THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING by Lisa Scottoline brings Julia Pritzker back in touch with her old friend, Courtney Horan. As the book opens, Julia is living in Tuscany with her husband, Gianluca Moretti, and her young daughter, Leni. She has reached out to Courtney via FaceTime, anticipating one of their usual catchup conversations as Courtney is driving. Julia asks where she is headed, and Courtney mentions that she is visiting her grandmother, Kay Patterson, who Julia also knows. So she stays on the line to chat.

Julia suddenly gets a feeling, something that she has not experienced in a long time, a sense of foreboding about the scene that Courtney is walking into at the house. Sadly, her inclination is spot-on as Kay has been shot dead. Courtney realizes that she has arrived on the heels of the killer. She runs in the direction where she heard a door slam, but she cannot get to the perpetrator. Julia, who has had a very clairvoyant premonition of something terrible happening in the past --- the death of her first husband --- is distraught thinking about what Courtney is going through and the feeling that came over her right before the attack. 

Knowing that she has to be there for her friend, Julia flies to Pennsylvania, leaving Gianluca and Leni behind in Italy. Courtney has supportd her at many points in her life, so she wants to return the favor. The police are less than helpful on any details about what has occurred. They imply that it could have been a robbery, but that does not track with the valuables left behind. Courtney shockingly is charged with the murder, which clearly is not corroborated with any evidence. Julia realizes that she is going to have to work every angle of her skills with her premonitions in order to save her friend, because nothing or no one else is going to save her.

What really made me smile was when Lisa brought in Bennie Rosato, a character who her fans know and love, as Courtney’s defense attorney. Though I confess that I did not read the earlier Rosato & Associates books, I quickly saw that a decisive and sharp lawyer like Bennie was just what was needed. Julia had her debut in THE UNRAVELING OF JULIA, but Lisa is such a solid writer that you can read THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING with no worry about missing something.
