I feel like I am living in a mystery novel. One of our silver steak knives is missing. A few weeks ago, something triggered my looking where we have the silver carefully stored, and one knife was gone. I am not sure why it took me until two weeks ago to figure this out. And I am not sure exactly when it went missing. After years of just using “the good stuff” for holidays, I decided to enjoy it on many more occasions. So just when it slipped away, I am not sure! Could it be with the Easter lamb? What did I serve for Mother’s Day? Was it the Father’s Day steak? Was it for a Saturday or Sunday dinner?
A couple of weeks ago, the missing knife led me to head to Replacements.com to order some crystal and china pieces that have chipped or been broken along the way. When I bought these patterns as a young bride, I scoffed at the idea of open stock and chose pieces that were limited, so searching for replacements has been challenging. I was lucky enough to find what I needed and also to purchase some “extras.” But I still think that the knife, which I do hope is “open stock,” is here somewhere, so we only have 11 for the moment. Also, who knew that there was more than one variety of steak knife in this pattern? I am 99% sure that I will order the wrong one, thus the search does go on.
Last weekend, we had a fabulous time in Charleston. Our friend, Cathy, has a condo on Daniel Island with a stunning view (which you can see above) and is decorated brilliantly, sharing pieces that she had when she lived here along with new ones. We loved exploring her new neighborhood and downtown Charleston. We took a carriage ride tour and learned that there are six possible routes. You never know which you are going to go on. If we did this again, I would have fingers double crossed for a different ride, though I know each driver will have his own story to narrate.
We both enjoyed the afternoon event at the Charleston Literary Festival where Betsy Prioleau and Tina Brown spoke, while my husband Tom went off on his own adventure. Afterwards we each bought a book, though Cathy noted that she wished both e-books and audiobooks could be purchased with proceeds going to Buxton Books, the local bookseller. With e-books and audio gaining in popularity, it feels like there is a missed opportunity if those sales cannot be part of these festival book buys.
The weather was unseasonably warm, so we even clocked some pool time! As Cathy was reading Betsy’s book, DIAMONDS AND DEADLINES, she said she missed the opportunity to click on a word to get a definition, which is easily triggered reading an e-book. It's very interesting to hear another reader share her experience. We brought the audio and e-book ideas to Polly and Julian Buxton, who own Buxton Books, as Betsy invited all of us to a lovely dinner last Saturday night. We had walked over to the bookstore after the program and enjoyed seeing its well-curated tables and shelves. From other authors, I know that Polly has pulled together some wonderful events and programs.
Betsy and her husband live in a stunning house that was built in 1745, so I got to experience old and new Charleston in one visit. We had a brilliantly fun evening talking books, the Festival and life. And speaking of pools, Betsy showed me hers, which is tucked into the back of their beautiful garden (Meyer lemons, anyone?).
The weekend sped by all too quickly, but we will be back!
For our latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jamie Fiore Higgins about her memoir, BULLY MARKET: My Story of Money and Misogyny at Goldman Sachs, which is a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick. Jamie explains what drove her to join Goldman Sachs in the late ’90s and the obstacles she faced as she started her career. She shares details about the demands of the job and the cost of her success.
As both her marriage and mental health were tested, Jamie made plans to leave the company, creating a “spreadsheet of freedom” to calculate the moment “she would have enough financial security to quit.” As she moved on from Goldman, she discusses how she worked to redefine herself. We also talk about how the book has been resonating with book groups --- including mine (we all loved it!) --- and what they have been reacting to. LAPD detective Renée Ballard and Harry Bosch team up to hunt the brutal killer who is Bosch’s “white whale” --- a man responsible for the murder of an entire family --- in Michael Connelly’s latest thriller, DESERT STAR.
According to Ray Palen, the book “represents classic Michael Connelly storytelling and is a joy to read from cover to cover. Any opportunity to spend time with Harry Bosch is always worthwhile. He never disappoints his loyal readers, who recognize him as one of the finest detectives gracing the pages of modern-day thriller fiction.” Michael did an event at The Poisoned Pen Bookstore that you can watch here.
In Lisa Unger’s chilling new locked-room thriller, SECLUDED CABIN SLEEPS SIX, three couples rent a luxury cabin in the woods for a weekend getaway. But it won’t take long for this dreamy weekend to turn into a nightmare.
Ray Palen calls the book “a satisfying read that digs deeply into the secrets that affect how family members deal with one another. Trust that Unger and her masterful plotting will reward you in the end as these secrets bubble up to the surface, and no one will be safe from them.” SECLUDED CABIN SLEEPS SIX will be a Bets On pick; don’t miss my commentary in next week’s newsletter.
Clare Mackintosh is back with her latest novel, THE LAST PARTY, a delicious blend of police procedural and psychological thriller about the homicide of a local celebrity in small-town Wales --- a man everyone in the village had good cause to murder.
Here’s a sneak peek at Ray Palen’s review: “Clare Mackintosh’s debut novel, I LET YOU GO, featured a twist that I never saw coming and literally rocked my world.... THE LAST PARTY, her latest book, is an immensely satisfying psychological thriller. It possesses not a single major twist but rather an endless series of small revelations that will keep readers guessing right up to the last page.” I am reading this book now and loving the way it has me twisting and turning. I will be interviewing Clare next week and am so looking forward to this!

Reader Mail:
Diane wrote, “Have a wonderful SC weekend. I laughed about your numerous waxed amaryllis purchases. I purchased several from Costco mail order in October. The photo above shows the growth in two weeks. Some friends have received early Thanksgiving gifts already.”
Janice wrote, “The bulbs encased in wax are available now at Lowe's Home Center. I don’t know if there is one near you. They have plenty and make great gifts for friends who aren’t gardeners or, as the saying goes, can kill a cactus!”
Kevin Wilson: The author of NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO PANIC was on “Today with Hoda & Jenna” this week, and he talked about the origin of the title.
“The Crown” on Netflix: We are a mere three episodes into season five as I am watching with my husband. He exercises restraint while I personify the word “binge.” That said, I think we will finish it this weekend.
“Yellowstone” on Paramount: It's back on Sunday night with a two-episode kickoff. I hope to hear the line “take the chopper.”
I hope that everyone in the path of Nicole fared well. We had lots of rain here today. November storms are rare, but they do pack a powerful punch!
We need an electrician to run a new 220 line for the eagerly anticipated hot tub. He was available while we were away. Fingers crossed that we hear from him again as I am more than ready to enjoy this. Guests expected for Thanksgiving are packing bathing suits.
I have made a list of house projects that need to be done. You can just imagine how excited Tom is about this idea. Picture eye-rolling. The thought of holiday entertaining somehow has triggered fall cleaning for me. A couple of weeks ago, I packed up a bag of barely worn clothing that does not fit (and, being honest with myself, will not fit again) and shipped it off to Athleta as part of their thredUP initiative. In turn, I will get a credit for the store. Terrific idea!
To all the veterans among our readers, we thank you for your service.
Read on, and have a great week.

Audiobook available; read by Christine Lakin, Peter Giles and Titus Welliver
A year has passed since LAPD detective Renée Ballard quit the force. But after the chief of police himself tells her she can write her own ticket within the department, Ballard takes back her badge, leaving “the Late Show” to rebuild and lead the cold case unit at the elite Robbery-Homicide Division. For years, Harry Bosch has been working a case that haunts him --- the murder of an entire family by a psychopath who still walks free. Ballard makes Bosch an offer: come volunteer as an investigator in her new Open-Unsolved Unit, and he can pursue his “white whale” with the resources of the LAPD behind him. MAD HONEY by Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan
and COUNT THE WAYS by Joyce Maynard
MAD HONEY by Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan (Fiction)
MAD HONEY had its origins in a very different way. In 2017, Jennifer Finney Boylan had a dream that she wrote a book with Jodi Picoult, and she tweeted about it. Jodi got wind of this and said, “Let’s do it.” Previously her only co-writer was her daughter, Samantha van Leer. What Jodi and Jennifer created together is a novel that takes on an issue as Jodi’s books are wont to do. At the same time, it blends in experiences that Jennifer knows all too well as she is transgender. Told in alternating narratives, we get to know these characters, yet we do not see from the start exactly how they will impact one another.

COUNT THE WAYS by Joyce Maynard (Fiction)
Every time I read a book by Joyce Maynard, I find myself remembering the characters for a very long time. This is exactly what happened when I read COUNT THE WAYS. It came out in hardcover last year, and I had every intention of reading it then. But life got in the way, so I read it this fall in anticipation of interviewing Joyce. It was billed as her most ambitious novel to date, and indeed it is. The themes that I have come to love in her books are there --- family in all its messiness.
