Sometimes You Just Need an Escape!
My last few weeks have been anything but quiet and calm. So when I was looking for a book to read this week, I wanted more of an escape than something heavy. MEANT TO BE by Emily Giffin is a book that I have talked about during our “Bookaccino Live” events and library previews over the last few months. And it was just the escape that I needed this week. I loved it! You can read on for more about why it worked for me later in this newsletter as it is a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection.
Amusingly, I had a dream about MEANT TO BE the other night. Well, not about the actual story, but in my dream, Cate, the female character in the book, was trying to get back to the city to meet up with Joe. Along the way, she had all kinds of pitfalls in trying to get there. I feel like I should reach out to Emily to see if she wants me to channel any of her future plots before she finishes writing the books. I woke up very convinced that the book had proceeded the way I had thought it through.
Also, I could not sleep on Wednesday night, so I decided to just finish the book...and then promptly slept through my alarm on Thursday morning until 10:15! Ha, here I can blame Emily. It is a book lover’s version of “the dog ate my homework.” I confess that I could not stop reading!
We hosted this month’s “Bookaccino Live” preview event on Wednesday afternoon. I talked about 28 books releasing between now and July 5th, along with eight from August, that we wanted to get on your radar. You can watch it here and see a list of the featured titles here.
Next month’s “Bookaccino Live” preview event will take place on Wednesday, July 13th at 2pm ET. I will present titles releasing between July 12th and August 2nd, along with a few from September, that we think will appeal to you. Click here to sign up. Those attending the live event will be asked to answer a survey about the books from the presentation that they are most interested in reading and will be eligible to win a prize.
Summer just wouldn’t be the same without an Elin Hilderbrand novel to look forward to, and she certainly doesn’t disappoint with her latest offering, THE HOTEL NANTUCKET. Desperate for a second act, Nantucket sweetheart Lizbet Keaton has been named the new general manager of the Hotel Nantucket. Armed with her local expertise and a charismatic staff, she is determined to help put this once Gilded Age gem turned abandoned eyesore back on the map.
Our reviewer Sarah Rachel Egelman calls the book “a detail-rich and amusing page-turner” and goes on to say, “Hilderbrand has crafted a tightly plotted and enjoyable story of a diverse group of people coming together for a shared purpose under some extraordinary circumstances. Whether you are on the beach or elsewhere, this promises to be a satisfying and charming novel.”
Word of Mouth Reminder
We’re giving away THE HOTEL NANTUCKET in our current Word of Mouth contest, along with VACATIONLAND by Meg Mitchell Moore, which will be a Bets On pick. Submit your comments about the books you’ve read, and you’ll have a chance to win both these titles. Please do so by Friday, June 24th at noon ET. Find out why I’m betting you’ll love VACATIONLAND in next week’s newsletter.
The Ghent Altarpiece is the most violated work of art in the world. Thirteen times it has been vandalized, dismantled or stolen. Why? What secrets does it hold? Find out in Steve Berry’s newly released thriller, THE OMEGA FACTOR. From the tranquil canals of Ghent, to the towering bastions of Carcassonne, and finally into an ancient abbey high in the French Pyrenees, UNESCO investigator Nicholas Lee must confront a modern-day religious crusade intent on eliminating a shocking truth from humanity’s past.
According to our reviewer Ray Palen, “Berry has produced the most brilliant premise of all for the book's finale…. [A]ny novel of his is an experience. You can just feel the research and historical context dripping off of each and every page. He always takes the time to separate fact from fiction at the end of his books, and it never ceases to amaze me how much is indeed factual.”
Our Debut Suspense/Thriller Author Spotlight is back, and this time we’re featuring Joshua Moehling’s first thriller, AND THERE HE KEPT HER, which released this week. When two teenagers break into a house on a remote lake in search of prescription drugs, what starts as a simple burglary turns into a nightmare for all involved. Emmett Burr has secrets he's been keeping in his basement for more than two decades, and he'll do anything to keep his past from being revealed. As he gets the upper hand on his tormentors, the lines between victim, abuser and protector will blur. Motivated by a family connection, former police officer Ben Packard leads the investigation into the missing teens --- but it won’t be long before he’s forced to reveal his own secrets.
Ray Palen has our review and says, “Joshua Moehling has created realistic, extraordinarily complex characters who are not immediately likable. This is dark, gritty writing at its finest, and I look forward to reading more from him.” We are planning to share an interview with Joshua in the next couple of weeks.
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:

Revisiting My “Bookreporter Talks To” Interview with Megan Miranda
Out in paperback this week is Megan Miranda’s psychological thriller from last year, SUCH A QUIET PLACE, which is about a mysterious murder in an idyllic and close-knit neighborhood. Oprah’s latest Book Club pick is Leila Mottley’s NIGHTCRAWLING, a debut novel about a young Black woman who walks the streets of Oakland and stumbles headlong into the failure of its justice system. Oprah says, “It always brings me joy to help introduce new writers to the reading community, and this young poet wowed me with her ode and elegy to Oakland, and her acute and insightful depictions of youth, injustice, the legacy of incarceration, and the resilience of community and chosen family.”
On June 30th, a livestream conversation between Oprah and Mottley, along with four followers of Oprah’s Book Club, will air on “Oprah Daily” beginning at 7pm ET. We will feature our review of the book in next week’s newsletter, so please be on the lookout for that!
It was announced this week that Ruth Ozeki won the Women's Prize for Fiction for her fourth novel, THE BOOK OF FORM AND EMPTINESS, which released in paperback on Tuesday. It revolves around a boy who hears the voices of objects all around him, a mother drowning in her possessions, and a Book that might hold the secret to saving them both. Reader Mail:
Barbara wrote, “Bonnie Kistler, a novelist from Sarasota, Florida, and the author of THE CAGE, was on 'Jeopardy!' on Tuesday, May 24th. She came in third, but it was interesting to see her compete. I read THE CAGE, and it was one of your Bets On selections.” I loved reading this news and wish I had caught the episode.
Michelle wrote, “Many thanks for the contest copy of HELLTOWN by Casey Sherman! Just like Goodreads giveaways, I can’t resist taking the opportunity to possibly add to my shelves, and I finally wore you down. Were the odds in my favor? Maybe yes. Was I thrilled to be a winner? Definitely yes! Many years ago, librarian extraordinaire Claudia Silk from Fairfield Public Library introduced me to your site, and ever since I have thoroughly enjoyed your interviews, your bookish information and participating in 'Bookaccino Live' each month. I shared a picture on my Instagram, @bookshelfbybeckwith. I will be sure to post a review closer to publication date.” I love this note and am thrilled that Claudia let Michelle know about our site. I did a virtual event for the Fairfield Public Library on Tuesday night. I shared great summer reading titles, and it was lots of fun.
Cathy wrote this about her book group winning copies of DAMNATION SPRING by Ash Davidson in a previous “What's Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest on ReadingGroupGuides.com: “Thank you so much. I have let my book club know that we can expect a new read!”
Joan wrote, “Thanks, Carol, for all the great book news you provide weekly. It gives me great pleasure to read your newsletters, and when I finish there are always additions to my TBR list. I also love that you’re a gardener and knitter! From you I learned of Purl Soho and the Vigoroot pots.” I am trying something new with Vigoroot pots this year after my failed robust lettuce growing. I am planting flowers in them. Lots of them. I have some zinnias that will be tall, and these, I think, can look wonderful behind the patio chairs.
I have realized that one set of dahlias is not going to grow high enough for the pots that we have them in, so back to the garden center I shall go! I have lots of geraniums to plant and one space where I have NO idea what I am going to do with it. Check back next week to see if I come up with a solution!
I have been in the garden, reading or doing events every night this week, so there hasn't been much television viewing. But in the background, I have been watching “The Staircase” on HBO Max. This is an adaptation of the documentary program that first aired on Netflix. There has been a lot of conversation from the original filmmakers, as well as the family, about it. Background watching, not front ground watching.
Greg is in Vancouver for Land Rover events for the next two weekends, working from away during the weeks, so it is quiet around the hacienda.
My friend Mindy is in from California, and we are getting together tomorrow. Mindy worked in television and is one of the funniest people I know.
Happy Father’s Day to all of the dads out there. For those of you who are missing your dads this holiday, be kind to yourselves, and our thoughts are with you. We are going to be celebrating Father’s Day with my dad and Tom on Sunday; Cory will be here, too. I bought cards in advance, which is something very rare! This is better than the wedding we went to last weekend where we left the card at home.
I am sure that Tom will be watching the U.S. Open this weekend when he’s not playing golf. At least this tournament is one that will not require a special menu like the Masters does with pimento cheese sandwiches!
Tuesday is one of my favorite days of the year --- the longest day of daylight, the start of summer!
Our office is closed on Monday for Juneteenth. I confess to knowing nothing about Juneteenth until a couple of years ago, which I am not proud of. I am endlessly interested in how the lens of history changes over time.
Read on, and have a great week.

TRACY FLICK CAN’T WIN by Tom Perrotta
and MEANT TO BE by Emily Giffin
TRACY FLICK CAN'T WIN by Tom Perrotta (Fiction)
There are times when I get a sneak peek at a book long before it comes out. That is what happened with Tom Perrotta’s TRACY FLICK CAN’T WIN, which I read last October. I completely disappeared into it on a warm Saturday afternoon on the deck.
Here, Tracy Flick is in line to become the new public school principal in a small town in New Jersey when the reigning principal, Jack Weede, announces his retirement to explore the country with his wife in a Winnebago. For a few moments, it looks like Tracy has it all nailed, and then… Well, Perrotta flips the story around again and again…and again. There were many laugh-out-loud moments, but more than that, I was in awe of his storytelling, which is both comic and so truthful. He shifted the story from chapter to chapter, which ramped up the pace and the action, and I just kept reading. He made me question the town’s heroes, as well as those with all the power. But in the end, it does feel like everyone got their due.

MEANT TO BE by Emily Giffin (Fiction)
Those who follow Emily Giffin know that she loves the Kennedys and the Queen/monarchy. MEANT TO BE is a veiled and oh-so-fun look at John Jr. and his crazy romantic life right up to the time he falls head first in love.
Here Joseph S. Kingsley III (see what I mean about the veiled reference?) falls for a woman he meets by chance who is out of his social circle. Cate Cooper has a checkered past, which includes a stepfather who berates her and beats on her mom. She is discovered as a model, moves to New York and meets Joe there. He is impetuous and a true free spirit. His mom wants him destined for political life; his dad had been killed in an accident, so the family legacy all hinges on him. He has flunked the bar twice, has been photographed in a seemingly unending list of compromising positions, and has what we call “a reputation.”
