So far, with online and snail mail donations, we have raised $38,804 of our $50,000 goal. You can read about our plans and donate here. If you would prefer donating via check, please send to: Thank you again for your consideration and your donation. Last Thursday night, we hosted our second "Bookaccino Live" Book Group event. Betty shared this photo of the three books that she won in our End-of-the-Year Contest. She said, “Received my books today from the year-end contest! Can’t wait to start! So excited! Thanks again!” Carol's fudge marble cake mix arrived just in time for her sons' birthdays. Fudge Marble Cake Times Two I am “caked out"! Birthdays for both of the boys within five days has me swearing off chocolate. You can see the cakes above; yes, the emergency delivery of fudge marble cake mix came just in time. I know it’s a mix, but I found that it came out much better this time as I beat the eggs into the oil and water with a whisk, and I actually measured the batter for the fudge part of the mix instead of guessing. My husband constantly tells me that baking is chemistry and science. Well, I was never great at science, which may be the reasons that my baking skills definitely require measuring, often twice. I have had a very busy week of watching previews of upcoming titles; on Wednesday, I think I clocked a solid 4.5 hours of hearing publisher pitches. It sounds like so many of these soon-to-be released books are going to be terrific! My plan this weekend is to sit in front of the fire and just read. It’s been a long time since I have done that. I am sooooo ready for a weekend like that. I finished THE SURVIVORS by Jane Harper late last night, and I am hoping to interview her. She lives in Australia, so we are trying to coordinate a logical time to chat; whenever that is, for her it will be the next day. I always am amused when I have conversations with people who are that far away; I love the idea there is assurance that tomorrow will come. I am happy to share that all of the Bookreporter End-of-the-Year Contest prizes, as well as the "Bookaccino Live" contest prizes, have been mailed out. Greg brought them to the post office on Monday afternoon. Astonishingly, Vickie, a reader in California who won, wrote this message to us on Wednesday: “I was so excited when three books arrived in the mail today that I had won from the year-end contest. Thank you so much. Looking forward to reading them all.” I know we all have post office woe stories, but these books made it across the country in less than 48 hours, and they were sent Media Mail rate. I also heard from Betty, who shared the photo above: “Received my books today from the year-end contest! Can’t wait to start! So excited! Thanks again!” I love this. I also am glad that the boxes, packages and piles of books have left my office. However, the Valentine’s Day prizes are coming in as I type this. Have you entered yet? More on that later in this newsletter. As promised, we've posted the video and podcast of our second "Bookaccino Live" Book Group event, where William Kent Krueger talked about THIS TENDER LAND and answered questions from the audience. I am happy to say that we had our biggest crowd ever at this event! Oh, and a request. Now to this week’s update... Gregg Hurwitz is back with the highly anticipated sixth entry in his Orphan X series, PRODIGAL SON. After being forced to stop his clandestine activities as The Nowhere Man, Evan Smoak gets an urgent request for help from someone he didn't even suspect existed --- his mother. Joe Hartlaub has our review and says that the book has “a pitch-perfect plot shot through with suspense, countless action scenes, and recommendations concerning everything from adult libations and sobriety mantras to weaponry of all manner and sorts. In other words, there is something for everyone here.” He goes on to proclaim, “If you read PRODIGAL SON, you will be a fan of Hurwitz for life if you are not already.” I already am a huge fan, but I am behind on reading and need to get to this one! A couple of weeks ago, I shared my Bookreporter.com Bets On commentary for Melanie Benjamin’s new historical novel, THE CHILDREN’S BLIZZARD. This story of courage on the prairie was inspired by the devastating storm that struck the Great Plains in 1888, threatening the lives of hundreds of immigrant homesteaders, especially schoolchildren. Sarah Rachel Egelman reviews the book for us this week and has this to say about it: “Benjamin’s account of the storm is appropriately chilling. The fear, confusion and pain experienced by the characters are made as real as possible through her prose. Just as the storm is claustrophobic and brutal, so too are many of the relationship dynamics that are explored…. THE CHILDREN’S BLIZZARD is dark and often troubling, but Benjamin’s writing remains elegant throughout.” If you missed my “Bookreporter Talks To” interview with Melanie, you can watch it here and listen to the podcast here. I learned this week that the book was announced as the 2021 One Book South Dakota. One of the most talked-about books of the year thus far is YELLOW WIFE by Sadeqa Johnson, which I raved about in the January 8th newsletter and will be a Bets On pick. Pheby Delores Brown is an enslaved woman who is forced to barter love and freedom while living in the most infamous slave jail in Virginia. According to our reviewer Pamela Kramer, “Johnson's writing is exquisitely, almost unbearably detailed…. Pheby's narrative doesn't just draw us into the life of a ‘mulatto’ during the time before the Civil War. Of course, her story is engrossing and emotional, but it also gives us insight into those who might pass for almost white and how their lives weren't necessarily any better than those whose skin color had not been bleached by generations of rape by white masters.” I had the pleasure of chatting with Sadeqa this week for a “Bookreporter Talks To” interview. It will be up on our YouTube channel early next week, as well as the podcast; we will feature that in next week’s newsletter, along with my Bets On commentary. Continuing this week is our special contest for Gabriela Garcia’s debut novel, OF WOMEN AND SALT, a kaleidoscopic portrait of betrayals --- personal and political, self-inflicted and those done by others --- that have shaped the lives of two extraordinary women. According to bestselling author Roxane Gay, “Gabriela Garcia captures the lives of Cuban women in a world to which they refuse to surrender, and she does so with precision and generosity and beauty." And Angie Cruz, the author of DOMINICANA, says, “I am a sucker for intergenerational family dramas with fraught mother and daughter relationships. Garcia’s vivid details, visceral prose and strong willful women negotiating how to survive in this world are easy to fall for.” We are giving 25 readers the chance to win an advance copy of the book, which releases on March 30th and will be a Bets On selection. To enter, please fill out this form by Thursday, February 4th at noon ET. Also still up and running is our Historical Fiction Author Spotlight & Contest for MASQUE OF HONOR: A Historical Novel of the American South by first-time novelist Sharon Virts, which releases on February 9th and will be a Bets On pick. In this coming-of-age tale set in early 19th-century America, two sons of the Virginia aristocracy risk it all to defend their dreams and determine their own destinies. Susan Koch, an Emmy and Peabody award-winning filmmaker, has glowing praise for Sharon and her fiction debut: “Sharon Virts is a natural storyteller and evocative writer with a keen eye for historical detail and drama. Set in 1816 and based on the true story of the rivalry between two Virginia gentlemen, MASQUE OF HONOR unfolds as an epic tale of romance, politics, ambition and power --- and paying the ultimate price to defend one’s honor.” Would you like to be one of 25 readers who will win a copy of this book? Then fill out this form by Thursday, February 4th at noon ET. If you haven’t entered our ReadingGroupGuides.com contest for Kristin Hannah’s THE FOUR WINDS, which releases this Tuesday, February 2nd, may we suggest you do so now? We are awarding up to 12 digital copies of the audiobook to 30 book groups who would like to listen to it and share their comments on it. This magnificent novel, which will be a Bets On pick, is about love, heroism and hope, set during the Great Depression --- a time when the country was in crisis and at war with itself, millions were out of work, and even the land seemed to have turned against them. To enter, please fill out this form by Wednesday, February 3rd at noon ET. As a special bonus, the audiobook includes a conversation between Kristin and narrator Julia Whelan. You can listen to a short clip of their discussion here and an excerpt from the audiobook here. We also have added the discussion guide, which includes a few questions specifically related to the audiobook. On Wednesday, the 10-episode first season of Netflix’s “Firefly Lane,” which is based on Kristin’s 2008 novel of the same name, will be available. Click here for the latest trailer and here to add it to your Netflix watch list. With THE FOUR WINDS releasing the day before, it promises to be a whirlwind 48 hours for Kristin! If you would like to win a hardcover copy of THE FOUR WINDS, along with THE UNWILLING by John Hart, be sure to enter our Word of Mouth contest by submitting your comments about the books you’ve read. The deadline for your entries is Friday, February 5th at noon ET. In that day’s newsletter, we look forward to featuring our reviews of both these novels. Melanie, who edits Word of Mouth for us, noted this: "THE CHILDREN'S BLIZZARD is definitely trending this contest period, and ANXIOUS PEOPLE is still showing up quite often as well.” Yes, we do pay attention to your submissions. Other books we’re reviewing this week include ROBERT B. PARKER’S SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME by Ace Atkins, in which Spenser and his young protégé, Mattie Sullivan, take on a billionaire money manager running a network of underaged girls for his rich and powerful clients; Tim Dorsey’s TROPIC OF STUPID, which finds Serge A. Storms embarking on a tour to meet his long-lost relatives; A THOUSAND SHIPS, Natalie Haynes’ retelling of the Trojan War from the perspectives of the many women involved in its causes and consequences (it was shortlisted for last year’s Women’s Prize for Fiction); and THE GOOD AMERICAN, Robert D. Kaplan’s eye-opening study of the most influential humanitarian you’ve never heard of --- Bob Gersony, who spent four decades in crisis zones around the world. We also are reviewing SHIPPED by Angie Hockman, which is one of the seven books we’re giving away in this year’s Valentine’s Day contest. The others are MEET ME IN BOMBAY by Jenny Ashcroft (which we reviewed last week), THE POWER COUPLE by Alex Berenson (which we will review in two weeks), THE RETURN by Nicholas Sparks, THE SOULMATE EQUATION by Christina Lauren, TOKYO EVER AFTER by Emiko Jean, and WHEN HARRY MET MINNIE: A True Story of Love and Friendship by Martha Teichner. To enter, all you have to do is fill out this form by Friday, February 12th at noon ET. Please note: Since THE SOULMATE EQUATION and TOKYO EVER AFTER are releasing in May, we will be awarding advance copies to the winners instead of hardcovers. Our series of 24-hour Winter Reading contests return next week. The prize books will be HOW THE ONE-ARMED SISTER SWEEPS HER HOUSE by Cherie Jones, THE KINDEST LIE by Nancy Johnson, THE SURVIVORS by Jane Harper, and THIS CLOSE TO OKAY by Leesa Cross-Smith. The first giveaway will go live on Monday, February 1st at noon ET. We plan to run our reviews of THE KINDEST LIE and THE SURVIVORS next week...and, as I mentioned, fingers crossed for a Jane Harper interview. My latest Bets On pick is THE MYSTERY OF MRS. CHRISTIE by Marie Benedict, which we reviewed earlier this month. Click here for my commentary. Our poll continues to ask which of 20 paperbacks releasing in January you have read or are planning to read. Let us know by clicking here. Reminder: I love looking at what you are excited about. Tiger on HBO: Tom and I watched the first part of this documentary and enjoyed it. We will watch the second half this weekend. Locked Down on HBO Max: It's about a couple who definitely are having issues and are stuck together during the pandemic. While I loathe pandemic plotlines in television series, I did enjoy this one. "Imposters" on Netflix: There are times when I need mindless television in the background or just to take a break. I am on season two of this series, which has some clever moments. Remember I said escape, not depth, here. Laura Ingalls Wilder: Prairie to Page on PBS: I so fear I forgot to tell you about this. It started to air in late December, and the month of free streaming is over. But those with PBS Passport accounts may still view it. I made Baked Jalapeño Poppers for Cory’s birthday, and they were a huge hit. Cory makes another recipe of them in an air fryer. Do I want an air fryer? I am up to yarn five of 10 in my Koigu Pencil Knitting project. I have just been sooooo busy. I am surprised I finished color five! Amaryllis plants continue to bloom around here. And they are staked so none are falling down. The base to make my desk a standing desk arrived, and this weekend I definitely want to get that put together. Maybe next week I will write this newsletter standing up. I need to spend less time sitting! I already see that long cords are going to be critical to the success of this endeavor. Nevertheless, my true goal this weekend is to sit on the couch and read, with a fire in the fireplace. One hurdle: the couch cushions are still out being re-stuffed. I have the patio chair cushions inside, but they are not the same. It's a very amusing look, though! I learned today that the re-stuffed cushions are finally done, and I am going to zip out and get them tomorrow. Oh, and snow is on the way...and Mercury goes retrograde tomorrow, the 30th. Longtime readers know what the latter means! Read on, and have a great week. Special Contest: OF WOMEN AND SALT, Gabriela Garcia's debut novel, is about a daughter's fateful choice, a mother motivated by her own past, and a family legacy that begins in Cuba before either of them were born. The book doesn't release until March 30th, but we're happy to award an advance copy to 25 readers. To enter, please fill out this form by Thursday, February 4th at noon ET. OF WOMEN AND SALT by Gabriela Garcia (Fiction) From 19th-century cigar factories to present-day detention centers, from Cuba to Mexico, Gabriela Garcia's OF WOMEN AND SALT is a kaleidoscopic portrait of betrayals --- personal and political, self-inflicted and those done by others --- that have shaped the lives of these extraordinary women. A haunting meditation on the choices of mothers, the legacy of the memories they carry, and the tenacity of women who choose to tell their stories despite those who wish to silence them, this is more than a diaspora story; it is a story of America’s most tangled, honest, human roots. Historical Fiction Author Spotlight & Contest: In a coming-of-age tale set in early 19th-century America, two sons of the Virginia aristocracy risk it all to defend their dreams and determine their own destinies. We have 25 copies of Sharon Virts' debut novel, MASQUE OF HONOR, to give away to those who would like to read the book, which releases on February 9th. To enter, please fill out this form by Thursday, February 4th at noon ET. MASQUE OF HONOR: A Historical Novel of the American South by Sharon Virts (Historical Fiction) When Armistead is challenged by corruption in the political machine and is denied a seat in the US Congress, the two become embroiled in a bitter dispute that sets in motion an irrevocable chain of events, leading them to the dueling grounds and an outcome that changes everything. Based on historical events of the 1819 Mason-McCarty duel, MASQUE OF HONOR is a story of courage, conviction and the cost of sacrificing one life to forge another. Click here to read more in our Historical Fiction Author Spotlight Special Contest on ReadingGroupGuides.com: ReadingGroupGuides.com is proud to host a very special audiobook contest for THE FOUR WINDS by Kristin Hannah, which releases on February 2nd. This upcoming Bookreporter.com Bets On pick is an epic novel of love, heroism and hope, set against the backdrop of one of America’s most defining eras --- the Great Depression. THE FOUR WINDS (Audiobook) written by Kristin Hannah, read by Julia Whelan (Historical Fiction) In this uncertain and dangerous time, Elsa Martinelli --- like so many of her neighbors --- must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or go west, to California, in search of a better life. THE FOUR WINDS is an indelible portrait of America and the American Dream, as seen through the eyes of one indomitable woman whose courage and sacrifice will come to define a generation. - Click here for the discussion guide. Click here to enter the contest. Bookreporter.com Bets On: THE MYSTERY OF MRS. CHRISTIE by Marie Benedict (Historical Mystery) There are some facts that are known. Christie had recently lost her mother, and she had lost faith in her marriage and her husband. Then she packed a bag and headed off, ostensibly for a week away. Her car was found damaged, with her license and warm coat inside. Clearly these were left as clues lest there was any doubt that it was Christie who had abandoned the vehicle. But what followed were dead ends. The master storyteller seemed to have vanished. - Click here to read more about the book. Click here to read more of Carol's commentary.
