While I truly love where we live, there is a part of me that would like to live in Colorado, Wyoming or Montana, or somewhere else where there are mountains and lots of sky. So I enjoyed seeing Lee Child and his brother, Andrew Child, being interviewed on “CBS Saturday Morning” last weekend. They were in Wyoming where they have ranches near each other; Lee’s is on 35 acres, and Andrew’s is a mile away. They also have bought a town out there. I believe the segment was shot at Andrew’s house, as his wife posted a photo of the shoot on social media a few weeks ago. As I was watching, there was a pillow with a buffalo on it over the interviewer’s shoulder. We have the same one --- one of my many little odes to the west here at the house. Yes, this humored me, so I had to share it!
My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Thrity Umrigar, whose 10th book, HONOR, is a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick that is now available in paperback. I first read Thrity’s novel, THE SPACE BETWEEN US, back in 2006, which made a big impression on me. The same can be said of HONOR.
Thrity talks about the reporting that Ellen Berry did for the New York Times that drew her to want to tell the story of Smita, an Indian-born reporter who has been asked to cover the trial of two brothers in India. They have been charged with killing the husband of their sister, Meena, who in the wake of this tragedy has been horrifically burned. The reason for the crime? Meena’s family is Hindu, and her husband was Muslim. In this village, such merging of cultures is unacceptable. Thrity talks about the difference between life in the city and the smaller villages. She also shares that she always sees a story right from the start and parses it out as she writes.
And before you feel that this interview was all intellectual, do note that I confess to watching both “Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives” and “Indian Matchmaking” on Netflix. Thrity chides me about it! Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast.
This Month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group Event
Last night, we hosted a “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event featuring Joyce Maynard. Not only did she talk about her latest novel, COUNT THE WAYS (now out in paperback), she also shared her excitement over the sequel to the book, which she is currently writing. Joyce even encouraged our attendees to write in the chat what they would like to see happen in the sequel. She loves receiving feedback like this from her readers, and we happily will be sending all of their comments to her!
It just so happens that yesterday marked the release of an e-book original from Joyce, THE INFLUENCER, an Amazon short story that she talked about during the event. Insta-fame has deadly repercussions in this dark tale of psychological suspense. It’s available as a download on Amazon Singles for $1.99 (and it’s free if you’re an Amazon Prime or Kindle Unlimited subscriber). Click here for more plot details and to download it now!
A couple of our readers appeared on camera to ask Joyce questions about the book, and then we opened up the Q&A to the rest of our viewing audience. It was a lovely evening, and we look forward to sharing the event with you next week. The video will be up on our YouTube channel, and the podcast will appear on our Videos & Podcasts page.
I am happy to announce that Charmaine Wilkerson will be our next “Bookaccino Live” Book Group guest. The event will be held on Wednesday, November 30th at 8pm ET, and you can sign up for it here. We will be talking about Charmaine’s debut novel, BLACK CAKE --- a New York Times bestseller, a “Read with Jenna” Today Show Book Club pick, and a Bets On selection when it came out in hardcover earlier this year. The timing here is perfect as the paperback releases the day before the event.
Just as we did last night, there will be a two-part Q&A session after I talk to Charmaine. For the first part, those who are asking a question “on camera” will be featured. This includes spending time with Charmaine backstage in our virtual green room before the show starts. If you would like to ask your question "live on screen" this way, please email it to me using the subject line “Black Cake.” For those who are camera shy, there will be a traditional Q&A segment as well.
For many, Cormac McCarthy’s long-awaited two-volume Passenger series is the literary event of the year. The first installment, THE PASSENGER, released this week and is McCarthy’s first novel since 2006’s THE ROAD. It’s the story of a salvage diver --- haunted by loss and afraid of the deep waters --- who is pursued for a conspiracy beyond his understanding, and longing for a death he cannot reconcile with God. The follow-up, STELLA MARIS, releases on December 6th. It’s an intimate portrait of grief and longing as a young woman in a psychiatric facility seeks to understand her own existence.
Joe Hartlaub, our Senior Writer Emeritus, is such a huge fan of McCarthy and his work that he felt compelled to briefly come out of retirement and review these two titles for us, which we are just thrilled about! Both books lived up to his lofty expectations, as you can tell from these review blurbs:
THE PASSENGER: “THE PASSENGER is worthy of becoming your favorite new literary drug, a multifaceted jewel of a book that will keep you up all night reading and thinking…. “[T]he first volume of this major work is required and unforgettable reading that will make you even more impatient to encounter its companion.”
STELLA MARIS: “I certainly don’t recall ever encountering anything quite as deep, dark and complex as this book and THE PASSENGER. You may need to give up your favorite author for a while simply to avoid comparing your next reading experience too harshly against this sprawling and disturbing work, which at the end of the day is nothing short of incomparable and not to be missed.”
The aforementioned Lee Child and Andrew Child have teamed up once again for the 27th installment of the Jack Reacher series. In NO PLAN B, a woman dies under the wheels of a moving bus. The death is ruled a suicide, but Jack Reacher saw what really happened. When another homicide is deemed an accident, he knows this is no coincidence. But Reacher is unaware that these crimes are part of something much larger and more far-reaching.
According to our reviewer Ray Palen, the book “has everything readers of a Jack Reacher novel could ever want --- chases, thrills, and a line of bodies in the wake of Reacher and his nearly unstoppable ability to tattoo his own brand of justice upon anyone who stands in the way of his focused goal.”
Word of Mouth Reminder
NO PLAN B is one of the prizes in our current Word of Mouth contest; the other is MY TRAVELS WITH MRS. KENNEDY by Clint Hill and Lisa McCubbin Hill. Submit your comments about the books you’ve read by Friday, November 4th at noon ET, and you’ll have a chance to win both these titles.
As we noted in last week’s newsletter, Oprah’s latest Book Club pick is Barbara Kingsolver’s new novel, DEMON COPPERHEAD. Many generations ago, Charles Dickens wrote DAVID COPPERFIELD from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damages to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for readers of this novel, but he provided its inspiration.
Our reviewer Jana Siciliano says, “The reader will connect to Demon in countless ways, but especially in his lack of agency. The book starts from the moment of his birth, and he offers his account without influencer-type victimization --- he just is, and this is his story. It is that truthful, matter-of-fact tone that reaches into the reader’s heart and mind and pulls out even more compassion than any Appalachian drug documentary could.”
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:
-
LIVID: In this 26th installment of Patricia Cornwell’s series featuring Dr. Kay Scarpetta, the chief medical examiner finds herself a reluctant star witness in a sensational televised murder trial causing chaos in Old Town Alexandria with the threat of violent protests.
-
THE REVOLUTIONARY: Pulitzer Prize–winning biographer Stacy Schiff has penned a revelatory biography of arguably the most essential Founding Father, the one who stood behind the change in thinking that produced the American Revolution: Samuel Adams.
-
THE SINGULARITIES: From revered Booker Prize-winning author John Banville comes a playful, multilayered novel of nostalgia, life and death, and quantum theory, which opens with the return of one of his most celebrated characters as he is released from prison.
-
ANYWHERE YOU RUN: After the murder of a white man in Jim Crow Mississippi, two Black sisters run away to different parts of the country. But can they escape the secrets they left behind? Find out in this new thriller from Wanda M. Morris, the award-winning author of ALL HER LITTLE SECRETS.

News & Pop Culture
Ina Garten on “60 Minutes”: I watched this terrific segment on Sunday night with Ina Garten. I am so looking forward to getting her new cookbook, GO-TO DINNERS.
The Good Nurse on Netflix: I watched this film last night about a male nurse who left a trail of dead patients at every hospital that he worked at. It is a tragedy that he got away with as much as he did. It stars Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain, and it is worth watching.
Icon Member at Athleta: Ah, there was a day when I would be happy to have gold status on United. Now I am thrilled to have Icon status at Athleta. And yes, it has something to do with how much shopping one does with the brand.
“House of the Dragon” on HBO: Tom and I are continuing to watch this. I still have no idea what is going on, and I ask him a ton of questions. I want to watch with subtitles; with their accents, I have zero idea what they are saying. I also get a lot of work done as he watches, and it is a show we watch together. He ignores 99% of my television viewing!
“The Watcher” on Netflix: From a friend in the know about this house in Westfield, NJ, the story as presented in the series goes way off the rails. It was fun to watch at the start and then, poof, what a mess it became. It got more and more crazy, and the actual story bears very little resemblance to this. And yes, traffic HAS been nuts outside that house as people drive by thinking they will see I am not sure what!
“High: Confessions of an Ibiza Drug Mule” on Netflix. This three-part docuseries “focuses on how Michaella McCollum became part of the 'Peru Two,' two college-age girls from the UK that were arrested in Lima on drug trafficking charges in 2013. The series is told from McCollum’s perspective, with her as the narrator and main interview subject. How did a twenty-year-old from Northern Ireland become a drug smuggler in Peru?” For the record, when she says that she thought Lima was a city in Spain, I am thinking, Was she serious? When she got on the plane and saw that it was a 15-hour flight, I actually laughed.
On Sunday, we are going to my dad’s house to watch football and make dinner. On Wednesday, Tom and I are headed to Charleston. Our good friend, Cathy, moved, and we are planning to catch a couple of the events at the Charleston Literary Festival. On one of the panels, Betsy Prioleau and Tina Brown will talk about their most recent books, DIAMONDS AND DEADLINES and THE PALACE PAPERS, with moderator Amanda Foreman, the notable nonfiction writer. That evening we are going to the opening event, which is a dance party. Picture me trying to decide what to pack! And we are driving since flying these days feels like you are in Vegas, playing odds on whether or not you get there!
Happy Halloween! I am at the point where I am seeing rain in the forecast for Monday night. So when candy shopping, I probably need to think about what leftovers I want to have on hand. Hmmmm...peanut M&Ms and...hmmmm.
Read on, and have a great week.

1980, Pass Christian, Mississippi: It is three in the morning when Bobby Western zips the jacket of his wet suit and plunges from the Coast Guard tender into darkness. His dive light illuminates the sunken jet, nine bodies still buckled in their seats, hair floating, eyes devoid of speculation. Missing from the crash site are the pilot’s flight bag, the plane’s black box and the 10th passenger. But how? A collateral witness to machinations that can only bring him harm, Western is shadowed in body and spirit --- by men with badges; by the ghost of his father, inventor of the bomb that melted glass and flesh in Hiroshima; and by his sister, the love and ruin of his soul. On Sale December 6th
1972, Black River Falls, Wisconsin: Alicia Western, 20 years old and with $40,000 in a plastic bag, admits herself to the hospital. A doctoral candidate in mathematics at the University of Chicago, Alicia has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, and she does not want to talk about her brother, Bobby. Instead, she contemplates the nature of madness, the human insistence on one common experience of the world; she recalls a childhood where, by the age of seven, her own grandmother feared for her; she surveys the intersection of physics and philosophy. Oprah’s Latest Book Club Pick
DEMON COPPERHEAD by Barbara Kingsolver (Fiction)
Audiobook available, read by Charlie Thurston
DEMON COPPERHEAD is set in the mountains of southern Appalachia. It’s the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit and a fierce talent for survival. In a plot that never pauses for breath, relayed in his own unsparing voice, he braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves and crushing losses.
