Carol thanks our reader Pamela for giving her the delicious candy bar that you see above,
which is semisweet dark chocolate with cayenne pepper and cinnamon.
It's precisely the flavor she was looking for in last week's newsletter.
On the right is Carol's peonies as they looked last weekend before this week's torrential rain.
She fears seeing peony petals all over the ground when she returns home from Book Expo.
This is a milestone week for Bookreporter. I went to my first Book Expo 23 years ago. I knew exactly no one! This year was quite different. Besides seeing authors, publishing colleagues, booksellers and librarians, I interviewed Jennifer Weiner about her novel, MRS. EVERYTHING, which releases on June 11th (you can see a photo of us above). I caught up with Nelson DeMille and his son, Alex DeMille (pictured with me above), before their signing and talked to them about THE DESERTER, which they wrote together; it’s coming out on October 22nd. William Kent Krueger had a long signing line for THIS TENDER LAND, which releases on September 3rd. You can see him above chatting with Carolyn Reidy, the CEO of Simon & Schuster, before he started signing.
I met Christy Lefteri, the author of THE BEEKEEPER OF ALEPPO, which will be on sale August 27th. Her backstory to writing this novel was so compelling, and I will be sharing more about that in the weeks to come. You can see a photo of the two of us above.
There were six titles announced as Buzz books for the show, and you can see them above. They are HOW WE FIGHT FOR OUR LIVES: A Memoir by Saeed Jones (on sale October 8th), MY DARK VANESSA by Kate Elizabeth Russell (on sale January 28, 2020), THE SECRETS WE KEPT by Lara Prescott (on sale September 17th), SUCH A FUN AGE by Kiley Reid (on sale January 7, 2020), UNCANNY VALLEY: A Memoir by Anna Wiener (on sale January 14, 2020), and THE WAREHOUSE by Rob Hart (on sale August 20th).
And we ran our 8th Annual Book Group Speed Dating event this afternoon, where more than 260 booksellers, librarians, book club leaders and bloggers heard about 120+ titles. We will be sharing more from this event next week.
There was lots and lots of rain this week as I party-hopped. I think it will take the entire weekend for me to dry out!
Also this week, I learned that there is a big difference between typing and talking: word pronunciation. It came up this week with our latest promo video. Just how does one pronounce "Dorothea," for the author of QUEEN BEE. I know her as Dottie or Dot. So I tried to Facebook messenger her my question. I called the venue where she appeared on Tuesday to ask how they had introduced her, but I got their machine. I finally got an idea to watch a number of her YouTube videos and found one where she introduced herself! For the record, it is Dah-row-thee-a. Last week, it was "Pavone" for Chris Pavone: Pa-VOH-nee. I tell you, it’s easier to type than it is to talk!
QUEEN BEE is our lead review for this week, which marks the aforementioned Dorothea Benton Frank’s long-awaited return to her beloved Sullivan's Island. Other reviews include THE SENTENCE IS DEATH, the second installment in Anthony Horowitz’s mystery series starring Private Investigator Daniel Hawthorne; ASK AGAIN, YES by Mary Beth Keane, an upcoming Bookreporter.com Bets On selection about two neighboring families in a suburban town, the friendship between their children and a tragedy that reverberates over four decades (check out my Bets On commentary in next week’s newsletter), and KEEP YOU CLOSE, Karen Cleveland’s new thriller in which a woman must confront her sense of right and wrong when the one person she loves most is accused of an unimaginable crime.
We gave away ASK AGAIN, YES in this week’s Summer Reading contests, along with BEFORE WE WERE YOURS by Lisa Wingate and A BEND IN THE STARS by Rachel Barenbaum. Next week’s prizes will be BEFORE AND AGAIN by Barbara Delinsky, THE DREAM DAUGHTER by Diane Chamberlain, THE ISLAND OF SEA WOMEN by Lisa See, and THE SUMMER WIVES by Beatriz Williams. The first contest of the week will go live on Monday, June 3rd at noon ET.
QUEEN BEE is our current Word of Mouth prize book, in addition to THE FRIENDS WE KEEP by Jane Green, which we plan to review next week. Submit your comments about the books you’ve read, and you’ll be in the running to win both these highly anticipated novels.
The audio version of KEEP YOU CLOSE (read by Erin Bennett) is one of this month’s Sounding Off on Audio prizes; the other is John Sandford's NEON PREY: A Lucas Davenport Novel (read by Richard Ferrone). The contest is winding down, so be sure to let us know by this Monday at noon ET what audiobooks you’ve listened to for your chance to win both these audio titles.
MISTRESS OF THE RITZ by Melanie Benjamin and THE FAVORITE DAUGHTER by Kaira Rouda are my latest Bets On picks. Click on each of the titles for my commentary.
There’s still time to enter our Father’s Day contest, where five lucky winners will receive all five of our featured titles for themselves or their dads. Be sure to fill out this form by Wednesday, June 12th at noon ET.
We’re excited to tell you about a very special contest on ReadingGroupGuides.com for Jennifer Egan’s 2017 bestseller, MANHATTAN BEACH, which released in paperback last summer, was awarded the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction, and was 2018’s “One Book, One New York” pick. The novel takes us into a world populated by gangsters, sailors, divers, bankers and union men in a dazzling, propulsive exploration of a transformative moment in the lives and identities of women and men, of America and the world. We have 12 copies to give away to five groups, who then will have an opportunity to chat with Jennifer via phone, Skype or FaceTime. Ten additional winners will receive a single copy of the book. To enter, all you have to do is fill out this form by Thursday, June 27th at noon ET. Click here for the review and here for the discussion guide.
Our poll continues to ask if you give your books at home a “spring cleaning.” Click here to let us know what you do.

Sandy wrote, “Thank you so much for THE BOOK WOMAN OF TROUBLESOME CREEK. It is a real treasure of Kentucky in the ‘30s and how difficult it was just to stay alive. But people like the book women made life worth holding on to.” By the way, we see that this book is trending on our Word of Mouth feature.
Theresa wrote, “I just received the two books I won in the Word of Mouth contest. One was THE NIGHT BEFORE by Wendy Walker, and the other was Jeffery Deaver’s THE NEVER GAME. I haven’t read either of these authors before, not being a fan of suspense and thrillers. When I saw these two books offered in the Word of Mouth contest, I decided to enter because every once in a while it is good to get out of my comfort zone. Thank you for the push I needed to try something new and different!” More than welcome, Theresa. Glad these prizes encouraged you to try something new!
Mary wrote, “Just wondering as a woman who lost her brother in service to our country. Memorial Day: it is just as it states --- a memory to those who died while serving the USA. How can one be wished a 'Happy Memorial Day'?" Mary’s note gave me pause...and I will think twice about using the word “happy” in conjunction with Memorial Day. Also, I noted on various social media that friends failed to realize that on Memorial Day we honor fallen soldiers. It is not Veterans Day or Armed Forces Day.
Suzanne wrote, “This is just a very short note to tell you how much I enjoy your column and comments. Also, I wanted to wish you a lovely long Memorial Day weekend.” Thank you, and indeed it was.
The Virginia woman immortalized in the children’s book MISTY OF CHINCOTEAGUE dies at 81: We spent time at Chincoteague more than once as we drove back and forth to the Outer Banks. Maureen Beebe Hursh was the inspiration for Marguerite Henry’s 1947 book.
Trailer for The Goldfinch film: Watch it here; I think it looks terrific!
The Last Watch: The "Game of Thrones" documentary on the making of the final show is wonderful. Lots of details are here about how the sets were made, along with the costumes, hair and makeup. I highly recommend it!
The Last Resort: I enjoyed this documentary about the early days of Miami Beach. And you can see Mitch Kaplan, owner of the legendary Miami bookstore Books & Books, in it!
The peonies did bloom last weekend, and we had horrific rainstorms all week. So when I get home tonight, after staying in the city for Book Expo, I envision peony petals all over the ground. See the photo above of how they looked last weekend.
Last weekend, we got a LOT of gardening done, planting flowers and seeds, and laying lots and lots of mulch. We still have some to do in the back of the house before tackling the front!
Yesterday, I was walking on the show floor when Pamela, one of our readers, stopped me and told me she had something for me. It was a chocolate bar with cayenne pepper and cinnamon! She was not sure if it was what I was looking for in last week’s newsletter. I was so touched that she did this. I am happy to report that it’s terrific --- and I think spot-on to the flavor I was looking for. Endless thanks to her. By the way, in the supermarket last week, they were sold out of the Chili Chocolate that I mentioned. Do we have enough readers in my town that we sold out the chocolate? One never knows!
I am going to SLEEP this weekend as it has been one crazy busy week. I have a lot that I am looking forward to reading and will share more about that in the weeks to come.
Read on, and have a great week.

by Anthony Horowitz
THE SENTENCE IS DEATH by Anthony Horowitz (Mystery)
Audiobook available, read by Rory Kinnear
“You shouldn’t be here. It’s too late…” These, heard over the phone, were the last recorded words of successful celebrity-divorce lawyer Richard Pryce, found bludgeoned to death in his bachelor pad with a bottle of wine --- a 1982 Chateau Lafite worth £3,000, to be precise. Why this bottle? And why those words? And why was a three-digit number painted on the wall by the killer? And, most importantly, which of the man’s many, many enemies did the deed? Baffled, the police are forced to bring in Private Investigator Daniel Hawthorne and his sidekick, the author Anthony. But as Hawthorne takes on the case with characteristic relish, it becomes clear that he, too, has secrets to hide. Reviewed by Ray Palen.

THE FAVORITE DAUGHTER by Kaira Rouda (Psychological Thriller)
There are authors who write with a really distinctive voice. Kaira Rouda is one of them. I loved her last book, BEST DAY EVER, and opening THE FAVORITE DAUGHTER, I saw that once again she had nailed a super edgy tone in her writing. I am not sure what it says about me that I love her narcissist protagonists, but she gives them such strong personalities that I have to read more and not look away. THE FAVORITE DAUGHTER is edgy much the same as BEST DAY EVER. It is a complete page-turner of a train-wrecked life that consumed my day when I read it --- and I loved every minute of being totally drawn into it.
