It was a great week for reading. Last weekend, I read WHAT HAPPENED TO NINA? by Dervla McTiernan. We actually find out what happened to Nina, who had been away with her boyfriend at his family’s 400-acre (yes, you read that right) property in Stowe, Vermont, sooner than you might expect. But where the story goes from there is just as interesting. Yes, you will think about the Gabby Petito case, but there is a lot more to ponder here. It will be a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection, and I will write more about it in the weeks to come.
On Wednesday night, I picked up DID I EVER TELL YOU? by Genevieve Kingston. When Genevieve was just four years old, her mother was diagnosed with cancer. By the time she was 11, her mom died. But her mom left behind a pink cardboard box for Genevieve, and it was filled with presents for every birthday through the age of 30, as well as gifts for other milestone occasions. Each was wrapped and had a card to go with it. As the story progresses, we learn that there are just three more cards and gifts to commemorate milestones --- engagement, marriage and first baby. Yes, this is doing a lot of tugging at heartstrings...and, oh, Genevieve’s brother also has received a batch of presents. And I am hoping she talks about those a bit as well.
Years ago, a friend’s wife passed away at a very young age, and I asked if she had been able to do something like this for their young son. Things had happened so quickly in her case that there was no time. Somehow that stayed with me, so as I am reading DID I EVER TELL YOU?, I am glad that here the mom did have the gift of time to be able to share the sentiments that would mean so much to her children. That alone truly was a gift.
Ever hear of book juggling? I do that a lot. And with so much to read, I joke that it is my superpower. At the start of the week, I opened a real delight of a book with Allison Pataki’s latest novel, FINDING MARGARET FULLER. What amazes me about Allison’s work is not just her writing that always draws me in, but her ability to introduce me to a woman in history who I feel like I should know about. And I wonder why I did not. When the book opens, Margaret has arrived at the home of Ralph Waldo Emerson and his wife. Henry David Thoreau also is staying with them doing handyman tasks around the house and the gardening. So the stage is set for readers to meet some of the brilliant writers and conversationalists of the day.
And this is just the start of Margaret’s story. As always, Allison’s prose is lively, and as it’s written in the first person, I really felt like I was in the room and on the grounds. So it was really lovely to be there to honor Allison last evening with a publication party at Rizzoli Bookstore. She was introduced brilliantly by her agent and then was in conversation with Fiona Davis. It was such a special evening. You can see a photo of me with Allison above. I look forward to reading more of the book this weekend!
I learned that FINDING MARGARET FULLER is the PBS Books Readers Club selection for March. You can see details on how to watch an interview with Allison on Wednesday, March 27th here. It also is one of three finalists for CBS New York's Book Club with Mary Calvi. You can cast your votes here as voting is open through Sunday, March 24th.
We are featuring our review of the book this week from Sarah Rachel Egelman, who says, “Margaret Fuller’s life was one of deep learning, hard work and adventure…. [T]he prose here is deft and the story sweeping. Overall, FINDING MARGARET FULLER is a lovely tribute to a remarkable and unfortunately all-but-forgotten American giant.”
And yes, I plan on interviewing Allison in the weeks ahead. I still am wrapping my head around all the literary luminaries who Margaret Fuller spent time with, and I know this is just the start of her story.
On Wednesday night, we hosted a special “Bookaccino Live” Spring Preview evening program. I presented 55 books that are either out now or soon to be released this spring that we think you will enjoy reading over the next few months. Included are fiction; historical fiction; thrillers and mysteries; and memoirs, biographies and other nonfiction. Click here to watch the event and here to see a list of the titles that I talked about. We are planning to do a Summer Preview evening program in June!
Our next evening event will be our “Bookaccino Live” Book Group featuring Kate Morton as our special guest. It will be held on Wednesday, April 24th at 8pm ET, and you can sign up here for it. We will be talking about Kate’s most recent novel, HOMECOMING. An epic story that spans generations, this New York Times bestseller and Bets On pick released in hardcover last year and will be coming out in paperback on April 2nd.
There will be a two-part Q&A session after I talk to Kate. For the first part, those who are asking a question on camera will be featured. This includes spending time with Kate backstage in our virtual green room before the show starts. If you would like to ask your question "live on screen" this way, please email me with the subject line "Kate" by noon ET on April 24th. Be sure to include your name, city and state, as well as your question. If you do not want to appear on camera but still would like to ask a question, please note that you want to be off camera, and share your question --- adding your name, city and state.
Being single is like playing the lottery. There’s always the chance that with one piece of paper you could win it all. That’s the tantalizing tagline of Rebecca Serle’s latest novel, EXPIRATION DATES, which will be an Indie Next pick for April. This gripping, emotional, passionate and (yes) heartbreaking novel is about what it means to be single, what it means to find love, and ultimately how we define each of them for ourselves.
Norah Piehl has our review and says, “Among other things, Rebecca Serle's novel is a love letter to Los Angeles --- not just to the entertainment industry in which Jake and Daphne work but also to the unsung, hidden places that most tourists might overlook or just be unaware of. It also manages to be both remarkably romantic and quite unexpected, casting a charming spell on readers ready to believe in a little magic --- or just the miracle of the everyday.”
Chris Bohjalian, who many of you know as the author of such bestsellers as THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT and THE LIONESS, is back with a new thriller. A Princess Diana impersonator and her estranged sister find themselves drawn into a dangerous game of money and murder in THE PRINCESS OF LAS VEGAS, a twisting tale of organized crime, cryptocurrency and family secrets on the Las Vegas strip.
We have TWO reviews of the book as our reviewers Roberta O’Hara and Ray Palen are such huge fans of Bohjalian’s work. Roberta says, “Bohjalian excels at creating flawed and pained women, with histories that are often shocking and always revelatory. Betsy and Crissy are in the tradition of some of his best female protagonists.... Bohjalian never fails to deliver a winner. THE PRINCESS OF LAS VEGAS is exactly that.” And according to Ray, the book “satisfies on so many levels and shows once again that Bohjalian is a writer worth following no matter what he produces.”
Roberta had the opportunity to chat with Bohjalian about his new release, along with some of his prior works, and the fascination that America continues to have with Princess Diana. Be sure to take a look at the interview here.
Word of Mouth Contest Reminder
EXPIRATION DATES and THE PRINCESS OF LAS VEGAS are our current Word of Mouth prizes. Submit your comments about the books you’ve read, and you’ll have a chance to win both these titles. Please do so by Friday, March 29th at noon ET.
Speaking of Word of Mouth, it has now been 10 years since our longtime reader and good friend, Melanie Steinberg (pictured above), has been editing this feature for us. We always appreciate her thoroughness as she reads the hundreds of entries for each contest period and fixes any spelling or grammatical errors. Thank you for all your hard work, Melanie! And here's to 10 more years!
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:
-
THE MORNINGSIDE: Téa Obreht is back with her first novel in five years, following THE TIGER WIFE in 2011 and INLAND in 2019. It is at once a sweeping tale of mothers and daughters, a haunting and atmospheric look at a world affected by climate change, and an enchanting folktale of the future.
-
AMERICAN SPIRITS: From the late Russell Banks, one of America’s most celebrated storytellers, comes three dark, interlocking tales about the residents of a rural New York town and the shocking headlines that become their local mythologies.
-
I PROMISE IT WON’T ALWAYS HURT LIKE THIS: Inspired by a viral Twitter thread that Clare Mackintosh wrote on the anniversary of her son's death (who was just five weeks old), this deeply honest, compassionate memoir will bring solace and encouragement to anyone who is grieving the loss of a loved one.
You have until Friday, March 29th at noon ET to enter our contest for LONG AFTER WE ARE GONE and be one of our 25 winners who will receive a copy of the book. Releasing on May 14th, Terah Shelton Harris’ second novel (following ONE SUMMER IN SAVANNAH) is the story of four siblings who return home in the wake of their father's death in order to save their family's home from being sold out from under them.
Here’s what Tara Conklin, the New York Times bestselling author of THE HOUSE GIRL and THE LAST ROMANTICS, says about the book: “Through the story of the four indelible Solomon siblings, Terah Shelton Harris sheds light on the little-known concept of heir property with characters who ring achingly true in their weaknesses, hopes and love for each other. LONG AFTER WE ARE GONE is a tour de force of history, injustice, and the brutal, beautiful everlasting ties of family.”
I had the pleasure of hearing Terah speak about this book at two pre-publication events, and I look forward to more conversation with her about it.
Revisiting My “Bookreporter Talks To” Interview with J.T. Ellison
Out in paperback this week is IT’S ONE OF US by J.T. Ellison, a twisting, emotionally layered thriller that explores the lies we tell to keep a marriage together --- or break each other apart. I talked to J.T. about the book last February when it released in hardcover, so if you missed the interview or would like to check it out again, you can watch it here or listen to the podcast here.
Spring Preview Contest Update
In this week’s 24-hour Spring Preview contest, we gave away the aforementioned FINDING MARGARET FULLER by Allison Pataki. Next week’s prize book will be Lisa Scottoline’s THE TRUTH ABOUT THE DEVLINS, a pulse-pounding domestic thriller about family, justice and the lies that tear us apart. The contest will be up at noon ET on the day of its release, Tuesday, March 26th.

News & Pop Culture
Reader Mail: Susan wrote to share this: “Just a quick note to say I agree 100% about Babe Paley's gravestone! I was so surprised to see how small and unimpressive it was portrayed in 'Feud: Capote vs. The Swans'. I actually looked it up and that really IS what it looks like. Disappointing. News & Pop Culture has become my favorite section. In addition to books (which we all love), I am always interested in what you are watching and your reactions to it since your tastes are quite similar to ours. Please continue sharing. You and your team consistently do a great job. Please know how much it is appreciated.” I am glad that you enjoy News & Pop Culture! I enjoy writing this section. And wow about the grave. I should have guessed that was factually correct!
Well, I heard from soooooo many of you about your thoughts on audiobooks that we decided to pull together your comments into a blog piece that you can read here. I have been listening as I work out on my Aeroski using the terrific Sonos speaker that I was gifted over the holidays. I still am enjoying THE WIVES by Simone Gorrindo on audio. One thing I must conquer: I typically fold down the pages in a book that I want to remember for author interviews. But here I feel like I have scattered notes all over my desk. I need to figure out a better system for this!
“In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon” on MGM+: “Verse One” of this documentary about Paul Simon was terrific last Sunday. Now, I confess that as an uber fan, I was familiar with a lot of the archival footage. I think my husband had to be going a tad crazy as I recited along with some of the commentary. But there still was a lot to learn. “Verse Two” airs on Sunday night at 9pm ET/PT. For the record, I think calling these “verses” is a tad too precious. Part one delved deeply into the Simon & Garfunkel years, but since their singing career under that name actually lasted about seven years (and a couple of subsequent events/tours), I am hoping that the years with African and Brazilian musicians are not given short shrift.
“Masters of the Air” on Apple TV+: This series ended last Friday night, and I loved the end credits where they acknowledged each of the pilots we had come to know. Here’s a piece that includes a video of the cast talking about the show.
“The Bloody Hundredth” on Apple TV+: This documentary, which we watched on Saturday, was another terrific piece about these heroic airmen.
Tommy Orange: There was a wonderful story in the New York Times about Tommy Orange’s visit to an inner-city classroom. Seriously, if you wonder about the power of an author to move teen readers, you will want to read this piece. I love the teacher request for him to visit his classroom and that Tommy did this event for no fee. We really need more moments like this inspiring young readers.
I spent the day yesterday in the city, starting at a terrific publisher lunch where I heard from five authors who I look forward to sharing with you in the weeks and months to come. Then I did a few meetings at the Penguin Random House offices. It’s hard to believe that it has been four years since I have visited publishers like this!
I am presenting Summer 2024 titles to a group of librarians on Tuesday, so my office has stacks of books, catalog pages and sticky notes about what to look forward to in the months ahead. Sharing books like this is a passion of mine, but I do confess that I stress over leaving out something amazing.
I am planning a quiet weekend. Yes, there will be basketball watching. And lots of reading; I feel behind no matter how quickly I read. I felt a tad better at yesterday’s media lunch when I heard something similar from other journalists at the table. None of us said that we ever feel truly caught up. There are times I wish there was a month with no new books; I still would have enough to read!
Read on, and have a great week.

Crissy Dowling passes her days by the pool in a private cabana, and each evening she transforms into a Princess, performing her musical cabaret inspired by the life of the late Diana Spencer.
