It’s Fall; Time to Glue the Leaves Back on the Trees
I have been working from home since March 12, 2020, and Tuesday was the FIRST day I thought, I should work outside. I have a table out there, and great places to sit and read and work, but I have just not done it.
And as I was sitting there, I was feeling guilty that I was not at my desk while I was doing the SAME THINGS that I would be doing INSIDE at my desk. I mean, I feel guilty going to the UPS store downtown to pick up the company mail! If I was still working in New York, I would not fret about leaving my office to pick up lunch or do an errand. But here at the house, I feel like I just roll from the time I wake up to the time I go to sleep. I keep saying that it’s all good things...just a lot of them!
Yesterday I attended a conference online about upcoming books. In between panels (and okay, sometimes during them), I was answering emails and Slack chat notes. There seems to be more opportunity for book discovery these days, and the more I discover, the more I channel ideas on how --- and when --- to share it. That’s one reason I love our "Bookaccino Live" events...and yes, we will be scheduling "Bookaccino Live" Book Group events starting in late October. We still are thinking about potential guests, and we are planning a few more evening events for those who are unable to attend afternoon programming. We know it will start getting dark earlier, and people will be inside cocooning again.
My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Dianna Rostad, whose first novel, YOU BELONG HERE NOW, was a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection when it released in April and received this praise from William Kent Krueger: “I love this book, and I guarantee you won’t find a better debut novel anywhere.”
Three orphans journey west from New York City on one of the infamous orphan trains. After jumping off the train to seek a life all their own, they find themselves on a ranch in Montana where they quickly work to adapt to ranch life. The two older boys work as ranch hands under the doubtful eye of a young woman whose family owns the ranch. She worries that their arrival will get in the way of her plan to someday run the family property. Along the way, the orphans and the ranch family blend in a way that brings healing for all of them.
In the interview, Dianna, who grew up in the Pacific Northwest, talks to me about how the place inspired her. Her family has a long history in Montana, and her father was a huge influence on the book. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast.
Liane Moriarty follows up her New York Times bestseller NINE PERFECT STRANGERS (now a series on Hulu starring Nicole Kidman and Melissa McCarthy) with APPLES NEVER FALL, a novel that looks at marriage, siblings, and how the people we love the most can hurt us the deepest.
Rebecca Munro has our review and has this to say: "Exuberant, cleverly constructed and emotionally taut, APPLES NEVER FALL is a damning, eye-opening portrait of a family, as well as a reminder that growing pains are not limited to any age. With perfectly rendered characters that anchor you to the more explosive, shocking portions of the plot, this is an utterly gripping thrill ride of reveals, betrayals and alliances that is as gobsmacking as it is emotional." I couldn't agree more! The book will be a Bets On pick; don’t miss my commentary in next Friday’s newsletter.
Another upcoming Bets On selection is ROCK PAPER SCISSORS, an instant New York Times bestseller from Alice Feeney and one of our Fall Preview featured titles. Her previous novel, HIS & HERS, also was a Bets On pick. This new domestic thriller has an intriguing tagline: Ten years of marriage. Ten years of secrets. And an anniversary they will never forget.
According to Rebecca, "ROCK PAPER SCISSORS is, without a doubt, the most chilling novel I have read this year...if not ever. Never before have I had to read a domestic thriller with my flashlight at the ready, but Feeney writes with such precision and perfect pacing that her already shocking explorations into the human psyche become exponentially more horrifying. This is very much a writer’s thriller, and her mastery of her craft is on full display at every twist." Find out why I’m betting you’ll love this book in next week’s newsletter.

This week, we learned the sad news that Leila Meacham passed away on Sunday at the age of 83. She was the bestselling author of eight novels, including ROSES, TUMBLEWEEDS, SOMERSET and DRAGONFLY. Leila's husband of 55 years, Dick, posted this poignant message on her Facebook page: "Leila gave much of herself to the world through her contributions as a teacher and a writer. She left us eight books and a ninth that will hopefully be published as well. She inspired generations of young people to follow their dreams and seek excellence. Most importantly, she was a friend to all who knew her and the love of my life. She will be forever missed. Thank you for being there for her. Your responses to her posts gave her strength and kept her going. As Leila would often say, 'never forget you are ever gentle on my mind.'" If I remember correctly, Leila was 72 when her first book, ROSES, was published.
News & Pop Culture
"Being James Bond" on Apple TV+: A really fun look behind the scenes of Daniel Craig’s time as Bond.
"Ted Lasso" on Apple TV+: Last week’s episode (#9) was puzzling.
The Emmys: Remember when network television won all the awards?
"Virgin River" on Netflix: Just as we were going to press with this newsletter, I saw that this has been renewed for seasons four and five!
"A Million Little Things" on ABC: My guilty pleasure show. A great season opener.
In late spring, I bought a lot of seeds to plant fall/winter vegetables. Lots of seeds. I kept waiting for notations from local nurseries that it was time to plant. They never came. Today I called the local garden center to ask for planting advice. Karen, who is so terrific at Great Swamp Greenhouses, told me that I might be able to plant seeds now. I should read all the packages about germination times. It has been so hot here that planting was kind of dicey any sooner than this, but later it might happen during a frost.
I then asked if they had fall vegetable plants in-house; it ends up they just got a fresh supply. So I went and bought three flats of lettuce and, oh, some green and purple broccoli. Even the pro growers have been stymied by the hot weather, which made me feel better. These had just come in! As for those seeds, I am going to save them for spring planting. See, I am ahead of the game unless I lose them like I lost the zinnia seeds from last year.
This weekend Tom is at the beach playing golf with a group of friends; he will come home to see planted lettuce! Beyond that, I have four books to read for an industry event that I am moderating on Wednesday, so I can see myself plastered to a chair reading poolside all weekend! Greg is back from British Columbia, so I will have company for dinners!
Mercury goes retrograde on Monday until October 23rd. I feel like it already started! There have been more than a few miscues and misfires this week. Hold on everyone, and be sure to double check all appointments and plans!
Read on, and have a great week.

FUZZ: When Nature Breaks the Law by Mary Roach (Science/Humor)
Audiobook available, read by Mary Roach
What’s to be done about a jaywalking moose? A bear caught breaking and entering? A murderous tree? Three hundred years ago, animals that broke the law would be assigned legal representation and put on trial. These days, as Mary Roach discovers, the answers are best found not in jurisprudence but in science: the curious science of human-wildlife conflict, a discipline at the crossroads of human behavior and wildlife biology. Combining little-known forensic science and conservation genetics with a motley cast of laser scarecrows, langur impersonators and trespassing squirrels, Roach reveals as much about humanity as about nature’s lawbreakers.
