Binge Reading Suggestions for Cathy

In the August 5th Bookreporter newsletter, I asked for suggestions of authors for my friend Cathy to binge. She had previously read all of Lee Child, Harlan Coben and Greg Iles. Here are suggestions that I got for her from our readers. May you also find some suggestions here.

Might I suggest Linwood Barclay and Stephen Hunter's books? They are a couple of my favorites in the same vein as Lee Child and Harlan Coben. ---Shannon from Evansdale, IA

Brad Thor ---Pat

I order the adult fiction and nonfiction for our library and one of the authors I recently found and have been bingeing on myself is A.D. Scott., a Scottish author who has written The Highland Gazette Mystery series. There are six books in the series and I have gotten through the first three. I have enjoyed each one and look forward to reading the third, which just came in for me, in the coming week. Every patron I recommend them to gives me very positive feedback on them. ----Lucia from Belvidere, NJ

Scott Pratt!!!!!!! Start with book one. ---Kathy

I think she would love John Hart!!! Happy Reading. ---Michelle

I suggest Cathy read in this order --- PROMISE FALLS and FAR FROM TRUE --- by Linwood Barclay.  Third of trilogy soon.to be released. Not as mind-stretching as her faves, but good mysteries nonetheless. ---Deb

Daniel Silva is a good one to binge read.... I have read every one of his books and look forward to future releases. ---Judy

She would love Michael Connelly, J A Jance, David Baldacci, Iris Johansen and John Sandford. ---Karen

Daniel Silva’s “Gabriel Allon” series (political intrigue).---Joanne

I recommend Jeffrey Deaver, a personal favorite for his unusual characters and astounding plots. On my first read, the murderer had been apprehended and then I realized there were still 200 pages to go! I love his Lincoln Rhyme mysteries, although I would go for the earlier ones. ---Elaine

Regarding authors that your friend may like based on the three authors you noted (two of which are among my faves) maybe she can try: Linwood Barclay, Karin Slaughter, Lisa Gardner or Laura Lippman. ---Shannon

Jeff Abbott or David Baldacci, especially the John Puller series. ---Susan

James Lee Burke ---Linda

T Jefferson Parker, a long time favorite and Linwood Barkley, who I recently discovered. ---Carol from San Clemente, CA

Although I'm familiar with the names of the authors Cathy likes, I'm not familiar with their books. My favorites to binge on are 1) Daniel Silva's Gabriel Allon series, 2) Jonathan Kellerman and 3) Faye Kellerman. ---Karen

My first recommendation would be the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. These are laugh out loud fun. I would not recommend her other series though. She’s trying too hard to replicate her success with Plum. The other author I would recommend is Lianne Moriarty.  I have read three of her books THE HUSBAND’S SECRET; BIG, LITTLE LIES and WHAT ALICE FORGOT, which is my favorite of the three. Her latest TRULY MADLY GUILTY is high on my to-read list.  ---Karen

Based on the authors Cathy currently reads I would recommend C.J. Box, William Kent Krueger and Nevada Barr. I'm sure you thought of them already. The only decision is whether to read their books in some kind of order or not! My husband insists on chronological order to Lee Childs' books which then makes him crazy when Lee throws in a prequel. ---Fran

I would suggest Robert Dugoni!  I read one of his books last year and enjoyed it so much I went on line with my local library and found all his earlier books. Even the first, a nonfiction was great. It's interesting to see his technics and storytelling improve over the years......and he writes one heck of a mystery. ---Rosemary from Virginia Beach, Virginia

There's nothing I like better than giving recommendations, so here goes. I like all the authors you mentioned so hopefully Cathy will enjoy some of these:
Mark Pryor's Hugo Marston series starting with THE BOOKSELLER
C J Sansom's Shardlake series starting with DISSOLUTION (historical)
Michael Koryta
Joe Hill's NOS4A2 for a little horror. I hear THE FIREMAN is good too but I haven't read it yet.
Anything and everything by RJ Ellory. ---Anne in Austin

I'm doing the same this summer. Right now I'm reading Steve Berry's Cotton Malone series and Iris Johansen's Eve books. ---Stephanie

Has she tried Paul Doiron? He was recommended by a fellow reader who also likes Lee Child and Harlan Coben. ---Alice

Perhaps Cathy would like C.J. Box or Steve Hamilton. We think they are great and since we like her other authors perhaps she would like these. ---Janice

I have loved J. A. Jance's books this summer. I do not understand how I have missed her. Maybe your friend would like to read the Jance books. --- Margaret

Daniel Silva ---Laura

Based on the authors you mentioned that your friend likes, I would suggest Michael Connelly, Andrew Gross (new book just coming out), David Baldacci (some of his books), and Steve Martini (his new one is great!!!). Wish her happy binge-ing! ---Marcia

My favorite thriller (like Lee Child) authors are Daniel Silva, Brad Taylor, David Baldacci and John Hart.  If she hasn't read any of these, I think she will like them. --Bobbie

I also read those authors that Cathy does. She may also like Jonathan Kellerman, Faye Kellerman, Linwood Barclay, James Patterson, Dennis Lehane, and there are several more that just don’t come to mind right now but I think that this is a start for her. ---Eleanor

Stuart Woods ---Roe

I am now 100% audiobook, and have binged several series. With her "likes" she may have already read these, but just in case:
Robert Dugoni - Tracey Crosswhite series; IN THE CLEARING just released is 3rd in series.
Andrea Kane - Forensic Instincts seriesI had a good time with JD Robbs’ “In Death” series. 42 books so far and a new one due in September.
David Baldacci; Will Robie Books
Michael Connelly; Harry Bosch Series ---Susie

John Hart. He is amazing. Start with THE LAST CHILD ---Celeste

What about William Kent Krueger….my husband & I enjoy his series.  Also Peter James & Robert Dugoni….so many authors….so little time!  ---Carol

How about C.J.Box or Thomas Perry? Both are great and have a multitude of books. I just finished THE ADVOCATES DAUGHTER by Anthony Frazer and it was a wonderful thriller. --Hedy

She should read all of the C. J. Box books --- his stand-alone novels and his wonderful series about Joe Pickett. Be sure to start the series at the first book so you can watch Joe, his family and friends grow. The descriptions of Wyoming are so wonderful that I actually planned a trip and went to Wyoming for 10 days. Love these books. --Betsy

Two very different authors I enjoy are Alex Kava (the Creed series) and all of John Hart's novels (not a series, but excellent books). ---Cheryl

How about some Douglas Preston/ Lincoln Child?  Or John Lescroart? Also F. Paul Wilson's Repairman Jack series. Or John Connolly' s Charlie Parker books. --- Pat Askins

How about Karin Slaughter, Lisa Gardner, Michael Connelly, or John Grisham? Hope she finds an author or two! ---Susan

She might like Kate Flora, particularly her Joe Burgess series. She also has three nonfiction titles dealing with crime --- FINDING AMY, DEATH DEALERS and A GOOD MAN WITH A DOG. The titles in the Burgess series (police procedurals set in Portland Maine) are PLAYING GOD, THE ANGEL OF KNOWLTON PARK, REDEMPTION and GRANT YOU PEACE. ---John

Daniel Silva’s “Gabriel Allon” series (political intrigue).---Joanne
