Carol's latest "Bookreporter Talks To" interview is with Lisa Gardner, On January 13th, we hosted our first “Bookaccino Live” event of the year. Last Sunday, Carol had a lovely time chatting with Cassandra King Conroy (bottom center) about her most recent book, TELL ME A STORY, a memoir about her life with Pat Conroy, as part of the 2021 International Pulpwood Queens and Timber Guys Book Club Convention Girlfriend Weekend Zoomathon Slumber Party, which was hosted by Kathy Murphy (top left). There's a funny story attached to Carol's tiara that you see above. Read on below to hear all about it! Shelving Books by Color At last week’s “Bookaccino Live” event, people commented on the background in my office studio. Remember how I said I would not shelve books by color? Confession here: The backdrop of my set for “Bookaccino Live” and “Bookreporter Talks To” interviews is all blue books. Here’s why. First of all, the aqua wall behind the bookshelves is not getting repainted. So we already have color there. We tried various books as backgrounds, but realized that shelving in one color or blocks of color was less distracting, and it made it look more like a solid wall, especially against the aqua. Also, when you light a room for video, it’s amazing how light will reflect off of white or metallics. So in mid-November, Greg and I traipsed around the house and collected all the blue-toned books. And it worked! The family room also has a number of books in it, and now a lot less blue ones are there. Last night, we hosted our second “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event with William Kent Krueger as our guest. It was such a fun evening as we discussed THIS TENDER LAND in depth. Four readers joined us "on stage" to ask questions as well. Though I have interviewed Kent about this book before, and we have had a number of conversations over these past few years, I still learned so much about him and his work during this event. We will be posting the video and podcast next week. By the way, immediately after the event, my mailbox lit up with notes from viewers. I share some of them in the Reader Mail section below. They are still coming in! Our next “Bookaccino Live” Book Group guest will be Kim Michele Richardson, the author of THE BOOK WOMAN OF TROUBLESOME CREEK. We selected this book for discussion as it has been a top pick for many months on ReadingGroupGuides.com in our “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” feature. The event will take place on Thursday, March 25th at 8pm ET. Want to join us? Then sign up here! Now up on our YouTube channel is our "Bookaccino Live" afternoon event from last week, where I talked about a number of books releasing between January 12th and February 2nd, along with seven from March. Click here to watch the video, and a list of all the featured titles can be found here. My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Lisa Gardner, whose new thriller, BEFORE SHE DISAPPEARED, released this week. Frankie Elkin is a middle-aged woman and a recovering alcoholic who spends her life tracking down those who live in marginalized communities. In her newest case, Frankie is searching for a Haitian teenager who vanished from her high school months earlier. Even though she gets resistance from the police and the victim's family, Frankie will stop at nothing to discover the truth, even if it means putting her own life in danger. In the interview, Lisa talked in-depth about her unique protagonist, who is tied between average life and crime. She also discussed some of the challenges she had in researching and writing the modern-day aspects of this stand-alone thriller. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast. We have our review of BEFORE SHE DISAPPEARED this week from Norah Piehl, who calls it “a propulsive mystery, one with enough twists and turns to keep even the most seasoned readers of the genre guessing until the end. But it’s also --- perhaps more importantly --- a fascinating character study, as Frankie wrestles with her own demons even as she grows closer to her goal. She is a recovering alcoholic, and Gardner brilliantly illustrates her daily struggle with her addiction, as well as how she uses informal networks like Alcoholics Anonymous to understand the new communities in which she finds herself.” This week, we are kicking off a special contest for OF WOMEN AND SALT by first-time novelist Gabriela Garcia. The book takes place in Miami and introduces readers to Jeanette, the daughter of a Cuban immigrant who is battling addiction. She is determined to learn more about her family history from her mother, Carmen, and decides to take in the daughter of a neighbor detained by ICE. Still wrestling with the trauma of displacement, Carmen must process the difficult relationship she has with her own mother while trying to raise Jeanette. Steadfast in her quest for understanding, Jeanette travels to Cuba to see her grandmother and reckon with secrets from the past that are destined to erupt. We have 25 advance copies to give away to those who would like to read the book, which releases on March 30th. To enter, please fill out this form by Thursday, February 4th at noon ET. I love this novel so much that it will be a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection; it has a wonderful voice! I will be scheduling an interview with Gabriela. We also are excited to give away copies of another debut novel, MASQUE OF HONOR by Sharon Virts, in our Historical Fiction Author Spotlight, which we have brought back after a long hiatus. General Armistead Mason and John “Jack” Mason McCarty are brothers-in-law, second cousins and descendants of founding father George Mason IV. Together they set out to find love, acceptance and honor on their own merit. While Armistead demands respect and strives for perfection, Jack looks to forge his own path. When Armistead is challenged by corruption in the political machine and is denied a congressional seat, the two become embroiled in a bitter dispute that sets in motion an irrevocable chain of events. If you’d like to be one of the 25 readers who will be awarded a copy of the book, all you have to do is fill out this form by Thursday, February 4th at noon ET. This, too, will be a Bets On selection, and I will be interviewing Sharon in a couple of weeks. I was struck by her attention to period detail. On ReadingGroupGuides.com, we are featuring a BIG contest for the audiobook edition of THE FOUR WINDS, Kristin Hannah’s upcoming historical novel, which releases on February 2nd. I read an advance copy a few months ago, and yes, it will be a Bets On pick. Here’s what it’s about: Texas, 1934. Millions are out of work, and a drought has broken the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as the crops are failing, the water is drying up and dust threatens to bury them all. One of the darkest periods of the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl era, has arrived with a vengeance. In this uncertain and dangerous time, Elsa Martinelli --- like so many of her neighbors --- must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or go west, to California, in search of a better life. We’re giving 30 book groups the chance to win up to 12 digital copies of the audiobook, which is read by Julia Whelan, and share their comments on it. All the contest details can be found here, and the deadline for your entries is Wednesday, February 3rd at noon ET. As a special bonus, the audiobook includes a conversation between Kristin and Julia. Click here to listen to a short clip of their discussion, and an excerpt from the audiobook can be found here. Trust that you will want to talk about this one, even if you are not in a book group. And I am looking forward to interviewing Kristin! We also are giving away the hardcover edition of THE FOUR WINDS in our Word of Mouth contest, along with THE UNWILLING by John Hart. Let us know by Friday, February 5th at noon ET what books you’ve read, and you’ll be in the running to receive these novels. We will feature reviews of both in that day’s newsletter. In addition to BEFORE SHE DISAPPEARED, this week’s review lineup includes THE DOCTORS BLACKWELL, Janice P. Nimura’s fascinating biography of Elizabeth Blackwell, who in 1849 became the first woman in America to receive an M.D., and her younger sister Emily, who was actually the more brilliant physician; THE WIFE UPSTAIRS, Rachel Hawkins’ debut novel for adults, which the publisher describes as “[a] delicious twist on a Gothic classic [that] pairs Southern charm with atmospheric domestic suspense, perfect for fans of B.A. Paris and Megan Miranda.”; Gabriel Byrne’s memoir, WALKING WITH GHOSTS, in which the actor reflects on his childhood growing up in a now almost vanished Ireland, stardom in Hollywood and Broadway, and his battle with addiction and the ambivalence of fame; and TRIO, a satire by William Boyd that revolves around a producer, a novelist and an actress --- and a doomed movie set --- in the summer of 1968. WHAT COULD BE SAVED by Liese O’Halloran Schwarz, which we reviewed last week, is my latest Bets On pick. Click here for my commentary. If you missed my interview with Liese, be sure to check out the video and the podcast. Please keep in mind our 16th annual Valentine’s Day contest, which kicked off last week. We’re giving five readers the opportunity to win seven books that we think you will fall in love with: MEET ME IN BOMBAY by Jenny Ashcroft (which we also review this week), THE POWER COUPLE by Alex Berenson, THE RETURN by Nicholas Sparks, SHIPPED by Angie Hockman (which we will review next week), THE SOULMATE EQUATION by Christina Lauren, TOKYO EVER AFTER by Emiko Jean, and WHEN HARRY MET MINNIE: A True Story of Love and Friendship by Martha Teichner. To enter, please fill out this form by Friday, February 12th at noon ET. Please note: THE SOULMATE EQUATION and TOKYO EVER AFTER aren’t releasing until May, so advance copies will be given away for these books in lieu of hardcovers. For our latest poll, we’ve listed 20 paperbacks releasing this month, and we’re asking you which, if any, you have read or are planning to read. Click here to let us know. Our previous poll asked about your reading goals for 2021. 18% of you are planning to read 51-100 print books this year, while 12% are aiming to read more than 100(!). 41% would like to read between 1 and 30 e-books, and 31% plan to listen to 1-30 audiobooks. Click here for all the results. Last Sunday, I had a wonderful time interviewing Cassandra King Conroy about her most recent book, TELL ME A STORY, a memoir about her life with Pat Conroy, as part of the 2021 International Pulpwood Queens and Timber Guys Book Club Convention Girlfriend Weekend Zoomathon Slumber Party. When we left off last week, I was in search of a tiara. I had been given one for a milestone birthday, but I could not find it anywhere! About an hour before the event, when I was contemplating knitting one out of wire (yes, you can laugh; I was too), I walked into the living room and saw the Christmas tree. It had stars on it that I grabbed and wired together to make a crown of sorts in my color! Bravo. You can see photo documentation of this above. Yes, I am a good sport. Cassandra was such fun to talk to. I loved the book. Losing Pat so young was a huge loss. I cannot believe it will be five years in March. They had a wonderful, albeit too short, life together. I loved her stories about what it meant to be married to another writer. News & Pop Culture Reader Mail: Marge wrote, “Can you post that great seed bread recipe? It sure looks wonderful.” Here you go: Kneadlessly Simple Pumpkin Seed Boule. Feef wrote, “Thank you for everything that you do to keep me inspired to read and for giving me great selections to choose from. I also suffer from tsundoku as most of the books that you review sound interesting to me and continue to pile up on the shelf. A quick question: I have been receiving the ReadingGroupGuides emails for several years and love them. Recently I also have been getting the Bookreporter emails. I see that you are the facilitator for both, and I wondered what the difference is, or if you have combined with another site to offer similar information. I get that RGG is geared to book clubs and Bookreporter may not be. Is that the only difference? Either way, I enjoy them both, and I frequently suggest that book club members of our Bad Girls Book Club refer to that site as well. I'll promote Bookreporter too.” Yes, both websites are part of The Book Report Network. Bookreporter newsletters are geared to all readers, while our focus on ReadingGroupGuides.com is more for those in book groups, though we have been told by many readers who are not in book groups that they enjoy RGG as well. Some features are cross-promoted, and some are unique to each site. You would not be wrong to subscribe to both. You can sign up for any of our newsletters that you want here. Nancy wrote, “A question for you, maybe for the February 10th Bookaccino Live session, maybe for a newsletter, maybe just for me: With all the contests that you run --- whether they're looking for just a book title or additional comments --- how many times may we enter? If more than one entry is allowed, can we submit the same book title and review, or do we have to write up a different book for each entry?” I'm glad you asked. For all of the contests, except for Word of Mouth, you can only enter once. The first thing we do is take out all duplicates, so do not think that you are gaining anything by signing up more than once; it just takes us time to delete extra responses. For Word of Mouth, you may submit more than one title for each contest period. You cannot submit the same title more than once. Let me know if this does not answer your question! And yes, I will discuss this at the next “live” event. If I do not, please ask it in the Q&A! Deb wrote, “Just thanking you and your crew for a delightful evening with William Kent Krueger. I have followed him since he was writing ORDINARY GRACE. He gave a talk about his publisher being uncertain about stepping outside the Cork O'Connor box. Kent was a bit nervous about how ORDINARY GRACE would be received. We are all grateful that it soared and that THIS TENDER LAND was born. I read your newsletter regularly. I look for some of the books on NetGalley and review them. Our suburban St. Paul neighborhood has had a book group (Novel Women) since 1996. Your suggestions are always helpful. Keep up the good work. Thanks again. It was lovely to 'meet you' and see Mr. Krueger again.” Bob and Ann wrote this about our event with Kent: “Just wonderful. Thank you.” Nancy wrote, “This was great! I loved the discussion, the questions and answers. So special to learn more of the backstories from Kent. I wanted him to know how much I loved his book. On the last page, I read every word very slowly because I didn’t want it to end.” Richard wrote, “Just a quick note to say thank you for the wonderful, informative book review with William Kent Krueger. I have enjoyed all of his works. Your group was a pleasure to be a part of.” Kathryn wrote, "I definitely want to receive your newsletters and can’t wait to sign up for the next great author event, as well as future ones. I just wanted to invite Kent over for dinner. What a neat man!" Elizabeth wrote, "Thank you for facilitating tonight. I really enjoyed listening to William Kent Krueger and learning about his process and inspiration. I look forward to the next discussion!" Kay wrote, "Another wonderful evening! Thank you for making all of this possible! "Bridgerton" on Netflix: I loved it. It's great escape watching! "Bling Empire" on Netflix: Okay, I know I said I do not watch reality television, but somehow I happened upon "Bling Empire." Think Crazy Rich Asians but set in LA. It’s over-the-top fashion name dropping and consumer consumption. I watched and wondered how these people are coping in the pandemic. We may need an extra episode about that. I think they would not be coping well. Tiger on HBO: I want to watch this two-part documentary about Tiger Woods. Locked Down on HBO Max: I did not get to watch this last week, so I will try again this weekend. We are getting our family room couch cushions restuffed. So Tom got the genius idea to bring in the patio furniture cushions so we have something to sit on. It’s pretty amusing, but it works. Now I need to find time to pick them up when they are ready; I needed the holiday on Monday to find time to drop them off! I still am researching standing desk options. Thank you to those of you who shared ideas on this. Right now, I am looking at a frame that will work under my existing desk, and hopefully I will make a decision on this over the weekend. I am spending WAY too much time sitting these days. I was thinking about a treadmill desk, but there is no way I am coordinated enough to do that. It would be like the dog on "The Jetsons" who got whirled around and around. It is birthday week around our house! Cory turns 26 on Saturday and Greg turns 31 on Thursday. I am still 27! Imagine that. Every year they both want fudge marble cake with chocolate frosting. Trying to find this cake mix is so frustrating. I forget every year that this is a huge production. I confess that last night in a crazy moment, I ordered three boxes (as it is only sold that way) of what is clearly over-priced cake mix to be delivered here on Saturday via Amazon. May it please arrive early enough to make the cake and frost it! BUT it cannot be found in any store around here. And hey, at $8(!) a box, it’s still cheaper than a store-bought cake --- and they want homemade. Read on, and have a great week. New Special Contest: OF WOMEN AND SALT, Gabriela Garcia's debut novel, is about a daughter's fateful choice, a mother motivated by her own past, and a family legacy that begins in Cuba before either of them were born. The book doesn't release until March 30th, but we're happy to award an advance copy to 25 readers. To enter, please fill out this form by Thursday, February 4th at noon ET. OF WOMEN AND SALT by Gabriela Garcia (Fiction) From 19th-century cigar factories to present-day detention centers, from Cuba to Mexico, Gabriela Garcia's OF WOMEN AND SALT is a kaleidoscopic portrait of betrayals --- personal and political, self-inflicted and those done by others --- that have shaped the lives of these extraordinary women. A haunting meditation on the choices of mothers, the legacy of the memories they carry, and the tenacity of women who choose to tell their stories despite those who wish to silence them, this is more than a diaspora story; it is a story of America’s most tangled, honest, human roots. Laura Preston is an artist who has found some success, but also clearly is drifting. She is very different from her older sister, Bea, and her mother, who is being swept into dementia. Laura is contacted by someone claiming to know the whereabouts of her brother, Philip, who had disappeared when her family lived in Bangkok in the '70s. He was eight at the time. Against the wishes of her sister and her fiancé, Laura heads to Thailand to see what she will learn. And yes, she locates her brother. But the brother she finds is an adult, and there are lost decades between them. Just what happened to him? We then flashback to Bangkok in the '70s. Robert Preston has an engineering job that has the family stationed there. He’s on a project building a dam that was to have taken one year, but it has been prolonged to more than three. Genevieve, his wife, is putting on a bright face in Bangkok, trying to make life there normal for the family, but the country is very challenging. And it becomes even more so when Philip disappears. The marriage of Robert and Genevieve is fraught with tension --- and readers are taken inside both of their points of view, as well as those of the girls. - Click here to read more about the book.
