For the first time in decades, we are not going to be hosting Easter at our house. Our anniversary (our 39th of marriage and 42nd since we met on a ski slope in Crested Butte, Colorado) is on Saturday, and somehow the idea of going out to dinner to celebrate sounded like a lot more fun than shopping/cooking/cleaning to host dinner. There were a few times when I felt like maybe we should just do it, but luckily I caught myself. Easter always is a tough holiday; unlike Thanksgiving and Christmas, there is not an extra day to clean up and get life back to some semblance of normalcy.
Making a dinner reservation for the group was a bit challenging as we did not want to do brunch, and we did not need the Easter Bunny to be part of our celebration. I do have very cute bunny plates, and they will make an appearance sometime in the next week or so.
Last weekend, I finished DID I EVER TELL YOU? by Genevieve Kingston. It was beautiful, heartbreaking, moving and special. It’s the kind of book that I need someone to read so I can talk about it with them, as I do not want to give anything in it away. I found myself talking to my dad about it on the phone the other night, knowing that it was not a book he would read. But we ended up having a great conversation about the themes in it, about love and loss, and keeping a loved one's memory alive, regardless of his not having read it. Book club selection, yes. Book to make you think, yes. Bookreporter.com Bets On selection, yes. It is out on April 16th and is one of our Spring Preview featured titles.
My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Anna Quindlen, whose new novel, AFTER ANNIE, is March’s Barnes & Noble Book Club pick.
The idea for the opening of the book came to Anna in a moment, which she explains. She thought for a while about just writing from the point of view of Ali, Annie’s 13-year-old daughter, but she changed her mind as she realized that she could not see the complete purview of a person that age. Instead, she layered in Annie’s husband, Bill, and her best friend, Annemarie, to give readers a fuller picture of the impact of Annie’s life even after her death.
Annie, and what she thinks, is alive on every page. Surprisingly, AFTER ANNIE was not always the title, and the cover was not an immediate choice either. Anna also talks about what she does every day when she ends a writing session. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast.
This week, we kicked off a new contest for THE LAST MURDER AT THE END OF THE WORLD, Stuart Turton’s third novel, following THE 7½ DEATHS OF EVELYN HARDCASTLE and THE DEVIL AND THE DARK WATER. This explosively imaginative speculative thriller is about an impossible murder that triggers a world-ending phenomenon that can only be stopped by the identification of the killer.
A.J. Finn calls the book “[a] mind-bending, genre-blending, boy-that-ending mystery unlike any I've ever read...as though Agatha Christie and Stephen King had jointly rebooted ‘Lost.’” And according to Benjamin Stevenson, “Stuart Turton’s literary pyrotechnics are on full display in this magnificently sly novel. Part Holmesian deduction, part Shyamalan level twists --- Turton somehow manages to reinvent both himself and the mystery genre with every book. An absolute blast.”
In anticipation of the book’s May 21st release, we’re awarding an advance copy to 25 readers. To enter, please fill out this form by Friday, April 12th at noon ET.
#1 bestselling author Lisa Scottoline is back with a new domestic thriller, THE TRUTH ABOUT THE DEVLINS, which revolves around family, justice and the lies that tear us apart.
Here’s the premise: TJ Devlin is the charming disappointment in the prominent Devlin family, all of whom are lawyers at their highly successful firm --- except him. After a stint in prison and rehab for alcoholism, TJ can’t get hired anywhere except at the firm as an investigator. But one night, TJ’s world turns upside down after his older brother, John, confesses that he murdered one of their clients, an accountant he’d confronted with proof of embezzlement. TJ plunges into the investigation, but it isn’t long before he and John find themselves entangled in a lethal web of deception and murder.
Jana Siciliano has our review and says, “TJ is a rare character for a thriller --- someone who is so flawed yet so irresistible due to his charms and his desire to live a respectable life and do a good deed in order to achieve that kind of life. THE TRUTH ABOUT THE DEVLINS is a romp with exacting amounts of soul and sabotage, surprise and success, that even the most jaded mystery reader will find it to be a jolt to his or her system.”
Lisa has been on the road the last few days --- with stops in Pennsylvania, Florida, Arizona, Texas and New Jersey --- to talk about the book. Her tour continues through mid-April (with of couple of virtual events sprinkled in), so be sure to check out her schedule here to see if she’ll be at a bookstore or library near you.
A mysterious high-stakes game proves life-threatening in Heather Gudenkauf’s latest twisty thriller, EVERYONE IS WATCHING. Five contestants have been chosen to compete for $10 million on a game show that will be live-streamed for all the world to see. But they have no idea what to expect when they arrive at the secluded estate where the competition will take place. When long-kept secrets begin to rise to the surface, the contestants realize that someone is out for blood.
According to our reviewer Ray Palen, “Heather Gudenkauf has long been one of the most solid writers of psychological thrillers in the business. Nothing, however, will prepare readers for her latest effort, which is unlike anything she has written previously…. I absolutely loved this novel and had so much fun reading it. EVERYONE IS WATCHING made me think of Agatha Christie’s AND THEN THERE WERE NONE, which saw apparently random strangers invited to a private island at the behest of a host who had a sick sense of justice.”
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:
-
HOW TO SOLVE YOUR OWN MURDER: Kristen Perrin’s adult debut, which is March's Top LibraryReads Pick, is about a woman who spends her entire life trying to prevent her foretold murder only to be proven right 60 years later, when she is found dead in her sprawling country estate. Now it's up to her great-niece to catch the killer.
-
WHAT HAPPENED TO NINA?: An upcoming Bets On selection, Dervla McTiernan’s new book is an emotional novel of suspense about two families pitted against each other --- one seeking justice in the disappearance of their daughter, the other desperate to clear their son’s name. Don’t miss my Bets On commentary in next week’s newsletter.
-
THE ANGEL OF INDIAN LAKE: This final installment in Stephen Graham Jones’ Indian Lake trilogy picks up four years after DON'T FEAR THE REAPER as Jade Daniels returns to Proofrock, Idaho, to build a life after the years of sacrifice --- only to find that the Lake Witch is waiting for her.

Maureen wrote, “Carol, I loved the scarf that you wore on “Bookaccino Live”. Did you knit that? The color and the style were perfect.” Thanks for noticing, Maureen. Yes, I did knit it. I wish I could recall the yarn and the pattern. I remember that it was a lot of fun to knit!
Cheri wrote, “I recently landed my dream job! Not bad for 71 years old. I am now a bookseller at our local independent bookstore, Theodore's Books, in Oyster Bay, NY. I have the privilege of moderating the Teddy's Rough Readers Book Club once a month and lead Teddy's Storytime on Thursdays. As a loyal follower of Bookreporter.com and ReadingGroupGuides.com, my Saturday mornings wouldn't be complete without a cup or two of coffee while reading the newsletters.
“I can't always join the 'Bookaccino Live' or 'Bookreporter Talks To' events, but I watch them when they become available on YouTube. I can't thank you enough for these events. They have become vital to me in choosing the books that the book club reads and also my personal book club. Your insights and reviews of these books are great. I love that you found your dream job, Cheri, and I am going to encourage our readers in your area to stop in and talk books with you!
Terry wrote, “I'm still talking about your discussion with Kristin Hannah and THE WOMEN. I finished it after that evening and then went in search of the playlist she mentioned. It's fabulous! Enjoy...” For readers looking for the playlist, the one that Kristin’s publisher created is here. That is just one of the many extra assets that you can find on Kristin’s website.
“STEVE! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces” on Apple TV+: This documentary will be streaming beginning today. I look forward to watching it. Each part is about an hour and a half, for those of you who want to gauge your watching time!
“In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon” on MGM+: I honestly think that this documentary would have been stronger in at least three parts. The editor --- and uber Paul Simon fan --- in me thinks that there were whole sections of his career somewhat glossed over seemingly in an attempt to tell a much deeper story about the creative process. I feel like the director was swept up a bit in something precious but not detailed enough about some pivotal moments in his career.
What Happened to the Swans?: For those of you who are wondering what happened to “the Swans” that Truman Capote refers to in the FX/Hulu series, “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”, here you go.
Here are two shows that are on my list to watch: “We Were the Lucky Ones” on Hulu and “Palm Royale” on Apple TV+.
I will confess to watching season two of “Buying Beverly Hills” on Netflix. I love seeing the insanely priced real estate. I am not sure which of the homes --- the triplex in Miami (The Agency also has an office in that city) or any of the oversized homes in the Hills --- was the most over the top. I got a kick out of hearing about the various wood and marble finishes, and then, of course, there were the floating staircases, the infinity pools and even at least one round elevator. They also went to Aspen, and everyone wore cowboy hats (of course), one of which cost $1,200. Oh, and the head of The Agency and his wife are separating, and it ends up that she is on one of the “Housewives” shows, which I never have watched; my reality show viewing stops at real estate. I share this television offering just so you know I can hit pretty low-brow for an escape.
Laurent de Brunhoff: I am not sure if you know his name, but I bet you know the books he worked on --- the Babar series. He passed away this week at the age of 98. He was the son of Babar’s creator, Jean de Brunhoff, and originated dozens of Babar books over 60 years. His father created the first book in 1931 when Laurent was just six years old.
Ilia Malinin: This is a name to know. You are going to be hearing about him if you have any love of ice skating. Below are links to two amazing performances of his. I cannot name or explain ANY of the moves on the ice, but he nails one that no one has done before. I need to see it in slow motion. Enjoy here and here.
A nearby library has a great idea for a fundraiser that is sure to bring in readers. Here it is: “Join us at the Oakflower Brewing Co. in Millington for a Silent Book Club! Read your book with others and sip your beer. Afterwards, enjoy some nice conversation with your fellow library supporters! A portion of the evening's proceeds from the evening’s sales will be donated to the Long Hill Township Library.” My book group thinks this sounds like a perfect idea --- books, beer and bookish conversation.
This is the time of year when I REALLY am sorry that my sons are out of school and not headed to spring break. That always got me motivated to stop for a week. Right now, I have a teetering pile of books that I am longing to read, and I do not have enough time to kick back and enjoy them!
Instead, tonight we are headed out for our weekly pizza fix. On Saturday, we are out for our anniversary dinner. Then on Sunday, we are out for our Easter dinner, which means by next week I would not want to be wearing a bathing suit, so it is a good thing we are not going on spring break. But the books…I long to just sit and read books.
Oh, and it looks like March is leaving like a lion here with some big winds. It started like a lamb.
Happy Easter to all who are celebrating. Have some licorice jelly beans for me.
Read on, and have a great week.

THE LAST MURDER AT THE END OF THE WORLD by Stuart Turton (Literary Mystery)
Solve the murder to save what's left of the world.
Outside the island, there is nothing. The world was destroyed by a fog that swept the planet, killing anyone it touched.
On the island, it is idyllic. One hundred and twenty-two villagers and three scientists are living in peaceful harmony. The villagers are content to fish, farm and feast, to obey their nightly curfew, to do what they're told by the scientists.
Until, to the horror of the islanders, one of their beloved scientists is found brutally stabbed to death. And then they learn that the murder has triggered a lowering of the security system around the island, the only thing that was keeping the fog at bay. If the murder isn't solved within 107 hours, the fog will smother the island --- and everyone on it.
But the security system also has wiped everyone's memories of exactly what happened the night before, which means that someone on the island is a murderer --- and they don't even know it.
And the clock is ticking.
