At Home in My Office

I love my office in New York. It’s painted the color of my living room and dining room at home. I chose those colors for the office since I spend very little time in my living room or dining room --- I joke that I can count the days we use them each year, and they usually are smashed between November and January. I have this great dining room table IN my office so I can have meetings and lunches there. I even have turquoise dishes in my office for entertaining. It’s also great space for having people drop by --- one of my favorite things. This week Carol Cassella was in town from Seattle, and we spent some time on Tuesday chatting up her upcoming book, HEALER, which I am crazy about. Katie Arnoldi was in from California, and Wednesday we caught up on the excitement surrounding her book, POINT DUME, which landed on the Los Angeles Times bestseller list the first week it was out. During the writing of this book, Katie had shared with me stories about the Mexican drug cartels who are growing marijuana on federal and state lands. A good look at her research can be found here in the Times this week.
Monday night there was a wonderful party at Petrossian for William Ryan, whose upcoming book THE HOLY THIEF is getting fabulous buzz. Petrossian is ONE block up and ONE avenue over from my office, but I had never been there in the 14 years we have had this space. What a perfect place to celebrate a book set in Russia! I usually try to read an author's work before I meet him (or her), but this time I did not have a copy of THE HOLY THIEF in hand ahead of time. Thus, I felt like our readers as booksellers and media folks in the room were telling me about it --- literally effusing praise about it --- comparing it to GORKY PARK and CHILD 44. Each person who had read it had a new way to share the story with me --- all were astounded that this was the work of a debut writer. Someone had a camera that night and snapped my picture with the author. Need to track down that shot!
Wednesday night I dropped by Nelson DeMille’s talk and signing at a bookstore downtown. THE LION is in stores this week, and our reviewer Kate Ayers says, “Nelson DeMille really delivers with this eagerly awaited follow-up to THE LION’S GAME, which might be his best page-turner to date. John Corey thoroughly satisfies and is as irreverent as ever, shooting quick comebacks more often than he shoots his gun.” I agree. As always, during his talk, Nelson was amusing even when he was not trying to be. He has this genuinely funny way of telling a story that makes conversation with him always as entertaining as it is informative. Nelson and I have had talks about what it takes to be witty. He says that his character John Corey is witty because Nelson has time to think about the retort instead of just being in the moment in a conversation. He said he personally always has a lot of clever lines, but usually not in the exact moment that they should be delivered. He later thinks “THIS” would have been funny. I shot some pictures of him alone at the event, and then he told me to take the photo you see with him for the newsletter, and I was happy to oblige. For the record, I think Nelson looks much better than me in this picture!
Also, in stores this week is THE PASSAGE by Justin Cronin, which is one the most anticipated books of summer. (In publishing, anything after May counts as summer!) Our reviewer Melanie Smith had this to say about it: “There is an explosive quality to this book that destroys conventional thought, leaving your mind operating on a plane of simple survival. The impact of the reader's connection with the characters is incredible --- heroes and victims are all people audiences will feel they know as they move forward or live out their final moments. Experiences are expectedly grim, and there are one or two characters in whose minds you may not want to be trapped. Not to worry, though; they will be gone soon enough! I was completely captivated by this and had a crick in my neck for three days after reading it. But it was well worth it, and is a book I continue to be excited about.” We look forward to hearing what you have to say about it!

This week we’re featuring THE WHISPER by Carla Neggers in our Romantic Suspense spotlight. She’s a familiar name to many of our readers and an author we enjoy featuring. Carla blends action, adventure, suspense, conspiracy and romance all into a fast-paced read that unfolds in Ireland and Boston. This is shaping up to be a big year for Carla as in addition to THE WHISPER, she has COLD DAWN, the third book in her Black Falls series, scheduled to be released in November. Her novel THE MIST was released in paperback in April, and ON FIRE, one of her first books, was re-issued in February. Our Father’s Day blog series begins today and will run through June 21st. I have read through all the pieces, and I loved reading these tributes. We're starting the series with an excerpt from Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Chabon's memoir on fatherhood, MANHOOD FOR AMATEURS. Saturday we're featuring an original piece from Norman Ollestad, whose CRAZY FOR THE STORM was one of my Bets On picks for 2009. We have an excerpt from Bruce Feiler's touching THE COUNCIL OF DADS for Sunday, and on Monday Christina Olds shares a piece about her fighter-pilot father. In the coming week we'll have blogs from Robert Dugoni, Karin Slaughter, Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and more!
I loved reading about dads who read to their kids. If you are a dad who has a story about reading to your child or if you remember your dad reading to you, I want to hear those stories, so drop me a note at Carol@bookreporter.com. My husband read to the boys when they were little a lot more than me; I was the one who brought them the reading material. They had a BOOK OF GOODNIGHT STORIES that was a real favorite. I see that dog-eared book around, and it still makes me smile.

And last, but surely not least, just in time for the start of the U.S. Open we have our annual Summer Golf Books roundup. Our reviewer Stuart Shiffman takes a look at six books that are sure to be a hit with fans of the game. I am sure that my husband who played golf today and will play again tomorrow and Sunday will be marking which of these titles he wants to read. Between his playing golf and watching golf --- where I swear that whispering from the commentators puts me to sleep, and the ONLY thing worse than watching it on TV is listening to it on radio! --- I feel like we are on the Tour. Of course he jokes that I can spend four hours in a yarn shop, which is completely true.
Besides THE HOLY THIEF, over the next few weeks I want to read something by Sophie Hannah and something by Tana French. Sophie will be in DC for the library conference, and her work is something I have been meaning to get to.
This weekend I am attending my grammar school reunion. I know…WHO has a grammar school reunion? Confession: I remember VERY few of the people I went to grammar school with. Many of these are names that I vaguely remember, but it sounds like it could be a fun catchup, and since I am not traveling I am going. I looked at a picture of myself in the 7th and 8th grade class pictures that are online somewhere and realized those were NOT my best years. Greg is off geocaching in upstate Connecticut this weekend, camping in his car. I know…youth! Cory is making a video for Spanish class with a group of friends. I just had a cameo role. I asked them for my motivation, which amused them. Now I am off to make them homemade pizza. I am glad they did not want paella!
