As I write this, we have devoured corned beef to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. I know it is not true Irish food, but we enjoy it the one time of year that we make it! We tried two new kinds of Irish soda bread, and I did not like either. Next year, I am going to try my friend’s recipe for her mom’s BEST Irish soda bread! And we need to remember to make TWO corned beefs since the best part is sandwiches on rye bread. We have no leftovers!
I have been reading THE LONG WEEKEND by Gilly Macmillan, and I am looking forward to free time this weekend to finish it. Three women head out of town a day in advance of their husbands for a weekend getaway at a secluded location. When they arrive, they receive a note that one of their husbands has been killed. A storm has rolled in, and there is no way to make contact with the men to see what is going on. Gilly already has hit me with a twist, followed by another, and I see more brewing! It’s good in the same way I devour a Ruth Ware locked-room thriller. I am interviewing Gilly on Tuesday and am writing lots of questions for her. I also am going to memorize the phone numbers of everyone in my family. We rely way too much on our cell phones for this. When you read the book, you will see why!
Last week during the American Booksellers Association’s conference, I grabbed some time in one of the virtual rooms to talk to Jane Green about her upcoming book, SISTER STARDUST, which is a fictional telling of the life of Talitha Getty, the wife of Paul Getty. It kicks off when she is in her 20s, and her career as a model and actress has been solidified. She’s loved from London to the hot spot of Marrakesh. Along for the ride is a woman named Claire. From what I have heard, the scene there gets a little crazy...actually more than a little crazy. Bring on the bell-bottoms.
And I will be prepping for the following program with Lisa See. ON GOLD MOUNTAIN is so interesting!
This is your last Bookreporter newsletter reminder to sign up for this month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event, which will take place on Wednesday, March 23rd at 8pm ET. Our guest will be Lisa See, and we’ll be talking about her first book, ON GOLD MOUNTAIN, a memoir of her Chinese-American family. Click here to register.
If you would like to ask Lisa a question on camera during the event, please email me with your question using the subject line “Question for Lisa See” by Tuesday at 6pm ET. Those who are camera shy can send their questions via the Q&A feature on Zoom.
Coming to San Marino, CA in May will be an opera inspired by ON GOLD MOUNTAIN, so I am looking forward to asking Lisa about that as well. Click here for all the details on that and to purchase your tickets to the opera.
We have two new "Bookreporter Talks To" interviews to share with you in this newsletter.
First up is Brendan Slocumb, whose debut novel, THE VIOLIN CONSPIRACY, is a "Good Morning America" Book Club pick and a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection. Ray McMillian is determined to become a world-class professional violinist but is unable to afford an instrument of his own. When it is determined that his great-great-grandfather’s beat-up old fiddle is actually a priceless Stradivarius, suddenly a lot of people are paying attention to it --- and to him. Shortly before Ray's appearance at the most prestigious musical competition in the world, the violin is stolen, and he will need millions of dollars to pay the ransom.
In the interview, Brendan explains his inspiration for the book, which he wrote over the course of a few months. He talks about the pacing and many of the characters who mirror people in his own life. He also discusses his career as a musician, the similarities between music and writing, and how he uses music to influence readers. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast.
My second interview is with Kimberly Belle, whose latest thriller, MY DARLING HUSBAND, we previewed in our "In Case You Missed Them...and a Look Ahead" feature last October. The book takes a small-scale home invasion that Jade Lasky and her two children face, and ramps it up into a high-octane, life-and-death situation. Jade’s husband, Cam, must come up with a very specific ransom, leading Jade to ask questions about how well she knows her husband and his supposedly successful restaurant business.
In the interview, Kimberly discusses her research, which involved talking to the real “Steak King” of Atlanta about the ins and outs of the restaurant business, and how looks can deceive folks. She explains how she strove to create characters who would be realistic up against these odds. We also chat about the Killer Author Club series that she is doing with Heather Gudenkauf and Kaira Rouda on Facebook and YouTube. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast.
The newly released THE MATCH is the second book in Harlan Coben’s series featuring the man with a mysterious past, following THE BOY FROM THE WOODS. This time, Wilde follows a tip that may finally reveal the truth behind his abandonment --- only to end up in the sights of a ruthless killer. According to our reviewer Ray Palen, the book “is full of surprises and allows Harlan Coben the opportunity to answer the questions his readers had about Wilde from the previous novel. It also shows off his expert plotting and storytelling, which is fully on display here and makes for one heck of a good read.”
IN LOVE is Amy Bloom’s heartbreaking memoir chronicling her husband Brian’s devastating Alzheimer’s diagnosis and the painful decision to go to Dignitas, an organization based in Switzerland that empowers a person to end their own life with dignity and peace. Our reviewer Jana Siciliano says, “The fact that Amy Bloom could share with us the specifics of this journey and the love she valued beyond all else is a testament to her unique storytelling powers, and the balm that writing is to her and thus to us.” I have read a number of interviews with Amy talking about this book, and I so admire her honesty.
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:
-
THE BOOK OF COLD CASES: In Simone St. James’ new novel, a true crime blogger gets more than she bargained for while interviewing the woman acquitted of two cold case slayings.
-
NINE LIVES: Nine strangers receive a cryptic list with their names on it --- and then begin to die in highly unusual circumstances --- in Peter Swanson’s new thriller.
-
OCEAN STATE: Set in a working-class town on the Rhode Island coast, Stewart O’Nan’s latest novel is about sisters, mothers, daughters and the terrible things that love makes us do.
-
THE TOBACCO WIVES: In Adele Myers’ debut novel, Maddie Sykes is a seamstress who has just arrived in Bright Leaf, North Carolina, the tobacco capital of the South. However, she will soon learn that Bright Leaf isn’t quite the carefree paradise that it seems. I have this one on my "to be read" list.
Special Contest Reminder
You have until Friday, March 25th at noon ET to enter our contest for THE LIES I TELL by Julie Clark and be one of our 25 lucky winners. Releasing on June 21st, this twisted domestic thriller dives deep into the psyches and motivations of two women and their unwavering quest to seek justice for the past and rewrite the future.
The book has been getting a lot of advance praise from notable authors. Mary Kubica says, “THE LIES I TELL is a knockout. Smart, savvy and so duplicitous with a propulsive storyline and two of the most beguiling female characters I've ever met. And Liv Constantine calls it “[a] modern-day Robin Hood with a feminist twist. This is one of the best books you'll read this year. Unputdownable!”

Becky (pictured above) wrote, “Thank you for the copy of THE BOOK WOMAN’S DAUGHTER. It was a pleasant surprise to see I won this book because I enjoyed THE BOOK WOMAN OF TROUBLESOME CREEK. I posted a review on Goodreads, and I will post on Word of Mouth. I also told friends, family and my book club about the book.”
Joyce wrote, “Thank you!!! I am so excited!!! I received my copy of THE BOOK WOMAN’S DAUGHTER last week from the BRC contest. I read THE BOOK WOMAN OF TROUBLESOME CREEK in February 2020 and loved it. I know I will thoroughly enjoy the sequel as well! I have been a fan of Bookreporter.com for a number of years and look forward to each new email full of book news. I especially love the historical fiction and suspense/thriller book reviews. Being that I still prefer to read 'real bound physical' books, I will be sure to continue to enter your contests. There’s nothing like a new book hot off the press! Thank you for making a difference in not only my life, but many others as well!!!”
“Ted Lasso”: Here's a terrific interview on “60 Minutes” with Ted Lasso himself, Jason Sudeikis.
“Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives” on Netflix: This is in the vein of “Inventing Anna” and “The Dropout”, but here Sarma, a restaurateur, is being conned. I have watched four episodes and am finding her to be incredibly dense for a business woman and her one investor to be extremely patient with a jumble of lies being turned out! Speaking of lies, I just watched the latest episode of "The Dropout," and it should be called "lights and mirrors."
“Pieces of Her” on Netflix: Okay, that had some very scary moments in it…and the ending was one twist after the other. Whew!
“Formula 1: Drive to Survive” is Back on Netflix: I have to see if Tom wants to watch.
The Road to the Final Four has kicked off. I am ready for Charles Barkley. I watched a play-in game the other night with Rutgers playing Notre Dame. Being a Jersey girl, I was rooting for Rutgers. After two overtime periods, they lost just about at the buzzer. I will watch more, but I need to recover from that game!
Spring officially arrives on Sunday. I am so ready!
There is talk of leaving us permanently on daylight saving time in 2023. Longtime readers know I do not talk politics here, but I do wonder about this vote. Children will be in the dark waiting for buses in the morning. Morning exercise will happen in the dark in wintertime. And you know I will be thinking about the lost hour of my life if this happens. I was amused that the vote happened right after the time change, and it was unanimous! I guess they were more awake than me earlier this week.
I have a leisurely weekend ahead, which I do love. I have some yarn that I purchased years ago at Churchmouse on Bainbridge Island, WA, and I am starting a blanket with it. I am four rows in and realized that I should have done a gauge swatch. Instead of doing my usual reverse knitting, I am grabbing a second ball of yarn to do that. I know, so smart!
I hope you find something you love to do this weekend, too! I still feel jet lagged. I need a good weekend of sleep!
Read on, and have a great week.

Supporting each other in their last journey together, Brian and Amy made the unimaginably difficult and painful decision to go to Dignitas, an organization based in Switzerland that empowers a person to end their own life with dignity and peace. But it also has been a place of refuge for those fleeing persecution, never more so than before and after the Russian Revolution and the fall of the Romanov dynasty. It was a place of artistic experimentation, such as Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. But the brutality of the Bolshevik takeover forced Russians of all types to flee their homeland.
