Yesterday morning, we got the sad call that my mother-in-law had passed away at the age of 94 ¼. I feel like those extra percentages get to count when you are under 10 and over 90, and she earned that ¼ yesterday. She had been declining for a while, but news like this always catches one off guard. The sheer finality to it. She was an avid reader, mostly of beach books and “books where everyone ended up happy.” She knew I would find those for her; trust that I was glad that a few authors had written resort-themed books that I could give her for Christmas. By her February birthday, I typically was coming up short.
She always took joy in the opener and closer of this newsletter. Though we talked to her often, she felt like this was a great way to keep up with us. She loved saying that she knew where Greg or Cory was “from the newsletter.” She also recruited people from her book group to become subscribers. We went to visit her on Mother’s Day weekend, and her friend Melanie was there. I introduced myself, and she said, “I know you from the newsletter.” There was something really lovely about that. We all will be gathering to celebrate her wonderful life in a couple of weeks. I am glad we will have time to bundle our memories.
Last Friday afternoon, we hosted our 11th Annual Book Group Speed Dating event for booksellers, librarians and book club leaders. Representatives from 14 publishers presented more than 60 titles perfect for book groups that will be published between now and October. You can watch the event here. Please note that we have timestamped the video, so if you would like to hear from a specific publisher, you easily can do that!
If you would like to know more about the books, click here to access a PDF of the PowerPoint presentation of the featured titles, as well as an Excel spreadsheet that lists the books both by publisher and alphabetically by title, along with a sheet to take notes.
This is your last Bookreporter newsletter reminder to sign up for this month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event, which will take place next Wednesday, May 25th at 8pm ET.
Our guest will be Janet Skeslien Charles, and we will be talking about her instant New York Times bestseller, THE PARIS LIBRARY, a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick that is now available in paperback. Based on the true World War II story of the heroic librarians at the American Library in Paris, this is an unforgettable story of romance, friendship, family and the power of literature to bring us together. I loved interviewing Janet when her book came out in hardcover, and she reminded me the other day that I also was her first interviewer about the book when I met her at Winter Institute in January 2020.
You can register for the event by clicking here. If you would like to ask Janet a question on camera during the event and chat with her in our “backstage green room” before the event, please email me with your question using the subject line “Question for Janet” by Wednesday the 25th at noon ET. Those who are camera shy can send their questions via the Q&A feature on Zoom.
What if you could take a vacation to your past? This is the thought-provoking question at the heart of Emma Straub’s latest novel, THIS TIME TOMORROW. Here, Straub offers her own twist on traditional time-travel tropes and a different kind of love story.
Sarah Rachel Egelman has our review and calls the book “lovely, thoughtful and poignant. It is never saccharine and manages to avoid cynicism, which is no small feat in writing about family dynamics and self-reflection…. This is a beautiful and rare novel, lovingly crafted with wisdom about and affection for the characters. Straub asks readers to ponder life and death, as well as the choices that define them, while still offering an entertaining, slyly humorous and truly special story.”
TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY is Linwood Barclay’s gripping new psychological thriller and an upcoming Bets On pick. It’s about a formerly missing woman who has suddenly returned under mysterious circumstances.
According to our reviewer Ray Palen, “Linwood Barclay has plenty of surprises up his sleeve that will have your head spinning as your desire to find out the truth about what actually happened six years ago becomes so strong that it is impossible for the present circumstances to hide the answers any longer. This is a brilliantly crafted novel that at times made me feel like I was in the middle of a Robert Goddard story (for those who may not know, Goddard is a UK writer famous for his twisty, almost unbelievable plots). It is simply that good. As the title states, prepare to have your breath taken away!” I will share my Bets On commentary soon.

Reader Mail:
Debra wrote, “Dear Bookreporter, you have the very best newsletter I have ever seen. Thank you for providing such great information to us book lovers.” We appreciate these kind words!
Niki wrote about being a Summer Reading contest winner this week: "This is so very exciting, thank you so much! I cannot wait to read BEACH HOUSE SUMMER. It's just what I needed to start summer!" I love hearing from enthusiastic winners.
“This Is Us” on NBC: The final episode is coming on Tuesday night. Here is a terrific piece about the show from its creator, Dan Fogelman, and an interview. This past week's episode was not easy watching with all that's been going on in my personal life, but it was so well done.
“The Lincoln Lawyer” on Netflix: I am saving this as I think my husband will enjoy it too.
“Bosch: Legacy” on Amazon Freevee: I just need time to catch up.
I am looking forward to reading TWO NIGHTS IN LISBON with an eye on interviewing Chris Pavone next week. I have not read him before, but at last week's "Bookaccino Live" event, readers in the audience were rousing with their praise and thought I would like his writing.
My niece is getting married in Philadelphia this afternoon, so Tom and the boys headed there with me. I am looking forward to celebrating Sara and her husband. Last weekend, we enjoyed a lovely time at the beach wedding that we attended. Tom and I have not been to a wedding in years, and now we have been to two in eight days. We stayed out late last weekend like we were as young as the bride and groom, which was incredibly fun.
Cory leaves tomorrow for the Lilac Festival in Rochester to celebrate his girlfriend Kaltrina's birthday. Greg is headed to Canada as he will be working from away next week and then attending a Land Rover event.
I am happy that the pool will finally get opened this weekend. I am ready to get some gardening done and so excited to enjoy time outside.
Read on, and have a great week.
