This weekend, an arctic chill is sweeping through the New York area and most of the country. The way it is being reported on the news, it’s like this is happening during the summer. It’s winter, folks! It’s supposed to be cold. When it's warm, it's an anomaly. Snow in Texas? Well, yes, that is something out of the ordinary, especially when it shuts down the airport. But here? It’s supposed to be cold. The other day, it was reported that we were at the longest stretch of time where there was no snow in Central Park. And finally the flurries that fell on Wednesday counted. Whew, one less thing to worry about!
My life goes a lot better when I am organized! Right now, my office has piles of papers, books, and um…lots of yarn. Also, last week I grabbed a glass of water on my desk. It tipped and spilled just a few tablespoons of water right into my cigar box-sized desktop. It worked for a few moments and then, poof, it started shooting an evil amber light. So I need to order a new one. The one that I am looking at can be tethered to the back of a monitor. If I had that already, this debacle would not have happened. My monitors are all mounted off the desk, too. Live and learn that a regular warranty does not cover water damage --- that is accidental insurance. And of course, I JUST paid to extend the regular warranty!
Let me just say that my version of Mercury retrograde seems to have gone right through January. I am joking that “the year that was January has now ended.”
I read THE HOUSE OF EVE by Sadeqa Johnson last weekend, and it was so well done. Her last book, YELLOW WIFE, was a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection, and this one will be as well. The idea for the story came to Sadeqa from something that happened in her own family. Sadeqa's grandmother got pregnant with Sadeqa's mother at age 14. But it wasn't until Sadeqa's mother was in the third grade that she learned the truth --- that her mother was not just another family member, but was in fact her mother. This got Sadeqa to think about what it would have been like to be a young pregnant woman at that time. She plays it through beautifully with story, not hardcore messaging. I will have more on why I loved it in the weeks to come, but I will share that Sadeqa cleverly tied the two books together. It’s in stores on Tuesday.
Also out on Tuesday is THE HOUSE GUEST by Hank Phillippi Ryan, an upcoming Bets On pick that we have just added to our Winter Reading feature. I have been following Hank’s career as a writer for a long time, and this is her best book to date.
Alyssa Macallan’s husband has left her. And suddenly her very posh and elegant lifestyle is being tugged away from her. For the moment she still has the house, actually two of them, but all the other trappings of a cushy lifestyle are vanishing. As she hits a low, she meets Bree Lorrance, a woman who is in a dangerous relationship. In an altruistic sweep, Alyssa offers Bree a room in her guest house. But who’s really in the guest house? And what can these two do together to solve their problems? Twists and turns ensue.
I will be interviewing Hank in a couple of weeks and look forward to sharing that conversation with you.
Today we kicked off a special contest for THINGS I WISH I TOLD MY MOTHER by Susan Patterson and Susan DiLallo, which releases on April 10th and will be a Bets On pick. This is a really fun book.
Laurie is an artist and a collector of experiences. She travels the world with a worn beige duffel bag. “Dr. Liz,” Laurie’s mother, is an elegant perfectionist who travels the world with a matched set of suitcases. A dream vacation to Paris will bring an unexpected sparkle to Liz’s eyes. The scenes in Paris, with the meals and the shopping, are wonderful. The meeting of extended family when they head to Norway unpacks some secrets. This is lovely armchair travel. And the ending has a twist.
We’re awarding an advance copy of the book to 50 readers and giving them the chance to share their comments about it with us. To win means that you are committed to reading THINGS I WISH I TOLD MY MOTHER and giving us your feedback on it by Friday, March 31st. If you can do this, please fill out this form by Friday, February 17th at noon ET.
Also, I will be talking to Susan Patterson and Susan DiLallo in April, and the winners will have the option of submitting a question that they would like me to ask them. From all the questions we receive, I will select a number of them to ask during the interview, which will be available as a video and podcast the week that the book releases.
Out this week is EXILES, the final installment in Jane Harper’s series starring investigator Aaron Falk, following THE DRY and FORCE OF NATURE. One year ago, at a busy town festival on a warm spring night, a woman vanished into the crowd and no one has seen her since. Now, as Falk looks into the case, long-held secrets and resentments begin to surface --- and secrets that show that the community is not as close as it appears.
Katherine B. Weissman has this to say in her review: “Harper is very good at casting a wide and subtle net of suspicion, and it wasn’t until fewer than 100 pages from the end, when the point of view temporarily shifts from Falk to that of other characters, that I began to suspect the truth…. Figuring out what happened to Kim is not the only suspenseful aspect of EXILES; you’ll also be engaged by Falk’s decision about where to take his life. Over three books, I’ve become very fond of this smart, unpretentious fellow. I’m so glad Harper decided to give him a chance at love.”
I loved EXILES so much that it will be a Bets On selection. Don’t miss my commentary in next week’s newsletter, along with my interview with Jane. I will be talking to her on Monday and am looking forward to our conversation. Oh, and the first Aaron Falk book, THE DRY, was turned into a movie. We watched it the other night on Showtime, and it was terrific. Eric Bana, who starred in THE DRY, will be returning as Falk in the upcoming adaptation of FORCE OF NATURE.
Winter Reading Update
We gave away five copies of EXILES in this week’s Winter Reading contest. Next week’s prize book will be another Bets On pick, REEF ROAD by Deborah Goodrich Royce, which we featured in two previous newsletters in January. The contest for it will go live on Tuesday, February 7th at noon ET.
February’s “Read with Jenna” Today Show Book Club pick is MAAME. Jessica George’s much-talked-about debut novel deals with the themes of our time with humor and poignancy: from familial duty and racism, to female pleasure, the complexity of love and the life-saving power of friendship. According to Jenna, the voice “felt singular and interesting --- raw and new. I just couldn't believe the author’s talent and the range of emotions I felt while reading it. On one page I was crying, yet on another page, I laughed hysterically.”
Norah Piehl has our review and says, “Maddie experiences microaggressions in her job, in her friendships and in her nascent attempts at romance. She tries to figure out how to navigate her place in the world while also struggling with depression and doubts about sexual desire. Readers will be rooting for her to find the strength to advocate for herself in the workplace, with her family and in her romantic relationships --- and to finally be seen as herself rather than as a role or stereotype.” I am reading MAAME now, and I feel like Jessica has me entrenched in Maddie's head.
Enter Our New Word of Mouth Contest
MAAME is one of our current Word of Mouth prizes; the other is the aforementioned THE HOUSE OF EVE by Sadeqa Johnson, which we will review next week. Let us know by Friday, February 17th at noon ET what books you’ve read, and you’ll have a chance to win both these titles.
Soon no one on Earth will have a place to hide in Dean Koontz’s latest thriller, THE HOUSE AT THE END OF THE WORLD, which is all about fears known and unknown. Katie lives alone in a fortresslike stone house on Jacob’s Ladder island. Once a rising star in the art world, she finds refuge in her painting. The neighboring island of Ringrock houses a secret: a government research facility. And now two agents have arrived on Jacob’s Ladder in search of someone --- or something --- they refuse to identify.
We have two reviews of the book to share with you. Ray Palen says, “After some recent forays into pure science fiction and otherworldly subject matter, it is refreshing to see Koontz take a page out of his old and highly successful blueprint and bring us a novel that easily can stack up against his earlier work.” And according to Pamela Kramer, “[W]hile there is often an overwhelming sense of doom in [Koontz's] novels, there is also a silver lining in the dark and looming fog that shows us a hopeful light. This story of good versus evil gives us a lot to consider.”

RIVER SING ME HOME by debut novelist Eleanor Shearer is February’s “Good Morning America” Book Club selection. Here’s how “GMA” describes it: “The book follows a mother in the early 1800s, Rachel, and her powerful journey across the Caribbean to find her stolen children in the aftermath of slavery. It offers a look at the ambiguities of British emancipation which left slaves tied to their masters for many years. Are any of Rachel’s five children still alive? This question burns as the mother discovers what happened to each of her children, their differing experiences illuminating a little-understood time of Caribbean history.”
This month’s Barnes & Noble Book Club pick is THE SNOW HARE by Paula Lichtarowicz. Lena has lived a long, quiet life on her farm in Wales with her husband and child. But as her end approaches, buried memories begin to return. Of her childhood in Poland, and her passion for science. Of the early days of her marriage, reluctant wife to an army officer. Of the birth of her daughter, whose arrival changed everything. Memories less welcome return, too. Her Polish village, transformed overnight by the Soviets, and the war that doomed her entire family to the frigid work camps of the Siberian tundra. And buried in that blinding snow, amongst the darkness of survival, the most haunting memory of all: that of an extraordinary new love.
On Tuesday, March 14th at 3:30pm ET, B&N will host a live virtual event with Paula Lichtarowicz to talk about the book. She will be joined in the discussion by Shannon DeVito, the Director of Category Management at B&N, and Miwa Messer, B&N’s Editorial Director. You can sign up by clicking here.

Reader Mail:
Debby wrote to me about my debacle of not finding a mix for marble cake: “I’m sure you’ve heard from many readers concerning the cake mix. It’s quite easy to make your own. Use a yellow or white cake mix, add some cocoa powder mix to the batter, and swirl through the batter in the pans. Does that sound doable?” It does, and that is what we will do next time!
Roxanne wrote, “Thank you for making Nita Prose's interview available for those who couldn't make the live interview. She was delightful!” We agree. It was a terrific evening. Oh, and we also added the podcast this week!
Brad Meltzer on “CBS Sunday Morning” talking about THE NAZI CONSPIRACY: Here's a terrific segment about Meltzer's fascinating book with Josh Mensch, which tells the little-known true story of a Nazi plot to kill FDR, Joseph Stalin and Winston Churchill at the height of World War II.
CrimeReads: In this piece, Paul Levine talks about book characters who do not age.
“Dear Edward” on Apple TV+: Based on the novel by Ann Napolitano, this series starts airing tonight.
“1923” on Paramount+: It is back this weekend and has been renewed for another season.
“Shrinking” on Apple TV+: Harrison Ford and Jason Segel play shrinks. Quite a combo.
“Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice” on HBO Max: This is from 2019, but we missed it then, and it's worth watching. It's a terrific documentary about Linda Ronstadt's life as she stares down the tribulations of Parkinson’s. We did not realize how much she had done musically through the years.
“Succession” on HBO: It's back on March 26th: Here’s the trailer.
Shotgun Wedding on Amazon Prime Video: You know how I tell you what to watch? This is a skip for me, except for the scenes with Jennifer Coolidge as J Lo's mother-in-law. She is funny. It just needed more of her!
With the forecast of a cold weekend ahead, my goal is to pick up some more firewood and grab some couch time for reading. I have heard that seasoned wood is available for sale at our local firehouse. This is perfect, and also a bit humorous --- firewood at the firehouse! We are having dinner with my dad tomorrow night, and Tom is planning to make a Beef Stracotto, which is terrific. I am lucky that he loves to cook as much as me. Oh, and I am loving our organized pantry. Now it's time to get my office organized. A reminder that receipts from 2015 can be shredded. We no longer need them for tax purposes. Well, there’s tinder for the fireplace!
Read on, and have a great week.

WACO: David Koresh, the Branch Davidians, and a Legacy of Rage by Jeff Guinn (True Crime)
Audiobook available, read by Jacques Roy
Jeff Guinn has penned the definitive account of the disastrous siege at the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas. For the first time in 30 years, more than a dozen former ATF agents who participated in the initial February 28, 1993, raid speak on the record about the poor decisions of their commanders that led to this deadly confrontation. Revelations in this book include why the FBI chose to end the siege with the use of CS gas; how both ATF and FBI officials tried and failed to cover up their agencies’ mistakes; where David Koresh plagiarized his infamous prophecies; and direct links between the Branch Davidian tragedy and the modern militia movement in America.
