Yesterday I said a sad goodbye to my first fan, my mom, who passed away at the age of 93. She had fallen a few weeks ago, and from there it was a really slippery slope. She was an elementary school teacher for more than 25 years, and from an early age she instilled in me a lifelong love of reading. Trips with her to the library and the bookmobile were a regular part of my growing up. She was a voracious reader, and through the last 26 years of The Book Report, one of my joys was when she would read a book that had been featured and share with me her thoughts about it in an email or a phone call. She belonged to a book group and loved suggesting books for her group to read based on my recommendations or our reviews, and then sharing her group’s reading list with me.
No doctor needed to tell me that things were taking a turn for her. I knew when she no longer asked me to bring her books that I recommended, or sent me a note about something she read in the newsletter. Her Saturday morning emails about something in the newsletter or my interviews always made me smile, and when those notes stopped some months ago, I knew we were headed into new territory.
She attended many of the events that I have done through the years, including our 5th and 10th anniversary parties, and more recently at the Morristown Festival of Books and local library programs. Not seeing her smiling face in the audience will take some adjustment. Because she instilled a love of reading in young children, in lieu of flowers, we will be asking friends and family to donate to First Book, which provides brand-new books and resources to kids in need. Dad lost the love of his life, and Tom, the boys and I will work to try to fill a part of that void for him in the weeks and months ahead. We are now going through a year of “firsts” for both my mom and my mother-in-law, the kind of firsts that no one wants.
Since I took a lot of extra time to be with my mom these past two weeks, we do not have a new video interview to share, but know that I am lining up more for the weeks to come.
This week, I gasped when I saw an obituary for Nicholas Evans, best known as the author of the 1995 novel, THE HORSE WHISPERER. I first met Nick in 2008 when he needed a website, and his publisher asked me to meet with him. Another division of our company, Authors On The Web, builds websites for authors. I confess to feeling quite intimidated about this meeting, but he could not have been more kind or interesting. Through the years we forged a friendship, talking not only about books and writing --- I enjoyed all of his books, including THE BRAVE, THE DIVIDE, THE LOOP and THE SMOKE JUMPER --- but also about family and life. He met my sons at an event in the city years ago; he so enjoyed them, and they him. He loved his home in the countryside in Devon; my son, Greg, had talked about catching up with him there at some point.
There was one period when I had not heard from him for a bit, and I sent him a note. He said, “Google my name and mushrooms, and you will see what has been going on with me.” He and his wife, as well as his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, had eaten some poisonous mushrooms that put them in kidney failure by the following morning. He was grateful that the children had not been interested in eating them. As his health improved after a transplant from his daughter, Lauren, one that he had been reluctant to do as he never wanted to put her in jeopardy, we picked up with our occasional emails and phone calls.
Just last week, I had thought that I had not heard from him in a while, but life got in the way and I did not reach out. Hearing that he passed away from a heart attack last Tuesday at the age of 72 made me wish I had dropped him that note. He shared my passion for the American West, which was something that I always enjoyed about him.
Sandra Brown is back with her latest thriller, OVERKILL, in which a conflict of conscience for a former football star and an ambitious state prosecutor swiftly intensifies into a fight for their lives.
According to our reviewer Pamela Kramer, “There is a reason why Sandra Brown is a bestselling author. Reading her books is like diving into a cool pool on a hot day --- you just want to stay there. For that reason, they are quick reads. The dialogue, characters and plot are engrossing, as is the peek into the mind of a truly depraved individual…. OVERKILL is the epitome of a 'summer read' with its beautiful meshing of action and romance.” Sandra is one of my favorite “read in the pool” authors, and I cannot wait to read this one.
In stores now is BLACK DOG, the 62nd Stone Barrington thriller from Stuart Woods, who passed away just last month at the age of 84. This time, Stone must battle a nasty opponent and prevent him from wreaking havoc across New York City.
Barbara Lipkien Gershenbaum has our review and says, “The tension reaches a fever pitch as the narrative unfolds. Secrets and red herrings are revealed, forcing readers to speculate about who murdered whom. Fans of Stuart Woods and Stone Barrington will not be disappointed in this action-packed adventure and will be happy to know that book #63, DISTANT THUNDER, will be available in October.”
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:

Our Suspense/Thriller Author Spotlight of WIDOWLAND continues this week with an interview that our reviewer Rebecca Munro conducted with C. J. Carey. In Carey's expert hands, one can truly believe that literature can change the world.”

News & Pop Culture
“Never Have I Ever” and “Indian Matchmaking”: I confess to being so amused by both of these Netflix shows. In a week when I needed escape, they brought it. Nothing deep here, folks...just pure escape!
It has not rained since June, but it poured buckets Wednesday night as I hosted book group. While we were first on the deck, we quickly grabbed the wine and pies that I had bought and headed to what Tom calls “The Cleopatra Tent,” the new turquoise tent in the yard where I frequently hide out to read. It was the perfect place for the eight of us to discuss Adele Myers' THE TOBACCO WIVES and life as the rain poured down. And it did pour down!
Days of sharing memories of my mom and celebrating her are on the agenda for the weekend. I am looking forward to hearing what family and friends have to say about her as we honor her wonderful life and support my dad.

Our Interview with C. J. Carey, Author of WIDOWLAND
A Suspense/Thriller Author Spotlight Title
WIDOWLAND by C. J. Carey is a thrilling feminist dystopian novel set in an alternative history that terrifyingly imagines what a British alliance with Germany would look like if the Nazis had won WWII. In this interview conducted by Bookreporter reviewer Rebecca Munro, Carey talks about her inspiration for the book’s premise; explains how she approached her research of major historical moments and figures to write the story; introduces readers to her main character, Rose, and Rose’s role in society; and offers a sneak peek at the sequel to WIDOWLAND, THE LAST QUEEN, which takes place two years later in 1955.
WIDOWLAND by C. J. Carey (Alternate History/Dystopian Thriller)
Audiobook available, read by Esther Wane
London, 1953. Thirteen years have passed since England surrendered to the Nazis and formed a Grand Alliance with Germany. It was forced to adopt many of its oppressive ideologies, one of which was the strict classification of women into hierarchical groups based on the perceived value they brought to society.
Rose Ransom, a member of the privileged Geli class, remembers life from before the war but knows better than to let it show. She works for the Ministry of Culture, rewriting the classics of English literature to ensure there are no subversive thoughts that will give women any ideas.
Outbreaks of insurgency have been seen across the country with graffiti made up of seditious lines from forbidden works by women painted on public buildings. Suspicion has fallen on Widowland, the run-down slums where childless women over 50 have been banished. Rose is given the dangerous task of infiltrating Widowland to find the source of the rebellion before the Leader arrives in England for the Coronation ceremony of King Edward VIII and Queen Wallis.
Will Rose follow her instructions and uncover the criminals? Or will she fight for what she knows in her heart is right?
