Summertime: Time for Floating and Reading
This is the time of year when the flowers in the yard are really spectacular. The giant hibiscus flowers in the first picture above are among my favorites. For a really long time, the second garden was peonies and irises. Both bloom by late spring, and after that this garden always looked terrible. For a few years, we had lots of rudbeckia, but so many of those plants died off. So we --- okay, let’s get real, it was my husband, not me --- pulled out all the iris bulbs and then planted all the perennials that I brought home around the few remaining rudbeckia and a peony plant that we got from his mom. The original peonies are off to the left in the second picture above. Just looking at it makes me happy!
It was a great week for reading.
Wow, Liz Nugent did such a terrific job with STRANGE SALLY DIAMOND. I wish that I had read it before I saw her in East Hampton at Hamptons Whodunit so we could have talked about it in person, but I am looking forward to setting up a “Bookreporter Talks To” interview with her. If I hear that she wrote this organically instead of plotting, I am going to be shocked. It’s dark, I will not deny that, but it’s dark in all of the best ways.
Sally Diamond is a recluse. When the book begins, she has tried to incinerate her dead father. To be fair, she took him literally when he jokingly told her to do this with his body when he died. Sally has her own way of seeing the world. But he actually was her adoptive father, who, along with his wife, took her from a horrifically tough childhood. What we learn about her past, well, that’s just part of the story. There is a whole lot more to Sally Diamond's world to be shared. It will be a Bets On pick for those who like twisty tales, and I am going to share more of what I loved about it in the weeks to come. In the meantime, be sure to check out our review in next week's newsletter.
Then I read THE BLOCK PARTY by Jamie Day, cramming in nights of reading all week. I was so hooked that I stayed up until 2:30 last night to read more. My eyes were back open to finish it at 7:30 this morning. It came packed with a ton of great blurbs from authors --- and they were spot-on about it. It captured me from the very first page.
Its characters are residents of a very exclusive cul-de-sac on Alton Road. They have an annual block party, and as the book opens, readers meet the characters and see the setup. Then there is a gunshot. But instead of continuing the story, we are swept back to the summer of the year before and learn what led up to this event, which includes secrets and lots of scandal. Whew, living on this block is anything but calm and quiet. And yes, it has one of my favorite things in a domestic thriller --- a message board from the neighboring neighborhood where those who do not live on this exclusive block are happy to weigh in and gossip.
We have our review this week from Rebecca Munro, and it will be a Bets On selection. Jamie Day is a pseudonym, so I will not be able to interview the author on camera, but I am going to see if I can do a written interview with the same kinds of questions that I normally ask on screen.
My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Carolyn Mackler, whose first book for adults is THE WIFE APP, which we reviewed earlier this month. I am a huge fan of Carolyn’s YA novels, including THE EARTH, MY BUTT, AND OTHER BIG ROUND THINGS; TANGLED; GUYAHOLIC; VEGAN VIRGIN VALENTINE; and LOVE AND OTHER FOUR-LETTER WORDS.
Carolyn got the idea for this book while talking to her mom friends about the kind of work that typically is handled by women in the family --- filling out school forms, arguing with the insurance company, and so much more. In THE WIFE APP, three divorced women join forces to create an app where tasks like these are work-for-hire. Carolyn gives readers a glimpse into her very different characters and how they embrace challenges. She also talks about what’s next for her. Colson Whitehead is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner for THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD (which also won the National Book Award) and THE NICKEL BOYS. His latest novel, CROOK MANIFESTO, is a continuation of his Harlem trilogy that started with HARLEM SHUFFLE and summons 1970s New York in all its seedy glory.
Norah Piehl has our review and says, “[The book’s] three-part structure feels a bit like a classic play in three acts, which is consistent with the way that Whitehead effectively blends high and low culture in his novel. He uses all the conventions of crime fiction while also exploring and commenting on the structural bases for poverty and crime, as well as New York City’s ever-evolving built environment…. Colson Whitehead might be a literary chameleon, eager to try his hand at a variety of genres and modes, but his writerly perceptiveness and stylistic talents shine through.”
Word of Mouth Reminder
CROOK MANIFESTO is one of our current Word of Mouth prizes; the other is EVERYONE HERE IS LYING by Shari Lapena, which we will review next week. Submit your comments about the books you’ve read, and you’ll be in the running to win both these titles. Please do so by Friday, July 28th at noon ET.
THE COLLECTOR is the 23rd entry in Daniel Silva’s action-packed series starring Gabriel Allon. This time, the legendary art restorer and spy joins forces with a brilliant and beautiful master-thief to track down the world’s most valuable missing painting. But soon he finds himself in a desperate race to prevent an unthinkable conflict between Russia and the West.
According to our reviewer Kate Ayers, “Even with the master spy retired, the thrills and tensions run high.... Of course, Daniel Silva would write a story with nothing less than spectacular drama that moves along with the speed of lightning. He has brought his protagonist out of retirement for the most important assignment yet. THE COLLECTOR is very timely and scary as the devil!”
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:
-
CUTTING TEETH: Part murder mystery, part motherhood manifesto, Chandler Baker’s latest novel of domestic suspense explores the standards that society holds mothers to --- along with the ones to which we hold ourselves --- and the things no one tells you about becoming a parent.
-
AFTER DEATH: A modern-day Lazarus is humanity’s last hope in Dean Koontz’s new novel about the absolute powers of good and evil. From the tarnished glamour of Beverly Hills to the streets of South Central to a walled estate in Rancho Santa Fe, only he can ensure that light survives in a rapidly darkening world.
-
A TWISTED LOVE STORY: Samantha Downing, whose previous novels are the bestsellers MY LOVELY WIFE, HE STARTED IT and FOR YOUR OWN GOOD, is back with a reckless thriller that gives a whole new meaning to the dangers of modern dating.
I’m Betting You’ll Love…
My three latest Bets On selections are LITTLE MONSTERS by Adrienne Brodeur (who I recently interviewed), THE BETTER HALF by Alli Frank and Asha Youmans, and HER, TOO by Bonnie Kistler. Click on each of the titles to see why I’m betting you’ll love these books.

The aforementioned THE BLOCK PARTY by Jamie Day was this week’s Summer Reading contest title. We wrap up these 24-hour giveaways next week with our final prize book, PROM MOM by Laura Lippman, which we will review in our next newsletter. The contest will be up on Tuesday, July 25th at noon ET.

News & Pop Culture
Reader Mail: Donna wrote, “I was pleased to discover that I had been selected to receive two free books: THE FIRST LADIES and THE BEACH AT SUMMERLY in a recent Word of Mouth contest. I am thrilled about these selections, both of which were on my TBR list. I plan to share these with my book club members. I appreciate all of your efforts in supporting readers and authors. I look forward to receiving the books. Thanks again.”
For Those Looking Forward to Oppenheimer: Here’s a reminder that the movie is based on AMERICAN PROMETHEUS: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. I want to see both this and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (I unabashedly am a Tom Cruise fan).
“Hijack” on Apple TV+: I really am enjoying this series, but I confess that I am more of a binge watcher. One episode a week reminds me too much of network TV. Bah humbug. Going forward, I need to wait until all the episodes load to watch.
“The Bear” on Hulu: I purposely have held back on watching the last two weeks of episodes so I can partially binge, but I hear that they are great. I also think that when we cook, my husband and I should call each other “chef.”
“Janet Jackson.” on Hulu: I put this documentary on the other night while I was answering email and was surprised by how much I did not know about her career and success.
I learned that “Three Pines” will not be returning to Amazon Prime for a second season. We enjoyed the first season, so I am sorry that the series will not be continuing.
Humor is when you are really excited about watching the new season of “Sweet Magnolias” and you realize that you were thinking of the plot lines and characters from “Virgin River” when you were watching the recap. Yes, it is one giant soap opera, but there are nights that you just want to unwind with a soap!
Tom and I had such a fun time with my dad and my cousins last weekend. I was teased about making too much food --- and four desserts. They should only know that I forgot to cook and serve 12 ears of corn. Someone said that it was nice to see each other out of love and not a funeral obligation. I totally agree, and I do hope to do this again. My dad really enjoyed it.
I have zero plans for the weekend beyond going out for pizza tonight. I have a big stack of books that I have been craving time to read. My book group is meeting on Tuesday night to discuss THE FIVE-STAR WEEKEND by Elin Hilderbrand, and I have not read even one page of it. Yes, guilt is creeping in. I also am more than ready to read Shari Lapena's latest thriller, the aforementioned EVERYONE HERE IS LYING. I call Shari's books “a one-sit read” since I do not move once I start reading them.
The weather is supposed to be spectacular, so I am planning to spend a lot of time outside in the “Cleopatra” tent reading and floating in the pool.
Read on, and have a great week.

CROOK MANIFESTO by Colson Whitehead (Historical Fiction)

1971. Ray Carney’s days moving stolen goods are over. It’s strictly the straight-and-narrow for him --- until he needs Jackson 5 tickets for his daughter and decides to hit up his old police contact Munson. But Munson has his own favors to ask of Carney. 1973. Pepper is Carney’s endearingly violent partner in crime who takes on a side gig doing security on a Blaxploitation shoot in Harlem. He finds himself in a freaky world of Hollywood stars, up-and-coming comedians, celebrity drug dealers, hustlers, mobsters and hit men. 1976. Carney's wife, Elizabeth, is campaigning for her childhood friend, the former assistant D.A. and rising politician Alexander Oakes. LITTLE MONSTERS by Adrienne Brodeur,
THE BETTER HALF by Alli Frank and Asha Youmans,
and HER, TOO by Bonnie Kistler
LITTLE MONSTERS by Adrienne Brodeur (Fiction)
I heard Adrienne Brodeur talk about LITTLE MONSTERS at a pre-publication event, and I knew from her presentation that I wanted to read it. It’s set in the summer of 2016 on Cape Cod, an area that she knows and loves. This place is as much a character in the book as the Gardner family whom we meet. The setting alone makes it work as a summer read.
Adam Gardner is reluctantly retiring at the age of 70, even though he still wants to make one more discovery with the whales he loves. His son, Ken, is angling his chances to run for a congressional seat. He has enlisted his wife, Jenny, in this quest. She is the perfect spouse of a candidate, but is this who she wants to be? And oh, she has a wee bit of a drinking problem. Ken’s sister, Abby, is an artist who is very much coming into her own. Her brother has more control over her life than she would like. She’s also best friends with Jenny, which means they know a lot about each other’s lives before and after Jenny married Ken --- and there is a lot to stay buried there, too.

THE BETTER HALF by Alli Frank and Asha Youmans (Romantic Comedy)
Once again, Alli Frank and Asha Youmans hit it out of the park with their third novel together, THE BETTER HALF, which has both heart and soul. At 43, Nina Morgan Clarke has arrived. She is the first Black headmaster of the very tony Royal-Hawkins School, which is mostly populated by students of wealthy white parents. She has a tolerable relationship with her ex-husband, and her daughter is on the east coast at a private school. Before she embarks on this new role, she goes on vacation with her best and longtime friend, Marisol. On that trip, she meets a man to whom she has an instant attraction and comes home with a challenge that will complicate her life.

HER, TOO by Bonnie Kistler (Psychological/Legal Thriller)
In HER, TOO, just as she did in THE CAGE, Bonnie Kistler puts the action right up front. Kelly McCann is a fighter. She defends men who are accused of sex crimes, and she has a winning record. While it feels like she is a traitor to women, this role has made her very successful. She commands a large salary. She has a lot at home to protect, so she needs the money. But then, on the night of one of her biggest victories, she is sexually assaulted. From there, the tables are turned. The way that she was so proactive about her defense is how she is when she joins with other victims to get revenge.
