THERE IS A BIRD ON YOUR HEAD by Mo Willems

By and Rachel D.

We love it when we hear different perspectives on why people love the same book, and below is a perfect example! Two of our Teen Board members, Maggie L. and Rachel D., wrote about THERE IS A BIRD ON YOUR HEAD by Mo Willems, part of the Elephant & Piggie series. Maggie loves the humor, and Rachel remembers how the book helped her escape from a world she didn't yet comprehend when she first moved to the United States. Read their two posts, below!

I'm going to tell you about my favorite picture book THERE IS A BIRD ON YOUR HEAD! By Mo Willems, an Elephant & Piggie book.

As a child, I looked for books with humor, as many did. If it could make me laugh, it was definitely a keeper. I also liked books with cute pictures or silly animal characters. When I came across this book, I fell in love. First of all, Mo Willems is an amazing author. I'm sure many of you have heard of his pigeon books, such as DON’T LET THE PIGEON DRIVE THE BUS. Elephant & Piggieis its own silly little series about an elephant and a pig who encounter silly situations together. The illustrations are very simple and cute, and the characters are funny and likable.

Here is a cute scene where you can see their contrasting personalities, which makes for a silly story. Piggie was my favorite, being a bit ignorant in a cute and silly way.

This book is good for a short read that will make you smile at the cute characters and silly story.

One of my favorite picture books to this day is THERE IS A BIRD ON YOUR HEAD! by Mo Willems. The story follows an elephant who has a bird on his head. Throughout the story, that same bird falls in love and builds a nest, and even hatches three eggs! The ending of this book has such an adorable twist to it, and still warms my heart to this very day. I really enjoyed seeing the bird mature and grow and how the elephant comically responds to it.

I remember reading this story when I first moved to the United States at the age of eight. Coming from France and not knowing a word of English, reading a picture book was like an escape from a world which I didn't fully comprehend yet. The pictures in this book are adorable and the characters entice you to their silly story. Each page made me smile a little wider until I would burst into laughter at the last page, when the birds settled their nest on the pig's head!

Whenever I want to reminisce about my childhood, this book is the first one I pick up. The simply drawn illustrations and small lines somehow managed to gain my love and respect for this book. It will always have my respect and remain a dear memory of my childhood.

Whether it be for a young sibling, a parent, grandparent, teacher or friend, this book is a must-have! I truly believe everyone should have this book, because in my opinion, it truly is a classic.
