A Real-Life Role Model: What Would Katniss Do?

Okay, okay, so your average teenage girl isn't going to be asked to compete in a fight to the death, broadcast on national television. But given that high school life is full of constant challenges and competitions, perhaps Katniss can teach us all a little something about what it means to be a real-life heroine.

1. Femininity comes in all different flavors
Katniss might not look like a pretty princess. She might even despise the Capitol's attempts to dress her up in elaborate costumes before battle. But Katniss consistently proves that all kinds of skills --- from climbing trees to excelling at archery --- can be feminine, attractive, and even sexy.  Teenage girls with unconventional talents and skills should feel confident showing them off, thanks to Katniss's example.

2. Love and loyalty are worth risking everything
Katniss would never be one to hide her own capabilities under a bushel, but her actions are never prompted by arrogance, pride, or false confidence. Instead, Katniss is motivated --- in nearly everything she does --- by love and loyalty to her family and friends. Katniss's loyalties are constantly being questioned and tested, but she never doubts the things that are most important to her: her love for her family, her friends, and her home. At a time when relationships are constantly in flux and alliances are as volatile as in any Hunger Games arena, teens will be comforted by Katniss's reminder of what's really important.

3. Creativity can save your life
When you're a teenager, it can be tempting to run with the herd, to crowd-source your decisions on everything from which bands to follow to which college to attend. But if Katniss teaches girls anything, it's that creative thinking and surprising choices aren't just quirky --- they can win battles, define character, and maybe even save the world.  Wearing the "wrong" shoes or taking a "weird" class might not seem like life-or-death decisions, but in high school they can feel that way. Girls who want strong role models for creativity, originality, and individuality, however, need only to ask themselves, "What would Katniss do?"
