I have been juggling two books this week --- and I am enjoying both immensely.
The first is HOMECOMING by Kate Morton, which is now in stores. I am about 100 pages in, and I am completely swept up in the story. I interviewed Kate years ago, and she told me that place is always the thing that she imagines first when she is writing a book. And once again, she writes vividly about it in this book. As the pandemic started, she headed from London to Australia with her husband and three boys. They had planned a vacation there, but once they arrived, they quarantined for two weeks and decided to stay there, living on a small farm. She immediately felt drawn to a new story just from being in this place.
I heard Kate interviewed the other night, and once again she spoke about how she loves beautiful places and writing about them. If you follow her on Instagram, you will have an idea of what captures her eye. She takes some breathtaking photos. We will have our review next week, and if I can, I will schedule an interview with Kate. So far in our poll, this is the book that you are most looking forward to reading in April. And you are so right!
Megan Miranda has been a favorite writer of mine for a long time. The premise of THE ONLY SURVIVORS (on sale April 11th) quickly drew me in. Picture this: Years ago, a group of students survived a horrific accident. Bonding over this, they decided to meet each year at a house on the Outer Banks to reminisce and spend time with each other. Before their 10th meetup, one of the group members has died, and over this weekend another goes missing. Megan writes suspense so well. I feel the setting, and I am betting on who will go missing. She is kicking off a really big tour next week, but when there is a lull in the action, I hope to interview her. We also will share our review with you next week.
My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Rachel Beanland, who I chatted with back in 2020 about her debut novel, FLORENCE ADLER SWIMS FOREVER. Her second work of historical fiction, THE HOUSE IS ON FIRE, is now in stores and will be a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to catch up with her. This latest novel reimagines what happened in the Richmond Theater Fire of 1811 through the eyes of four characters.
Our lively conversation includes Rachel sharing why she selected these people to represent the story and her feelings about each of them. She also explains how this story came to her --- and how she headed down the rabbit hole to research it. The pandemic prevented her from writing a different book, which would have required more research, so she was lucky to have this story to explore near her Richmond home. The back of the book includes some of her reference material for further reading. THE HOUSE IS ON FIRE would be perfect for a book group discussion. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast.
We have our review this week from Rebecca Munro, who says, “With its unpacking of a real-life tragedy and beautifully rendered, complex characters, THE HOUSE IS ON FIRE is the very best that historical fiction has to offer: a riveting investigation of a dark period in our nation’s history and a championing of the voices most often silenced.... Tautly written and sensitively told, this is a masterwork from an author as compassionate as she is thorough.” Don’t miss my Bets On commentary later this month.
A comedy writer thinks she has sworn off love, until a dreamy pop star flips the script on all her assumptions, in Curtis Sittenfeld’s new novel, ROMANTIC COMEDY, which is this month’s Reese’s Book Club pick. Sittenfeld’s inspiration for the book was, of course, “Saturday Night Live,” which she embraced watching with her family during the pandemic. She says, “I wanted to write a novel that was, above all, fun. The last few years have been rough ones in big and small ways for just about all of us. That’s why I longed to escape to a fizzy, delicious, romance-filled parallel universe --- one that I could exist in while I was writing and share with you after I finished.”
Norah Piehl has our review and has this to say: “Where ROMANTIC COMEDY really shines is in the second part of its title and the first half of the book --- the lively, often very funny sections showcasing the hard work and creativity of Sally and her colleagues, and the breakneck pace it takes to pull together a live weekly show like this.... Sittenfeld is certainly adept at bringing us along with her characters through the use of swift pacing and breezy dialogue.”
Sally Hepworth’s new domestic thriller, THE SOULMATE, is about marriage, betrayal and the secrets that push us to the edge. Gabe and his wife, Pippa, live in a cottage on a cliff. But their dream home has become a popular spot for people to end their lives, and Gabe comes to their rescue night after night. Until he doesn’t. When Pippa discovers that Gabe knew the victim, major questions emerge. Did the victim jump? Was she pushed? Would Gabe, Pippa’s soulmate, lie?
According to our reviewer Pamela Kramer, “Hepworth is the master of misdirection as she cleverly causes us to believe one thing only to unveil the truth later. But she saves the biggest surprises, and the most touching ones, to the very end. How much will a woman put up with in the name of love? That is a question with enough depth to keep any book club talking well past the first bottle of wine.” I love Sally --- and I hope that MANY of you are able to meet her on her current tour in the States. She is visiting from Australia for two weeks.

It was announced this week that HANG THE MOON by Jeannette Walls, which we reviewed last week, is April’s Barnes & Noble Book Club selection (it also is Simon & Schuster’s Book Club Favorites pick for this month). This riveting novel from the bestselling author of THE GLASS CASTLE is about an indomitable young woman in Virginia during Prohibition.
On Tuesday, May 9th at 3pm ET, Barnes & Noble will host a live virtual event with Jeannette. She will be joined in the discussion by Shannon DeVito, the Sr. Director of Book Strategy and Customer Experience at B&N, and Miwa Messer, B&N’s Editorial Director. Click here to sign up.
Jenna Bush Hager has selected CAMP ZERO by debut novelist Michelle Min Sterling as this month’s “Read with Jenna” Today Show Book Club pick. In a near-future northern settlement, the fates of a young woman, a professor and a mysterious collective of climate researchers collide. Jenna says, “It is action-packed. I read it so fast. My sister did, too. You are going to love it…. You’ve never been anywhere like the world Michelle created. That’s one of the things I love about reading. It’ll take you to places you’ve never traveled.”
April’s “Good Morning America” Book Club pick is DIRTY LAUNDRY, Disha Bose’s debut novel. Here’s how “GMA” describes the book: “The novel centers on Ciara Dunphy, who appears to have it all…until she's found murdered and the pristine facade comes crumbling down. Ciara's best friend Mishti Guha, a mother ‘different’ from the others in Ciara's tight-knit circle, and Lauren Doyle, a mother who finds herself at the butt of most jokes, become unlikely allies. It seems like everyone has something to gain from Ciara's murder. In order to avoid blame, friends turn to foes and begin to air each other's dirty laundry.”

Cheryl wrote, “Thanks, Carol, for keeping us updated on movies and TV shows. I appreciate your recommendations as I am always looking for engaging shows to watch.” I am so happy that you enjoy them!
Ann wrote, “Thanks for sending me the link to Allison Pataki’s 'Bookaccino Live' Book Group event. I just finished watching it, and now I will have to get the book. My book group just discussed THE MAGNOLIA PALACE last week. We now all want to go to the Frick Mansion once it is open again after remodeling, which will take two years. We will be signing up for Kristin Hannah's event. She is one of my favorite authors.”
Caren wrote, “I just wanted to thank you so much for the ARC of THE HOUSE OF LINCOLN by Nancy Horan. I’ve been sick in the hospital with a bad infection, and when I was released, I came home to find the book in my mailbox. What a real treat and a huge pick-me-up! I am feeling better, and I am on the mend. Now I’m going to spend my recovery time reading. Right now I’m reading a Louise Penny book, but just as soon as I’m finished, I’m going to read THE HOUSE OF LINCOLN. I loved LOVING FRANK.”
I did not watch anything new this week. It was one of those super hectic weeks where I found myself finishing up a few series that I had started. And, oh yes, basketball! I called UConn right!
On Tuesday night, I will be attending a premiere event for “The Last Thing He Told Me” at the 92nd Street Y. I am looking forward to hearing Laura Dave, Josh Singer (Laura’s husband and the winner of the Academy Award for writing Spotlight) and Jennifer Garner talk about the show --- and then catching a look at the first episode. Yes, I will report back on this.
On Thursday, I will be heading to the Hamptons with Lisa Hickman, our Contest Coordinator, for the aforementioned Hamptons Whodunit. I am going to be cramming for my three panels! And I will be figuring out what to wear, especially since the temperatures can be all over the place during this time of year.
We will be celebrating Easter here this weekend. I have been looking for ideas of what to make and bake. Cory and Kaltrina are coming over tomorrow night, and I will enlist them for some decorating and planning. Cory is making Carrot Ginger Soup, and he is baking cupcakes that I plan to turn into Easter baskets. I sent him the cupcake wrappers that I want him to use that look like grass baskets. He thinks I am a bit insane to have done this, but he is taking that in stride. Oh, what a wise son he is. I also bought mini cupcake wrappers for corn bread with a different design. Tom keeps insisting that we make a grocery list. Does he not yet understand that I still am formulating the menu? I mean, after all these years, you think he would figure that out.
Oh, and it is Masters weekend. So on top of everything else, I will be making pimento cheese sandwiches on Saturday, with enough left over for hors d'oeuvres on Sunday. I know, I know...I keep telling my husband that I am Wife of the Year. He agrees! Even when I do not have the grocery list ready.
Happy Easter and Happy Passover to those who are celebrating.
Read on, and have a really great week.

It’s the height of the winter social season, the General Assembly is in session, and many of Virginia’s gentleman planters, along with their wives and children, have made the long and arduous journey to the capital. At the city’s only theater, the Charleston-based Placide & Green Company puts on two plays a night to meet the demand of a populace that’s done looking for enlightenment at the front of a church. On the night after Christmas, the theater is packed with more than 600 holiday revelers. When it goes up in flames in the middle of the performance, four theatergoers make a series of split-second decisions that will affect not only their own lives but those of countless others. Bookreporter.com Bets On: LOYALTY by Lisa Scottoline
LOYALTY by Lisa Scottoline (Historical Fiction)
In LOYALTY, Lisa Scottoline takes us to Sicily in the 1800s where the Mafia was born. The Mafia was originally organized to offer protection from those who were trying to hijack lemon crops on their way to market. But this quickly became more criminal and radical, as the “price” to protect crops spilled into other businesses. And the idea of “the family” was born. Lisa brings us inside Sicily at this time, sharing a story through the eyes of four characters. One will be the head of “the family”; another will be cast from her village; a shepherd, who is a Jew, will lose his flock, and a lawyer will look for justice for a boy who was kidnapped. Once you start reading, you will wonder how these disparate characters will come together.

A FEVER IN THE HEARTLAND: The Ku Klux Klan's Plot to Take Over America, and the Woman Who Stopped Them by Timothy Egan (History)
Audiobook available, read by Timothy Egan
The Roaring Twenties has been characterized as a time of Gatsby frivolity. But it was also the height of the uniquely American hate group, the Ku Klux Klan. Their domain was not the old Confederacy, but the Heartland and the West. They hated Blacks, Jews, Catholics and immigrants in equal measure, and took radical steps to keep these people from the American promise. And the man who set in motion their takeover of great swaths of America was a charismatic charlatan named D.C. Stephenson. Stephenson was a magnetic presence whose life story changed with every telling. But at the peak of his influence, it was a seemingly powerless woman --- Madge Oberholtzer --- who would reveal his secret cruelties, and whose deathbed testimony finally brought the Klan to their knees. THE REAL WORK: On the Mystery of Mastery by Adam Gopnik (Essays)
Audiobook available, read by Adam Gopnik
For decades now, Adam Gopnik has been one of our most beloved writers, a brilliantly perceptive critic of art, food, France and more. But recently, he became obsessed by a more fundamental matter: How do masters learn their miraculous skill, whether it was drawing a museum-ready nude or baking a perfect sourdough loaf? How could anyone become so good at anything? There seemed to be a fundamental mystery to mastery. Was it possible to unravel it? In THE REAL WORK --- the term magicians use for the accumulated craft that makes for a great trick --- Gopnik becomes a dedicated student of several masters of their craft. Rejecting self-help bromides and bullet points, he nevertheless shows that the top people in any field share a set of common qualities and methods. Reviewed by Harvey Freedenberg.

LITTLE POISON: Paul Runyan, Sam Snead, and a Long-Shot Upset at the 1938 PGA Championship by Jonh Dechant (Sports/Biography)
Paul Runyan --- the Arkansas farm boy who stood 5'6" and weighed 130 pounds --- shocked the golf world by defeating long and lean, sweet-swinging Sam Snead in the finals of the 1938 PGA Championship, thus earning the nickname “Little Poison.” Runyan did more than beat Snead: he shellacked him as decisively as David toppled mighty Goliath. His resounding victory was so convincing, so dominant, that even Snead had to shake his head when it was finished and wonder how the porkpie-wearing, pint-sized golf pro had gotten the better of him in the 36-hole final. LITTLE POISON is the story of a man who made a career out of punching above his weight on the golf course. Reviewed by Stuart Shiffman.
