Bring on the Watermelon Radishes
This time of year brings out some of my favorite produce, including watermelon radishes. We went to the farmers' market last week on a quest to find these. I found some amazing long fat radishes, but I was told that the watermelon ones are a week or so away. But at least I know which farmer is going to have them. I bought some fat carrots and am thinking of what to do with them. I also bought some sinfully rich cinnamon raisin bread that is beyond decadent. I love the smell of eucalyptus and how it looks dried out around the house. I held off on buying bunches last week as I did not have time to get them arranged, but this is a project on the list for the next few weeks. I do love the stunning purple color of the mums (pictured above) that come out first this time of year.
This week I went to the movies twice, which is something rare, and both times the theater surprisingly was not crowded. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour was such fun. There was a nonstop energy about it that was enormously inspiring. I love to see how big shows come together. The sets and staging are over the top, aside from the costumes and dance routines. I kept thinking of what went into building that at every venue and the details that made it a wow! The connection between Taylor and her fans was magnetic. It looked like she was singing directly to each of them. Could I sing one of her songs? No way. BUT it was bigger than the music. Here’s a terrific article about the tour by Taffy Brodesser-Akner.
Then last night, Tom (Husband Tom, not Editorial Director Tom) and I went to see Killers of the Flower Moon. I confess to Books on Screen heresy as I had not read the book. It’s a BIG film, both in the size of the cast, and the depth and breadth of the scenery and material. Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro play their roles well, but to me the brilliant star was Lily Gladstone, who played Mollie, the Osage woman who married DiCaprio’s character, Ernest Burkhart. Her stoic look and posture, along with her speech pacing that began with a voice-over at the start of the film, gave me pause. I think DiCaprio is better when he is in motion and not as cerebral.
Martin Scorsese came on at the start to thank the audience for seeing the movie in the theater...and I agree that this, like Taylor’s movie, are theater films. Tom thought it could have been 20 minutes shorter, and I do agree. If every pause was shortened by a few seconds, it would have been brisker. Keep in mind that with the actors’ strike, there is going to be a lot less publicity for the movie than usual. But this is a great article done months ago with Scorsese, DiCaprio and De Niro.
On Wednesday afternoon, we hosted our first-ever LIVE “Bookreporter Talks To” program. Our guest was William Kent Krueger, who talked about his latest novel, THE RIVER WE REMEMBER, a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick that was just named a Barnes & Noble Best Mystery of 2023 Selection. Six of the 25 readers who won a copy of the book in a contest we ran over the summer appeared on camera to ask Kent questions that they submitted to us ahead of time. There were a number of contest winners who either were camera-shy or couldn’t make it to the live event, so I shared their questions with Kent on their behalf.
We covered a variety of topics during the interview, including Kent’s inspiration for the book, his choice of setting, his writing process, why he is able to write such strong female characters, how the book’s title came about, what’s next for him, and so much more. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. We all had such a blast doing this, and we’re hoping to do more live interviews like this in the future! A huge thanks to the readers who participated for making this such a wonderful event.

What became of Mitch and Abby McDeere after they exposed the crimes of Memphis law firm Bendini, Lambert & Locke and fled the country? The answer is in THE EXCHANGE, the long-awaited sequel to THE FIRM, the blockbuster thriller that launched John Grisham’s extraordinary career. Mitch and Abby have settled into a quiet New York City life with their kids --- he’s a partner at a major law firm, she’s a cookbook editor --- until a colleague of Mitch’s is kidnapped, and the past comes roaring back.
According to our reviewer Stuart Shiffman, the book “does move along with some intrigue and holds your attention, but the finale’s lack of excitement left me wanting more. Still, there is no doubt in my mind that 2024 will find me reading another outstanding John Grisham book.”
When Michael Lewis first met him, Sam Bankman-Fried was the world’s youngest billionaire and crypto’s Gatsby. CEOs, celebrities and leaders of small countries all vied for his time and cash after he catapulted, practically overnight, onto the Forbes billionaire list. Who was this rumpled guy in cargo shorts and limp white socks, whose eyes twitched across Zoom meetings as he played video games on the side? In GOING INFINITE, Michael Lewis sets out to answer this question.
Harvey Freedenberg has our review and says, “GOING INFINITE is the story of this modern-day Icarus’ meteoric ascent and his equally spectacular fall, told with the bestselling author’s trademark storytelling skill and elan.... Lewis…never loses sight of the human story he’s telling, even as he navigates the sometimes murky depths of the cryptocurrency business.... GOING INFINITE is a stark reminder that when someone’s outsized financial success appears too good to be true, we shouldn’t be surprised if it is.”
I have started reading this book. I loved earlier pieces where I learned that Bankman-Fried was running a multi-billion-dollar company using QuickBooks for accounting and Slack for trading. Those alone were clues as to how much he did not grasp what kind of an operation he was running.
THE TWELVE DOGS OF CHRISTMAS, Susan Wiggs’ latest book, would make a wonderful gift for the holidays, especially for the dog lover in your life. This delightful novel is about a Christmas transport of rescue puppies that will warm readers’ hearts. This quote from Debbie Macomber appears on the front cover: “Don't miss this charming Christmas tale of thawing hearts, escaping dogs, and finding home. I couldn't help digging into this book with both paws.”
According to our reviewer Pamela Kramer, “If this sweet read doesn't get your heart ready for the season of giving, then your heart is as filled with ice as the fictional upstate New York town of Avalon is with snow and holiday cheer…. As Wiggs points out in her Author's Note, dog (and cat) transports are a real thing. Many shelters and rescues in the North bring up dogs from the South, where the shelters are overflowing, and animals are often killed on a daily basis to make room for new arrivals. It's heartbreaking.”
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:
-
ROMAN STORIES: Rome --- metropolis and monument, suspended between past and future, multifaceted and metaphysical --- is the protagonist, not the setting, of these nine stories by Jhumpa Lahiri, her first short story collection since UNACCUSTOMED EARTH.
-
DEATH VALLEY: In Melissa Broder’s latest novel, which is October’s #1 Indie Next pick, a woman checks into a motel in the California desert to escape a cloud of sorrow around her critically ill father and chronically sick husband. A desert hike leads her to a mystical cactus --- and a confrontation with the very things she’s running from.
-
THE WITCH OF MARACOOR: Following a confrontation with her reclusive great-grandfather, Rainary Ko --- the granddaughter of Oz’s Wicked Witch of the West --- has re-upped in a mission to settle a few scores and right a wrong or two in this final installment of Gregory Maguire’s Another Day series.

Joan wrote this about William Kent Krueger’s “Bookreporter Talks To” live program: “Carol, thank you so much, that was terrific. He is as lyrical in speaking as he is in his writing.”
Marilyn wrote about reading THE RIVER WE REMEMBER: “WOW, I just finished this book last night and actually had tears in my eyes. I belong to Goodreads, and hopefully I will post today --- and give this book a well-deserved 5 stars. It’s been a while since I’ve rated anything 5 stars, but this book deserved it! Sometimes I will ‘read quickly,’ but right away I knew this was a book to read slowly and appreciate the writing, the story and the characters. I also liked that the author put in an epilogue --- even if I didn’t like what happened to some of the characters. Wow, this man can write!”
Sheree wrote this about winning THE MUSEUM OF FAILURES and WELLNESS in Word of Mouth: “Thank you so much! You have made my day! I am so excited to read both books! I love your newsletter. Finally, I have a source that recommends book that I love to read! Keep up the good work. Happy Reading!”
Sue wrote, “Thank you, Carol! I received BRIGHT YOUNG WOMEN today. Thank you for your amazing book website!!! I love it and seeing all the books you post.”
“Messi Meets America” on Apple TV+: I'm really enjoying this six-part documentary, especially after watching “Beckham” on Netflix. I truly knew zip about soccer before and know a tad more now.
“Lessons in Chemistry” on Apple TV+: Hmmmm I LOVED the book by Bonnie Garmus, but I think the two episodes I watched felt so disjointed compared to the book. I know they are not the same, but I am not sure how many people who have not read the book will understand the power of the story, which was so well done in the book. Bonnie talks about those changes and her feelings about them in this piece. Episode three released today, and I will watch later tonight. Reserving final judgment!
“Big Vape: The Rise and Fall of Juul” on Netflix: I knew a lot about this topic, but not the origin of the brand. The number of teens vaping was just terrifying!
“The Morning Show” on Apple TV+: To me, the theme of this week’s episode is “no one can keep a secret.”
“Bosch: Legacy” on Amazon Freevee: Season two is now available. Here’s an interview with Michael Connelly about this season.
Robert Kolker on the Gilgo Beach Killer in the New York Times: Here's a fabulous new piece about these murders by the author of LOST GIRLS, the 2013 book that revolves around this case and was made into a Netflix film in 2020. You all should be able to read the article as I unlocked it.
The weekend will still be about wrapping up summer and moving into fall. The pool is still open, and the Cleopatra tent is still up. I have some books to read for upcoming interviews, which I am excited to delve into. Publishers are sending 2024 titles my way, and we already are planning events and features. We have some new ideas up our sleeves.
Even with everything else happening in day-to-day life, I notice that I am watching television at points during the day to keep up on the very tragic events that are swirling in Israel and Gaza. My thoughts are with those of you who are feeling vulnerable and overwhelmed at this time. The dire threats of what could happen around the world leave us all on edge. I feel like we are in a period of waiting…for what comes next.
Read on, and have a good week.

That attention comes from the Secretary of Defense. All of a sudden, he wants an interagency task force to investigate. And he wants Jack Reacher as the army’s representative.

SISTERS UNDER THE RISING SUN is a story of women in war: a novel of sisterhood, bravery and friendship in the darkest of circumstances, from the multimillion-copy bestselling author of THE TATTOOIST OF AUSCHWITZ, CILKA'S JOURNEY and THREE SISTERS.
