In this newsletter, you will find books releasing the weeks of November 22nd and November 29th that we think will be of interest to Bookreporter.com readers, along with Bonus News, where we call out a contest, feature or review that we want to let you know about so you have it on your radar.
This week, we are calling attention to our "What's Your Book Group Reading This Month?" contest on ReadingGroupGuides.com, where three book groups will win up to 12 copies of SUNFLOWER SISTERS. Releasing in paperback on December 28th, it's the final installment in Martha Hall Kelly’s trilogy of novels about Caroline Ferriday’s family, following LILAC GIRLS and LOST ROSES. The deadline for your entries is Wednesday, January 12th at noon ET.
We also are spotlighting Carmen Schober's debut novel, AFTER SHE FALLS, which is now in stores. After an abusive relationship derails her plans, Adri Rivera struggles to regain her independence and achieve her dream of becoming an MMA fighter. She gets a second chance, but the man who offers it to her is Max Lyons, her former training partner, whom she left heartbroken years before. As she fights for her future, will she be able to confront her past?
Carol's latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Karen White, whose new novel, THE ATTIC ON QUEEN STREET, concludes her Tradd Street series. Karen discusses the importance of giving her characters a good wrap-up and how she wove little clues into the book that will tie into her next series, which will be set in New Orleans. The first installment, THE SHOP ON ROYAL STREET, will release on March 29th. She also announces her upcoming collaboration with Beatriz Williams and Lauren Willig, THE LOST SUMMERS OF NEWPORT, and explains how writing during a pandemic impacted their usual writing style. In addition, she talks about her love for Charleston as a setting and what social media means to her --- both as a connection with her readers and as a huge time commitment. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast.
Last Tuesday night, we hosted our sixth "Bookaccino Live" Book Group event. Our guest was Jim DeFede, whose 2002 book, THE DAY THE WORLD CAME TO TOWN: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland, served as the inspiration for the smash hit Broadway musical “Come From Away”. This is one of Carol's favorite books, and the conversation was lively. She loved that Jim shared how he came to write this book and his tales of his time in Gander. She also loves that he still keeps in touch with the people there. The audience was terrific; most had read the book, and others were quick to write that they would be reading and gifting it. With Thanksgiving approaching, it’s a story of giving that really resonates. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast.
On Friday, November 12th, we hosted our 10 ½ Annual Book Group Speed Dating event for booksellers, librarians and book club leaders. Representatives from 17 publishers presented more than 75 titles perfect for book groups that will be published between now and next May. You can watch the event here. Please note that we have timestamped the video, so if you would like to hear from a specific publisher, you easily can do that!

THESE PRECIOUS DAYS: Essays by Ann Patchett (Essays)
“Any story that starts will also end.” As a writer, Ann Patchett knows what the outcome of her fiction will be. Life, however, often takes turns we do not see coming. Patchett ponders this truth in these wise essays that afford a fresh and intimate look into her mind and heart. At the center of THESE PRECIOUS DAYS is the title essay, a surprising and moving meditation on an unexpected friendship. When Patchett chose an early galley of actor and producer Tom Hanks’ short story collection to read one night before bed, she had no idea that this single choice would be life-changing. It would introduce her to a remarkable woman --- Tom’s assistant, Sooki --- with whom she would form a profound bond that held monumental consequences for them both.

THE REVOLUTION ACCORDING TO RAYMUNDO MATA by Gina Apostol (Historical Fiction)
Gina Apostol’s second novel takes the form of a memoir by one Raymundo Mata, a half-blind bookworm and revolutionary, tracing his childhood, his education in Manila, his love affairs, and his discovery of writer and fellow revolutionary Jose Rizal. Mata’s 19th-century story is complicated by present-day foreword(s), afterword(s) and footnotes from three fiercely quarrelsome and comic voices: a nationalist editor, a neo-Freudian psychoanalyst critic, and a translator, Mimi C. Magsalin. In telling the contested and fragmentary story of Mata, Apostol finds new ways to depict the violence of the Spanish colonial era, and to reimagine the nation’s great writer, Jose Rizal, who was executed by the Spanish for his revolutionary activities and is considered by many to be the father of Philippine independence.
