First up is Sadeqa Johnson, Carol chatted with Sharon Virts about her debut novel, MASQUE OF HONOR, which releases on Tuesday. It is our current Historical Fiction Author Spotlight title and a future Bets On selection. Carol had a super reading week with THE GOOD SISTER by Sally Hepworth (on sale April 13th), LiveWriters curates an engaging, immersive, user-friendly experience where a diverse collection of the most important and compelling podcasts about books, authors and publishing can be shared and enjoyed. Click on the image above to learn more and to sign up for their newsletter. To kick off Women's History Month in March, Carol will be moderating a panel featuring Lauren Willig, Marilyn, the Grand Prize winner in our End-of-the-Year Contest, sent Carol the photo above and wrote, Super Reading! This has been a big reading week for me. Sally Hepworth has been an author whose thrillers I enjoy, so it was such fun to pluck her upcoming book (releasing April 13th) off my shelf and escape for a while. THE GOOD SISTER is about two sisters who are twins, Fern and Rose. Fern has challenges, and Rose has always been there for her. Rose wants to have a baby, but has been unable to. What will Fern do for Rose? But as the story unfolds, who is really doing what to whom? I think this is Sally’s best book...and yes, it will be a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection. Then I read WHEN HARRY MET MINNIE, which is a lovely story about a dog lover in New York City who is looking for an older bull terrier, as hers has just passed away. She mentioned this to a friend, and he recommends that she meet a friend of his who has one. His friend is dying, and she is looking for a home for Harry. So Harry meets Minnie, and for these two it is love at first sight. The story of them and their owners is just lovely. Oh, and the dog lover from New York City is CBS correspondent Martha Teichner. She does a brilliant job of telling this story that captures both New York City and a love of dogs. You can see a wonderful piece about the book, and the story behind it, on "CBS Sunday Morning" here. By the way, this book is one of the prizes in our Valentine's Day feature. More on that later! We know that many of you enjoy listening to talks from authors and conversations about books. A number of you have asked if there is a list of book podcasts available. We are happy to share that there is now. LiveWriters has a collection of the most important podcasts about books, authors and publishing. They have a newsletter that you can sign up for here. And you may just recognize the podcaster that they interview for their next newsletter on Tuesday, February 9th. This was a BIG week for Kristin Hannah. Her highly anticipated new novel, THE FOUR WINDS, came out on Tuesday. It is February’s “Read with Jenna” Today Show Book Club pick, a LibraryReads Top Pick, an Indie Next pick and an upcoming Bets On selection. The following day, Netflix released the first season of “Firefly Lane,” which is based on Kristin’s 2008 book of the same name. It stars Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke as inseparable BFFs who support each other through good times and bad. By yesterday it was the number one show on Netflix in the United States and Canada. I already watched one episode, and it was so well done. It’s an enhanced version of the book. Heigl posted something interesting on her Instagram page. She did a side-by-side of herself and other cast members reading the book while the show that mirrored it unfolded on the screen beside her. You can see that here. Here’s a brief plot summary of THE FOUR WINDS: Texas, 1934. Millions are out of work, and a drought has broken the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as the crops are failing, the water is drying up and dust threatens to bury them all. One of the darkest periods of the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl era, has arrived with a vengeance. In this uncertain and dangerous time, Elsa Martinelli --- like so many of her neighbors --- must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or go west, to California, in search of a better life. We have our review this week from Norah Piehl, who says, “Even if you think you have a good understanding of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl from your history classes, you are bound to learn something new about this period from THE FOUR WINDS…. The Martinellis’ story resonates with the plight of present-day migrants and refugees, and will give readers plenty of opportunity to reflect on current policies and politics around these issues. Beyond these big concerns, THE FOUR WINDS is also powerful on a much more intimate level, as the bittersweet story of a woman who has spent her whole life being invisible but finally finds her voice when it matters most.” Don’t miss my Bets On commentary in next week’s newsletter. Also, I will be interviewing Kristin for the Morristown Festival of Books @Home live virtual author event series on Saturday, February 20th. Ticket information is here. We have two “Bookreporter Talks To” interviews to share with you this week. First up is Sadeqa Johnson, whose new novel, YELLOW WIFE, is my latest Bets On selection and is this month’s pick for Simon & Schuster’s Book Club Favorites. This harrowing story follows an enslaved woman who is forced to barter love and freedom while living in the most infamous slave jail in Virginia. Sadeqa talked about her inspiration for writing the book, how she tackled the serious topics that are addressed here, the relationship that her children have with the novel, and how working with J. K. Rowling as her publicist helped pave the way for her career as an author. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast. Also, be sure to take a look at my Bets On commentary; our review, which we featured in last week’s newsletter; and the discussion guide, which we added to ReadingGroupGuides.com this week. My second interview is with Sharon Virts, whose debut novel, MASQUE OF HONOR, will be a Bets On pick and is our current Historical Fiction Author Spotlight title. In this coming-of-age tale set in early 19th-century America, two sons of the Virginia aristocracy risk it all to defend their dreams and determine their own destinies. We discussed what anchors us in history, such as ancient houses and long-forgotten relics. Since this is her first book, Sharon described her journey crafting the story and the editing that brought improvements to each draft. She also explained what she wants to share about women in her writing, which comes after years of running a company that had about 5,000 employees the day she sold it. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast. The book releases on Tuesday, and we will feature our review next week, followed by my Bets On commentary in the February 19th newsletter. You may remember Jane Harper's debut novel, THE DRY, which was a #1 international bestseller. In her fourth and latest novel, THE SURVIVORS, Jane introduces readers to Kieran Elliott, whose life changed forever when a reckless mistake led to devastating consequences. The guilt that still haunts him resurfaces during a visit with his young family to the small coastal community he once called home. When a body is discovered on the beach, long-held secrets threaten to emerge. Norah Piehl has this to say in her review: "Jane Harper has become something of a sensation in recent years. Her Australian-based mysteries combine tense, intricate plots with portraits of interesting and evocative places. Her latest novel, THE SURVIVORS, offers an equally compelling setting.... With its intriguing plot and strong Tasmanian setting, THE SURVIVORS should help cement Harper’s reputation as one of the most interesting Australian writers working today." I will be interviewing Jane next week; she's in Australia, so we were juggling times to make this work. We have reviewed all of John Hart’s books, so we’re excited to see that he’s back with a new novel, THE UNWILLING, his first in three years. Set in the South at the height of the Vietnam War, this thriller revolves around two brothers, Gibby and Jason, the latter of whom served in the war and spent time behind bars. Their day at the lake turns deadly when a woman is savagely murdered. Suspicion first turns to Jason, whose violent history does him no favors. But when another woman is kidnapped, the police also suspect Gibby. Determined to prove Jason innocent, Gibby must avoid the cops and dive deep into his brother's hidden life. Our reviewer Joe Hartlaub calls the book “a frightening coming-of-age tale highlighting the capability of both depravity and redemption of the human soul” and points out, “While the book is complete in itself, there are enough ends dangling at the conclusion that a sequel would be welcomed with open arms. What we have here is yet another embarrassment of riches from Hart’s seemingly unlimited basket of talents.” Other books we’re reviewing this week include THE RUSSIAN, the 13th installment in James Patterson and James O. Born’s series starring Detective Michael Bennett, whose wedding is crashed by a serial killer; GOOD NEIGHBORS, Sarah Langan’s literary noir in which a sudden tragedy exposes the depths of deception and damage in a Long Island suburb, pitting neighbor against neighbor and putting one family in terrible danger; and IDA B. THE QUEEN by Michelle Duster, which tells the awe-inspiring story of a pioneering woman who was often overlooked and underestimated --- a woman who refused to exit a train car meant for white passengers; a woman who brought to light the horrors of lynching in America; a woman who cofounded the NAACP. GOOD NEIGHBORS is this month’s Barnes & Noble Book Club pick. On Tuesday, March 2nd at 3pm ET, Sarah will be discussing her book live on B&N’s Facebook page. This past Tuesday, Julia Claiborne Johnson talked to author Julie Schumacher about her latest novel, BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME, which was January’s B&N selection. If you missed their conversation, you can watch it here. CHRISTIE), Kristin Harmel (THE BOOK OF LOST NAMES), and Vanessa Riley (ISLAND QUEEN). See details about how to get a ticket for this event, which will take place at 8pm ET, here. News & Pop Culture Reader Mail: Marilyn, the Grand Prize winner in our End-of-the-Year Contest, sent the photo that you see above, along with this note: “These wonderful books found a good home. Thanks so much. I can’t wait to cuddle up with them.” Lois wrote, "Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! I just received the three books I won in the End-of-the-Year Contest!!! I'm so excited." Anne wrote, "Thank you. Thank you. I received my books as one of the winners of your year-end contest. My daughter has already borrowed them to get first crack at reading them. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of them before she absconded with them!!! I'm looking forward to reading them as soon as she returns them!" "Firefly Lane" on Netflix: I am hoping to binge watch it this weekend! "Yellowstone" on Peacock: Somehow I missed watching this show, probably because I have never turned on the Paramount Network. It was much easier when there were just three networks. Now I feel like every minute a new one is springing up for only $4.99 a month. That said, we enjoyed the first episode, which came for free, and are now figuring out how to watch the next few seasons. And today I learned that there will be a "Yellowstone" prequel at some point! Last Sunday, I made a Butternut, Orange and Sage Galette, which took most of the afternoon, but it was so worth it! It is one of those recipes where you need to read the entire thing in advance as everything takes 20-30 minutes, but all that time adds up! I froze a second crust for the next time I make a savory galette. I know, I sound soooooo fancy --- savory galette! On Sunday afternoon, I am doing a “What to Read Next” event virtually with the Bernardsville Public Library in New Jersey. I have been looking at lots of March and April titles for this presentation! I already am planning upcoming "Bookaccino Live" events! A reminder that our next "Bookaccino Live" program is this Wednesday, February 10th at 2pm ET; sign up here. I am pulling for Kansas City in the Super Bowl, but I really am rooting for pigs in a blanket, guacamole and queso! Also, I made a GREAT crab nachos recipe a couple of weeks ago that will be a repeat. Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans, forgive me! I think it should be a great game --- a real battle of the quarterbacks. More snow is on the way; it is easier to deal with now that we have the plow on the tractor. Memo to Husband: Do that in November! For two days we were snowed in, but then again, where did I have to go? Read on, and have a great week.
