Reading by the Sea

Greetings from the Outer Banks where the weather has been great! I have gotten a ton of reading done poolside this week, which has been heavenly. The house we are renting is on a golf course, and I have been spying the balls for the golfers who are not hitting it straight. I tell people that for $1 I will point them to where their ball has landed. This offer is getting some good laughs. For a complete travelogue of our trip thus far, you can read my blog here. It includes updates on my reading, as well as assorted other tales from the trip, including the $1 DVD rentals that have the boys and me jazzed.

Quick Important Business Note: We are moving our servers from one location to another next Wednesday as the building that our serving company uses has been sold. We have been assured that this will go smoothly, which usually means I will lose two nights, not three, worrying about it. But for you, please note that our websites will not be accessible for at least a few hours on Wednesday morning as the transition is made. Apologies in advance for this necessary inconvenience.

On our lineup this week we have a full roster, which I am ever grateful to our intrepid staff for being on top of. Included are reader comments about Lisa Jackson's ABSOLUTE FEAR and Tim Maleeny's STEALING THE DRAGON. Also KEY LIME PIE MURDER author Joanne Fluke answers questions from readers.

Our newest featured One to Watch author is the exceptionally talented Monica Pradhan. Her debut title is THE HINDI-BINDI CLUB --- an elegant tapestry of East and West, peppered with food and ceremony, wisdom and sensuality --- which hits stores on May 1st. It is told through the eyes of three young women whose mothers are from India who the girls have christened with the moniker, The Hindi-Bindi Club. I enjoy stories that get me into another culture, and thus I am enjoying this one.

We have 10 advance copies of the book to give to readers who would like to preview and comment on the title. Interested? Send your name and mailing address to
OnetoWatch@bookreporter.com by Friday, April 13th.

We also have an update to ReadingGroupGuides.com for you, which includes 24 new guides and two very special offers for our registered book clubs. Check it out.

Happy Easter to all of our Christian readers. Due to the way the holiday is breaking this year, we are going to be driving back to NJ on Easter. Last year when this same thing happened we had Easter dinner at the Lone Star Steakhouse, which was just about the only place open. This was one of those nothing goes right dinners where they first brought me an underdone steak, then a repeat with the outside crispy and inside still red and then a third version that had the texture of shoe leather. Each time, they brought me another sweet potato telling me "corporate rules state that we always must bring a fresh starch when we plate a meal." This is one of those stories that my kids will be telling their grandchildren. Have a great week.

Bookreporter.com Talks to Sandra Dallas, Author of TALLGRASS

Author and journalist Sandra Dallas has written 10 nonfiction books and seven novels, including her latest work of fiction, TALLGRASS. In this interview with Bookreporter.com's Alexis Burling, Dallas describes the past and current events that inspired this story, which revolves around Japanese internment camps during World War II, and discusses the amount of research she conducted in preparation for the book. She also reveals some of her characters' real-life counterparts, explains how the elements of the plot have evolved during the writing process and shares what she hopes readers will take away from the novel.

TALLGRASS by Sandra Dallas (Historical Fiction)
Already being compared to David Guterson's SNOW FALLING ON CEDARS, Sandra Dallas's seventh novel is a venerable blend of historical fact and engrossing fiction, set in a rural Colorado town during World War II. A book that surely will resonate with contemporary readers because of its global focus yet small town feel, TALLGRASS both teaches and entertains in equal measures. Reviewed by Alexis Burling.

Bookreporter.com Talks to Masha Hamilton, Author of THE CAMEL BOOKMOBILE

Masha Hamilton has worked for the Los Angeles Times, The Associated Press and NBC-Mutual Radio, and is the author of THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US and STAIRCASE OF A THOUSAND STEPS. In this interview with Bookreporter.com's Alexis Burling, Hamilton discusses the real project that inspired her latest novel, THE CAMEL BOOKMOBILE, and elaborates on some of the themes covered in the book regarding the clash of disparate cultures and the ways in which Americans approach issues overseas. She also explains why she waited until after the manuscript was in its final editing stages to visit the country where the book is set, compares and contrasts journalism with novel-writing, and shares what she hopes readers will take away from reading her story.

THE CAMEL BOOKMOBILE by Masha Hamilton (Fiction)
Veteran reporter and two-time novelist Masha Hamilton's latest book takes readers into the remotest areas of the African continent to explore what happens when modern Western traditions are introduced into the very fabric of a third world, traditionally nomadic society. Reviewed by Alexis Burling.

More about OBSESSION:
Katharine Lawrence has no idea what hit her. The attack came out of nowhere. Only hours earlier she had been enjoying a girls-only weekend with an old college friend. Now she finds herself lying bound and gagged on her kitchen floor, staring with terrified eyes at her friend Lisa while two masked gunmen search her house for –-- what? She doesn’t know. She only knows that, unless they can escape, whatever it is could end up getting both her and Lisa killed.

But Katharine’s nightmare is only just beginning. When she awakens in a Washington hospital, her nose crushed, her body battered, her brain tells her things aren’t right –-- and it’s not the attack that’s disorienting her. She doesn’t recognize herself when she looks in the mirror: her slim body, her manicured hands, her blond bob. And the smiling, handsome doctor at her bedside –-- Dr. Dan Howard –-- is familiar, but in a totally unfamiliar way. Perhaps the trauma of the attempt on her life has given her some kind of weird amnesia. She’s twenty-nine, the special assistant to the head of the CIA, and she’s lucky to be alive. She also knows she can trust no one.

More about GENGHIS:
He was born Temujin, the son of a khan, raised in a clan of hunters migrating across the rugged steppe. Temujin’s young life was shaped by a series of brutal acts: the betrayal of his father by a neighboring tribe and the abandonment of his entire family cruelly left to die on the harsh plain. But Temujin endured—and from that moment on, he was driven by a singular fury: to survive in the face of death, to kill before being killed, and to conquer enemies who could come without warning from beyond the horizon.

Through a series of courageous raids against the Tartars, Temujin’s legend grew. And so did the challenges he faced --- from the machinations of a Chinese ambassador to the brutal abduction of his young wife, Borte. Blessed with ferocious courage, it was the young warrior’s ability to learn, to imagine, and to judge the hearts of others that propelled him to greater and greater power. Until Temujin was chasing a vision: to unite many tribes into one, to make the earth tremble under the hoofbeats of a thousand warhorses, to subject unknown nations and even empires to his will.

More about THE WILDE WOMEN:
The Wilde sisters dove headfirst into this world on fire with life and expectation. With hair black as midnight and eyes blazing blue, they grow into truly irresistible women. But as well as being blessed with beauty and determination, the Wilde sisters are cursed with equal tastes for mischief and bad men. And both of these appetites always lead to trouble. Love either lifts a woman up or drags her down. When a Wilde woman dies, they don't have to dig a hole.

On Black Friday in Five Points, Tennessee, Pearl Wilde finds her sister, Kat, in the barn wearing both her favorite shoes and her fiancé. As quick to fury as she is to passion, Pearl leaves town immediately. She returns five years later a sophisticated femme fatale, with her claws sharpened like stainless steel and a demeanor so cool that the townspeople can no longer tell if she even has sweat glands. Slowly and deliberately, Pearl begins her revenge on Kat by captivating all the men of Five Points, but all the while never forgetting the one man who had the power to break her heart.

In THE WILDE WOMEN, Paula Wall once again bewitches the reader with humor, sass, smarts, and sensuality, creating a hilarious and beguiling world where sometimes the best revenge is forgiveness.
