In this newsletter, you will find books releasing the weeks of February 2nd and February 9th that we think will be of interest to Bookreporter.com readers, along with Bonus News, where we call out a contest, feature or review that we want to let you know about so you have it on your radar.
This week, we are calling attention to Carol Fitzgerald's Bookreporter.com Bets On commentaries for STRANGERS: A Memoir of Marriage by Belle Burden and ANATOMY OF AN ALIBI by Ashley Elston. STRANGERS is a gorgeous memoir about the sudden end to a seemingly happy marriage, and ANATOMY OF AN ALIBI is a tense, feverish thriller about two women’s lives that are forever intertwined when a murder threatens to expose them both.
Last Tuesday evening, we hosted our 40th “Bookaccino Live” Book Group program --- and it was our most attended event ever! Allen Levi joined us to discuss his New York Times bestselling debut novel, THEO OF GOLDEN. The audience clearly was mesmerized by the insight he gave into the characters and setting.
Allen talked about his inspiration for writing the book and expressed his appreciation for how it has resonated with so many people. He thoughtfully responded to a number of reader questions. Some were asked by attendees who appeared on the virtual stage, while Carol shared questions and comments from those who were camera-shy or weren’t able to attend. Allen also updated us on the project that he is working on now. And yes, it features Ellen!
The program clocks in at just under two hours, but be assured that those who read THEO OF GOLDEN will not want to miss a minute of it. We covered so much ground with Allen and heard from a number of people who were blown away by the book --- including a mother and her 14-year-old son!
We are thrilled to announce that Lily King will be our next “Bookaccino Live” Book Group guest. The event will be held on Thursday, February 26th at 8pm ET.
We will talk about her most recent novel, HEART THE LOVER, an instant New York Times bestseller and a Bets On selection. This deeply moving love story celebrates literature, forgiveness, and the transformative bonds that shape our lives.
Carol will interview Lily and then will turn to readers who would like to share a question for her on screen (we have special sign-in directions for these attendees, and they will get to chat with Lily in our “backstage green room” before the program starts), followed by audience questions.
If you would like to ask a question, please fill out this form by Thursday, February 26th at noon ET. Be sure to include your name, city, state, email address and phone number, as well as your question. And indicate if you would like to be on camera or off.
Carol's latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Paula McLain. Her new novel, SKYLARK, is a “Good Morning America” Book Club pick.
Paula has been enthralled with Paris since her 2011 bestseller, THE PARIS WIFE. Her new book features dual timelines set in Paris --- one in 1664 and the other in the 1940s during the Nazi occupation. The characters face parallel struggles across different time periods. Both storylines address how people find meaning and hope through connections with others.
In SKYLARK, the underground tunnels beneath Paris serve as a space of refuge and resistance throughout history. Paula conducted extensive research, including physically exploring the city’s underground tunnel network. She wanted to create a “drilled-down view” of Paris rather than the glamorous cafés portrayed in her earlier work.
In addition to talking about how she worked with her editor, Peter Borland, to weave the two stories together, Paula discusses the audiobook narration by Alexa Davalos and Michiel Huisman, both of whom captured the emotional essence of the characters.
Our latest Winter Reading prize book is BLADE by Wendy Walker, which is an upcoming Bets On pick. This chilling psychological thriller is set in the cutthroat world of elite figure skating.
New York Times bestselling author Alafair Burke says, “BLADE pairs intricate plotting and a winning protagonist with an insider’s take on the fierce pressures placed on young women in competitive ice skating. Wendy Walker always delivers.”
The contest is now up, so be sure to enter for your chance to win one of five copies of the book. The deadline for your entries is TOMORROW, Wednesday, February 4th at noon ET.
P.S. For those of you who shop online, if you use the store links that appear on our site for shopping, Bookreporter.com gets a small affiliate fee on your purchases from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and IndieBound. As you read our reviews and features, we would appreciate your considering this as you buy!
This Week's Bonus News:
Carol's Bookreporter.com Bets On Commentaries for
STRANGERS by Belle Burden
and ANATOMY OF AN ALIBI by Ashley Elston
STRANGERS: A Memoir of Marriage by Belle Burden (Memoir)
I had the pleasure of meeting Belle Burden at a publisher event in November. After she told us her story, which is detailed in STRANGERS, I immediately requested a prerelease audio download. I love listening to memoirs on audio. After finishing it, I would share the book’s opening with friends, and they all said that it sounded like a really good novel. Then I would tell them that it’s a memoir.
So what did they react to?
In the first week of the pandemic, while Belle and her family were staying at their home on Martha’s Vineyard, life was going as well as it could be during those uncertain times. There were lovely fires in the fireplace, with wood that was carefully selected by Belle’s husband, and cocktails in the afternoon. Yes, there still was fear of COVID, but they felt safe where they were.
The following week, Belle was mopping the floor (I remember thinking that she knew exactly what she was doing when her world turned upside down), and the phone rang.

ANATOMY OF AN ALIBI by Ashley Elston (Psychological Thriller)
I thought it would be tough for Ashley Elston to match her previous thriller, FIRST LIE WINS. But she certainly did that, and more, with ANATOMY OF AN ALIBI.
Small towns often have their own hierarchy with those in power who call the shots. They typically are not elected; rather, they wield power because of money or who they know. Many have secrets that go back decades, all linked to their own nefarious deeds. In ANATOMY OF AN ALIBI, Ashley puts those who have this unelected power on the hot seat, as their deeds from the past come back. And this time judgment is made.
Right from the start, there is a setup where an impersonation can help uncover part of a secret. Camille Bayliss enlists Aubrey Price to pretend to be her at a bar in St. Francisville, Louisiana. Why? Camille needs some time to spy on her husband, Ben, a man who tracks her every move.

THE FINAL PROBLEM written by Arturo Perez-Reverte, translated by Frances Riddle (Historical Mystery)
June 1960. Rough weather at sea leaves a group of strangers stranded on the idyllic Greek island of Utakos, all guests of the only local hotel. Edith Mander, a quiet British tourist, is found dead inside a beach cabana. What appears at first glance to be a clear suicide reveals possible signs of foul play to Ormond Basil, an out-of-work but still well-known actor who in his glory days portrayed the most celebrated detective of all time. Accustomed to seeing him display Sherlock Holmes’ amazing powers of deduction on the big screen, the other guests believe that the actor is the best equipped to uncover the truth. But when a second body is discovered, there is not a doubt in Basil’s mind: a murderer walks among them. What’s more, the killer is staging each crime as a performance, leaving complex clues that bear an eerie resemblance to those found in the pages of Arthur Conan Doyle stories.

HANNIBAL LECTER: A Life by Brian Raftery (Performing Arts/Biography)
This unique biography traces the many lives and crimes of Hannibal Lecter: his disturbing debut in Thomas Harris’ 1981 novel, RED DRAGON; his rise to infamy in beloved films like Michael Mann’s Manhunter and Jonathan Demme’s Academy Award–winning The Silence of the Lambs; and his unexpected comeback in the cult-hit TV series "Hannibal." It also dives into the untold life and career of Harris, the secretive bestselling author whose passion for reporting, eye for grisly detail, and connections to the FBI helped birth not only Lecter, but also the modern true-crime genre. Along the way, the book documents the many ways that Lecter’s rise reflected America’s ever-growing obsession with real-life serial killers.

A true story, THE NAVIGATOR'S LETTER is a tale of uncanny coincidences: two friends from the same small Illinois town; both joined the Air Corps; both became navigators; both were assigned to B-24 Liberators; both flew missions over Europe; both of their planes were forced down over Ploesti; and both went missing in action.

WAITING FOR THE LONG NIGHT MOON: Stories by Amanda Peters (Fiction/Short Stories)
In her debut collection of short fiction, Amanda Peters melds traditional storytelling with beautiful, spare prose to describe the dignity of the traditional way of life, the humiliations of systemic racism, and the resilient power to endure. A young man returns from residential school only to realize he no longer can communicate with his own parents. A grieving mother finds purpose and healing on the front lines as a water protector. And a nervous child dances in her first Mawi’omi. The collection also includes the Indigenous Voices Award-winning and title story “Waiting for the Long Night Moon.” At times sad, sometimes disturbing but always redemptive, these stories will remind you that where there is grief there is also joy, where there is trauma there is resilience, and, most importantly, there is power.

To panic, to plan, to wonder and to pray, to laugh and to grieve.

WORLD'S EDGE: A Mosaic Novel by James Sallis (Dystopian/Science Fiction)
Paperback Original
In a not-so-distant future, the United States has fragmented, balkanizing into unstable provinces often at war with one another. Americans, their great promise not so much lost as forfeited, are encountering the terrors and devastation so much of the world lives with daily. Throughout a land littered with refugees, ruins, orphaned children, soldiers, militia and fugitives, people go on about their daily lives as best they can. The five linked stories of WORLD’S EDGE track the false starts and stall-outs of a nation and civilization trying to rise again, to rebuild, and of individuals caught up in that rebirthing. As ever, the only true history lies in the story of individual lives, in the old rag and bone shop of our hearts.
