Archives - On Sale This Week

In this newsletter, you will find books releasing the weeks of June 28th and July 5th that we think will be of interest to Bookreporter.com readers, along with Bonus News, where we call out a contest, feature or review that we want to let you know about so you have it on your radar.

This week, we are calling attention to our "What's Your Book Group Reading This Month?" contest on ReadingGroupGuides.com, where three book groups will win up to 12 copies of Kate Moore’s THE WOMAN THEY COULD NOT SILENCE: One Woman, Her Incredible Fight for Freedom, and the Men Who Tried to Make Her Disappear. This unputdownable story is about Elizabeth Packard, a housewife and mother of six who courageously fought for her own freedom --- and in so doing freed millions more. The deadline for your entries is Wednesday, July 7th at noon ET.

Last Thursday night, we hosted our fifth "Bookaccino Live" Book Group event. Our guest was Julie Clark, whose most recent novel, THE LAST FLIGHT, is a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick that is now in paperback. It was such fun for Carol to catch up with Julie as THE LAST FLIGHT was a favorite among our readers when it released in hardcover last year. Julie also shared news about her next book, which is coming in June 2022. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast. Note: This video/podcast has spoilers; when we do these book group events, we assume that people have read the book, and this is noted up front. There are many spoilers here, so if you have not read the book, please do that first. And if you want to see an interview with Julie sans spoilers, check out our "Bookreporter Talks To" video and podcast from last year where we spilled no secrets.

With so many people traveling for vacations, we too are going to give our "Bookaccino Live" Book Group event a two-month break and pick up in late September. We have some authors in mind for fall events, but would love to hear who you would like us to have as guests. Send Carol an email with the subject line “Fall Book Group Author Guest,” and we will consider these ideas. Ideally the author will have written a book that is either out in paperback and has been widely read, or was such a massive success in hardcover that a number of people have read it already.

Our 10th Annual Book Group Speed Dating Event --- Individual Publisher Videos Now Available!
As many of you know, we hosted our 10th Annual Book Group Speed Dating event for booksellers, librarians and book club leaders back in May. Representatives from 21 publishers (all of whom were terrific) presented more than 75 titles perfect for book groups that are being published between June and November of this year. You can watch the full event here, but for your convenience, we now have broken out the presentations by publisher and included links to their individual videos on this page. Here you also can access various materials from the event, including a PowerPoint and an Excel spreadsheet with all the featured titles.

In this newsletter, you will find books releasing the weeks of June 21st and June 28th that we think will be of interest to Bookreporter.com readers, along with Bonus News, where we call out a contest, feature or review that we want to let you know about so you have it on your radar.

This week, we are calling attention to our special contest and author chat opportunity for THE HUSBANDS, an upcoming novel (and future Bets On pick) from Chandler Baker, whose adult debut, WHISPER NETWORK, was a New York Times bestseller. The book doesn’t release until August 3rd, but we’re awarding up to 10 advance copies to 15 groups who will share their comments on it --- and five of these 15 groups will win a chat with Chandler via Zoom. The deadline for your entries is Wednesday, July 7th at noon ET.

We have three new “Bookreporter Talks To” interviews to share with you in this newsletter. First up is Joshua Henkin, whose latest novel, MORNINGSIDE HEIGHTS, is this month’s #1 Indie Next pick and will be a Bets On selection. In the book, Pru Steiner falls in love with her Shakespeare professor, Spence Robin. Marrying him means ending her ambition to make a name for herself in New York academia. Decades later, Spence is diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and Pru must come to terms with the impact that will have on her life. Layer in a stepson who walks to his own beat and a daughter who is in medical school, and it’s both the story of a marriage and of a family. In the interview, Joshua gives a great deal of insight into how each of his characters drive the story and reveals the parallels to his own life. Carol also talks to him about what it's like to write as a full-time creative writing professor and the ways in which his career motivates his writing work. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast.

Next up is Zakiya Dalila Harris, whose debut novel, THE OTHER BLACK GIRL, is this month’s Barnes & Noble and “Good Morning America” book club picks. This edge-of-your seat thriller is about the tension that unfurls when two young Black women meet against the starkly white backdrop of New York City book publishing. Zakiya spent a few years working in the editorial department at Knopf Doubleday. She left to write this book when the kernel of a story idea came to her, and it was too good to ignore. In the interview, Zakiya shares how her experiences in the publishing industry inspired everything from the microaggressions present in Nella's story, to the loose basis of certain characters, to the premise itself. She also talks about pop culture references, career transitions (especially for those who are assistants), and some of the challenges involved in getting the book to meet her vision. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast.

Carol's third interview is with Lauren Weisberger, the New York Times bestselling author of THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. Her new novel, WHERE THE GRASS IS GREEN AND THE GIRLS ARE PRETTY, is about sisters, their perfect lives...and their perfect lies. Lauren, who channeled her close relationship with her sister as she wrote the book, talks to Carol about how far she was in her early draft before realizing that she'd have to start over with a different approach, while hoping for the male characters to be nice guys instead of villains. At the same time, she offers fascinating insight into her female characters and how their agency involves them making their own choices. Lauren is excited about the upcoming stage adaptation of THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, which she's been working on with Kevin McCollum and Elton John, the latter of whom is writing all the music. We have two new “Bookreporter Talks To” interviews to share with you in this newsletter. First up is Linwood Barclay, whose latest thriller, FIND YOU FIRST, is a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick. Miles Cookson is a tech millionaire who has been diagnosed with a terminal illness, and he hopes to spend the last bit of his short life finding anyone he might have passed it onto. As a sperm donor, he knows he has multiple unknown kids, and he wants to share the truth with them before time runs out. On his journey, he realizes that his possible descendants are vanishing one by one. Linwood talked about what drew him to write about DNA testing, his writing process and what's next. He and Carol are old friends, so they also discussed what they have binge-watched and loved --- and how he has not been able to get a haircut since November 28th due to COVID-19 restrictions in Toronto where he lives. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast.

Carol's second interview is with Wendy Wax, whose new novel, THE BREAK-UP BOOK CLUB, is a Bets On selection. This briskly paced story is about four very different women who gather at a bookstore to discuss books, bond over their love of reading and support one another. As they say, “What happens at book club stays at book club.” Wendy talked to Carol about her personal journey writing this book and how she struggled during the editing process with one particular character. She also explained what makes a book enjoyable, as well as what it means for people to love different things in fiction and how that can be brought to the conversation in book clubs. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast.

This is your last newsletter reminder to sign up for this month’s “Bookaccino Live” afternoon event, which will take place via Zoom TOMORROW, Wednesday, June 9th at 2pm ET. We have TWO new “Bookreporter Talks To” interviews to share with you in this newsletter. First up is Jean Hanff Korelitz, whose latest psychological thriller, THE PLOT, is a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick. Jean talked about a number of subjects with Carol, including who owns ideas, plagiarism, and how she created her story within the story. They also discussed the various adaptations of her books --- YOU SHOULD HAVE KNOWN, which aired last year on HBO as "The Undoing", a miniseries starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant; and ADMISSION, which was adapted as a 2013 film with Tina Fey, Paul Rudd and Lily Tomlin --- as well as her very successful BOOKTHEWRITER pop-up book group program. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast.

Carol's second interview is with Laura Dave, whose new domestic thriller, THE LAST THING HE TOLD ME, was a Reese’s Book Club pick for May and is a Bets On selection. Carol and Laura rolled from topic to topic. They talked a lot about the writing of this book, which Laura started back in 2012, though she had conceptualized the main theme earlier than that, and how the story changed along the way. She is adapting the book as a limited series for Hello Sunshine (it will run on Apple TV+) with her husband, Josh Singer, who wrote the screenplay for Spotlight --- and Carol loved hearing their plans for that. They then bonded over their mutual love of cooking and how that is a major part of Laura's life. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast.
