Thanksgiving is one of those holidays where the menu is fairly set; it all revolves around the turkey. On Saturday, Greg will be picking up a fresh-killed turkey. This is the ONLY time of year that we eat turkey. Two people I know are making prime rib this year, and I love their renegade spirit. I still remember the year I talked my parents into making lobster for Thanksgiving, insisting that if the Pilgrims were in Massachusetts, they probably had lobster. Talk about breaking with tradition! I have not lived that one down.
We still are finalizing the guest list as two additional guests may, or may not, be there. Somehow we overcook, and “the count” will not be a very big deal. I already am telling people to bring containers for leftovers. One thing about a fresh turkey is that they often are very small-breasted, so we may cook an extra turkey breast. It’s all about juggling the double oven space.
It has been a really busy last week, so we have a lot to share with you in this update.
Last Friday, we hosted our 10 ½ Annual Book Group Speed Dating event for booksellers, librarians and book club leaders. Representatives from 17 publishers presented more than 75 titles perfect for book groups that will be published between now and next May. You can watch the event here. Please note that we have timestamped the video, so if you would like to hear from a specific publisher, you easily can do that!
If you would like to know more about the books, click here to access a PDF of the PowerPoint presentation of the featured titles, as well as an Excel spreadsheet that lists the books both by publisher and alphabetically by title.
On Tuesday night, we hosted our sixth "Bookaccino Live" Book Group event. Our guest was Jim DeFede, whose 2002 book THE DAY THE WORLD CAME TO TOWN: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland served as the inspiration for the smash hit Broadway musical “Come From Away”. This is one of my favorite books, and the conversation was lively. I loved that Jim shared how he came to write this book and his tales of his time in Gander. I also love that he still keeps in touch with the people there. The audience was terrific; most had read the book, and others were quick to write that they would be reading and gifting it. With Thanksgiving approaching, it’s a story of giving that really resonates. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast.
We already have heard from a few readers about this program:
Helene: "It was wonderful."
Nancy: "I went out and purchased it Wednesday. Almost finished reading it. It is really good. Makes you feel like you are there in Gander."
Barbara: "Thank you SO much for this wonderful evening with Jim DeFede!"
FBI agent Atlee Pine’s harrowing search for her long-lost sister, Mercy, reaches a boiling point in David Baldacci’s latest thriller, MERCY. Ray Palen has our review and says, "I am in awe of David Baldacci --- not just because of his writing skills and masterful plotting, but because of the seemingly tireless pace he has set for the novels he produces each year. So reading MERCY, Baldacci’s latest thriller featuring FBI agent Atlee Pine, gave me a sense of comfort because I knew I was in good hands.... MERCY is classic David Baldacci. It’s full of heart and great thrills, with an intricate plot that only he can conceive."
“Every catastrophe begins with a little problem that doesn’t get fixed.” This line from U.S. President Pauline Green sets the stage for Ken Follett’s nerve-racking drama of international tension, NEVER. According to Ray Palen, "Follett continues to ratchet up the suspense to insane levels as we can only sit on the sidelines and play witness to what is about to become World War III. NEVER is not for the faint of heart as we are in extreme global warfare mode, like a Tom Clancy plot on steroids. Let’s all just hope that these events remain confined to the pages of this intense work of fiction."
Other books we’re reviewing this week include:
-
THE ISLAND OF MISSING TREES by Elif Shafak: The book is this month’s Reese’s Book Club pick, and here’s how Reese describes it: “Through gorgeous prose, we unearth tangled stories from past and present --- a young woman’s desire to understand her roots, and the story of two teenagers, a Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot, whose love was forbidden during a time of conflict and unrest in Cyprus.”
-
A CHRISTMAS LEGACY by Anne Perry: Thomas and Charlotte Pitt’s former maid takes a new job as Christmas approaches --- but not everyone in the household may survive the holidays.
-
THE PLEDGE by Kathleen Kent: In this conclusion to the Edgar-nominated trilogy starring Detective Betty Rhyzyk, the newly promoted Sergeant has only two weeks to take down her deadliest rival --- this time for good.

News & Pop Culture
Reader Mail:
Diane wrote, “I laughed at your recent shopping for amaryllis bulbs. The wax ones have been favorites of mine since Trader Joe’s started selling them several years ago. Last year I gifted 15 or more, and friends without green thumbs loved them. My advice: buy a bunch and decide who gets them later. I had to buy more several times before Christmas. I love to start my day with your newsletter.” I, too, love the wax ones from Trader Joe’s. I was there last weekend, and the store nearest to me told me that they were not going to have them this year. It may be a supply chain issue. If anyone sees them, let me know!
Mindy wrote, “Besides being another fabulous newsletter, thanks for the info about customizable license plates! I named my 24-year-old daughter Jessy. Yup, everywhere we went, no key chain or license plate! I just ordered one! It will make a great addition to her Chanukah gifts.” I love this!
I had the pleasure of screening a documentary that is just out today called Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time. It’s a brilliantly well-done film directed by Robert B. Weide and Don Argott that was shot over the 25-year friendship of Weide and Vonnegut. It’s so personal as he shares so many moments where they spent time together, or there was a call on the phone from Kurt. So many books are covered, as well as his short stories, all told against the backdrop of his life with his family. It’s truly special, whether you are an uber Vonnegut fan or someone who read a book or two of his in school. I really loved it and felt like I came away from it learning so much about him, notably his sense of humor. Weide has so much archival footage, which so enhanced the viewing experience. I highly recommend it. Watch the trailer here.
Adele: She totally rocked her special the other night. We ended up watching it on demand after "Yellowstone". There were so many commercials that we basically caught up with the live show watching 30 minutes later. I am the master of fast forward on the DVR. And as I am writing this newsletter, I can hear Adele belting out songs from the stereo downstairs. My husband is always right on top of new music, so 30 arrived at our house today!
Gander's Ripple Effect: How a Small Town's Kindness Opened on Broadway: As I was doing research for our event with Jim DeFede, I found this great documentary about the Broadway show.
"Dopesick" on Hulu: The finale ran this week, and after watching it, I wonder how the Sacklers are not in jail. If Bernie Madoff got jail time, how can these people really not be behind bars?
Passing on Netflix: I started watching the film adaptation of Nella Larsen's 1929 novel of the same name. In it, two women look at how they identify. I only got to watch a bit, but I am heading back to watch more.
MIRACLE AND WONDER: Conversations with Paul Simon: I wrote about this very special audiobook last week. Here, Paul Simon does a deep dive talking about his battery of work with Malcolm Gladwell and Bruce Headlam. From the liner notes, here’s what Nick White, the editor on the project, shared.
“So this opportunity with Paul Simon was rare. He spoke to Malcolm and Bruce with candor and clarity about how he actually makes his music. And afforded an unprecedented amount of time for them to pursue their curiosities. Who wouldn’t want to be in that room with them? That’s the trick this team of producers pulled off. They captured what it feels like to sit across from one of the most well-known popular songwriters in American history and just...talk. But this wasn’t unstructured chit-chat. The team organized the many conversations between Malcolm, Bruce and Paul into a story. Something that builds as it progresses. And hopefully that’s why the audiobook works.” He is spot on with this comment. You really feel like you were in the room!
A block away from our old office in New York is a restaurant called Molyvos, which serves Greek food. I had many a business lunch there. Last Sunday, I was craving their lemon egg soup. So I went on a quest for an avgolemono recipe; yes, that is what it is called. I found one that I played around with, adding more orzo and following the directions from another on how to get the lemon and egg part right. And then we kept on a creative epicurean track, roasting eggplant with a yogurt sauce and making a quinoa salad. We had planned to have eggplant fra diavolo, but I loved this pivot on the menu.
My Thanksgiving cactuses are blooming, and they really look wonderful. I am glad that I figured out the difference between Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter cactuses; that was an eye opener last year.
This weekend is going to be all about getting organized for the holiday. Wish me luck; it’s been so hectic around here that I really am far behind schedule.
Please note that next week we will be back in your mailboxes on Wednesday, so the staff can enjoy the long weekend.
Read on, and have a great five days!
