In this newsletter, you will find books releasing the weeks of August 17th and August 24th that we think will be of interest to Bookreporter.com readers, along with Bonus News, where we call out a contest, feature or review that we want to let you know about so you have it on your radar.
This week, we are calling attention to our Fall Reading Contests and Feature, a series of 24-hour giveaways that are taking place on select days through mid-October. Enter for your chance to win titles that we think will be great fall reading picks.
Our first Fall Reading contest is now up. The prize book is GOD'S COUNTRY by William Kent Krueger, our current New Release Spotlight title and an upcoming Bookreporter.com Bets On selection. This 22nd installment in the wildly popular Cork O'Connor series is an action-packed thrill ride that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.
In his Bookreporter review, Ray Palen says that the book “combines the best elements of crime noir with a complex character beloved by loyal readers.” He adds that GOD'S COUNTRY is “an atmospheric read, and you cannot help but be drawn into Cork’s inner monologue and very outward fears and visions.”
The deadline for your entries is TOMORROW, Wednesday, August 19th at noon ET.
This week's second Fall Reading contest will go live on Wednesday, August 19th at noon ET. The prize book will be THE UNSTOPPABLES by David Biro, which is a story about doctors and patients, seduction and violence, fathers and sons. Above all, it explores the joys and complications of renewing childhood bonds.
Bestselling author Adriana Trigiani proclaims, “The magnificent David Biro is back with his most propulsive and imaginative novel yet.” She goes on to say, “Richard, Sal, and Sean grew up together, bound by trouble and fun in close knit Bay Ridge. When Richard, now a doctor, gets himself in dutch in the old neighborhood, he turns to the friends he trusts the most and the ones that know him best --- a glorious read.”
Be sure to submit your entries by Thursday, August 20th at noon ET.
Carol Fitzgerald's latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Chris Bohjalian, whose new novel, THE AMATEUR, will be a Bets On pick.
Chris wrote in an “alchemic frenzy” over 90 days in the summer of 2024 without telling anyone --- not his wife, daughter, editor or agents --- until it was finished. It's his most autobiographical book in nature as he mined the days he spent as a “spectacular golf caddie” when he was in high school. Chris explains that his second summer at this job made him acutely aware of how golf displays the class divide in America as he was caddying for his classmates' parents.
In THE AMATEUR, Mira Winston hits a golf ball at a driving range. It goes through a net and kills 17-year-old caddie Kenny Foster by rupturing an artery. Chris shares that this prologue reads as if it is a third-person omniscient novel discussing the history of golf balls and country clubs, until the final sentences reveal Mira as the narrator.
The book’s title carries multiple meanings, including class elitism in golf culture and broader themes about Mira's identity and choices. The 1978 setting is integral to the novel's exploration of gender inequality, the dismissal of female athletes, and the systemic failure of adults to protect young women.
You have until TOMORROW, Wednesday, August 19th at noon ET to enter our ReadingGroupGuides.com contest for THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING by Lisa Scottoline, which is a Bets On title.
One book group will win up to 10 copies of the book and a book group chat with Lisa. Additionally, we are awarding one copy to 10 readers who will give us their feedback on the book and share it with their book group.
Even if you are not selected to win copies of the book, we are giving four readers and their book groups the chance to chat virtually with Lisa.
Next month's “Bookaccino Live” book preview afternoon event will take place on Wednesday, September 9th at 2pm ET. The focus will be on books releasing between September 8th and October 6th, in addition to some titles releasing in November, that we think will appeal to you.
For those of you who shop online, if you use the store links that appear on our site for shopping, Bookreporter.com gets a small affiliate fee on your purchases from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Bookshop/IndieBound. As you read our reviews and features, we would appreciate your considering this as you buy!

THE RISE AND FALL OF THE ARTIFICIAL STATE by Jill Lepore (Current Affairs)
Inspired by Hannah Arendt’s THE ORIGINS OF TOTALITARIANISM, which argued in 1951 that the machinery of modern life was reshaping the very fundamentals of human existence, Jill Lepore --- profoundly disturbed by the technology revolution and by the soulless inundation of artificial intelligence --- unfurls a new history for our own 21st century. Building on an essay in The New Yorker in 2024, Lepore’s clarion call traces our increasing dependence on and strangulation by data. With Orwellian overtones, THE RISE AND FALL OF THE ARTIFICIAL STATE demonstrates how technology has corroded global democracy, creating a new form of AI government, where AI will recommend the course of action to humans in place of human-run legislatures.

If you've spent your entire life running your family as ruthlessly as you've run the family business, it is perhaps not the best idea to gather them all on a cold and dark remote island to celebrate your 80th birthday. When Margrethe Cullenberg-Franzén falls to her death during her birthday celebration, Ian Ahmed is convinced it's murder. Trapped in a wintry landscape of muted colors and creeping shadows, he and novelist Berit Gardner struggle to unravel the toxic family secrets behind Margrethe's imposing legacy. As winter deepens and the ice seals the islands in silence, the question echoes louder: Who stood to gain the most from the matriarch's fall? And how long before the killer strikes again?

It’s the holidays, and photographer Brooklyn Locke is bound for Italy with her husband, Trey, and their two children. But when Trey vanishes from the airport, missing their connecting flight, their impromptu vacation --- and life as she knows it --- begins to unravel. Desperate to find her husband, Brooklyn accepts help from a stranger on the same flight, Eden Barrow. But Eden soon makes a shocking claim. She is the sister of Trey’s first wife, and 10 years ago he was the main suspect in her murder. Struggling to comprehend these accusations, fate delivers one more blow: a violent accident that leaves Brooklyn fighting for her life. With nowhere else to turn, Brooklyn leans on Eden for support. But each kindness feels too rehearsed, feeding her doubts about Eden’s motives and Trey’s true past.
