Harry Harry Harry. I am wondering if there is anyone who does not know that the latest Harry Potter book comes out tonight at midnight! The boys and I are off to celebrate this very special release at a party at Borders' Columbus Circle location just a few blocks from our office that starts tonight at 9. Yes, we are very caught up in Harry Potter fever! I blog about Harry and my thoughts about him here. The boys each have their Light Wedges ready to go so they can read on the way home; in fact, Cory has a special Harry Potter edition. Happy reading.
Harry is not the only news at Bookreporter.com this week. We are announcing two new Suspense/Thriller authors whose work we think you want to note. The first is M.J. Rose, whose August 28th release, THE REINCARNATIONIST, already has earned two starred reviews from industry trade publications. I read this book back in April when we were on vacation. It's a much "bigger book" for Rose than those that she previously has penned with lots of interweaving plots and turns. And trust that you will be thinking about reincarnation after you close it. Interested in reading one of the 20 advance reading copies that we have available? Then fill out the form here by Friday, August 3rd.
Our second Suspense/Thriller author being announced this week is Raymond Khoury. Many of you know his work from our Debut Suspense/Thriller feature about his New York Times bestselling novel, THE LAST TEMPLAR. His new book, THE SANCTUARY, will be in stores on August 21st. In this powerful thriller, a geneticist and a CIA agent on a deadly quest to find the most dangerous book in the world discover a secret that has destroyed everyone in its path for centuries. Interested in reading one of the 10 advance reading copies that we have available? Then fill out the form here by Friday, July 27th.
More on last weekend's ThrillerFest in a moment, but I wanted to give a round of applause to Joseph Finder, who won the Thriller of the Year Award for Fiction for KILLER INSTINCT. (You can see the complete list of award winners here.) As you know, we are real fans of Finder's, and in fact, we have an offer to read his next book POWER PLAY still running for Suspense/Thriller. See the form here to sign up by next Friday, July 27th to be entered to win.
Our latest One to Watch Author is Elizabeth Joy Arnold, author of PIECES OF MY SISTER'S LIFE, which is the story of twins who were inseparable until their 17th birthday when their lives on Block Island were shattered. Thirteen years later, one sister must put their differences aside to rally behind her twin when she really needs her. I started this one yesterday and see why the publisher is telling readers that those who like Jodi Picoult's MY SISTER'S KEEPER and Judy Blume's SUMMER SISTERS will enjoy this one. Interested in reading one of the 10 advance reading copies that we have available? Then fill out the form here by Friday, July 27th.
We continue to celebrate beach books with SECOND CHANCE by Jane Green, our 10th featured title. Our reviewer, Norah Piehl, says that "fabulous lifestyles, breezy dialogue and happy (if somewhat unexpected) endings...ensure that SECOND CHANCE deserves a spot on plenty of beach blankets this summer." I had great fun pulling together this beach bag...ahem, please note how everything including the beach ball pillow matches the cover. Yes, I did work on that.
This week we are sharing ARC comments from readers about Eileen Goudge's WOMAN IN RED, as well as answers to reader questions from Brett Battles (THE CLEANER), Andrea Portes (HICK) and Adriana Bourgoin (NINE MONTHS IN AUGUST).
Last weekend's ThrillerFest in New York was a terrific event. Our fast-reading and prolific reviewer, Joe Hartlaub, was in town for the event, and we had a great time chatting and comparing notes. Joe is loved by so many thriller writers and is known as a true expert on this genre. We do not get to see each other enough, so getting together at this event was perfect. Joe is pictured with me above. There were soooo many highlights at this event for me! Hearing Clive Cussler interviewed by David Hewson was a definite winner, as was Vince Flynn's spotlight presentation where he had the audience laughing with his stories about Presidents Bush and Clinton both enjoying his books. I guess that makes him a non-partisan author. Lisa Gardner was impressive both at the spotlight event where Tess Gerritsen did a wonderful interview with her and on a panel where she summed up the thriller genre so succinctly that John Lescroart told the audience that after hearing that, they could leave. Gayle Lynds chatted with Heather Graham in another special spotlight session where Graham clearly impressed the audience with her writing schedule to complete four books a year.
Seeing Lee Child in the room at so many panels listening to other authors and interacting with fans and authors in the halls was impressive. He gives back so much to the genre and other authors. Meeting authors like Nick Santora (SLIP AND FALL), Brett Battles (THE CLEANER) and Heather Terrell (THE CHRYSALIS) for the first time, among many others I know I am forgetting, was terrific. It always means more when I put a face with a name beyond the author photo. Nice to spend time like this, though I confess I spent Sunday floating in the pool and sleeping after all the excitement.
My older son was with me at the event, and there will be some great memories of Tess Gerritsen introducing him to Jeffery Deaver and others at the pre-award cocktail party. He loved every moment of the weekend.
Monday evening Greg and I caught Lisa See's reading at the Barnes & Noble store on the Upper West Side. A crowd of more than 125 readers listened with rapt attention as Lisa discussed her latest work, PEONY IN LOVE.
As for this weekend, if you are in a store tonight waiting to buy HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS, may I offer a suggestion? This midnight release affords an opportunity for booklovers to spend a lot of time in a store waiting. Pick up a second book, or a third while you are there. To me, THAT is what will make this evening a really special success! For the record, at our house four books will be bought so we all can enjoy it together. The Price Tag: Less than one orchestra ticket to most Broadway shows.
Happy reading. Have a great week. We will be "Harrybernating" reading the whole weekend!

Bookreporter.com Talks to Jonathan Tropper, Author of HOW TO TALK TO A WIDOWER

Jonathan Tropper is the author of PLAN B, THE BOOK OF JOE, EVERYTHING CHANGES and the newly published HOW TO TALK TO A WIDOWER. In this interview with Bookreporter.com's Alexis Burling, Tropper shares the rather dark thoughts that inspired this novel and discusses its mix of humor and heavy subject matter. He also elaborates on the different facets of grief and loss his characters experience and gives his two cents on the phrase "Time heals all wounds."

More about KEEPING THE WORLD AWAY:
From internationally bestselling author Margaret Forster comes an engrossing novel that follows the imagined life of an evocative, actual early-twentieth-century painting as it changes hands and, though the years, affects the lives of a succession of women.
Gwen, a bold and spirited young English artist, defies convention and sets out to study in Paris, where she has a tumultuous affair with the inspiring, controlling sculptor Rodin. But as the relationship cools, Gwen feels lonely and adrift as she awaits the ever more infrequent visits from her lover. Attempting to restore her artistic vision and recapture her true self, Gwen pours out her soul onto a canvas, creating a small, intimate painting of a quiet corner of her attic room.
Lost, found, stolen, sold and fought over, the painting enchants all who possess it. First it falls into the hands of Charlotte, a dreamy intellectual with artistic leanings --- though little talent. In turn the work finds its way to the lovely, bright Stella; the destitute but willful Lucasta; self-sufficient Ailsa; and finally young, curious Gillian --- all of whom share an unspoken desire to “keep the world away” and long for a tranquil golden place such as the one depicted in the painting.

Featured One to Watch Author: Nancy Horan, Author of LOVING FRANK
|
Nancy Horan's debut novel, LOVING FRANK, is a fictionalized account of Frank Lloyd Wright's relationship with Mamah Borthwick Cheney, who had commissioned the renowned architect to design a new home for her. During the construction of the house, a powerful attraction developed between Mamah and Frank; the two became lovers, even though they were each married with children.

More about LOVING FRANK:
I have been standing on the side of life, watching it float by. I want to swim in the river. I want to feel the current.
So writes Mamah Borthwick Cheney in her diary as she struggles to justify her clandestine love affair with Frank Lloyd Wright. Four years earlier, in 1903, Mamah and her husband, Edwin, had commissioned the renowned architect to design a new home for them. During the construction of the house, a powerful attraction developed between Mamah and Frank, and in time the lovers, each married with children, embarked on a course that would shock Chicago society and forever change their lives.
In this ambitious debut novel, fact and fiction blend together brilliantly. While scholars have largely relegated Mamah to a footnote in the life of America’s greatest architect, author Nancy Horan gives full weight to their dramatic love story and illuminates Cheney’s profound influence on Wright.
Drawing on years of research, Horan weaves little-known facts into a compelling narrative, vividly portraying the conflicts and struggles of a woman forced to choose between the roles of mother, wife, lover, and intellectual. Horan’s Mamah is a woman seeking to find her own place, her own creative calling in the world. Mamah’s is an unforgettable journey marked by choices that reshape her notions of love and responsibility, leading inexorably to this novel’s stunning conclusion.
Elegantly written and remarkably rich in detail, LOVING FRANK is a fitting tribute to a courageous woman, a national icon and their timeless love story.

But his newfound state of calm is soon interrupted when Henry Meloux, the Ojibwe medicine man and Cork's spiritual adviser, makes a request: Will Cork find the son that Henry fathered long ago?
With little to go on, Cork uses his investigative skills to locate Henry Wellington, a wealthy and reclusive industrialist living in Thunder Bay, Ontario. When a murder attempt is made on old Meloux's life, all clues point north across the border. But why would Wellington want his father dead? This question takes Cork on a journey through time as he unravels the story of Meloux's 1920s adventure in the ore-rich wilderness of Canada, where his love for a beautiful woman, far outside his culture, led him into a trap of treachery, greed and murder.
The past and present collide along the rocky shores of Thunder Bay, where a father's unconditional love is tested by a son's deeply felt resentment, and where jealousy and revenge remain the code among men. As Cork hastens to uncover the truth and save his friend, he soon discovers that his own life is in danger and is reminded that the promises we keep --- even for the best of friends --- can sometimes place us in the hands of our worst enemies.
