Nineteen Inches of Books

For the record, after last week when I wrote the newsletter standing up in the middle of the construction zone at the office, this week I AM sitting down. The project is about 95% completed. My office is getting a glass wall, which will go in last. I have been WALKING through the window area instead of the door for weeks now, thus the staff is taking bets on how many times I am going to gallop into the glass. I am not betting against them. I figure I will need to keep the Windex handy to destroy all telltale fingermarks!

Our staff came back to the office yesterday, and we had a great time catching back up after weeks of IMs, emails and phone calls. They never broke stride while we were out, and they were back, unpacked, plugged in and working within a half an hour of getting to the office yesterday. I thank them endlessly for their tenacity and fortitude these past weeks. I really appreciated it, and they tell me they LOVE the new office space. We added six new bookcases to the new space while they were out, and by the time they walked in yesterday we had five of them completely filled with books that arrived while they were gone!

I went out to lunch with Carolyn Schwartz, a publishing friend yesterday, and I was positively giddy to leave the office after 3 1/2 weeks. I was living on takeout pizza on the days I did remember to eat lunch. Also, Chessman cookies were often breakfast and lunch, thus I may not be able to look at those for a while. A waiter, a tablecloth, a menu, cloth napkins and silverware that was not plastic. Ah, the little things.

Since it's mid-August (and just how did that happen when I was not looking?) and summer is drawing to a close, we are running a Special Beach Bag Contest to celebrate summer. We've pulled together SIXTEEN terrific books that were published this summer, paired them with a beach bag and a towel, and they are this week's prize. Since my life this week was all about measuring, I will have you know you will need 19 inches of space on your shelf if you are one of our FIVE lucky winners. And this prize is valued at $400! We had a lot of fun pulling this special contest together. Entry information is below. Good luck to all of you!

One of the most talked about books of 2006, THE BOOK THIEF by Markus Zusak, is coming out in paperback on September 11th. Given how this book moved so many readers, we are excited to share Zusak and his work with you as our latest One to Watch author this week. THE BOOK THIEF is a New York Times bestseller, which has won countless awards. This unforgettable story, set during World War II in Germany, is about a girl who steals to survive and discovers the power of books with the help of her accordion-playing foster father. Zusak's writing is both moving and provocative. Earlier this summer I toured the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, and there were many moments during the exhibit that I found myself thinking about this book and how it wonderfully captured this horrific period. I have had the pleasure of hearing Zusak speak on two occasions, and his passion for this work and his humility in light of how very powerful it is makes him an author who I am so pleased to get before you. We have 10 copies to give away to readers who would like to read and comment. Fill out the form here for details on how to participate by Friday, August 24th.

I love when I discover a debut author and love his or her story, and that is exactly what happened with Emily Benedek's RED SEA. Emily is a journalist and an author who spent a year following an FBI agent working counterterrorism and met with a high-level Israeli expert on the same subject who inspired this novel. Her research lends an authoritative and inside look at international terrorism. At the start of the book, four commercial airliners are blown from the sky over international airspace, which is auspicious enough. Quickly the story unfolds that this attack is something much more. We live about 30 minutes from Newark Airport, and during the day as the flight patterns of the flights change, we often have planes flying in the skies above our house. I was sitting in the hammock reading RED SEA during one of these periods, and the roar of the engines definitely had me ripping through the pages more quickly. It's a fascinating novel, which reads authentically. We have 10 to share with readers who would like to comment on it by filling out the form here by Friday, August 24th.

This week we have comments from readers about LOVING FRANK by Nancy Horan and KEEPING THE WORLD AWAY by Margaret Forster. May their comments inspire you to explore these books.

My hammock and pool chair are calling. I have NO weekend plans. I have NO blueprints to look through. Thus it's all about reading, knitting, grilling and watching one of the Netflix rentals sitting next to the television. We are going to the Outer Banks next Friday, so I am plotting how we can leave town with THREE movie rentals in hand that I really want to watch. May this be my most difficult decision of this weekend! Happy reading to all of you. Find some place to escape with a book. If you are stuck on what to read...remember we have SIXTEEN suggestions in this week's Beach Bag Special Contest.

More about THE BOOK THIEF:
It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery....

Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist --- books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.

This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul.

POWER PLAY:
It was the perfect retreat for a troubled company. No cell phones. No BlackBerrys. No cars. Just a luxurious, remote lodge surrounded by thousands of miles of wilderness.

All the top officers of the Hammond Aerospace Corporation are there. And one last-minute substitute --- a junior executive named Jake Landry. He’s a steady, modest and taciturn guy with a gift for keeping his head down and a turbulent past he’s trying to put behind him.

Jake’s uncomfortable with all the power players he's surrounded by, with all their swaggering and posturing. The only person there he knows is the female CEO’s assistant --- his ex-girlfriend, Ali.

When a band of backwoods hunters crash the opening-night dinner, the executives suddenly find themselves held hostage by armed men who will do anything, to anyone, to get their hands on the largest ransom in history. Now, terrified and desperate and cut off from the rest of the world, the captives are at the mercy of hard men with guns who may not be what they seem.

The corporate big shots hadn’t wanted Jake there. But now he’s the only one who can save them.

An army unit on a routine mission makes a horrifying discovery: a state-of-the-art, concealed lab where dozens --- men, women, children --- have died, the subjects of gruesome experiments. The mysterious scientist they were after, a man believed to be working on a bioweapon and known only as the hakeem --- the doctor --- escapes, taking with him the startling truth about his work. A puzzling clue is left behind: a circular symbol of a snake feeding on its own tail.

The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers. Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures.

A successful caterer, Claire Waverley prepares dishes made with her mystical plants --- from the nasturtiums that aid in keeping secrets and the pansies that make children thoughtful, to the snapdragons intended to discourage the attentions of her amorous neighbor. Meanwhile, her elderly cousin, Evanelle, is known for distributing unexpected gifts whose uses become uncannily clear. They are the last of the Waverleys --- except for Claire’s rebellious sister, Sydney, who fled Bascom the moment she could, abandoning Claire, as their own mother had years before.

When Sydney suddenly returns home with a young daughter of her own, Claire’s quiet life is turned upside down --- along with the protective boundary she has so carefully constructed around her heart. Together again in the house they grew up in, Sydney takes stock of all she left behind, as Claire struggles to heal the wounds of the past. And soon the sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy --- if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom --- or with each other.

Enchanting and heartfelt, this captivating novel is sure to cast a spell with a style all its own….

More about NEVER GO BACK:
Harry Barnett is leading a contented life in Vancouver with his wife and daughter when he is brought back to England by the death of his mother. He intends to spend just a few days sorting out her affairs when a chance meeting he will regret for the rest of his life makes him change his plans. Two old acquaintances from his National Service days track Harry down to his mother’s house --- the last address they had for him. A lavish reunion has been organized to mark the fiftieth anniversary of their RAF days. Harry decides to go.

During the war, Harry and his fellow RAF conscripts spent three months in a Scottish castle where they acted as guinea pigs in a psychological experiment. The reunion is to take place in the same castle. It will be a chance to see friends, settle old scores and lay a few ghosts to rest.

The party begins on the train up to Aberdeen, until the apparent suicide of one of their number shatters the holiday atmosphere. Their arrival in Scotland seems under a cloud, and when another comrade dies soon after their arrival, Harry is gripped by a sense of foreboding. As well, the recollections of the old comrades of their time in the castle are frighteningly different, and unexplained events from 1955 still haunt them. As Harry tries to solve the mystery of what really happened fifty years ago, he uncovers an extraordinary secret that convinces him he will never leave the castle alive.

THE STREET OF A THOUSAND BLOSSOMS:
It is Tokyo in 1939. On the Street of a Thousand Blossoms, two orphaned brothers are growing up with their loving grandparents, who inspire them to dream of a future firmly rooted in tradition. The older boy, Hiroshi, shows unusual skill at the national obsession of sumo wrestling, while Kenji is fascinated by the art of creating hand-carved masks for actors in the Noh theater.

Across town, a renowned sumo master, Sho Tanaka, lives with his wife and their two young daughters: the delicate, daydreaming Aki and her independent sister, Haru. Life seems full of promise as Kenji begins an informal apprenticeship with the most famous mask-maker in Japan and Hiroshi receives a coveted invitation to train with Tanaka. But then Pearl Harbor changes everything. As the ripples of war spread to both families’ quiet neighborhoods, all of the generations must put their dreams on hold --- and then find their way in a new Japan.

In an exquisitely moving story that spans almost thirty years, Gail Tsukiyama draws us irresistibly into the world of the brothers and the women who love them. It is a world of tradition and change, of heartbreaking loss and surprising hope, and of the impact of events beyond their control on ordinary, decent men and women.
