Carol's latest "Bookreporter Talks To" interview and podcast is with Raymond Khoury,
whose new novel, EMPIRE OF LIES, is now in stores.
Click on the photo above for the video and here for the podcast.
Carol is reading and loving LADY CLEMENTINE by Marie Benedict, which releases on January 7th.
Carol was very happy to get a copy of Elton John's autobiography, ME, which releases on Tuesday,
along with the super cool tote bag that you see above.
In August, we featured Carol's video interview with Fiona Davis, whose new novel is
THE CHELSEA GIRLS. We now have added a podcast of their discussion,
which you can listen to by clicking on the photo above.
Carol will be interviewing six authors at the Morristown Festival of Books on Saturday:
Marie Benedict, Pam Jenoff, Marjan Kamali, Jennifer Robson, Whitney Scharer and Beatriz Williams.
All of them have written books that we have reviewed here.
A Book Festival…and a Long Weekend!
The houseplants are all inside, repotted and cleaned up. I really like the way they look right now, but am not looking forward to watering in the “indoor months” ahead. I got a funny note from a reader last week in reference to my line about first bringing the plants into the garage so the bugs could crawl out. Donna asked, “Regarding bringing your plants into the garage to acclimate them to warmer temps, what makes you sure that the crawly things DO exit?” Ha, Donna was right. Last night I saw a large bug crawling around one of the pots, and I know it’s not a typical “house bug.” It jumped, a lot. And as I was repotting, I saw some tiny bugs moving around. I feel like this gardening project has some Stephen King overtones to it.
Tomorrow I will be moderating three panels at the Morristown Festival of Books. I hope to see some of you there. You can see the complete schedule for the Festival here. All of the authors who I will be interviewing --- Marie Benedict, Pam Jenoff, Marjan Kamali, Jennifer Robson, Whitney Scharer and Beatriz Williams --- have written books that we have reviewed here. If you are there, please be sure to come up and say hi. I love that we have a book festival that is as robust as this, so close to home. Doing a bit of “ahead reading,” I am enjoying Marie Benedict's LADY CLEMENTINE, which will be in stores on January 7th. In keeping with her tradition of writing about strong women beside powerful men, here she writes about Clementine Churchill. I am enjoying it.
Then, next Sunday the 20th, I will be at the White Plains Public Library at 1:30pm for a presentation called “What Should I Read Next?" They are taking reservations here, and I have heard the open seats are filling up quickly.
On Wednesday, Raymond Khoury stopped by our office for a “Bookreporter Talks To” interview. We first met when he wrote THE LAST TEMPLAR back in 2006, and it's been a while since he was in New York (he lives in London), so it was wonderful to catch up with him about his latest book, EMPIRE OF LIES, which we reviewed last week. We talked about much more than just the book, including the genesis of his friendship with Steve Berry and a conversation about his background, which I think infused so much of this novel. We have it on video, as well as on a podcast.
Also this week, we posted a podcast of my interview with Fiona Davis, whose new novel is THE CHELSEA GIRLS. We are catching up on a few of the interviews that were on video, but are still releasing as podcasts.
Typically we like to have the author guests for our “Bookreporter Talks To” series be a surprise. But for an upcoming one, I am asking if you have questions you would like me to ask of Heather Morris, the author of THE TATTOOIST OF AUSCHWITZ and the newly released CILKA'S JOURNEY. She is in from Australia doing a four-location tour in the U.S., and I am interviewing her on October 29th. Please send your question to me by Monday, October 21st with the subject line "Question for Heather."
We have 13 reviews to share with you this week. Among them are WHAT HAPPENS IN PARADISE, Elin Hilderbrand’s follow-up to last year’s WINTER IN PARADISE, in which secret lives and new loves emerge in the bright Caribbean sunlight; NINTH HOUSE, a dark fantasy from YA author Leigh Bardugo, who has written her first novel for adults; INSIDE OUT, actress Demi Moore’s bold memoir that lays bare the trials and traumas of her youth in an effort to better understand herself and her damaged family’s history; THE 19th CHRISTMAS, James Patterson and Maxine Paetro’s new Women’s Murder Club thriller, which finds the month of December upended for Detective Lindsay Boxer and company thanks to a criminal mastermind; and QUANTUM, Patricia Cornwell’s first book in a series featuring Captain Calli Chase --- a NASA pilot, quantum physicist and cybercrime investigator.

In other book club news, Angie Cruz’s latest novel, DOMINICANA (which we reviewed a couple of weeks ago), is the first pick in “Good Morning America’s” new book club, “Cover to Cover”. Here’s what “GMA” has to say about the book: “Inspired by her own mother, Cruz tells the harrowing and poignant story of a 15-year-old girl who immigrates to New York City in the 1960s from the Dominican Republic, leaving her entire family behind in hopes of building a life for them here in the U.S. It's a story about strength, sacrifice and finding your voice, and it's the perfect novel to kick off our new series and to honor National Hispanic Heritage Month this October.” Click here for more about “Cover to Cover” and DOMINICANA, and check out the discussion guide that we added on ReadingGroupGuides.com here. Also, the winners of the Nobel Prize for Literature have been announced for both last year and this year. The 2018 prize (which had been postponed due to a scandal at the Swedish Academy, the institution responsible for choosing the Nobel Laureates in Literature) has been awarded to Olga Tokarczuk "for a narrative imagination that with encyclopedic passion represents the crossing of boundaries as a form of life." The 2019 prize goes to Peter Handke "for an influential work that with linguistic ingenuity has explored the periphery and the specificity of human experience."

Reader Mail:
Barbara wrote, “I recently finished THIS TENDER LAND, which I was thrilled to win in your Fall Preview contest. I was a big fan of ORDINARY GRACE and was looking forward to the release of William Kent Krueger's new stand-alone book. It met all of my expectations...a story of courage, loss and redemption with characters I loved. I did not want it to end!! Thanks for one of my favorite books of the year.” Sandy also wrote about THIS TENDER LAND: “It is so well-written. I can see the characters when I close my eyes. Read it in three days. Loved the epilogue. Told me everything I wanted to know.”
What’s Happening on ReadingGroupGuides.com: I shot a video that will update you on what’s new for book groups this month on our book group site. You can see it here.
Pumpkin Muffins: These are quite wonderful. I found the recipe last weekend, and they were a big hit. Amusingly, I made up a batch of pumpkin spices for it.
Morning Brew: I have been reading this news source over the past week, and they have shared some interesting pieces.
I just added an event to my calendar for Thursday, November 14th from 6:30-8:30pm at the HarperCollins offices, where Book Club Girl presents "A Night Out" with Susan Wiggs (whose latest novel is THE OYSTERVILLE SEWING CIRCLE) and Alena Dillon (whose debut novel, MERCY HOUSE, releases on February 11th). I am looking forward to interviewing them! Click here for all the details and to purchase your tickets.
Elton John’s autobiography, ME, is in stores on Tuesday, and thus I was super happy to get a copy a few days in advance, as well as a very, very cool tote bag!
We’re closed on Monday to give the staff a break between Labor Day and Thanksgiving. Greg is headed to Portland, OR for the long weekend. He wants to do some lighthousing and off-roading out there.
I am looking forward to kicking it back a notch on Sunday and Monday. I started to knit a shawl that has a pattern that is more complicated than just knitting in a circle. I built a spreadsheet to make it easier to follow. A few of you asked for the pattern for a shawl that I was wearing in one of the videos a few weeks ago. It’s a ruana pattern that I have in my pattern box and will look around for. I made it about 15 years ago with Prism yarns that I am not sure are still available. I do remember “changing it up” a lot. I mean, really, why follow the pattern?
Read on, and have a great week.

BLOWOUT: Corrupted Democracy, Rogue State Russia, and the Richest, Most Destructive Industry on Earth by Rachel Maddow (Political Science/Geopolitics)
Audiobook available, read by Rachel Maddow
In 2010, the words “earthquake swarm” entered the lexicon in Oklahoma. That same year, a trove of Michael Jackson memorabilia --- including his iconic crystal-encrusted white glove --- was sold at auction for over $1 million to a guy who was, officially, just the lowly forestry minister of the tiny nation of Equatorial Guinea. And in 2014, Ukrainian revolutionaries raided the palace of their ousted president and found a zoo of peacocks, gilded toilets, and a floating restaurant modeled after a Spanish galleon. Unlikely as it might seem, there is a thread connecting these events, and Rachel Maddow follows it to its crooked source: the unimaginably lucrative and equally corrupting oil and gas industry.
