Hollywood, Ending

October 2026

Ah, Hollywood. It's all glimmer and glamour on the outside. But what is it really like behind the scenes? John Green takes readers there in his latest book, HOLLYWOOD, ENDING, his first novel for adults.

Over the past decade, Green has seen cinematic adaptations of his novels that have given him insight into that world --- and he brings that knowledge to this book.

Here we are brought onto the set of an indie film being made about Andy Warhol, which is set in the days before his death. Andy Warhol Never Gets Old co-stars Juniper Castillo, who was a child actor, and Kai Laramie, who is appearing in his first movie. The title role is being played by someone whom theatergoers might not expect to see in a film like this: Marvel action hero Matthew Malone. He's “the face” of the movie, with Hollywood clout behind his name. Whether a big motion picture or a small one, he wants a hit.

Juniper and Kai carry lots of emotional trauma in their lives, which is parsed out to readers. Everyone has a back story, but Hollywood has the proclivity to blow that up, and not always in ways that are emotionally healthy. Egos can tell tales out of school to keep the buzz behind the scenes going, often with no positive effects. Readers quickly see that buzz will be driven any way it can.

When the cameras are not rolling, there is “positioning the film” as publicists give talking points and line up wardrobes to be worn for press meetings. Readers head into “awards season,” where studios spend their time positioning actors for recognition and getting the optics right. Be here now. Say this now. Be here later. Wear this, then that. Life outside becomes as scripted as it is on screen. Green is a master of capturing the gray lines that are part of life instead of the ones that end up on screen.

And then there is what one might call a cinematic break, which brings real humanity to the story in a way that Green has done again and again.

One last note: There are some who say that the book “reads young” when the characters are talking to each other. I think that is because Green knows how to nail the voice and tone of younger characters so well. I already am looking forward to his next “adult” novel.
