We have added a number of new subscribers in the last few weeks, including some who signed up after entering our recent William Kent Krueger contest, which also was promoted in Kent's newsletter. So I wanted to take a moment to welcome you to the Bookreporter newsletter!
I have been doing something that I call Sleep Math, which is what happens when you are reading a great book --- and you know what time you need to get up in the morning. Say it’s 11pm when you start reading, and you need to be up at 7am. Yes, that’s eight hours, the ideal number of hours to sleep according to many doctors. But then you keep reading and see where it goes. It becomes a 2am or 3am night. Suddenly the math gets more interesting. There are fewer hours of shut-eye, but lots more great reading.
Last weekend, I definitely did a lot of sleep math to get a few more (okay, a lot more) pages of reading in.
First, I read THE WOMEN by Kristin Hannah, which I loved and have found myself reflecting on this week. Set during the 1960s and '70s, it's about women who served as nurses in the Vietnam War, including what drew them to enlist, their roles in the war that are anything but what they expected, and the harsh reality they encountered when they came home as they were looked at as anything but heroes.
I loved her character, Frankie, who left a privileged life in the San Diego area for the jungles of Vietnam. She plunges into a world where decisions are made quickly in life-threatening situations. She is never far away from the heartbeats of war, and the pace at which she ministers to young men wounded on the battlefield is brisk. At the start Frankie is overwhelmed, but we acclimate with her as we read.
One of my favorite moments comes a lot later when Frankie is riding in a helicopter with her feet swung over the side of the open door. Yes, she has come to find moments of joy while being “in country.” Then we come home with her, and we learn how her “time away” has been explained by her parents and the damage that has been done to her, as she ducks when she hears loud noises --- the same PTSD that male soldiers feel, though it has not been readily explored for the women who served.
Reading historical fiction that is set during my lifetime --- and history with such huge consequences to many still alive today --- was something that dredged up a lot of memories, and it made me do a lot of thinking about that time in our country. THE WOMEN is coming out on February 6th, and I look forward to hearing what you think about it. It will be perfect for a book group discussion. Plan for that now! This is my first announced Bookreporter.com Bets On selection of 2024.
My sleep math also was challenged as I read CALIFORNIA GOLDEN by Melanie Benjamin and NONE OF THIS IS TRUE by Lisa Jewell, both of which we review this week (more on them later). I regret none of these waking hours. Oh, and to take your sleep math equation further --- this is for high-math majors --- you also must deduct the hours you woke up from a clap of thunder or pouring rain, and instead of going back to sleep, you read “a few more chapters.”

Lisa Jewell, whose numerous bestsellers include THE FAMILY UPSTAIRS, THE FAMILY REMAINS, THEN SHE WAS GONE and INVISIBLE GIRL, returns with a brand new psychological thriller. In the aforementioned NONE OF THIS IS TRUE, a woman finds herself the subject of her own popular true-crime podcast.
Bronwyn Miller has our review and has this to say: “Fast-paced and ominous, NONE OF THIS IS TRUE jumps from the past to the present and is peppered with scenes from an upcoming true-crime documentary involving both Alix and Josie, as readers race to the nightmarish conclusion. With shades of Patricia Highsmith’s STRANGERS ON A TRAIN and THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY, and Gail Honeyman’s ELEANOR OLIPHANT IS COMPLETELY FINE, Jewell weaves a compellingly creepy tale that will haunt readers long after they have closed the book.” I am looking forward to finishing this one tonight!
The aforementioned CALIFORNIA GOLDEN is the latest novel from Melanie Benjamin, whose previous works of historical fiction include THE CHILDREN’S BLIZZARD, MISTRESS OF THE RITZ, THE GIRLS IN THE PICTURE and THE SWANS OF FIFTH AVENUE. Here, two sisters navigate the thrilling, euphoric early days of California surf culture in a dazzling saga of ambition, sacrifice, and the tangled ties between mothers and daughters.
According to our reviewer Norah Piehl, “Carol is not exactly a sympathetic character, but Benjamin vividly shows why she makes the choices that she does.... I hesitate to label any book a beach read, but how could you call CALIFORNIA GOLDEN anything but? This sun-drenched, cautiously optimistic novel simply begs to be read under the summer sun, against a backdrop of wave sounds.” I read the book last Sunday, and I look forward to interviewing Melanie soon!
Tracey Lange follows up her debut novel, WE ARE THE BRENNANS, with THE CONNELLYS OF COUNTY DOWN, an upcoming Bets On selection about testing the bounds of love and loyalty. The book explores the possibility of beginning our lives anew and reveals the pitfalls of shielding each other from the bitter truth.
Our reviewer Rebecca Munro says, “In her sophomore release, Lange kicks up the dysfunction and amplifies the heart, crafting a story of love and loyalty that solidifies her presence in the world of contemporary literature.... Compassionate and insightful, moving and raw, THE CONNELLYS OF COUNTY DOWN is proof that Tracey Lange is here to stay and keeps getting better with every book. This emotionally charged novel is perfect for readers of Mary Beth Keane, Emma Straub and Ethan Joella.” I had a wonderful conversation with Tracey yesterday, which we will feature in next week’s newsletter, followed by my Bets On commentary the following week.
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:
-
SHARK HEART: Emily Habeck’s debut novel of marriage, motherhood, metamorphosis and letting go is this month’s #1 Indie Next pick. This intergenerational love story begins with newlyweds Wren and her husband, Lewis --- a man who, over the course of nine months, transforms into a great white shark.
-
JUST ANOTHER MISSING PERSON: Gillian McAllister, whose previous novel WRONG PLACE WRONG TIME was a Reese’s Book Club pick last year, is back with a heart-stopping new thriller in which a missing person case unravels deeper, darker secrets that lead a detective to an impossible moral choice.
-
WINDFALL: Wendy Corsi Staub’s latest thriller, which we spotlighted in this year’s Summer Reading feature, is about three friends whose lives terrifyingly unravel when they win a billion-dollar lottery jackpot --- and one goes missing.
I’m Betting You’ll Love…
STRANGE SALLY DIAMOND by Liz Nugent, which we reviewed last month, is my latest Bets On pick. Click here for my commentary. If you missed my interview with Liz from last week, you can watch it here or listen to the podcast here.

Reader Mail:
Alice wrote, “Thank you for my Word of Mouth prize books. I am a big fan of Shari Lapena and have read most of her books. So I am excited to read EVERYONE HERE IS LYING. I have not read Colson Whitehead, so I am looking forward to CROOK MANIFESTO. Bookreporter does such a good job, and I find so many good books to read.”
Gina wrote in to comment about my years at The Book Report Network: “I was so happy that you consider your years with Bookreporter.com to be your 'diamond' years. Having your weekly email in my inbox is a gift. Thank you for all that you and the staff do to give book readers like me this special delivery.” That is so kind, Gina!
Myra wrote after attending our “Bookaccino Live” event on Wednesday: “As soon as I heard you reading the synopsis of AJ Pearce’s book, MRS. PORTER CALLING, I knew it sounded familiar. After you and Tom signed off, I went to my list of books read from the Los Angeles Public Library and found the one that I thought it sounded like. I read it in 2019, and the title was DEAR MRS. BIRD. And guess who the author is? Yes, AJ Pearce. The characters and plots are different, but it's still set in wartime London. Check it out.” It was very interesting as I thought it sounded like another book!
Cynthia also wrote after attending “Bookaccino Live”: “Bookreporter is always grand! I sent a small contribution to your GoFundMe. UNRAVELING OLIVER is such a terrific story. I literally could not put it down. Thanks for revealing Liz Nugent!”
“The Lincoln Lawyer” on Netflix: A terrific second season. We already are looking forward to season three.
“Painkiller” on Netflix: The series is based on the book PAIN KILLER by Barry Meier and the New Yorker article “The Family That Built the Empire of Pain” by Patrick Radden Keefe. I started it last night and watched all six episodes. It’s that addicting. Pun intended. I have long admired Peter Berg’s work, and a series that opens and closes with Simon & Garfunkel singing “Sounds of Silence”...well, let’s just say I was with it from start to finish. You can do lots of "sleep math" here.
“Billions”: It's back for a seventh and final season. It starts tonight on Paramount+ and Sunday night on Showtime.
This weekend, I have reserved a lounger in my Cleopatra reading tent for a friend who also is a mega reader. And I am determined to chart out which flowers are where in the gardens, so I know what we have here next season. Some stunning pinkish white dinner plate-sized hibiscus flowers came to life this week; I do not remember planting them. I tossed a bunch of seeds into planters very late in the season, but I think that they are close to turning into some multi-colored zinnias. Some annuals are fading, while others are peaking.
I do wish the warm weather lasted longer. Just as I feel like we really hit a groove with summer, the sun starts setting earlier. Which reminds me, I need a reading light out in the tent! Off to take care of that.
Read on, and have a great week.

STRANGE SALLY DIAMOND by Liz Nugent
STRANGE SALLY DIAMOND by Liz Nugent (Psychological Thriller)
I have been a fan of Liz Nugent’s books since her debut, UNRAVELING OLIVER. So when STRANGE SALLY DIAMOND got on my radar, I had a feeling that I would be in for a terrific psychological thriller. And boy, did it deliver, with a very interesting premise and execution.
As the book opens, Sally’s father has passed away, and she has followed the instructions that he told her in one of their conversations --- that after he died, she should put him out in the bin. And well, since garbage is typically burned, she takes steps to try to burn him. Readers quickly see that Sally has some challenges with taking things literally. She clocks in on the neurodiverse spectrum and does not always get an implied joke. From this action, the town is now paying attention to Sally.

For years, Carol has moderated book festivals and author events around the country. But we know that readers often do not live where they can attend an author event. Our goal is to bring these author interviews to readers, wherever they may be. Watch on video, or listen as a podcast. (The podcasts include audio excerpts.)
