest Update
In this week’s 24-hour Spring Preview contest, we gave away the aforementioned DAUGHTER OF MINE by Megan Miranda. Next week’s prize book will be Leigh Bardugo’s new fantasy for adults, THE FAMILIAR. The contest will be up at noon ET on the day of its release, Tuesday, April 9th.

April’s “Good Morning America” Book Club pick is Abby Jimenez’s new romantic comedy, JUST FOR THE SUMMER, which the publisher describes as “a sharp and scintillating summer novel that will make readers laugh out loud and cry happy tears.” We look forward to sharing our review later this month.
This month’s “Read with Jenna” Today Show Book Club pick is THE HUSBANDS by debut novelist Holly Gramazio, which Jenna calls “equal parts humor and love story.” She goes on to say, “I love the concept. I think it's a commentary on swiping and dating in the modern world.”
Leif Enger’s new novel, I CHEERFULLY REFUSE, is April’s Barnes & Noble Book Club pick. In this tale set in a not-too-distant America, a bereaved and pursued musician embarks under sail in search of his dearly departed bookselling wife. THE MOST FUN WE EVER HAD, Claire Lombardo’s 2019 debut novel, is this month’s Reese’s Book Club pick. Reese describes the book using these words: Sisters. Emotional. Messy (in the best way). Complicated relationships. Character-driven. She says, “This book truly feels like you’re a fly on the wall watching a real family interact.” Click here to read our review. Claire’s new book, SAME AS IT EVER WAS, releases on June 18th.

Janie wrote, “Carol, I finally learned how to use my earphones and was rewarded with your podcast with Anna Quindlen about her new book. What a delight she is! I read the newsletter every Saturday morning and take notes. I volunteer at the library here in Sun City and give input for purchases. Happy Anniversary! We are celebrating 65 years in November (which should help explain why I am so late to the podcast world). Thanks for all that you bring to my reading life.”
Abby wrote, “I finished AFTER ANNIE early this morning. I haven't seen your interview with Anna yet, but I plan to watch. I very much enjoyed the book, especially the fact that the story was told from the viewpoint of various characters, including the grieving husband. So often these types of books only provide us with a woman's viewpoint. I thought the book was truthfully told and another wonderful tale by Anna Quindlen.” So very well said! If you missed my interview with Anna, check out the video here or the podcast here.
“We Were the Lucky Ones” on Hulu: This series is based on Georgia Hunter’s novel of the same name, which I have not read, but it is on a shelf here. We have watched the first four episodes, and they are so well done. What a story!
“Palm Royale” on Apple TV+: Based on the novel MR. AND MRS. AMERICAN PIE by Juliet McDaniel, this series is pretty vacuous. But these days, something not so heavy can be fun! I do feel that I should be wearing a shift dress from Lilly Pulitzer as I watch it.
We are headed to Princeton University tonight for the Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival, which is part of the traveling World Tour. We missed it last year as I was out of town, so we are really looking forward to enjoying it tonight with our friends, Al and Paula. We also have tickets for tomorrow. Of course, when I bought these tickets, I completely forgot that this would be Final Four weekend.
On Monday night, Tom and Lisa from our team will join me for a special evening with Simon & Schuster authors to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the company. If you would like to attend this event virtually, tickets are available to purchase here.
On Tuesday night, there will be another Simon & Schuster 100th anniversary celebration party where I hope to see more authors and publishing friends. Hmmm...now I have celebrated 100 years of Knopf and 100 years of W. W. Norton & Company. These are amazing publishing histories to look back on.
If you are in the viewing area of the eclipse, I hope that you have a brilliant sighting. Remember your protective eyewear!
Read on, and have a great week.

Now Available: TABLE FOR TWO by Amor Towles
TABLE FOR TWO: Fictions by Amor Towles (Fiction/Short Stories)
Audiobook available, read by Edoardo Ballerini and J. Smith-Cameron
In TABLE FOR TWO, Amor Towles shares some of his shorter fiction: six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages. In Towles’ novel, RULES OF CIVILITY, the indomitable Evelyn Ross leaves New York City in September 1938 with the intention of returning home to Indiana. But as her train pulls into Chicago, where her parents are waiting, she instead extends her ticket to Los Angeles. Told from seven points of view, “Eve in Hollywood” describes how Eve crafts a new future for herself --- and others --- in a noirish tale that takes us through the movie sets, bungalows and dive bars of Los Angeles.

THE LAST MURDER AT THE END OF THE WORLD by Stuart Turton (Literary Mystery)
Solve the murder to save what's left of the world.
Outside the island, there is nothing. The world was destroyed by a fog that swept the planet, killing anyone it touched.
On the island, it is idyllic. One hundred and twenty-two villagers and three scientists are living in peaceful harmony. The villagers are content to fish, farm and feast, to obey their nightly curfew, to do what they're told by the scientists.
Until, to the horror of the islanders, one of their beloved scientists is found brutally stabbed to death. And then they learn that the murder has triggered a lowering of the security system around the island, the only thing that was keeping the fog at bay. If the murder isn't solved within 107 hours, the fog will smother the island --- and everyone on it.
But the security system also has wiped everyone's memories of exactly what happened the night before, which means that someone on the island is a murderer --- and they don't even know it.
And the clock is ticking.
