It has been such a busy start to the year that the other night I asked my husband what the date was. When he said January 10th, I thought he was wrong. It had to be at least the first week in February. The past nine days in the office have been so busy. We are working on some terrific events and batting around new contest ideas.
It was really nice to host our first “Bookaccino Live” book preview event of the year on Wednesday. We will have the video of that for you next week, but in the meantime, you can see a list of the books that we talked about here.
We loved seeing the chat amongst the members of the audience who were there live. While we are not in the same room physically, we definitely feel their energy. There were more than 300 people in attendance, and after we turned off the cameras, Tom and I answered questions from the audience about book trends and upcoming titles for about a half hour. The opportunity to interact like that with readers is something that we never take for granted, and we so appreciate it. Luckily we quit when we did as my laptop battery was dying.
My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Amanda Peters, whose hit debut novel, THE BERRY PICKERS, is a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection. Amanda, who is a mixed-race of Mi’kmaq and European ancestry, was born and raised in Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia. She explains how a trip with her father to Maine to see the actual site of the blueberry picking that is depicted in the book spurred the story. As he walked her through the fields and showed her the cabin where he and his family had lived during picking season, the story came to her.
Amanda had the opening line very quickly, and from there she wrote the book over a period of four years. For a long time, it was just in the voice of Joe, but she later saw that to have Norma’s story told would bring something else to the novel. She shares how writing THE BERRY PICKERS has brought her closer to her Mi’kmaq roots and her very pleasant surprise at how the book has resonated so well with American readers. Plus, she discusses what she is working on now and offers a look ahead beyond that. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast.
Please keep in mind that this month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event will take place on Wednesday, January 24th at 8pm ET.
Our guest will be Lisa See, and she will be talking about her #1 New York Times bestseller, LADY TAN'S CIRCLE OF WOMEN, which was a Bets On pick when it released last June. This outstanding novel was inspired by the true story of a woman physician from 15th-century China.
You can register for the event by clicking here. If you would like to ask Lisa a question about the book on camera during the event, please email me with your question using the subject line “Lisa” by January 24th at noon ET. Be sure to include your name, city and state, as well as your question. If you do not want to appear on camera but still would like to ask a question, please note that you want to be off camera, and share your question --- adding your name, city and state.
THE HEIRESS is a new work of Gothic suspense from Rachel Hawkins, whose previous New York Times bestsellers are THE WIFE UPSTAIRS, RECKLESS GIRLS and THE VILLA. Her latest twisted thriller is about an infamous heiress and the complicated inheritance she left behind.
According to our reviewer Pamela Kramer, “Hawkins forces us to consider this question: What are the truths that we can live with and the truths that we don't need to know?... In THE HEIRESS, we are left wondering who the good guys are and what the truth is. It's an interesting point, and Hawkins has us thinking carefully about our own truths and how they influence our lives.”
Matthew Blake’s much-talked-about debut thriller, ANNA O, dives into the little-explored world of sleep-related crimes and is being compared to the works of Gillian Flynn, A. J. Finn and Alex Michaelides. It’s about a young woman who seemingly commits a double murder while sleepwalking and the forensic psychologist who alone can get to the truth.
Ray Palen has our review and says, “Matthew Blake fills ANNA O with clues, red herrings and plot twists, all of which culminate in a finale that is completely unexpected. This major thriller debut should be remembered at the end of the year as ‘Best Books of 2024’ lists are being compiled.” I am reading the book now, and Ray's review has me contemplating, “How IS this going to end?”
Word of Mouth Reminder
ANNA O is one of the prizes in our Word of Mouth contest; the other is THE FURY by the aforementioned Alex Michaelides, an upcoming Bets On pick that we will review next week. Submit your comments about the books you’ve read, and you’ll have a chance to win both these titles. Please do so by Friday, January 19th at noon ET.
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:
-
THE BOOK OF FIRE: This latest novel from Christy Lefteri, whose debut, THE BEEKEEPER OF ALEPPO was a Bets On pick, is the story of a family in present-day Greece and the reckoning that comes in the wake of a wildfire that consumes their home and shatters the world as they know it.
-
RABBIT HOLE: Kate Brody explores the dark side of true crime fandom and the blurry lines of female friendship in this twisty debut perfect for fans of the aforementioned Gillian Flynn, "My Favorite Murder" and "Fleabag." Conspiracy theories from Reddit seduce a disaster-prone woman into an obsession with solving her older sister’s cold-case disappearance.
-
COLD VICTORY: Set in Helsinki in 1947, Karl Marlantes’ new novel is about two ex-soldier military attachés from Russia and the US who drunkenly challenge each other to a friendly but secret cross-country wilderness ski race. Misconstrued as a battle between freedom and communism, the news spreads like wildfire across the globe while the racers are unreachable within Finland’s arctic wilderness.
-
HOLIDAY COUNTRY: İnci Atrek’s debut novel follows 19-year-old Ada as she mischievously attempts to rekindle a foregone love interest from her mother's past. Much to Ada's surprise, as she stealthily tries to reignite the romance, she finds herself growing attracted to the mystery man and decides she wants him all to herself.
We’re Betting You’ll Love…
My first Bets On title of the year is FIRST LIE WINS by Ashley Elston, which we reviewed last week. This instant New York Times bestseller is Reese’s Book Club pick for January, an Indie Next selection, a LibraryReads pick, and a Book of the Month selection. Click here for my commentary. I look forward to interviewing Ashley next week!

Reader Mail:
Cheryle wrote about my thoughts concerning page counts vs. book counts: “In this last newsletter, there was a note from a reader that prompted you to respond that you may need to have us readers compile the number of pages we read. One of the ways I track what I have read in a year is with Goodreads. In the yearly challenge, it has a feature that records the number of pages for the edition of each book I’ve read. At the end of the year in the summary, it totals the number of pages read, as well as the longest book, the shortest book and an average. It is fun to review these statistics and see how I compare this year to other years.
“For 2023, I read 140 books (fewer than normal due to health issues), and the total pages was 50,677. The longest book was THE INK BLACK HEART at 1,390 pages, and the shortest was GLACIER COUNTRY at 88 pages. The average book length was 361 pages with an average rating of 4.3. I also have kept an Excel spreadsheet for many years. On the spreadsheet, I do post the number of pages, and I could use the 'add feature' there to come up with the same totals as Goodreads, but I am lazy and would rather be reading something else than doing the math.
“These might be some suggestions for others who are interested in seeing their progress and analyzing their reading. Keep up the excellent work you all do to provide us with insights into the books we love to read.”
Janice, who was the Grand Prize winner in our 2021 Bets On Contest, wrote, “I was glad to get up early this morning and find a new Bookreporter newsletter waiting for me in my inbox! It is a great way to start 2024. I love reading all the titles from your Bets On selections for 2023, and I'm feeling happy for the lucky winner who gets to open those boxes of new books! Between that list and the titles mentioned by your reviewers on the night they appeared to tell us about their favorites, I have a long list started for my reading priorities this year! Thanks once again for all that you and your team do to bring the latest book news to your readers. Having Bookreporter and all your newsletters enhances my retirement life.”
Speaking of which, we will announce the winners of our 2023 Bets On Contest in next week's newsletter!
Becci wrote, “Thank you for having 'Bookaccino Live.' As a bookseller, it is a tremendous help for me as I introduce these books to our customers.”
Goodreads: The 76 Most Popular Books of the Past Decade: I took a look at this article. I know of most of these books, but even with all the reading that I have done, I have read just 28 of them.
“Break Point” on Netflix: Just in time for the Australian Open, which Editorial Director Tom reminds me starts on Sunday, season two of this fabulous series on Netflix premiered this week.
“Fool Me Once” on Netflix: I really enjoyed this series. It has a terrific wrap-up.
The 75th Emmy Awards on FOX: This airs on Monday night as the awards season continues.
I had book group at the house last night, and the Christmas decorations still are up. I joked that “the stockings still were hung by the chimney with care.” We will be taking all of it down this weekend. It is faster to take it down than it is to put it up!
I am taking a weaving class tomorrow, so I can finally learn what I need to know to use the loom that I got in December 2019 as a Christmas present. Then COVID happened, and well, life got in the way. I am looking forward to this as I have a lot of yarn and ideas of things that I would like to make. Of course, I act like I have lots of free time to weave. My husband is known for saying that I have ideas for what to do in 24 hours that would take at least 72.
There will be football this weekend. And I am hoping there will be lots of time for reading.
Read on, and have a great week.

FIRST LIE WINS by Ashley Elston
Reese’s Book Club Pick for January
FIRST LIE WINS by Ashley Elston (Psychological Thriller)
When I was on vacation last summer, I read FIRST LIE WINS by Ashley Elston and could not wait for it to come out so I could discuss it with people. I read a lot of thrillers and am used to twists, but this book definitely ratcheted up the game…a lot! I am not alone in saying this as friends who are now reading it are calling and writing to tell me “how good” it is.
The protagonist is Evie Porter, a con woman, but on the current “job” she likes the guy she is conning, which definitely presents a challenge. She’s thinking about getting out of the game, but then someone shows up. This makes her wonder just how she ever will be able to walk away from the life she has been living --- and what that life would look like.
