Yesterday marked the 50th anniversary of the publication of THE CAT IN THE HAT. Though I grew up on Seuss, I had not known that his books were first published around the time I was born. I assumed they had been around forever, but then what child knows from front list and backlist? I love fun bookish facts and the one that this book has just 236 different words in it is great trivia to me. Today there is a national read-aloud of THE CAT IN THE HAT taking place at 2:36 PM EST. Hats off to whoever dreamed that event up. My copy of the book is sitting here begging to be read again, which I will do at 2:36 today.

The Seuss and Cat fans among you may want to check out THE ANNOTATED CAT: Under the Hats of Seuss and His Cats. Sally Tibbetts, our Kidsreads.com reviewer, has this to say about it: "Philip Nel's wonderful book on Seuss is filled with these kinds of great stories, along with copies of letters, interviews, sketches, notes and hundreds of personal trivia. Endnotes and references provide greater details and expand even more on the many bits and pieces of fascinating information."

Visit www.catinthehat.com to send the Cat a birthday e-card. For each e-card received, Random House will donate a book to First Reads to support literacy.

And I could not resist asking you if you have read THE CAT IN THE HAT in this week's poll question. For many of us, I am sure this is one of the first books that we remember. And my favorite line is one I read in the Shelf-Awareness.com industry newsletter today that the CAT is now eligible for AARP. Very funny.

Last weekend I had a terrific time at the South Carolina Book Festival. The reader crowds were great and there was a fabulous group of authors that truly had fun hanging out with each other. Just lovely. You can read more about it and my other bookish adventures this week, including the Books for a Better Life award ceremony, in my latest blog installment, which will be up over the weekend.

My next trip will be to Charlottesville from March 22nd to 25th for the Virginia Festival of the Book. This is my 6th trip to this Festival, which gets more and more authors who I love there each year. Friday night there is a mystery author panel with Lee Child, George PelecanosTess Gerritsen and Laura Lippman that I really am looking forward to. Also, Charles J. Shields, the author of MOCKINGBIRD, will be on another panel that I want to catch. Full details can be found here.

This week we turn our spotlight to two Romantic Suspense authors who we will be featuring over the next few months. The first, Karen Robards, is the author of thirty-three books and a regular on the New York Times, USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. I got to know Karen as we built her website, KarenRobards.com, a couple of years ago and since then have looked forward to her books. Her newest is OBSESSION --- a taut and sexy psychological thriller that hits stores on April 10th. We have 20 copies of OBSESSION to give to readers who would like to preview and comment on the book. Interested? Send your name and mailing address to RomanticSuspense@bookreporter.com by March 16th.

Our second featured Romantic Suspense author is Beverly Barton, the New York Times bestselling author of over thirty contemporary romance novels and two-time National Reader’s Choice Award winner. Her newest red-hot thriller, THE DYING GAME, hits stores March 27th and promises to be a steamy and seductive thriller. We have 50! advance reading copies of THE DYING GAME to give to readers who would like to preview and comment on the book. Interested? Send your name and mailing address to RomanticSuspense2@bookreporter.com by March 16th.

Speaking of our Author Spotlights, we have Robert Dugoni's answers to his reader questions --- tackling everything from his acknowlegements to the underlying themes in his book, DAMAGE CONTROL.

Also on our lineup this week is THE ASSASSIN by Andrew Britton, the second book from this talented young author (he's still in his 20s). I loved Britton's debut novel, THE AMERICAN, and I look forward to reading this one. You can read more about him at his website, AndrewBrittonBooks.com. And our own Jen Krieger brings you her Books Into Movies feature for March.

What am I reading this week? THE BLOOD OF FLOWERS by Anita Amirrezvani, which will be in stores on June 5th. It's set in 17th century Iran and tells the story of a woman whose talent for designing rugs transforms her life. Aside here. We have a rug in our family room that was commissioned from a company in Israel during the first Iraq War. While it was being made, there were scud missiles being aimed at Israel. Thus we nicknamed this "The Scud Rug." I have a whole new appreciation for rug design reading this book. Amirrezvani's writing is rich and enthralling.

Tomorrow, in the spirit of further exploring colleges, the boys and I are hitting the basketball game at Fordham. While the tours and info sessions give great overviews, we know the real skinny on the school comes from alternative methods of research. Thus we will be yelling, "Go Rams."

Have a great week...oh March blasted in here like a lion so there goes my hopes for a lamb/lamb kinda March this year. My sons always get a kick out of my reference to March like this, so that line's for them.

Bookreporter.com Talks to Karen Harter, Author of AUTUMN BLUE

In this interview with Bookreporter.com's Alexis Burling, Karen Harter --- author of WHERE MERCY FLOWS --- describes the events in her life that inspired her to write her second novel, AUTUMN BLUE, and explains how the story grew and evolved from its initial conception. She also discusses the significance of religion in the lives of her characters and addresses issues that are prevalent today regarding children with special needs.

AUTUMN BLUE by Karen Harter (Fiction)
Karen Harter mixes equal parts faith, family and forgiveness in her second novel involving a group of wayward small-towners who are thrown together under unfortunate circumstances. Each fighting to figure out what's best --- and sometimes rejecting what comes naturally --- these desperate seekers are what drive the narrative forward to its conclusion. New Featured Romantic Suspense Author: Karen Robards, Author of OBSESSION

Karen Robards is the author of thirty-three books and a regular on the New York Times, USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists.

More about OBSESSION:
Katharine Lawrence has no idea what hit her. The attack came out of nowhere. Only hours earlier she had been enjoying a girls-only weekend with an old college friend. Now she finds herself lying bound and gagged on her kitchen floor, staring with terrified eyes at her friend Lisa while two masked gunmen search her house for –-- what? She doesn’t know. She only knows that, unless they can escape, whatever it is could end up getting both her and Lisa killed.

But Katharine’s nightmare is only just beginning. When she awakens in a Washington hospital, her nose crushed, her body battered, her brain tells her things aren’t right –-- and it’s not the attack that’s disorienting her. She doesn’t recognize herself when she looks in the mirror: her slim body, her manicured hands, her blond bob. And the smiling, handsome doctor at her bedside –-- Dr. Dan Howard –-- is familiar, but in a totally unfamiliar way. Perhaps the trauma of the attempt on her life has given her some kind of weird amnesia. She’s twenty-nine, the special assistant to the head of the CIA, and she’s lucky to be alive. She also knows she can trust no one.

A New York Times best-seller, it won the prestigious Bram Stoker Award and earned numerous critical raves. SCAVENGER, Morrell's latest novel, takes us in a harrowing new direction: a desperate high-tech scavenger hunt for a 100-year-old time capsule. Frank Balenger, the resolute but damaged hero of CREEPERS, now finds himself trapped in a nightmarish game of fear and death. To save himself and the woman he loves, he must play by the rules of a god-like Game Master with an obsession for unearthing the past. But sometimes the past is buried for a reason.

SCAVENGER is a brilliant, frightening hunter-hunted tale that layers modern technology over the dusty artifacts of earlier times. The result is a surreal palimpsest, one that contains the secret of survival for Balenger and a handful of unwilling players who race against the game's clock to solve the puzzle of the time capsule, only to discover that time is the true scavenger. Morrell's trademark action sequences are embedded with fascinating historical clues that make SCAVENGER a thrill-a-minute page-turner as well as a mesmerizing literary experience.

More about THE MERCY SELLER:
In the fifteenth century, with religious intolerance spreading like wildfire across Europe, English-born Anna Bookman and her grandfather, Finn, earn a living in Prague by illuminating precious books, including forbidden translations of the Bible. Finn subscribes to the heresy that people ought to be able to read the Word of God for themselves, without having to pay a priest for the privilege, but holding that belief is becoming more and more hazardous. When the authorities start burning books and slaughtering heretics --- including the man Anna was to marry --- Finn urges her to seek sanctuary in England, but her passage abroad will be anything but easy.

In London, Friar Gabriel dutifully obeys church doctrine by granting pardons . . . for a small fee. But then he is sent undercover on a spying mission to France, where Anna has set up a temporary stall as a bookseller. Anna has no way of knowing that the wealthy young merchant frequenting her stall is actually a priest --- just as Gabriel does not know he has met the woman who will cause him to doubt his vows.

As Anna continues her journey to England, where the movement to stamp out heresy is growing ever fiercer, Brenda Rickman Vantrease brings us a richly imagined and immensely rewarding novel of love, faith, and dangerous secrets.
