Scroll further down the newsletter for more about the book and some of the wonderful praise it has received since its hardcover release last year.
Carol's latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Lisa Scottoline. Her second historical novel, LOYALTY, released last week (following 2021’s ETERNAL) and will be a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick. Lisa has written an emotional, action-packed epic of love and justice set during the rise of the Mafia in Sicily.
Carol and Lisa covered plenty of ground in the interview, including Lisa’s trip to Sicily that inspired the characters and the settings. Before heading there, Lisa had done a lot of research on Italy and the Mafia’s presence in Sicily, but her travels gave her the opportunity to situate her characters and bring them to the page for readers. She also discussed the book’s structure and why it was done that way. Edoardo Ballerini narrates the audiobook, and Lisa explained why she feels he is so right for this book. Plus, she shared what the novel’s original title was and how it changed. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. And don't miss Carol's Bets On commentary in Friday's Bookreporter Weekly Update newsletter.
Last Wednesday night, we hosted our latest “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event. Allison Pataki joined us to discuss her most recent novel, THE MAGNIFICENT LIVES OF MARJORIE POST, a Bets On title that is now available in paperback. Here, she has reimagined the remarkable life of Marjorie Merriweather Post, the American heiress and trailblazing leader of the 20th century.
Allison talked about what drew her to write about Marjorie and how she decided which aspects of Marjorie’s life to share. She also explained how her work as an on-air journalist helped her as she was both researching and discussing the book. The conversation was brisk and fun, and the audience questions were fabulous. Allison also previewed her next novel, AMERICAN MUSE, which centers on the life of Margaret Fuller, whose circle included Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne (who based Hester Prynne on her), Louisa May Alcott and Edgar Allan Poe. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast.
We are thrilled to announce that Kristin Hannah will be our next “Bookaccino Live” Book Group guest. The event will be held on Wednesday, April 26th at 8pm ET, and you can sign up for it here. We will be talking about Kristin’s #1 New York Times bestseller, THE FOUR WINDS, a Bets On selection that is newly released in paperback.
Just as we did last Wednesday night, there will be a two-part Q&A session after Carol talks to Kristin. For the first part, those who are asking a question “on camera” will be featured. This includes spending time with Kristin backstage in our virtual green room before the show starts. If you would like to ask your question "live on screen" this way, please email Carol with the subject line "Kristin" by noon ET on the 26th. Be sure to include your name, city and state, as well as your question. If you do not want to appear on camera but still would like to ask a question, please note that you want to be off camera, and share your question --- adding your name, city and state.

Select Praise for FOUR TREASURES OF THE SKY:
“Jenny Tinghui Zhang uses her considerable talents to illuminate the shocking injustices the Chinese in this country suffered in the 1800s, and in doing so, makes us stop and consider how much of that cruelty and injustice survive to this day. FOUR TREASURES OF THE SKY is an engulfing, bighearted, and heartbreaking novel.”
― Ann Patchett, author of THE DUTCH HOUSE
“An astonishing novel propelled by private and public histories, rich with reflections on self-making, moral calling, great love and profound injustice. Jenny Tinghui Zhang's writing enthralled me --- it is as honed as a needle and as gorgeous as calligraphy.”
― Megha Majumdar, author of A BURNING
“An exhilarating rush of character, history, and storytelling. This novel of the American West illuminates the horrific realities of the Chinese Exclusion act of the 1880s. With unforgettable characters, resiliency, and poetic lyricism, Jenny Tinghui Zhang takes her readers on an unforgettable adventure. This carefully researched novel dazzles.”
— Kali Fajardo-Anstine, author of SABRINA & CORINA
“Brilliant and devastating, FOUR TREASURES OF THE SKY tells the story of Daiyu, who is brought to America against her will and forced to hide who she is even as she grows into her true self. Weaving together myth and history, Zhang’s work is both timeless and utterly necessary right now.”
— Anna North, author of OUTLAWED

FINDING ME: A Memoir by Viola Davis (Memoir)
“In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola, who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me. As I wrote FINDING ME, my eyes were open to the truth of how our stories are often not given close examination. We are forced to reinvent them to fit into a crazy, competitive, judgmental world. So I wrote this for anyone running through life untethered, desperate and clawing their way through murky memories, trying to get to some form of self-love.”

He was also a talented illustrator and graphic artist whose masochistic drawings would catch the eye of a sadistic Nazi officer. Drawing on extensive new reporting and archival research, Benjamin Balint chases the inventive murals Schulz painted on the walls of an SS villa into multiple dimensions of the artist’s life and afterlife.

THIS ISN'T GOING TO END WELL: The True Story of a Man I Thought I Knew by Daniel Wallace (Memoir)
If we’re lucky, we all encounter at least one person whose life elevates and inspires our own. For acclaimed novelist Daniel Wallace, he had one hero and inspiration for so much of what followed: his longtime friend and brother-in-law, William Nealy. William was an acclaimed outdoorsman, a famous cartoonist, an accomplished author, a master of all he undertook --- the ideal that Daniel sought to emulate. But when William took his own life at age 48, Daniel was left first grieving, and then furious with the man who broke his and his sister’s hearts. That anger led him to commit a grievous act of his own, a betrayal that took him down a dark path into the tortured recesses of William’s past. Eventually, a new picture of William emerged, of a man with too many secrets and too much shame to bear.

YOU COULD MAKE THIS PLACE BEAUTIFUL: A Memoir by Maggie Smith (Memoir)
In her memoir YOU COULD MAKE THIS PLACE BEAUTIFUL, poet Maggie Smith explores the disintegration of her marriage and her renewed commitment to herself in lyrical vignettes that shine, hard and clear as jewels. The book begins with one woman’s personal, particular heartbreak, but its circles widen into a reckoning with contemporary womanhood, traditional gender roles, and the power dynamics that persist even in many progressive homes. With the spirit of self-inquiry and empathy she’s known for, Smith interweaves snapshots of a life with meditations on secrets, anger, forgiveness and narrative itself. The power of these pieces is cumulative: page after page, they build into a larger interrogation of family, work and patriarchy.

THE DARK QUEENS: The Bloody Rivalry That Forged the Medieval World by Shelley Puhak (History)
In sixth-century Merovingian France, Brunhild and her sister-in-law, Fredegund, were iron-willed strategists who reigned over vast realms, changing the face of Europe. The two queens commanded armies and negotiated with kings and popes. They formed coalitions and broke them, mothered children and lost them. They fought a decades-long civil war --- against each other. With ingenuity and skill, they battled to stay alive in the game of statecraft, and in the process laid the foundations of what would one day be Charlemagne's empire. Yet after the queens' deaths, their stories were rewritten, their names consigned to slander and legend. In THE DARK QUEENS, Shelley Puhak sets the record straight.

HEALING: When a Nurse Becomes a Patient by Theresa Brown, RN (Memoir)
Despite her training and years of experience as an oncology and hospice nurse, Theresa Brown finds it difficult to navigate the medical maze from the other side of the bed. At times she’s mad at herself for not speaking up and asking for what she needs, but she knows that being a “difficult” patient could mean she gets worse care. Of the almost four million women in this country living with breast cancer, many have had, like Brown, a treatable form of the disease. Both unnerving and extremely relatable, her experience shows us how our for-profit healthcare industry “cures” us but at the same time leaves so many of us feeling alienated and uncared for.

INNOVATION: The History of England Volume VI by Peter Ackroyd (History)
INNOVATION brings Peter Ackroyd's History of England to a triumphant close. Ackroyd takes readers from the end of the Boer War and the accession of Edward VII to the end of the 20th century, when his great-granddaughter Elizabeth II had been on the throne for almost five decades. It was a century of enormous change, encompassing two world wars, four monarchs, the decline of the aristocracy and the rise of the Labour Party, women's suffrage, the birth of the NHS, the march of suburbia, and the clearance of the slums. It was a period that saw the work of the Bloomsbury Group and T.S. Eliot, of Kingsley Amis and Philip Larkin, from the end of the post-war slump to the technicolor explosion of the 1960s, to free love and punk rock, and from Thatcher to Blair.
