Time to Clean Out the Fridge, the Freezer and the Cabinets
Wednesday night was one of the biggest nights in publishing, as the National Book Awards were presented. It’s always a wonderful evening of bookish celebration, which was emceed by LeVar Burton, who you may remember as the host of "Reading Rainbow." He was amusing, irreverent and passionate, which makes for a great host.
The first award, the Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community, was given to Oren Teicher, who recently retired as the CEO of the American Booksellers Association. He has been a real champion of indie booksellers for decades. He was introduced by Ann Patchett, who warmly shared anecdotes about his love of books and bookselling. Besides being an author, she is the co-owner of Parnassus Books in Nashville. I love that Oren worked at bookstores every holiday season. I always wish that more people throughout the world of publishing spent time on the selling floor. I think a connection with readers like that is invaluable.
Edmund White was given the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. I had sat next to him at a media lunch a few weeks ago, and he was the perfect lunch seatmate, as he was both wickedly smart and devilishly entertaining. We had such fun dishing. At that time, he had not written a word of his acceptance speech, so it was really lovely to hear his irreverently funny comments on Wednesday night. My favorite line was, "Writers love to complain about how difficult it is to write. Maybe they feel guilty about not having a full-time job.”
I confess that I had not read any of the nominees this year, but the winners of both the nonfiction and fiction prizes, Sarah M. Broom and Susan Choi, respectively, gave beautifully passionate acceptance speeches. Sarah, who wrote THE YELLOW HOUSE, was influenced by her mother, who raised 12 children in, yes, that yellow house, which was a shotgun-style home in New Orleans. She painted a wonderful picture of her family in her acceptance speech; I can imagine her mom in the audience beaming. You can watch it here starting at the 2:11:40 mark. Susan wrote TRUST EXERCISE; you can hear her acceptance speech at the 2:22:45 mark. She is grateful that she makes her living in a world of books and writing. The entire night was a homage to the written word with a room filled with people who are passionate about books and literacy.
The other winners were SIGHT LINES by Arthur Sze (Poetry), BARON WENCKHEIM'S HOMECOMING by László Krasznahorkai, translated by Ottilie Mulzet (Translated Literature), and 1919: The Year That Changed America, by Martin W. Sandler (Young People’s Literature). You can watch the entire event here.
This week, we added a new “Bookreporter Talks To” podcast featuring Shari Lapena, the author of SOMEONE WE KNOW. We originally featured this interview on video and are excited to share the podcast with you now.
Among this week’s featured review titles are A MINUTE TO MIDNIGHT, David Baldacci’s second thriller starring FBI Agent Atlee Pine, who returns to her Georgia hometown to investigate her twin sister's abduction, only to encounter a serial killer; the latest Spenser mystery, ROBERT B. PARKER’S ANGEL EYES by Ace Atkins, in which the legendary Boston PI heads to the City of Angels to meet old friends and new enemies in a baffling missing person case; and THE SIBERIAN DILEMMA, Martin Cruz Smith’s new Arkady Renko novel, which finds the iconic Moscow investigator traveling deep into Siberia to locate missing journalist Tatiana Petrovna.
A MINUTE TO MIDNIGHT is one of the books we’re awarding to the winners of our Word of Mouth contest; the other is THE CONFESSION CLUB by Elizabeth Berg. Let us know by Friday, December 6th at noon ET what books you’ve read, and you’ll be in the running to receive both these novels.

Submit your comments about the audiobooks you’ve listened to by Monday, December 2nd at noon ET for your chance to win both these audio titles.
Other books we’re reviewing this week include THE SECOND SLEEP, Robert Harris’ historical thriller about a young priest who is determined to learn the truth about the death of his predecessor; THE OLD SUCCESS, the 25th installment in Martha Grimes’ Richard Jury mystery series, in which the Scotland Yard detective sets out to discover if three gruesome killings, though very different in execution, are connected; and television personality Frances Schultz’s CALIFORNIA COOKING AND SOUTHERN STYLE: 100 Great Recipes, Inspired Menus, and Gorgeous Table Settings, which arrives just in time for the holiday season (many thanks to Jesse Kornbluth for sharing his review, which originally ran on his site, HeadButler.com).
You can see me talking about some of this week’s titles in our latest promo video here.

Gladys wrote and asked: “What’s a podcast?” The dictionary definition of a podcast is: "A digital audio file made available on the Internet for downloading to a computer or mobile device, typically available as a series, new installments of which can be received by subscribers automatically. The term Podcast is actually a portmanteau of iPod and Broadcast." You can listen to our podcasts without downloading any software or using an app by visiting our podcast.bookreporter.com page.
Vickie from Virginia wrote, “I just got the lovely book THE DESERTER that I won from your group via your YouTube contest. I love the cover, and having the autographed copy is wonderful! I have read most of Nelson DeMille’s books, and I am so excited to have a book signed by him and his son. I look forward to reading it and know that I will enjoy it since he is a fantastic storyteller! I also look forward to more in this series and appreciate your introducing me to it. All the best for continued success with your site.”
Diane from Ohio wrote, “Just wanted to say thank you Carol to you and your staff. Your Bets On books are usually some of my go-to titles, especially for book club! You guys are doing a great job as well as an appreciated service!”
Sheri wrote this about receiving BLUE MOON by Lee Child and the aforementioned THE DESERTER in our Word of Mouth contest: “We received the books, and I scored major brownie points with my husband Ken who said ‘cool,’ which is high praise :) I know he will enjoy reading two of his favorite authors. Thanks again!”
Linda said, “Christmas came early to my house! I just received THE GUARDIANS and WHAT HAPPENS IN PARADISE that I won through your Word of Mouth contest. Two great authors! Thank you so much.”
Jen, one of our readers from Stone Harbor, shared this story about the woman who knitted all the sweaters that Tom Hanks wears as Mr. Rogers in the movie A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.
"Dare Me" on USA Network: Here’s a trailer for "Dare Me," which is based on the book by Megan Abbott. It premieres on December 29th at 10pm ET/PT.
Miami Book Fair: The Fair has been going on during the evenings all week, but this is the big weekend. If anyone is going and would like to report on it for us, let me know.
I rarely go to the movies, but last weekend we all went to see Ford v Ferrari. Tom and the boys love cars and car racing, so this was a perfect family outing, and we saw it on a Titan Luxe screen, as I knew they wanted to see it in the “perfect” place. I loved the film as much as they did. Totally enjoyable.
As promised, here’s a link to my Black Bean Chili recipe that some of you requested. It would be nice to make up a pot to enjoy while prepping for Thanksgiving on Wednesday night, or when you are tired of turkey next weekend. We usually do take-out pizza that night. I have heard from pizzeria owners that the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Super Bowl are their two busiest days!
This weekend will be about cooking prep. I am planning to get the cornbread made, as well as the cranberry relish, and I need to find the rest of the recipes. But before that, I will do my annual clearing of the cupboards, fridge and freezer, ostensibly to make room for ingredients, and leftovers.
Read on, and have a great five days. We will be back in your mailbox on Wednesday the 27th, updating two days early so we can duck out for a long weekend.

DESK 88: Eight Progressive Senators Who Changed America by Sherrod Brown (History/Politics)
Audiobook available, read by Sherrod Brown
Since his election to the U.S. Senate in 2006, Ohio’s Sherrod Brown has sat on the Senate floor at a mahogany desk with a proud history. In DESK 88, he tells the story of eight of the Senators who were there before him. They range from Hugo Black, who helped to lift millions of American workers out of poverty, to Robert F. Kennedy, whose eyes were opened by an undernourished Mississippi child and who then spent the rest of his life afflicting the comfortable. Brown revives forgotten figures such as Idaho’s Glen Taylor, a singing cowboy who taught himself economics and stood up to segregationists, and offers new insights into George McGovern, who fought to feed the poor around the world even amid personal and political calamities. He also writes about Herbert Lehman of New York, Al Gore Sr. of Tennessee, Theodore Francis Green of Rhode Island, and William Proxmire of Wisconsin. Reviewed by Stuart Shiffman.
THE WINTER ARMY: The World War II Odyssey of the 10th Mountain Division, America's Elite Alpine Warriors by Maurice Isserman (History)
Audiobook available, read by Brian Troxell
At the start of World War II, the US Army had two cavalry divisions --- and no mountain troops. The German Wehrmacht, in contrast, had many well-trained and battle-hardened mountain divisions. Starting from scratch, the US Army developed a unique military fighting force, the 10th Mountain Division, drawn from the ranks of civilian skiers, mountaineers and others with outdoor experience. The resulting mix of Ivy League students, park rangers, Olympic skiers and European refugees formed the first specialized alpine fighting force in US history. By the time it deployed to Italy at the beginning of 1945, this ragtag group had coalesced into a tight-knit unit. In the months that followed, at a terrible cost, they spearheaded the Allied drive in Italy to final victory. Reviewed by Curtis Edmonds.
THE DEEP by Rivers Solomon with Daveed Diggs, William Hutson and Jonathan Snipes (Post-Apocalyptic Science Fiction)

Yetu holds the memories for her people --- water-dwelling descendants of pregnant African slave women thrown overboard by slave owners --- who live idyllic lives in the deep. Their past, too traumatic to be remembered regularly, is forgotten by everyone except for the historian. This demanding role has been bestowed on Yetu, who remembers for everyone, but the memories are destroying her. So she flees to the surface and discovers a world her people left behind long ago. Yetu will learn more than she ever expected to about her own past --- and about the future of her people. If they are all to survive, they’ll need to reclaim the memories, reclaim their identity --- and own who they really are. Reviewed by Sarah Rachel Egelman.
